Title: The Men Who Talked Between the Words
Author: Odamaki
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade, brief John Watson/Mary Morstan, Harry Watson/OFC, James Sholto/OMC, Billy Wiggins/OFC
Length: @460,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: past abuse (including implied/referenced child abuse), implied/referenced suicide (not of any character from the TV show), implied/referenced drug use
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John expected to be a father some day; he expected to have the house, and the wife and the nice suburban job. Sherlock never expected to have children, in part because he never expected to make it past 30. As it turns out, you don't get a choice. Crammed into Baker Street with a baby, John struggles with single-parenthood and his own fears, while Sherlock treads the fine line between doing too little and saying too much.

Reccer's comments: It's hard to think of what I can say about this fic that hasn't already been said. Four years in the making, of a length comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this story took extraordinary commitment to create and the end result is simply astonishing. I've been reading Holmesian fiction for quite a long time, and I've never run across another story that felt quite like this one. There's something so authentic and keenly observed about the details. There's a realism here that reaches out and never lets me go. The characters - both the main and the secondary ones - have such distinct voices, and their lives and relationships are deeply grounded and believable.

This is a realistic parentlock fic, and it's the deliciously slowest of slow-burn romances, and that heart of the story is beautiful. But that's really not all there is to it. Odamaki doesn't allow Sherlock, John, and the baby to live in a bubble. The story is full to bursting with the many other people who know them, who affect and are affected by them. Both Sherlock and John have important inward work to do before either is ready to think about romance. It's a story about growth, about healing, about hard-fought and hard-won maturity. About friendships and familiar places that won't stay neatly unchanged, and about painful habits and histories that won't fade away without long and deliberate effort.

When I think of this fic, the love story and the family Sherlock and John make together stands at the center. But I also think of Sherlock and Molly's quiet happiness working on her research together at Barts; James Sholto walking John through his fledgling orchard; Billy playing chess in hospital; Harry lounging with her girlfriend on the couch; Greg's tiepin; the moms in John's playgroup; the voice at the other end of a helpline.

This is a compelling fic about love and family, but it's also about all those other nooks and crannies of life that too often get left out of love stories. There's a village of vivid people wrapped up in this story, and I love them all.

(Also, I should add: 1) the story is complete. It ends at chapter 27. There are still new chapters going up, but they are 'bonus material' like deleted scenes and FAQ responses from the author. 2) The story goes AU after series 3, and incorporates no elements of series 4. The baby is a girl, but she is not the canonical 'Rosie' of the TV show).

Author's summary: My dear Mr. Smith,

Per our conversation of the 10th regarding the ms's unusual length, I am writing to propose that you delete the following text from Part One of "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" before printing. I am sure that whatever expense you are put to for the new typesetting will ultimately be made up by a savings in the cost of printing. It has no bearing on the story, and was included purely because my readers seem to take an interest in these mundane sitting-room conversations between us. I intend to make similar cuts to Part Two before delivering on the deadline as we agreed. I believe no actual editing will be required. You can merely delete everything between ' "It does not tell us very much does it?" he remarked, as he handed it back to me' and ' "Hardly anything." ' However, that there may be no confusion, I replicate in the enclosure the exact portion of the text that I wish to suppress.

Thank you for your patience. I may say that apart from the length, there are many considerations which have induced me to make this change, and I very much appreciate your accommodating my wishes.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. John Watson.

Reccer's comments: This is part of an ongoing (and rather wonderful) series, but stands as a self-contained work. NAVA has always been one of my favorite canon stories, and I have been delighted to find great fic written about and around it. This fic elaborates on the relationship between Watson and "Tadpole" Phelps, through a conversation in the sitting room at 221b.

Author's summary:

Baker Street is very much the same. Only different.

And Sherlock is just trying not to drown.

Reccer's comments:

The smiley face was wrong.

No, not wrong exactly, it was impossible for such a thing to be wrong but—

Perhaps different was the better word.

The smiley face was different.

It had been a good effort. An excellent effort. He'd found replacement wallpaper in the same design as the original. John had even gone out and purchased a can of Michigan hardcore propellant in the proper shade. He'd gotten the placement mostly right. Sherlock had provided the bullet holes himself.

And yet it wasn't quite the same.

The differences were subtle. The yellow paint intersected with the wallpaper pattern slightly lower than it had before (likely due to John's shorter stature.) The paint had been applied with a heavier hand, a more measured, controlled spray compared to his own broad bored sweep all those years ago.

The effect was—unsettling.

Full disclosure: I bid on this author for the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction on on Tumblr and this is the story that came out of it, so I have a very personal connection.

This amazing post-S4 story deals with the aftermath of all that has happened, particularly the events in The Final Problem, from Sherlock's perspective. To crib some of what I've said about this fic elsewhere, I love how this story ties together so many of the loose ends we were left with once the series ended. This story approaches TFP from a canon viewpoint: TFP is real and this is what happened during and after. It has some of the most chilling scenes (featuring Eurus Holmes), some of the most heartbreaking (featuring Gloria Trevor), and some of the most uplifting (featuring Sherlock and little Rosie Watson).

This is a beautifully written story that runs an emotional gamut from anxiety and unease and fear, to healing and warmth and brotherhood and so much love. We come full circle with Sherlock as he works to heal himself and to make Baker Street truly home. Yes, it's Sherlock/John endgame, but the focus is more on Sherlock and how he deals with all that has happened. I don't hate TFP as much as some- in fact, I found much to love- but this story has given me answers I needed, the emotional closure I craved, and it has made rewatches that much more enjoyable.

Author's summary: It is quite a three pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for fifty minutes.

Reccer's comments: Oh, this is such a cosy, delightful image of Holmes in his dressing gown, cross-legged on the rug before his fireplace, facing away from us and reading through his beloved agony columns. I adore the little details -- the persian slipper next to him on the floor; the crazy-quilt remnants of red thread on the corkboard above the fireplace, probably left over from his last impromptu mural of evidence; the wreaths of smoke curling around his head; the scribbled notes on bits of paper; the empty teacups. There is something so charming about the rich color and sort of crooked cartoon style that sheeplocked specializes in, it's just perfect for something as ridiculous, beautiful, and domestic as Holmes.

If you enjoy this, I recommend exploring sheeplocked's fanart tag, she's got lots of great stuff, including quite a bit of BBC Sherlock art covering both the major and secondary cast.

Reccer's comments: Holmes and Watson, aristocratically beautiful, share a handsome loveseat in 221B. Holmes smokes while Watson reads, cozy on a long night, the bare trees contrasting with the warmth and affection inside the flat. Holmes's carmine dressing gown and cravat are a striking contrast to his Beloved's gown and honey-blonde hair. In fact, the dominant colors associated with Watson harmonize with the background (apart from the window), suggesting that he is home and hearth for Sherlock Holmes.

Reccer's comments: Alas, this fragment of what would have almost certainly been a spectacular h/c fancomic is long abandoned. The artist has been deleting their fannish material in some locations, so I'd suggest downloading* this unfinished gem for your own private enjoyment.

Not only do I love the composition of the panels (note the wonderful rhythm of the panels on p. 6-7) and the richly-colored character designs (based on S1), I positively adore the IC dialogue. I suspect pennies-4-eyes aka Elfkin either lives/has lived in the UK, for they seem quite familiar with speech patterns and local slang. See especially the conversation between John and Greg over the phone on page six. Dialog-wise I've not seen a better Sherlock fancomic; as for the art, it is also among the very best fancomics created for this fandom.

Reccer's comments: I have so much art to rec this month! I'd like to start with this beautiful piece. It's a sketch of BBC Sherlock's shooting-the-wall moment from "The Great Game," done in a style that is so reminiscent of Sidney Paget that it takes my breath away. I don't even know if that stylistic homage was intentional -- the artist doesn't mention it -- but the shading, the shadows, the sketchwork and color all combine to make this seem like it would be perfectly at home in the pages of The Strand.

The detail work is simply fantastic -- the collection of creases on Sherlock's pajamas and the marvelous contours of his leather chair are just delightful. The elegant, indolent drape of his hand...the sharply defined bones of his foot...wow.

Enjoy :)

Author's summary: Even for Holmes and Watson, some of the most important things in their lives take place in between cases, and adjusting to the new status quo is going to take some work on both sides.

Reccer's comments: A study in the life of a bored consulting detective and the effect that dealing (or not dealing) with his boredom can have on his partner. Gregson hasn't called with a new case in weeks and Holmes isn't taking it well. Set toward the end of season one, Joan juggles increasingly bizarre investigative training activities with Sherlock's anxieties about the lack of work. Interspersed are stray observations from outsiders and friends who jump to a wide range of conclusions (some accurate, some not so much) about what exactly is going on between them. This fic is replete with clever dialogue, beautiful moments of insight, creative and amusing activities, and a few fun facts about obscure ways people have died.

"Do you actually have an encyclopedic knowledge of the ways in which people die?"

"Encyclopedic might be overstating," said Sherlock, "but it's hard to think of another word that suffices. Ask me about the perils of cheerleading some time. Or ice cream. Terribly lethal, ice cream."

Author's summary: John goes to a medical conference. Sherlock goes round the bend. Hurray, mildly stalkery floof!

Reccer's comments: "Mildly stalkery floof" sums up the tone of this one pretty well :) It's not dark, it's charming and funny and at times poignant. John is away for a week, and Sherlock misses him, somewhat unhealthily, but the story manages to keep it overall endearing. I get the sense in this fic that Sherlock looks on himself as a kind of alien in a world that constantly rubs against him the wrong way, and that without John as a buffer he begins to unravel a bit. The author has a lot of fun with this idea, though there are also moments of melancholy or of harshness to balance the humor. There is, in addition, a case that injects a dose of pure adrenaline at an unexpected moment.

The author writes both action and emotion elegantly, and there is a lightness to the tone that makes me smile, sometimes in laughter and sometimes in sympathy. This story wraps a lot into its small package, and I find it quite delightful.

Reccer's comments: Charming and bittersweet story set near the end of the partnership, when the nemesis that can't be defeated is simple physical frailty, i.e. a realistic portrayal of old age. The two face it together as long as they can with plausible denial, seasoned by reminiscences of adventures-past, and eventual acceptance. No one dies in the fic, but it's not far off and they know it. They take the opportunity to be grateful for their decades together. The author tagged it as Holmes/Watson but it's easily read as platonic OTP if you prefer.

Author's summary: We know Holmes can ride a bicycle, but when exactly did he learn?

Reccer's comments: This is a lovely look at Holmes and Watson settling into a newly-established relationship and encountering their first pitfalls as a couple, one of which turns out, unexpectedly, to be bicycling. Of course, the real issues at stake are deeper and more poignant. This fic is special to me because it focuses on a small fight between Holmes and Watson, the type of minor friction and misunderstanding which is so common in real life relationships. It is a fight that is not particularly angsty, the kind of thing that could very easily be dropped rather than resolved. And yet Watson finds the courage to refuse to simply let it pass, and in the process he and Holmes delve into issues of communication and trust that prove essential.

The issues raised in this story are ones that I have always felt that ACD!Watson needed to work out with ACD!Holmes. It was delightful for me to find them delivered here with such a light touch, and with such a beautiful and heartwarming result.

Reccer's Comments: There are so many wonderfully creative forms of vidding, and one of my personal favorites is the vid which focuses on an inanimate element and captures its character. I have seen fantastic Sherlock vids celebrating the city of London, and even Sherlock's beloved coat, but this one cuts to the heart of things by focusing on 221B itself. The vid tells the story of Sherlock and John from their meeting to their parting (at the end of Series 2) through this intimate and atmospheric space. It's often said that 221B acts as a character in the series, but this vid really makes you see how true that is. A lovely and haunting piece.

Author's summary: John is living a quiet life at 221B with his son when Sherlock Holmes, dead and gone ten years, appears at his door. There’s an excellent reason he’s been gone, and several very good ones for taking him back, but the best one of all is Will, who falls in love with Sherlock as surely as John once did.
Reccer's comments: "“Do you know twenty questions, Mr. Sherlock?” Will asks. John hides a grin at Will’s form of address.

“I know hundreds of questions. Which twenty would you like?” Sherlock answers.

Will grins at him. He is becoming accustomed to Sherlock. He catches on quickly.

“Do you know how to play the game called ‘Twenty Questions?’” he rephrases. He is sitting cross legged at the low table in front of the sofa.

“I expect I do,” says Sherlock. “We called the game ‘Yes and No.’” He turns onto his back and crosses his hands on his belly, waiting patiently, the barest of smiles on his face. John’s tablet is in his hands but his focus in on Sherlock, on Will. On Will slowly bringing Sherlock back to life.

“Well my teacher calls it Twenty Questions,” Will informs him. “Though the answers are always Yes or No, aren’t they?” He cocks his head a bit to one side, a pose John always finds endearing. “Are you ready, Mr. Sherlock?”

“I’m ready,” says Sherlock. “Is it made of wood?”

Will purses his lips. He apparently does not like this first question. “Yes,” he says, reluctantly.

“Is it the violin?” asks Sherlock.

John shakes his head and hides a smile. Sherlock clearly does not understand how to play games with children.

“Yes,” grumbles Will."

For my last rec this month, I leave you with this brilliant AU of Sherlock's return. It was written prior to S3 and does have mentions of past John/Mary (John remembers his wife with love and it's clear her memory is kept alive for Will). I can't gush enough about this one. It's sweet, heartbreaking, loving, sad, funny, and hopeful. Will, John's young son, is one of my favorite fic OCs and is completely believable in this story. There's not a false note to be found here. I hope you enjoy this story.

Author's summary: Marcus gets along really well with Holmes' friends.

Reccer's comments:
Some of Elementary’s supporting characters get a chance to shine in this fic. Marcus meets and begins crushing on both Alfredo and Ms. Hudson, and Sherlock is a little appalled.

"I find it disturbing that you are forging relationships with my inner circle for reasons unknown," said Holmes. "You have ulterior motives."

Marcus took a second to parse that out, and then another second to figure out what to say. "Yeah, I guess," he admitted, finally. "My ulterior motive is that your friends are hot, Holmes."

Every character’s voice is spot-on, particularly Marcus’s as the viewpoint character, and the fic overall is just so delightfully fluffy, capturing perfectly the heady feeling of a burgeoning relationship. There are also some lovely moments between Sherlock and Joan, bickering and being domestic, and it’s wonderful to see Joan and Alfredo especially continuing to help Sherlock manage his sobriety.

I don't generally listen to podfics, but susan_voight's reading is very clear and smooth, and it has a sort of sly humor that really suits Marcus's flirting.

All in all, however, you consume this fic, the experience is a delight.

This fic is just six short scenes, during which nothing of note particularly happens, and yet it’s such a rich portrait of Joan & Sherlock’s relationship somewhere vaguely far in the future. eyebrowofdoom manages to capture really well Sherlock’s discomfort in his body and contrasts it really beautifully with how grounded Joan is. And this Joan has some absolutely lovely sharp edges, in full ownership of her own desires even as she thinks they aren’t quite good. It’s filled with absolutely gem-like moments of humor and pathos that manage to avoid the trap of excessive sentimentality.

Author's summary: Determining their edges, how they orient to each other, how they fit, is more engrossing than she thought it would be.

Reccer's comments: Elementary-verse Sherlock is as close to canonically submissive as U.S. network television is likely to get, and so back during season one when Joan & Sherlock’s relationship was solid, there was a trend towards writing them delving into a BDSM relationship. This fic is one of the best to come out of that trend, showing Joan feeling out her role as Sherlock’s Domme.

It’s deep in Joan’s perspective, wonderfully dry; neither character is much given to heart-to-hearts, of course, so the negotiation all takes place between the lines and off-screen; and it’s one of the rare D/s relationships that is entirely platonic, Sherlock needing to submit and Joan enjoying puzzling out how to dominate him with no hint of either romantic or sexual interest. There’s also just the slightest bit of humor about their interactions, totally in keeping with their dynamic during season one, and rounding out a thoroughly satisfying picture of their developing relationship.

Reccer's comments: We are still within the twelve days of Christmas and I am experiencing quite the winter where I am, so this delightful fic feels just right: Holmes and Watson sending Mrs. Hudson off to visit her family and fending for themselves (with a little assistance from the Irregulars), all of them struggling to create a Christmas feast in the midst of terrible weather.

One of my favorite things about this story is how the author demonstrates, without being overtly didactic, how much skilled and unskilled labor goes into running even a modestly sized household in the Victorian period. Without Mrs. Hudson and her countless counterparts, many a British home would have ceased to function. Also superb are Watson's voice and the dialogue, as well as the references to the details of daily living in London, which believably situates the reader in the late nineteenth century.

Reccer's comments: Not the piece I had initially chosen to rec (and it was hard to choose only one – in fact, take this as an artist rec) but this was posted yesterday and it was too cute not to mention. Some of my favorite moments in the show are the glimpses we get of Sherlock and John being all domestic at Baker Street, which is probably the reason why this piece caught my eye. A barefooted Sherlock in his PJs and dressing gown, holding two mugs of tea while bestowing a tender kiss on top of John’s head. An intimate and heartwarming moment.

If you like the artist’s style take a look at the “fanart” tag on their Tumblr, there are some awesome pieces. Some cute and fluffly, some very NSFW, others… more than a bit weird, but still stunning. A couple of favorites: Matrix!lock (because they look so dashing with their guns and shades, and Sherlock gets to keep a very dramatic coat) and octo!john (which is apparently a thing on Tumblr? I don’t know, really. But still, it’s quite gorgeous, it looks both eerily beautiful and soothing with its hues of blue). Reccer's comments:
This is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] what_alchemy's Battle Stratagem for the Domesticated British Male, which was previously recced on this community here. It's worth reading the original story, but you can still appreciate this one without prior knowledge.

It's a reflection on Sherlock and John's relationship over the course of many years, told from the perspective of two houses - 221B, and their post-retirement house in Sussex. It may sound a bit strange, but it works perfectly. The slightly removed narrational voice means that the Sherlock and John scenes stand as evocative vignettes. It feels like you're peeking through dusty windows at private glimpses of the course of a life, or rifling through old photos. It's beautiful and haunting and sweetly melancholic.

At heart, this fic is about memory, change, and the inevitable progression of life. It's a thought-provoking meditation on the places that are important to us, the memories we take with us when we leave them, and the traces we leave behind. I'm sure most of us would agree that 221B is as much a character as any of the people in the canon, and it's lovely to see her get a chance to shine.

Excerpt
“I miss 221B,” John whispers a long while later.

Immediately, I know that this must be their old house. 221B. So that’s her name. The place I smell in their clothes and their dishes, their furniture and their books. She must be lovely — they were together a long time. 221B. It’s a nice name. Not fancy or pretentious. It comes off the tongue like percussion. 2. 2. 1. B. And if we could meet, I’m certain I would like her.
