Author's summary: Companionship is where you find it.

Reccer's comments: What a joy to find that the disappointments of S4 didn't shake SarahT loose, but fired the author up instead. They've served up a few excellent Mycroft-centric fics in the last year, but this one came fast and ferocious on the heels of TFP.

The author is adept at conveying mood, and plunges here without hesitation into the dark well of resentment and misery where we find Mycroft after his retrieval from the cell in Sherrinford. The fic is a portrait in negative space of a brittle, traumatized man who has lost his sense of personal safety, mental stability, professional security and family connection.

Self-isolated, self-loathing, unable to accept support, Mycroft is stalked throughout by an unnerving shadow - a character recognizable to fans of the actor's other television work but fully independent here - who offers cruel insight and finally a sort of resolution.

This is a horror story, no apologies, no happy endings. Bitter greens to cleanse the palate, if you like.

It follows Sherlock through five phases of scientific experimentation during five different phases of his life, and concludes with Sherlock and John being happily retired in Sussex where they continue to experiment together. My favourite part was the first section, in which Mycroft's reaction to Sherlock's antics is priceless and will resonate with older siblings everywhere. Enjoy!

Pairing: John/Sherlock, OFC/OFC are the main pairings
Length: 119,503

Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Minor Character Deaths (including children, as happened during the war)
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Ireland, 1920. There's a war on, but no one seems to be playing by the rules. John Watson, injured and unemployed after his time at the Front, joins up with the special forces sent over to keep the peace, but when he meets Sherlock Holmes, the second son of the local lord, he begins to lose track of which side he is on.

Reccer's comments: True history AUs are rare indeed in any fandom, primarily because it takes so much research and practice to richly communicate a complex foreign culture and tell a good fictional story. Most history AUs require years of research to get to the point where the author can adroitly share the cultural and social realities of the peoples living in the past. Therefore, it's no surprise that most authors find it already challenge enough to skillfully create a genre AU like a Western. It's frankly a miracle that this fandom has been blessed with more than one history AU, let alone more than one that is as beautifully wrought as this one.

That lbmisscharlie loves 20th-century Irish and British history is made abundantly clear from the first chapter. John Watson, soldier of King and Country, is not patrolling Afghanistan, but another restive part of the British Empire, Ireland, just as England's grip is slipping. Although BBC!John never has reservations about his deployment to Afghanistan or what he did there, the John of this story will grow to question what he does in Ireland. Without slipping into overt preachiness, the author makes vivid the cultural clashes and how the characters choose to navigate them. Both sides commit atrocities, leaving one wondering who really is in the right.

John and the other canonical characters like Sherlock and Molly are deftly smoothed into their AU roles. For the most part, the political, social, and cultural beliefs and values they express and act on as English and Irish of the 1920s are blended skillfully with the traits of the BBC characters. Alterations to characters are made purposefully. For example, John is a not an officer or doctor in this fic, something that allows the author to play with class differences in England and in Ireland. Him not being a doctor is, more than once, subtly presented as a lack; something John could be, but never had the opportunity given his social class (several rungs below ACD's Watson for sure and maybe below BBC!John as well).

Of the many OCs, Eva stands out. Both Eva and Molly demonstrate the challenges of women living in Ireland during the troubles of the 1920s. They might support Irish independence, but the violence is personally painful, compelling them to look or hope for alternatives to the high costs of war. These women might risk themselves for Sherlock at different moments of the plot, but it is clear they have lives and concerns outside of Sherlock's Work.

Apart from the layered portrayals of major and minor characters, there is the vibrant sense of place throughout. From the bloody fields of the Continent near the end of WWI, to London and many locations in Ireland (primarily in and around Macroom), the scenery is beautifully rendered, often amplifying the mood of a particular scene. One of many examples is a cinematic rendering of the interior of the Honan Chapel on the grounds of University College in Cork, a setting that conveys the menace and mystery of what is facing John, before suddenly inspiring a brief moment of wonder and nostalgia:

Scrubbing his hands through his hair, John looks around the small chapel once more. The weak candlelight barely penetrates the dark corners, its flickering light producing strange, monstrous shadows in the lurking depths. Bracing one hand on the pew, John hauls himself to his feet and makes his way to the wall. Thrusting the taper in front of him, he traces the walls with his hand as he surveys the perimeter, noting anything that could be used as a weapon: this heavy candelabra, that bible stand, the blunt granite edge of the font. The altar is bare but for an embroidered altar cloth; underneath is empty.

From the altar, John walks down the steps back into the nave, testing the stability of the pews as he passes down the centre aisle. Dead ahead, St Patrick in his emerald robes offers a benediction, while down each side of the nave saints less familiar pass judgement. Pausing in the middle of the aisle, his eye is captured by a brilliant column of blue, its deep tones blending to amethyst in the fading light, which leads to an imperious face with a sharp, beaked nose. But for the long mass of crimson curls, the face, with the haughty set of its eyes and the thrusting, stubborn chin, could be familiar. Some forgotten ancestor of Sherlock’s, perhaps? Amused, John steps closer, craning his neck to examine the details, when his eye focuses and he frowns.

Surrounding the figure, at feet and head, are sparkling, crimson bees, their wingspan the breadth of a man’s spread palm. In one hand, the figure holds a miniature of the chapel, formed from golden beeswax, and John is startlingly thrown back to the summer. To Sherlock’s outstretched thumb, coated in honey, to his caring hands on the hives. John’s laugh, when it breaks the silence, is hoarse, peculiar and cracked. Beekeepers, watching him.

I could go on and on about the many virtues of this lovingly crafted fic, but I urge you to see for yourself!

Reccer's comments: One of my favourites from Holmestice last year. What I adore about the story is the description - it's delicately and vividly written and manages to completely create the sensation of the summer park, Victor's bedroom, and Victor's presence for the reader. The author does a great job of suggesting a youthful, more vulnerable and keen to impress but still very Sherlock-y Sherlock and a Victor who is a playful and loving counterpoint to him. The contrast between Sherlock's past sweet but ultimately fragile relationship with Victor and the more battered and bruised but still essential bond between John and Sherlock is beautifully drawn.

There is a scorchingly hot shotgunning scene as well, so if smoking kink is your thing at all, I think you'll enjoy this fic.

Author's summary: No coherent summary available, but a patchwork of the chapter summaries sounds like this:

This story contains the mystery of a stolen Mercedes, talk of Facebook Etiquette, and Sherlock taking off his trousers. Twice. And telling us what kind of shampoo he uses. John comes out with some impressive Swears. Sherlock is an Air Kisser and a Shy Pisser. Lots of Mycroft being badass. John making Fake Sex Noise and Sherlock thoroughly abusing the Welsh language.

Reccer's comments: The summary, though the patchwork is my work, the words and descriptions are all [livejournal.com profile] r_scribbles and the fic is written with just the same humor and sass. That last part, about Sherlock thoroughly abusing the Welsh language, is by the way how I think about this fic in my mind library and I smile every time I do so because this fic is delightful.

This is my absolute favourite of the “pretending to be a couple”-trope, partly because it’s not an excuse to get the boys together, but mostly because it’s such a fun, yet moving, fic. It’s a touching story about friendship and the ridiculous things you sometimes end up doing for your friends. It’s a post-pool fic, so parts (like Sherlock’s family history) have been jossed, but that doesn’t take anything from the fic. It doesn’t portray Victor Trevor in a very good light, so know that going in if you’re a Victor fan.

I put in links to all five chapters because there is no “next chapter” or the like at the bottom of each.

It feels like it should be exactly those things, because it's really a story about Sherlock grieving, and his grief is as unique and extraordinary as he is. This is a story that has stayed with me.

Title: Don't Is Not the Same as Haven't
Author: Impractical Beekeeping
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Victor Trevor
Length: 45900 words
Rating: Mature
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: When Sherlock Holmes told John Watson he didn't have friends, it wasn't the same as saying he never had.
In 1995, he steps on a dog's paw in a darkened chapel. The resultant wound is a minor thing, but the friendship he forges with Victor Trevor will leave scars for years to come.

Reccer's comments: "You never heard me talk of Victor Trevor?"
The Adventure of the Gloria Scott is quite the fanfic fodder – many a stories have been written about Sherlock’s first friend and his first case. Here’s another retelling of the ACD story.
I absolutely loved this fic. It’s brilliantly written, incredibly tender, moving and angsty in places (you can see the moment when things start to go downhill but it doesn't make it any less heartbreaking), with characters one feels almost compelled to sympathize with. I love this Victor Trevor to bits. He’s not quite the opposite of Sherlock but he’s a great complement to him. If Sherlock is science, Victor is poetry – he’s charming and romantic while Sherlock’s still his prickly self, even if he still isn’t the man he’ll become, and he's a bit more naïve than his friend in the matters of the heart. They both are intelligent and lonely young men, though in Victor’s case it’s not his personality so much as his disability that sets him apart from his peers. He’s also a literature enthusiast and the fic contains a rich imagery and many literary references (and if you like Mycroft as much as I do, here’s a young Mycroft subtly working his way up the ladder while watching over his baby brother.)
I don’t think my review could do this fic justice – just go read it if anything about it sounds interesting to you, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Excerpt: If [Victor] thinks Sherlock is a freak, he doesn’t show it.

It is only natural, then, to talk for hours, in a seamless, quicksilver flow. Sherlock forgets the dog bite, his cigarettes, and anything that isn’t now, isn’t them talking about absolutely everything.

As grey light streaks through the chapel windows, Sherlock stares at Victor: openly, unblinkingly—an unusual luxury—and thinks, Your eyes see me but you do not. The novelty is captivating.

“I hear birds,” Victor says, a moment later. “Rosy-fingered dawn spoils another evening’s entertainment.”

“Rosy-fingered dawn?” Sherlock repeats.

“Nosiest of all the Homeric gods.” Victor smiles ruefully, and adds “I suppose, though, that this means I’d best return and get myself sorted out before my tutor sends out a search party. People do seem to get unaccountably worried when they think they’ve misplaced me.”

“Yes, of course,” Sherlock says. Even to himself, he sounds disappointed.

“Is it too strange if I say that I’m glad this happened? Not the dog bite, obviously. The rest of it. Meeting a sort of intellectual kindred spirit, I mean.” Victor is feeling about for the dog’s harness as he speaks, but his face is turned towards Sherlock. “Do you agree?”

“I...yes. Certainly the best time I’ve ever had in a chapel. Not that the bar was set terribly high before now.”

“So we should do it again?” Victor’s smile is open and warm.

“Absolutely,” Sherlock agrees, without hesitation.

“Walk me home then, so you know where to find me in future. You can see where I live and tell me if it’s as hideous as I suspect.”

Title: Letters Series
Author: faviconearlgreytea68
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 16K with 4 parts complete (and a 5th part in the midst of posting)
Rating: General to Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: None provided for the series. Summary for part 1: While he's dead, Sherlock writes John letters.

Reccer's comments: Everything you wanted them to say to each other. But it turns out, that may not be enough.

The first and third parts of the series consist entirely of notes that Sherlock wrote to John during his 'hiatus', never intending for John to read them (or did he?). They are pitch-perfect, ranging from humorous to heartbreaking. As they are described from John's POV in part two:

Sherlock came across loud and clear in them. John could practically hear his voice as he read. It was as if Sherlock had suddenly dropped by and treated him to a monologue on the things that were annoying him. It was so much like it had been Before everything that John actually forgot to be heartsick and just lost himself a little while in the flow of Sherlock’s comments and observations.

It's not just a little slice of home, though. Through the letters, Sherlock reveals some of what his time away entails him doing, and how he is affected, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I was very taken with how much could be shown in so few words. Some of the notes are only two or three words, while others go on for several paragraphs, and that in and of itself is telling.

Parts two and four, then, are written in a more familiar narrative style and show what happens when John finally does read the notes. The results are both heart-wrenching and empowering, but even once everything is out in the open, nothing is really solved yet.

The fifth part of the series has just started posting as a multi-chaptered fic. However, the first four parts complete a nice arc, and although they do leave you wanting more, it's not so open-ended that I'd warn anyone to wait.

Reccer's comments: One of the first series I read in the fandom, recently completed. Marvellous from start to finish. Lotherington brings John and Sherlock back to the 1930s and '40s, maintaining their core personalities while skilfully altering certain details to fit the culture and society of pre-war and WWII-era England. For example, the dialogue: her characters use period slang and syntax, yet still make use of verbal tics of the canon characters. As someone fascinated by the history of gender, I was blown away her ability to show different contemporary models of masculinity (Sherlock as a man of the upper classes, John solidly middle class) without doing violence to the characterization or making it seem artificial or didactic. I can go on and on if you like: Lotherington's attention to gesture and costume, the superb realization of rural and urban Britain of the 1930s and 1940s, the gorgeous romance of two men in love who are forced to hide it, the vibrant OCs, the use of motifs to...well, you get the picture. Reccer's comments: What it would be like if Holmes and Watson were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and if there were huge amounts of UST between Butch and Sundance. I swear the ending gives me goosebumps every time.

His low expectations include recuperation and boredom. Instead he finds a ruined landscape, a series of grisly murders, and one of the world's weirdest neighbors.

Reccer's comments: I'll admit, it took me a while to get the hang of 'hearing' the characters speaking in the local vernacular. Other than that, though, the transfer to this setting works remarkably well.

The world-building is fantastic in this, although it's not so much building as recreating. From the geography and plant life to the moral attitudes and religious sensibilities, the clothing styles and the economy, I felt as if I had been transported to 1970s Appalachia without so much as blinking. The authors also worked in a great deal of both local and national history, including the hippie movement, strip mining, and Watergate.

All of that, however, is incidental to the fantastic original case the story is built around. It's a clever premise, and I didn't catch on so I was duly surprised by the reveal.

Reccer's comments: Striking, intricate multimedia character studies of post-Fall Sherlock and Mycroft, consisting of graphics, quotations, and prose poems written by mazaher and Jns. Sherlock and Mycroft reflect on their present and past experiences, and consider their relationships with others. A Narrator/OC (HT) provides occasional "voiceovers".

I adore authors who try to make the reader work a bit (to good purpose!) and are not afraid of ambiguity. There is a loose narrative arc, which means one can read this as a complexly unified whole. Nevertheless, I can also see myself returning again and again to individual sections of this work, enjoying them as standalone meditations on two very human brothers caught up (for a time) in the Spider's great web.

Author's summary: Loneliness and shared slumber are an odd combination.

Reccer's comments: To be honest, I don't know whose home this takes place in. When I first read it, I assumed it was Lestrade's, as Sherlock in Lestrade's home is a particular love of mine. But maybe not. It's someone's home, and it takes place entirely on a couch, which is home for Sherlock, or at least home base.

The author calls this a little "snapshot" of the two of them, without context. I'm not sure where they are, why Lestrade's hair and collar are wet, or why Sherlock is "wrecked." It might be nice to know. I'm reccing it for the writing, though, for the conceit, and for the sheer smoky sexiness here, where Lestrade is drawn to Sherlock's breathing.

Contains tobacco, the really good cigarettes. You might doubt how well this could work if it were described outside the story.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
