“My thoughts precisely, John,” Sherlock says.

In which evidence is presented that disqualifies Sherlock from being the Grinch, and everyone's shoes fit them perfectly well, thank you.

Reccer's comments: I come back and re-read this charming Christmas fic every year, and it never disappoints.  It boasts a Scotland Yard Christmas party, overplayed Christmas music, mistletoe, and our heroes renegotiating their relationship.  It's also single-handedly responsible for convincing me to accept "Fairytale of New York" as a Christmas song.  It's a sweet and spicy dose of holiday cheer.

Title: Thirteen Dances (Or, The Doctor Dances)
Author: Knackorcraft
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 17,544 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Written in response to this kink meme prompt: "John is a great dancer: we're talking all types. Not only is he able to pop and lock it, he's got some great ballet technique. He was best at lifting / holding girls." Thirteen chapters, thirteen dances, interwoven in two parallel tracks: John's past and his present. And maybe his future, too. (I do love a happy ending with a bit of smut.)

Reccer's comments: This is the quintessential fic for those who wanted to see that scene of Sherlock teaching John to waltz for the wedding. Only in this fic (written prior to series 3), it's John who teaches Sherlock. To tango. And yes, it's everything you hoped for and more.

John is the ultimate BAMF here, wowing all the lads and ladies with his moves both on and off on the dance floor. It's all done with complete aplomb and understatement, though, never turning John into some kind of flamboyant dancing wunderkind but keeping him grounded and quietly confident, making his dancing talents as natural a part of him as his gun-wielding or jumper-wearing. We get a broad survey of John's life through dance, from ballet lessons as a child to high school disco parties and a brief stint as the star of a viral YouTube video from his time in the army.

And woven through it all is the stomach-fluttering, throat-tightening, heart-stuttering metaphorical dance that Sherlock and John engage in as they feel their way toward each other's arms. And that tango scene. ;)

Reccer's comments: This piece is pure magic. I can’t quite tell whether it's a manip or a from scratch piece but it’s incredible either way. I love how it suggests that Sherlock’s mind may be occupied with several things at once, and that whatever his body is doing doesn’t necessarily reflect what’s going on in his head. Yet despite the busy-ness and the intimation of something verging on hyperactivity, the piece as a whole is very calm and soothing to view, and says to me that Sherlock is always in control, even when it might seem otherwise.

Author's summary: Anthea's love of French is one of the things Ella can't share.

Reccer's comments: I admire Ella and Anthea's relationship in the series Sleeping Beauty, but have highlighted this particular ficlet because of the musical references. Clearly fengirl88 is quite knowledgeable about classical music, including the vocal repertoire! She's selected a chanson [French art song] that fits one aspect of Ella and Anthea's relationship: both women work long hours in highly stressful, important jobs. To have a someone in whom, according to that chanson, "moonlight lies dormant,/A gentle moonlight of summer", someone full of "brightness" who can soothe and support their lover through sorrow and pain is priceless. There's also a little meditation on perfection vs. "good enough" in life and work that illuminates the nature of their love.

I heartily recommend listening to the recording linked at the bottom of the page. If you do not speak French, I'd also use the lyrics and their translation listed here.

A series of meetings, short and long, between Ella and Anthea. Fengirl88's prose is in turn thoughtful, humorous, wistful, hopeful as the two women's acquaintance develop into an adult romance during which they learn to know each other and negotiate the potential pitfalls in their moments together (ah, that BlackBerry!). I began to read this series because I've always been attracted to Fengirl's delicate prose and and deep insights, and I've continued to read it when the romance engaged my attention and the girls warmed my reader's heart.

Author's summary: Classical musician AU: Sherlock is a professional solo violinist, and John is his new piano accompanist. They've got a recital in three months, and someone doesn't want them to do it.

Reccer's comments: Sherlock and John love their work; sharing the adventure and joy of work is always a central part of their relationship, and I'm always especially interested to see that dynamic translated and made new by giving them a different profession. This story completely immerses us in the world of professional musical performance, and it's almost like watching Sherlock and John speaking a different language. I love the thoroughness of this AU setting, and the way that John and Sherlock's instantly recognizable personalities shine through in their new setting. They are just so competent. I love it. And they work so well together, and they 'get' each other, and Sherlock is a diva and John is very, very good at handling divas.

I love learning something new and seeing a career and lifestyle I would otherwise never have known anything about. The author holds a degree in piano performance, and their knowledge and experience shines through without ever bogging down the narrative. For realism, dedication to detail, and spot-on characterization, this story is hard to beat. Plus, it's just fun :)

Title: A Very Sherlock Musical
Author: faviconflawedamythyst

Length: 11,980 words

Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: So, you know how musicals are set in a world where people just burst into song every five minutes, and everyone around them automatically knows to join in with the tune and choreography? This fic is set in that world. John finds it extremely frustrating that Sherlock won't sing their theme song with him. Not Season 3-compliant.

Reccer's comments: This highly original premise could easily have devolved into camp or a trite songfic. Instead, it manages to be humorous, touching, quirky, and surprisingly moving. The story broadly covers the first two series and a speculative return a la The Empty House, but the meat of the plot treats the fact that Sherlock has never sung with anyone before (all but unheard of in this world) … and he isn't about to start now, just because he and John are friends.

Author's summary: Whatever it took, he was going to make this work.

Reccer's comments: “You do realize you’re prostituting yourself for tea, don’t you?”
This sounded humorous, an excellent, funny opening line, until I read on. The sentence echoed repeatedly in my head, as each new appearance of or reference to tea added to its weight and sharpness (a double-edged blade). From comedy to near-tragedy.

Homoromantic asexual Sherlock is my personal headcanon and best of all he is treated as a complex human being here, rather than a fetish object. John is not a one-dimensional savior, which does him justice as well. Their sex is sometimes sad, sometimes beautiful, but always represented with a refreshing air of reality.

[livejournal.com profile] bendingsignpost has nailed Sherlock, a brilliantly-voiced (unreliable) narrator, whose romantic and sexual past has twisted his notions of the proper way to conduct a relationship. Add to this a fantastic characterization of Molly, outstanding dialogue, a glorious passage of violin playing, and an ending that feels so well earned.

Note: If you love this, I enthusiastically recommend Ben's recent posting of the "AU of [his] AUs", AKA No Fixed Point. "Behavioural Modification" is one of the fics given the AU treatment. I'll say no more and leave it to the lucky recc'er who gets to do a formal rec of NFP...

Title: The Witch's Heart

Length: 54,596 words
Rating: General audience
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock has been at the University of Cambridge for a relatively short time, but he's already making waves, and not all for the good, to his family's chagrin. He's on notice for rule-breaking and working to patch his reputation when a mysterious body interrupts his plans. Can he turn his back on a dead boy in need, or are some things simply worth notoriety?

Reccer's comments: I tried for days to come up with a description of this story that will do it justice and make you want to put it at the top of your reading list. The story deserves it. You, the reader, deserve it. Alas, it makes me all too aware of why I read fanfiction and make recommendations, instead of writing stories myself.

"The Witch's Heart" is a complex story, interweaving action and insight. Magicbunni's crisp prose and sharp observations mirror Sherlock's turbulent mind. Her supporting characters, including several well-developed women, enrich the story.

It's the story of seventeen-year-old Sherlock at a vulnerable, transitional time in his development into the adult we know - disoriented by the attentions of girls and by the desires of his own adolescent body.

It's a story about music, Sherlock's soul, and his violin as he struggles with a piece that demands his emotional engagement as well as his technical skill.

It's the story of a case that draws Sherlock in almost without volition.

It's the story of Sherlock trying to find a place for himself in the shadows of a harsh father and a 'perfect' older brother. Arrived underage at Cambridge, he is too brilliant, too abrasive, and too pretty - irritating his peers, and arousing the suspicions of police.

It's the best young Sherlock story I've read and one of the best Sherlock stories, period. I love it even more each time I read it.

Reccer's Comments: There are so many talented vidders in the Sherlock fandom and beadedstar is one of the best. She uses a wide variety of music, overlaid images, and incredible timing to great effect. I picked this one because Swan Lake is not the kind of music that usually comes to mind when thinking fanvids but it works so well here to delineate the relationship between Sherlock and John. With the gorgeous black and white photography and the sparse piano it gives the impression of a silent film at times. I love the way the images and music alternately sweep around the lab and then still, holding a note, between approximately 0:43 and 0:53. My heart skips a beat. Beadedstar layers images and emotions beautifully, builds to a shocking moment and then lets us down gently. Incredible!

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments on the series: Guitar Man seems to be an ongoing series (new stories keep popping up, though most stand alone). I'm not quite sure how to cover it, since it's currently at 32 installments. I'm going to highlight a few, but I hope you will want to read them all, and preferably in order.

In some fics Sherlock's violin is almost a character in own right and music is the way he expresses his feelings. "Guitar Man" is another series in which music plays a key role as a medium for emotions, connections, healing, and growth. Sherlock has his violin, but John is the guitar man - previously the lead singer and songwriter for an almost-famous band in his teenage years.

This series covers a span of 30 years - from a year after John moves into 221B Baker to their retirement in Sussex. Some installments are light-hearted. Some are serious. They evoke laugh-out-loud merriment, sad tears, joyful tears, heart-in-throat anxiety, smiles of adorableness, and nods of insight. There are song lyrics. There are weddings. And glimpses into John's and Sherlock's childhoods. Guitar Man goes in unexpected directions, with unexpected pairings, but it always feels right, making full use of all the major canon characters. It even redeems Anderson!

Guitar Man beautifully conveys a friendship as profound and meaningful as any romance - as, in fact, a great love story.

I adore this series.

Pt was under the influence of cocaine when he was admitted. Pt was admitted for 28 days with possible extension to two months. Requested single unit. Request granted by special permission of the Director.

Reccer's comments: After my last rec centering on John's inner world, I thought it appropriate that I round out the month with a little navel-gazing on Sherlock's part as well. This is an absolutely fascinating look at Sherlock's past, pre-season one of the BBC series. Although it is nominally the prequel second part of an AU fic series (the first part being Pax Americana), you do not need to have read the first part, and in fact In Confidence can easily be read as a prequel to the television series itself.

The fic consists entirely of case notes, session notes and transcripts, emails, and letters from Sherlock's first stint in a rehab clinic, at age 25. Here is what a bit of it looks like (in this excerpt, CR is Carola Rivas, Sherlock's therapist):

CR:      Do you want it to shock me?
SH:      If you found this shocking, then I would seriously doubt your level of experience. Humans are cruel. Surely you know this by now.
CR:      So you are testing me, then? Trying to see what shocks me?
SH:      I test everyone I know. Only way to know who’s safe and who’s not.
CR:      I might be dangerous, then?
SH:      You might be. I have to wonder what kind of people are attracted to psychology, in the first place.

The fact that the author is herself in training as a clinical psychologist means that everything is set out with a high degree of technical detail and professional insight, from the terminology to the therapeutic structure and Sherlock's progress while an in-patient. I liked that the author didn't dumb things down or insert extensive notes to try and explain things to her lay readership, although she has a series of essays on psychological issues raised by the BBC series on her tumblr (http://emmadelosnardos.tumblr.com/critanalysis), and is enthusiastic about engaging in discussion on the topic. Having said that, I don't want to give anyone the impression that this is a dry, technical slogfest. It is one of the most engaging fics I have read in this fandom, despite the lack of an action-based plot.

This fic centers solely on Sherlock, although there is a strong supporting cast in the persons of Mycroft, Lestrade, and several excellent OCs, including a cousin, Georgina, and the staff at the treatment center, including in particular Sherlock's primary psychologist, Dr. Carola Rivas. We also get some glimpses of Sherlock's parents, maternal grandmother, and Victor Trevor, although only through the filter of Sherlock's memories. Even with such minimal and biased information, the characters are vivid and large, and it is the skill of the author that we are able to fill in for ourselves many of the omissions which Sherlock makes, allowing us to receive a fuller picture of Sherlock's home life and psyche.

The conversations between Sherlock and Rivas are rich and rife with mind games, attempts at oneupmanship, and playful banter. Sherlock's backstory and biography, as they are revealed, are riveting, tragic, and poignant in parts. There are also humorous moments, like the emails between Lestrade and his superior, Commander Gibbons. In the end, we all know how things turned out, but it is the journey to that point that is the interesting part.

Reccer's comments: I beta this, and I also rec this around, but make no apologies for doing so, as I’m in awe. [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren describes [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhorrors as ‘one of the best-kept not-quite-secrets of this fandom’, with some justification. Eldritch’s work won’t fit into your teabreak, but it’s worth clearing a couple of hours and sitting down to appreciate the full depth and scope of the series. ‘I just stumbled on this series and read straight through to the end, possibly without breathing,’ is a standard comment from new readers.
You certainly won’t be disappointed if you read this series for the porn, but for my money Eldritch also writes the best Sherlock POV I’ve seen. We really are inside the mind of a neuroatypical genius here. And fic five contains Sherlock recovering from trauma through his relationship with playing the violin:

Sherlock closed his eyes and put everything into his playing. Intensity, focus, concentration, emotive power. Rich, dense, multifarious, phrase shadings and implied counterpoint. So much to focus on, so much to interpret. The move from the major key back into the minor key.

The everything of it -- importuning anguish, joy, love, sorrow, beautiful and glorious with a dark, bitter bite that never made it anything less than reassurance of the spirit. This was music that told a person why they bothered living.

Reccer's comments: I haven't seen many art recs made, which is a shame as there are so many amazingly talented artists in this fandom. This stunning digital, from-scratch portrait captures Sherlock in a private moment depicting the intimate and little-explored relationship between him and his music. The warm colours and tactile, luxurious feeling of the clothing evoke a sense of homeliness and comfort that we rarely associate with the character.

I recommend, for a full appreciation of the piece and of the artist, to watch the time-lapse version of the process video. It is fascinating to see how the artist sketches out the main shapes, then develops the colours and lighting and reveals the bone structure and other fine details.

He’d lost his entire family in a roadside bombing, the only survivor. They’d found him wrapped around his mother, half her head gone, lap a soup of viscera and blood. He’d never have expected it from Sherlock.
