Title: The Flight of John Watson
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] JessamyGriffith
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 26646 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: none (see tags)
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: When Sherlock is forced to share his eyrie, he is determined to make the best of it. However, he has no intention of ever pair-mating. It's a pity his body has other ideas.
John Watson can't believe his luck when he meets Sherlock Holmes. But who would ever want a flightless Tiercel with PTSD who can't even manage a courtship flight?

Reccer's comments: Beautifully done piece of imaginative worldbuilding, this is about as au as a story can get and still be in character. I truly loved the descriptions of both avian behaviour and of flight, so very well realised here.

There is also a sequel, Fledgling.

Oh, yay! This story is so awesome, utterly unique and well-done and so far out in left field you're just left staggered by the fact that Jessamy managed to make it real and relatable. She'll be tickled pink that it got recced.

I second Tryfanstone's enthusiasm.

Seconding this. Excellent worldbuilding! Showing how avian behavior affected society and culture made it textured and realistic.
