Title: City on the Head of a Pin art on DeviantArt (large version), or on tumblr (can click to enlarge)
Artist: alicexz
Pairing: Gen portrait, Sherlock Holmes
Rating: not rated, I would say G
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Reccer's comments: I'd like to end with this gorgeous portrait of Sherlock raising raven wings through the shadows. Inspired by a long-time favorite fic, Mad_Maudlin's A City on the Head of a Pin (previously recc'd on this comm back in 2011 here), this painting plays beautifully with light and a dramatic palette of blues and blacks. It's a striking image.

Title: Fanart for Mamishka's Fallen
Artist: amaintae aka Tryn
Pairing: Gen
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Fan art for Mamishka’s Fallen fic, go read it <333

Reccer's comments: This is a riveting portrait of Guardian Angel!John from Mamishka's excellent fic series Fallen, which I recommend (the third fic has not yet been posted, but as of this summer it sounds like Mamishka is planning to continue). You can see the fic rec for Fallen here.

If you haven't read the fic, the image itself won't tell you much, but an analysis might give too much away. So, I'm putting my brief comments behind the cut. I like the intensity in GA!John's expression and his lined face. Although GA!John's appearance changes after he loses his wings and John Watson dies, I like the artist's decision to show us the moment in Fallenwhen GA!John's wings and JHW's clothing are both present. This moment makes visible one certainty: John the Guardian Angel and John the Wingless Mortal inhabiting the body and borrowing the memories of an ex-RAMC officer are the same in at least one sense. They are fiercely protective of one Consulting Detective. Endanger him at your peril.

Title: The Flight of John Watson
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] JessamyGriffith
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 26646 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: none (see tags)
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: When Sherlock is forced to share his eyrie, he is determined to make the best of it. However, he has no intention of ever pair-mating. It's a pity his body has other ideas.
John Watson can't believe his luck when he meets Sherlock Holmes. But who would ever want a flightless Tiercel with PTSD who can't even manage a courtship flight?

Reccer's comments: Beautifully done piece of imaginative worldbuilding, this is about as au as a story can get and still be in character. I truly loved the descriptions of both avian behaviour and of flight, so very well realised here.

There is also a sequel, Fledgling.

Title: Murderous Imprint
Author: MojoFlower
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 52,632 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock (BBC)
Author's summary: Sherlock should be focusing on the series of brutal vivisections Lestrade has brought to him. Instead he's distracted by a most amazing and unexpected experimental opportunity from the basement apartment of 221C. Will he figure out the one in time to stop the other? And does he need help in order to do it? An AU. Eventual Johnlock.

Reccer's comments: Honestly, wing!fic doesn't generally do it for me. Something about over-romantization and the Mary Sue - or in this fandom, Gary Stu - factor. But this one actually has a motivation for it which, while not entirely explaining things in a scientific manner (you'll want to check your real-world sensibilities at the door anyway), did provide enough character-based justification that it worked for me.

Also, there's absolutely splendid, anatomically correct wing!porn.

Title: I Used to Live Alone Before I Knew You
Author: [livejournal.com profile] etothepii
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 11,000
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Where Mycroft is an angel, Sherlock is a demon, and John is still John.
Reccer's comments: Sherlock is dark here in a very different way, because although he is, yes, technically evil, he’s also a fallen angel, and remembers what love feels like. Sherlock’s slow re-assessment of his worldview as a result of John’s presence in his life is glorious to watch, and you’ll be cheering for them both. Although this is technically a Good Omens fusion, I didn’t know that until after reading, and it hindered my enjoyment of the story not a jot. There’s also related fanart.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
