Title: Spectacularly Ignorant in a Nice Way
Author: fleetwood_mouse
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 5754 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Drug Use
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: In which Sherlock Holmes soils expensive shoes, smokes 243 brands of cigarettes, cooks for a former drug runner, experiments with cosmetics, plans a wedding, and earns himself a very happy retirement.

Reccer's comments: 5+1 ficcery at its finest. This little gem is sweet and funny, with just the teeniest bit of angst - but just a tiny bit. It follows Sherlock through five phases of scientific experimentation during five different phases of his life, and concludes with Sherlock and John being happily retired in Sussex where they continue to experiment together. My favourite part was the first section, in which Mycroft's reaction to Sherlock's antics is priceless and will resonate with older siblings everywhere. Enjoy!

Title: The Fundamental Things Apply
Author: [livejournal.com profile] raina_at
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 6,500 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: "Kisses that are easily obtained are easily forgotten." - Proverb

Reccer's comments: Happy April, everyone! This fic is one of my favorite uses of the 5+1 format, in this case "five times Sherlock kissed John and one time John kissed him back." The heart of the story is really a gentle examination of the idea of addictions -- to drugs, to danger, to losing control -- and it becomes a lovely portrayal of a romance that refuses to be defined by those addictions. I adore the ending, especially.

(Note: It was written in the hiatus between S1 and S2, so the imagined resolution to the pool stand-off in "The Great Game" is different than canon).

*Mods, for some reason the comm's tag list is not appearing for me, so I can't add the appropriate tags right now. It's probably a temporary glitch -- I'll come back and try to add them later.

Title: The Case of the Vanishing Pants
Author: SwissMiss
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 44,024
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Five times John and Sherlock lost their pants in the course of a case.

Reccer's comments: One of my absolute favorite things is when an author takes a prompt or concept that is inherently ridiculous or cracky and makes it work in a way that is neither, and this fic is an absolute brilliant example of this. Each case is compelling, well-plotted and unique, and leaves absolutely no doubt that the boys simply must lose their pants for the greater good. The characterizations are lovely; Sherlock's blunt offers for John to look at his penis had me face-palming right alongside John, and the UST is just delicious. Stir in Reichenbach feels and an absolutely beautiful, gut-wrenching look at John's PTSD and you have everything you could want. I'm so happy I stumbled across this gem of a fic.

Title: I Do Believe
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kcscribbler
Pairing: Gen
Length: 11,000 ish
Rating: K+... Teen?
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Written for this sherlockbbc_fic meme prompt: Sherlock is a master of disguise (just like every version of him ever) and he's not just going to spend his 'death' ignoring the people he cares about. So - 5 times Sherlock used a disguise to watch over the people he left behind and one time he revealed himself.

Reccer's comments: KC is one of the more well-known authors in this fandom, and yet none of her fics have been recced yet here, as far as I can tell. So I thought it was time to remedy that.

I had a bit of a hard time deciding which fic of hers to rec, since I love them all, so I did the logical thing and chose my favourite. Obvious.

This fic actually doesn't focus as much on Sherlock himself as it does on the people in his life.  Sherlock is more of a periphery figure.  Taking place during the Hiatus, this is the story of six people who, at some point, did a favour for Sherlock, or supported him in some way. Some of the identities of these people will surprise you.  In return, Sherlock pays them back in his own unique way. For five of those people, he retains his disguise.  For one person, he chooses to reveal himself, albeit in a very Sherlockian way.  One guess as to who that one person is.

Title: Five Times Sherlock Hated Gladstone (and One Time Sherlock Thought Gladstone was a BAMF)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] katie821
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ~2500 words
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock hates Gladstone.

Reccer's comments: For my last rec of the month, I present an adorable, fluffy, first-time fic featuring Gladstone. There is nothing more delightful than Sherlock being forced to interact with a puppy. He forbids John from bringing the pup home, then spends the rest of the fic glaring at and resenting the little dog in his childish, self-centered way. But hilariously! What I especially like about this fic is how John, while more patient & accomodating and plain old nicer than Sherlock, is not a pushover. Sherlock's loud and obnoxious, whereas John just quietly goes about being the boss of him. Hence, we get Sherlock walking a happy little bulldog while resenting it for making him appear normal. Hee!

Title: Staircase Wit
Author: [livejournal.com profile] splix
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 42,033 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: L'esprit de l'escalier - Sherlock never suffers from it, which isn't to say he doesn't suffer for it. Five times he took a beating, and one time he got away.

Reccer's comments: This set of six vignettes follows the development of Sherlock's character and skill set from the age of thirteen to thirty-four. There are also a handful of cases, including the seminal ones where Sherlock meets Lestrade, the Hudsons, and Moriarty (although he doesn't realise the last one). I particularly liked seeing Sherlock and Sebastian at university, where Sebastian was really almost likable. The author also has a wonderful eye for detail, setting scenes from Sherlock's dorm to Miami to the National Gallery, and a sharp ear for dialogue, making the exchanges biting, quick, insightful, and honest.

There are a few humorous moments (Sherlock disguised as a dancer is a scream), but mostly this is a story of a man fighting hard to keep himself intact by building walls and following only his own dictates, no matter the cost to himself or others. There is quite a bit of graphic violence, including torture, that may not be easy to read. The ending is sweet and healing, though, without degenerating into fluff.

Title: A Slowly Dawning Attraction
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mitsuruaki
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 12,143
Rating: PG-13/R
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 5 times Sherlock and John nearly kissed at work, and 1 time they did.
Reccer's comments: This is a 5 + 1 fanfic, but it doesn't feel disjointed like those fics can often feel; every part flows smoothly from the previous one. Lots of UST, but it's worth it to see all the lovely close calls they have before they finally get on the same page.

Title: Five Times Sherlock Listened to John’s Heartbeat and One Time John Listened to Sherlock’s

Author: [livejournal.com profile] thirdbird

Pairing: John/Sherlock

Length: 2500

Rating: T

Warnings: none

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock is obsessed with John's heartbeat.

Reccer's comments: This was one of the first stories I ever read in fandom and it was a wonderful one to come across as a newbie to fandom. I adore stories from Sherlock's POV (though I'm finding that there are fewer than I realized). His quirky way of seeing the world along with his intensity (and intense focus) on what matters to him are illustrated powerfully in this 5 +1 style story. In a relatively short space, the author shows us John and Sherlock's relationship on so many levels. And, of course, the central conceit, that Sherlock does (of course) have a heart (same as John) is both poignantly felt and gorgeously shown. Beautifully written, too.

Title: Obvious
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eviltwin
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ~3100
Rating: PG13
Warnings: -
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Prompt: Five times Sherlock didn't realise he was being hit on, and the one time he did and liked it.
Reccer's comments:
There is something incredibly funny and cute about the all knowing Sherlock Holmes being hit on and (ostensibly) not realizing it. Almost makes me feel bad for the people who try... Almost.
I love this fic because it makes me giggle smile but still conveys a depth of feeling and insight into the characters. Light hearted and sweet but not shallow, with perfect character voices. It's still one of my favourite "get together" scenarios; maybe because it's all so simple in the end and there's no drama involved. (Just John being a little slow. But compared to Sherlock, who isn't?)

Title:Five Times Mrs Holmes’ Heart Broke Over Her Younger Son (and the One Time He Tried To Make It Up To Her In His Own Unique Way)
Author: by [livejournal.com profile] jupiter_ash
Pairing: Gen
Length: 5,058 words
Rating:PG
Warnings:Mentions of domestic abuse.
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:Ever wondered about Mrs Holmes and what sort of a woman it would take to raise someone like Sherlock? Well, here’s one version.

Reccer's comments: In honor of Mother's Day I'm going to rec my favorite story about Sherlock's "mummy". [livejournal.com profile] jupiter_ash does a wonderful job in showing us a woman raising a child that the rest of the world doesn't understand. Your heart will break along with hers but in the end you can see how much influence a loving mother can have. This is a gen story with hints of m/m. Really the focus is on the relationship between mother and son which is perfect for today.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
