Title: Watershed
Author: finangler
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 40,000 words
Rating: E
Warnings: the crimes investigated include human trafficking, rape, and murder, though none are graphically portrayed; also has themes of drug use/abuse
Verse: other
Author's summary: In the year 2207, John Watson went to war. (Written in response to the shkinkmeme anon-prompt: SH in Space.)

Reccer's comments: This fic is remarkable for many reasons. It combines economical yet expansive world-building, clever plot twists which impact both the case and the relationship of the characters, a gritty futuristic setting, and a love story which does not run smoothly and is all the better for its frictions and false starts. Its happy ending, once reached, feels earned.

It is also remarkable because it presents a version of these characters which does not fit entirely within any particular established 'verse. The story was completed several months before the BBC series first aired in 2010, and this author independently undertook, not only a modernization of the Doyle characters, but a projection of them into the future. It is fascinating to see the characterization decisions here made, and to meet versions of Holmes and Watson who are in some ways quite similar to what the BBC characters became (in some instances the parallels are astonishing), but who remain in some respects unique, while at other times reminiscent of the Ritchie or Granada versions.

This fic begins as a version of Doyle's "Man with the Twisted Lip," but the case quickly takes on a life of its own. It offers a new version of Holmes and Watson's first meeting, and throughout the story Watson's issues surrounding self-perception, illness, and trust are dealt with in a complex and compelling way. I find this a rich and rewarding read.

It should be noted that the story is a complete and satisfying whole, but although it is listed as being part of a series, the sequel fic was abandoned after only one chapter so you may be happier simply stopping at the end of this story. (The sequel makes quite an interesting epilogue, though it raises important character issues which are never resolved). If you are interested in seeing more of this author's work, and in particular how they engaged with the BBC characters once that series aired, their excellent BBC adaptation of "The Devil's Foot" has already been recc'd on this comm. Authors who can skillfully entwine original mysteries with nuanced relationship and character drama are treasures, and I hope you enjoy finangler's work as much as I have.

Title: Coins on my Eyes
Author: indybaggins
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock & Mycroft
Length: 35,000
Rating: M
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 'Sherlock spent nights lying awake, listening to the rustling of John’s hands on the bedcovers. The dull thumps of John’s head against the headboard. The rhythmic grinding of his teeth. The soft, hungry sounds of his mouth and throat.'

There is an unknown infection rapidly spreading through London, fear, unspoken love, dead who cannot die... and a way for them to come back. Post-zombie AU!

Reccer's comments:

This fic was one of the highlights of my summer. The writing is stellar, the characterizations nuanced, the relationships breath-taking, the moral conundrums complex, and the setting horrifying. The story shifts perspective between its main characters as it follows the devastating progress of an incurable disease. Mycroft's perspective is insightfully rendered as he adopts ruthless measures to stem the spread of the plague while at the same time reluctantly supporting Sherlock's attempts to cure John after he seems long lost to infection.

This story portrays the deeply generous love between Sherlock and John, and Sherlock and Mycroft, without ever slipping into sentimentality. Its central characters move and breathe with extraordinary detail and emotional integrity. The intense crises they each face bring out the core qualities of their personalities. I think it's an amazing piece of work.

(Possible warnings: this fic deals with end of life issues and caregiving for debilitated loved ones; it portrays suicidal ideation and mentions suicide and euthanasia; it also contains some imagery that is reminiscent of the Holocaust.)

Title: Hope
Author: lifeonmars
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 3,500 words
Rating: not rated, but I would say PG-13
Warnings: character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: In the end, John will have died for Hope. The universe has such a charming sense of humour.

Reccer's comments: To tell you the truth, I usually avoid stories that involve the death of a main character; I am not often in the mood for tragedy. However, I tried this story because I admired the author's other works, and I am so glad that I did. It made me cry actual tears of joy, because I find its themes to be so full of love and connection and comfort.

This story takes off on a tangent from "A Study in Pink" -- in this version of events, the medical condition that defined the villain in ASiP transfers instead to the hero. John's bullet wound gave him more than a discharge from the army -- it gave him a brain aneurysm. He is a walking dead man, aware that any moment could be his last. Being John, he exhibits both a mordant sense of humor about this, and also a self-effacing concern for others that leads him to avoid contact as he tries to unobtrusively wait out the rest of his time. Then he meets Sherlock Holmes, who quickly puts paid to that.

John thought his life was basically over, but instead he finds the very best of it is right there for the taking. So much so that he can't bring himself to admit the truth of his condition to Sherlock. The delicate, unspoken tension between John's secret and Sherlock's perception runs through the story, and its resolution is as full of hope and love as it is of sorrow.

I find this a deeply moving and life-affirming story, and it reminds me of Shakespeare's hopeful lines: "The setting sun, and music at the close, / As the last taste of sweets, is sweetest last."

Title: Dawn Before the Rest of the World, Series
Author: faviconPoppyAlexander
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ca 37K in 5 parts
Rating: Teen to Mature
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: None provided for the series. Summary for part 1: In one of the grand houses of England in the 1920s, butler Sherlock Holmes is wooed to pieces by the world's most romantic gardener, John Watson.

Reccer's comments: Sweet bajeebus, the sexual tension in this. The author's tag about history's hottest almost-kiss is not kidding. The first part of the series describes how the two men become lovers, but the other three parts are no less hot, sweet, and tender without going full PWP (although there are a couple very titillating sex scenes). Their story is told mainly through looks and outwardly chaste touches, letters and acts of devotion from afar.

This is a complete AU set in the historical context of post-World War I England. I thought the author did a good job of keeping us aware of the period through things like the level of medical care available and the clothing, yet not overwhelming the reader with too much information. The story of these two men is definitely the main point of interest.

A love affair for the ages.

Title: Raison d'être
Author: faviconAmphigoricSymphony
Pairing: John/Mary, John/Sherlock
Length: 148,681 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The missing months of His Last Vow, starting from Sherlock dropping in John's arms at 221B and carrying through the months of Hospital he endured. This is a study in emotional and physical trauma, striving to stick as close to the cannon plot as possible. At Christmas Dinner, Mycroft asks why they are even celebrating. His mother's answer, 'Sherlock is home from hospital,' leads us to believe Sherlock was in hospital the majority of the time frame of his fall from shock at Baker Street, to nearly Christmas itself. We have no explanation for what John was doing all that time, so this is an effort to fill the gap. Enjoy!

Reccer's comments: This is basically nearly 150K of angst-ridden, heavy-on-the-hurt sickfic. It picks up when Sherlock collapses following the meeting in 221B where he agrees to take Mary's case and leads into a grinding, never-ending series of complications, each one worse than the last. I honestly had no idea so many things could potentially go wrong with the human body (and mind). John isn't spared either, as he pushes himself far beyond his physical and mental limits in an effort to be there for Sherlock at the same time as his entire life has plunged off the deep end. If that kind of unhappiness, suffering, and graphic medical interventions gets your motor running (like it does mine), off you go, have fun. :)

But that's actually not the reason why I'm reccing this, because this goes way beyond being just a sickfic. The first distinguishing feature is all about Mary. This is the first fic I've read dealing with those missing months between when Sherlock gets shot and John's reunion with Mary at Christmas that actually got my head wrapped around how John could possibly consider forgiving - and reconciling with - Mary. We see John's genuine distress over what she's done crash head-on with his heart, which can't let go of her. Love is irrational, we learn, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed. And at the same time, just because two people love each other doesn't mean they will have a happy ending, no matter how much they want or even deserve it.

Excerpt... )

The second reason why this fic gets a special mention from me is the fantastically complex dynamic that is created between John and Sherlock. They are deeply in love with each other - and admit as much - but there isn't anything overtly sexual between them, even though they do become physically quite close and share a bed. (This might fall under the heading of infidelity, even though Mary doesn't seem bothered by it, in case that's something you'd rather not read.) They soon fall into - or perhaps were already in - a codependence that is somehow both comforting and troubling. They need each other to get better, but their fears, anxieties, and even physical well-being feed off each other, paradoxically making them both sicker the longer they are together. The depiction of their deterioration is really brilliantly done, as we see it from both inside (we are privy to both of their headspaces) and out (the reactions of their friends and physicians).

And the final reason I couldn't put this down is the subplot of what is going on with Mycroft, Magnussen... and possibly Moriarty. We don't get much more than a few teases, but it's clear that the authors have something deep and dastardly planned, including a very piquant hint at a past love interest of Mycroft's.

The ending of the fic is thus more of a pause, with a sequel underway. It ends in a good place, though, with both John and Sherlock more or less physically intact and in control of all their faculties, and a hopeful resolution to the personal matters that have been plaguing John.

Title: The Traffic Lights series, consisting of two stories, Traffic Lights for the Colour Blind and The Sky for the Reaching
Author: lavvyan
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 14,600 words for the two stories combined
Rating: T
Warnings: suicidal ideation
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 1) Traffic Lights for the Colour Blind: In which it's not the war John is missing, Sherlock needs to find new ways to hang on to his flatmate, and Moriarty tries to get himself a pet of his own. Features also: guns, tea, the reason Sherlock Holmes won't take the tube, cell phones, a budgie, and one obnoxious older brother. 2) The Sky for the Reaching: In which John isn't quite living in a war zone, Sherlock experiments, and Bill Murray (not the actor) wants to get laid. Features also: pins, sponges, the question of whether or not Sherlock Holmes likes to cuddle, nightmares, a case, and seventeen steps.

Reccer's comments: This story series begins in a dark place but ends in amazing light. It was written after Series 1 and portrays John as being a little too in love with danger and as quietly managing a persistent death wish. Sherlock is still wedded to his self-image of high functioning sociopathy, and his early management of John's risky tendencies is cavalier at best. But the stories chronicle the ways that these men begin to find their peace as well as their war in one another. Though the series is not long, it manages to include vintage BAMF John and a few words and gestures from Sherlock that simply took my breath away. The second story in particular becomes an asexual and dazzlingly unconventional romance. This series never fails to make me happy.

I also love the author's writing style with its many casually insightful turns of phrase. Lavvyan hits so many lovely character notes, the familiar domestic scenes feel fresh. (I believe English is not lavvyan's first language, which makes their elegant prose all the more impressive). A lovely series.

Title: Give Me the Quiet Things
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lady_t_220
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: It doesn't say, but I'd guess around 12,000-15,000 words
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: description of traumatic injury
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John had never been afraid of asking "What's the worst that can happen?" He was pretty sure he'd already seen it.

Reccer's comments: In this story, John has amnesia in the aftermath of a terrible injury he suffered during a case gone wrong. I love that the story captures the strangeness of John's experience, his sense of frustration at the expectations of those closest to him who want him to be the person he was before, the way he feels like a stranger in someone else's body. Sherlock's reactions are so different from everyone else's, so free from expectation, with a low-level constancy that John comes to rely on without realizing it. He's restrained, just muted enough to be soothing when John finds most interactions uncomfortable and overcharged. Eventually, though, John sees that he is living Sherlock's nightmare more than his own, and begins to suspect that Sherlock's silence has more than one motive.

I can't put my finger on precisely what it is about this characterization of Sherlock that I love so much, but it feels very real to me. Also, I personally enjoy that the story pulls off the amnesia trope with no dub-con, and that Sherlock and John actually talk through a load of complicated issues, without wrapping everything up in a bow either. Probably my favorite hurt/comfort in the BBC 'verse.

Length: 22,839

Warnings: None, although there is some gore
Verse: ACD books
Author's summary: A look at what happened to Watson, from the Battle of Maiwand to his return to England. As this is a prequel to STUDY IN SCARLET, Holmes makes no appearance whatsoever.
Reccer's comments: Pompey has constructed a fabulously detailed and meticulously researched account of Watson's service in Afghanistan. What was it like to be in the disastrous battle at Maiwand? What exactly did Murray do to save Watson? What were the events that rendered Watson "thin as a lath and brown as a nut" and wrecked his health before his meeting with Sherlock Holmes? This fic could have been adapted as a movie script - it's that good. No slash, but you won't miss it.

Title: Getting Better Series
Author: faviconLittlePippin
Pairing: John/Sherlock, background Lestrade/Molly
Length: 199,424 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: None provided for the series. Post-Reichenbach return, hurt/comfort with major injury and illness.

Reccer's comments: Oh, poor John. Poor Sherlock. The things they go through in this series. They are, respectively, shot and blown up, then endure seizures, endless vomiting, nausea, headaches, loss of bladder control, fainting, septicemia, and the flu. They are in and out of hospital so much it's a wonder they don't have a permanent reservation.

It's not just a lot of being sick, though. Each installment in the series has a unique and original case that needs to be solved, forcing the two detectives to keep up a punishing pace that pushes them to their mental and physical limits, and beyond.

And as if that weren't enough, there is their new relationship status to contend with. The series starts out with Sherlock's post-Reichenbach return, where the two are just friends, and moves slowly into a romance with deeper feelings. There is no explicit sex (see the rating), but that doesn't hinder the emotional and physical development of their relationship at all.

Excerpt... )

The writing is no-nonsense, clear and straightforward and just a pleasure to read. The series caused me several bleary-eyed late-nighters as I devoured each installment in turn.

It actually reminds me in a lot of ways of magicbunni's fabulous Baker Street Series*, only with slash instead of gen. And more puking.

This series was originally posted on ff.net a while ago, but has now been copied over to AO3. Author's summary: John decides to take things into his own hands, so to speak.

Reccer's comments: This is a completely unsentimental self-harm fic. John comes back from the war, feeling useless and broken. He develops his own ideas about the best forms of therapy for this.
As one of Consequentialism’s AO3 tags reads, ‘You can be fucked up without being a woobie’. Author, POV character and third party – no prizes for guessing that’s Sherlock – just look at the subject and its functions straight on. One of those pieces of writing that help you understand just a little bit more about how people get through life.

Title: Vessel

Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 15,695 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: That was the surprising bit – the way his doctor said it, eyes shining with sympathy but breathing it out, shifting it off her shoulders and thrusting it onto his, making him take it like an unwanted gift.

Reccer's comments: This is based on a prompt from the Kink Meme, but I very strongly encourage you not to read the prompt before reading the fic, as it will completely spoil it.

The premise of the story is that John finds out he has cancer. There are a lot of descriptions of medical procedures, including the effects of chemotherapy, so if this is a trigger or squick for you, then you may want to proceed with caution. It's really not all too graphic or gory, though.

There are two things I especially enjoyed about this story. The first one is how Sherlock and John deal with the diagnosis, and the subsequent treatment. Sherlock goes into investigative mode to cope, treating the cancer like a suspect in a case. This causes a split reaction in John: on the one hand, he feels that Sherlock is not being emotionally supportive, because he spends all of his time looking up articles and at the lab; but on the other hand, he begins to see how very deeply Sherlock cares about him. I felt that the author showed both of their internal emotional landscapes with great finesse and depth.

Excerpt:

Sherlock looked up at John and for a minute there was a terrible dry nothing in his eyes that John had only seen once before, at the pool, when Sherlock had looked across at him and they had both seen the jagged precipice they stood on.

And yet, John remembered, even then he had seen in Sherlock’s eyes not the fear of falling, but of how he would work it so he could catch John.

John knew if he had to see that dry nothing in Sherlock’s eyes again it would kill him before the cancer could, so he did the thing they were both least expecting: stepped in close, wrapped his arms around Sherlock and pulled the hurt, cold body against him.

Sherlock said stiffly, “Obviously I’m also investigating that aspect of things.  If someone would just –” but John, furious with himself, whispered, I’m sorry, you are, you do, I’m sorry, it’s all right, against the soft nap of Sherlock’s shirt and Sherlock went quiet, and his arms came up around John and held him back.

The other thing I liked about the story is the way in which the author brings in connections to multiple previous cases from the series. It is very cleverly done, and the clues are all there once you know what you are looking for, but of course you don't until afterwards.

I experienced grief, warm fuzzies, shock, and joy (pretty much in that order) through the course of reading this story. It delivers on all levels, emotionally and intellectually, and is just a really tightly-written, clever piece of fan fiction.

Author's summary: At Baskerville, John is infected by a virus that turns him into a genius. But when the infection progresses into neurodegeneration, it's a race against time to save himself. Flowers for Algernon fusion.
Reccer's comments: This was more emotionally gut-wrenching, to me, than Alone on the Water. The arc that happens within John's mind; the joy that he gets when he realizes he is a genius and the way Sherlock treats him feels so realistic. Then we are tossed into the development of Sherlock and John's relationship alongside the degeneration of John's mind and it's absolutely incredible. You can feel John's pain as his mind slips away from him. The author also takes the time to research/include medical journal articles which makes for a nice piece of world building.

ExcerptBut John’s been devouring research articles in his free time, because understanding them keeps his mind occupied and he gets anxious when he’s not thinking. Figuring out the puzzle of the human body is infinitely more interesting than what he’s going to have for dinner or what Sarah’s going to think about his new tendency to remain motionless and stare out the window for long periods of time after lunch.

This must be what it’s like to be Sherlock, John realizes.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
