Title: The Men Who Talked Between the Words
Author: Odamaki
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade, brief John Watson/Mary Morstan, Harry Watson/OFC, James Sholto/OMC, Billy Wiggins/OFC
Length: @460,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: past abuse (including implied/referenced child abuse), implied/referenced suicide (not of any character from the TV show), implied/referenced drug use
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John expected to be a father some day; he expected to have the house, and the wife and the nice suburban job. Sherlock never expected to have children, in part because he never expected to make it past 30. As it turns out, you don't get a choice. Crammed into Baker Street with a baby, John struggles with single-parenthood and his own fears, while Sherlock treads the fine line between doing too little and saying too much.

Reccer's comments: It's hard to think of what I can say about this fic that hasn't already been said. Four years in the making, of a length comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this story took extraordinary commitment to create and the end result is simply astonishing. I've been reading Holmesian fiction for quite a long time, and I've never run across another story that felt quite like this one. There's something so authentic and keenly observed about the details. There's a realism here that reaches out and never lets me go. The characters - both the main and the secondary ones - have such distinct voices, and their lives and relationships are deeply grounded and believable.

This is a realistic parentlock fic, and it's the deliciously slowest of slow-burn romances, and that heart of the story is beautiful. But that's really not all there is to it. Odamaki doesn't allow Sherlock, John, and the baby to live in a bubble. The story is full to bursting with the many other people who know them, who affect and are affected by them. Both Sherlock and John have important inward work to do before either is ready to think about romance. It's a story about growth, about healing, about hard-fought and hard-won maturity. About friendships and familiar places that won't stay neatly unchanged, and about painful habits and histories that won't fade away without long and deliberate effort.

When I think of this fic, the love story and the family Sherlock and John make together stands at the center. But I also think of Sherlock and Molly's quiet happiness working on her research together at Barts; James Sholto walking John through his fledgling orchard; Billy playing chess in hospital; Harry lounging with her girlfriend on the couch; Greg's tiepin; the moms in John's playgroup; the voice at the other end of a helpline.

This is a compelling fic about love and family, but it's also about all those other nooks and crannies of life that too often get left out of love stories. There's a village of vivid people wrapped up in this story, and I love them all.

(Also, I should add: 1) the story is complete. It ends at chapter 27. There are still new chapters going up, but they are 'bonus material' like deleted scenes and FAQ responses from the author. 2) The story goes AU after series 3, and incorporates no elements of series 4. The baby is a girl, but she is not the canonical 'Rosie' of the TV show).

Author's summary: Appearances deceive. That is, one might say, their chief function.

Reccer's comments: I have fallen woefully behind in recc'ing the many wonderful fics in this month's ACD Holmesfest, so at this point I will plan to leave thumbnail recs for most of my favorites in this comm's open recs post. But I couldn't finish out my month as a recc'er here without giving a bit more in-depth attention to this remarkable story.

Amid deep historicity and attention to period detail, this fic reconnects us with Kitty Winters and Violet de Merville as the entrepreneurs of a uniquely Victorian business venture. Although they were antagonists in The Illustrious Client, they have now joined forces to make their own way in the world. However, their business has become the target of a strange and disturbing series of attacks, and Holmes and Watson's investigation raises questions that skirt close to some of their own long-hidden secrets and desires.

With a strong case fic as its backbone, this story gives us pining of the very finest vintage. Holmes's delicate yearning throughout the ins and outs of his work and his daily life is beautifully expressed. The language is confident and balances lyricism and metaphor with great doses of humor and practicality. An engrossing and moving treat for the heart as well as the head, with a sublime and romantic ending.

Sample this masterful writing -- I think you will be glad that you did!

Author's summary: Watson struggles to uncover a mystery in a seaside village. Holmes is less than helpful.

Reccer's comments: The ACD Holmesfest is underway with so many delightful entries already and more to come! While this comm has an open recs post for the fest, it's also nice to have some more detailed recs. So let me start by calling your attention to this unique and lovely piece.

Here is a glimpse of Holmes and Watson, on the cusp of retirement, making their way through what Watson considers a lack-luster investigation amid the chilly ambience of a seaside resort town well past its summer prime. The author creates the details of the scene - the emptying streets, the dusty police station, the cramped local pub, the dark cliffside path - with an excellent eye for the most telling details.

The real marvel, though, is the keen and convincing take this story offers on Holmes and Watson's relationship, obviously established for many long years and deeply imbued with both affection and irritation. It is comfortable and prickly, teasing and sharp, boring on one level while obviously content and loving in its fundamentals. Here are two men who have made a life together for so long that they get on each other's nerves precisely because they know each other so well and are so completely synchronous in their routines.

Heart-warming with a tinge of melancholy, this fic left me feeling as if I had gotten a realistic and affectionate glimpse at this couple who, even ensconced in the mild aggravations of daily life, clearly can't live without each other.

Title: A Study in Rehabilitation

Author's summary: In a rehabilitation clinic in London, John Watson is just home from Afghanistan and having a difficult time coming to terms with the bullet in his shoulder’s devastating impact on his life. But now there’s a serial killer on the loose — and a certain consulting detective is on the trail…

Reccer's comments: This is a prequel AU to the BBC Sherlock series, answering the question: what if Sherlock and John had met just one case earlier? This is a brilliant casefic full of wonderfully smart deductions. It's also an intense and very well-researched medical drama that allows John to rise to an emergency with utterly convincing skill. Best of all, it catches the perfect chemistry of that first meeting once again, with clever allusions to certain elements of A Study in Pink but even more departures from it. I particularly loved seeing how a difference in circumstances altered what Sherlock got right and wrong in his deductions about John, and how the author created a fascinating backstory to explain the roots of John's psychosomatic limp. With the leads precisely in-character and an interesting canvas of OCs to act as suspects and victims, this fic drew me in and held me rapt from start to finish.

Author's summary:
During Holmes' absence Watson and Lestrade travel to a village on a case.

Reccer's comments:
This is one of my favourite fanworks in Sherlock Holmes fandom, and it is a standout piece among all the fandoms I've participated in, as well as being one of the most sophisticated and successful graphic novels I've had the pleasure to get my hands on. This is a complete graphic novel pastiche that pairs Watson and Lestrade during the Great Hiatus to investigate the disappearance of a young girl from a prominent family. As well as providing us with an intriguing (and tragic) case to follow, the author also weaves in several other story elements, including Mycroft's correspondence with Sherlock, a plotline featuring Sebastian Moran, Watson's continuing grief over the loss of Holmes, and some very satisfying character and relationship development involving Lestrade.

The supporting characters are lively and believable as individuals, each with their own inner lives and motivations. While there aren't many significant female characters in canon to work with, the artist does an admirable job adding in the women in this story, and even creates an original character who I would love to know more about. Exterior and interior shots are meticulously detailed and create a living, atmospheric world for the characters to inhabit, with weather, architecture, period clothing, animal and plant life all given the time and attention needed to paint a portrait of the era and location in the reader's mind. Gentle touches of humour are incorporated into the artwork, and I particularly enjoyed a certain canine character who appears briefly.

I find myself thinking back over this story often, particularly when I'm considering how to improve my own writing skills, and the book stands up very well to re-readings. The artist has generously shared the whole tale online, and it can be enjoyed here: The Silent Girl

Author's summary: In the year 2207, John Watson went to war. (Written in response to the shkinkmeme anon-prompt: SH in Space.)

Reccer's comments: This fic is remarkable for many reasons. It combines economical yet expansive world-building, clever plot twists which impact both the case and the relationship of the characters, a gritty futuristic setting, and a love story which does not run smoothly and is all the better for its frictions and false starts. Its happy ending, once reached, feels earned.

It is also remarkable because it presents a version of these characters which does not fit entirely within any particular established 'verse. The story was completed several months before the BBC series first aired in 2010, and this author independently undertook, not only a modernization of the Doyle characters, but a projection of them into the future. It is fascinating to see the characterization decisions here made, and to meet versions of Holmes and Watson who are in some ways quite similar to what the BBC characters became (in some instances the parallels are astonishing), but who remain in some respects unique, while at other times reminiscent of the Ritchie or Granada versions.

This fic begins as a version of Doyle's "Man with the Twisted Lip," but the case quickly takes on a life of its own. It offers a new version of Holmes and Watson's first meeting, and throughout the story Watson's issues surrounding self-perception, illness, and trust are dealt with in a complex and compelling way. I find this a rich and rewarding read.

It should be noted that the story is a complete and satisfying whole, but although it is listed as being part of a series, the sequel fic was abandoned after only one chapter so you may be happier simply stopping at the end of this story. (The sequel makes quite an interesting epilogue, though it raises important character issues which are never resolved). If you are interested in seeing more of this author's work, and in particular how they engaged with the BBC characters once that series aired, their excellent BBC adaptation of "The Devil's Foot" has already been recc'd on this comm. Authors who can skillfully entwine original mysteries with nuanced relationship and character drama are treasures, and I hope you enjoy finangler's work as much as I have.

Reccer's comments: “Oh,” he breathes. Something in his chest disconnects. Oh.

In the very early morning hours, Mycroft gets a call that his mother has died. He goes to Baker Street to tell Sherlock, only to find him asleep but John still awake and struggling to write up their latest case. While waiting for Sherlock to wake, Mycroft helps John work out the details. This absolutely gorgeous story intersperses Mycroft's memories of his mother between bits of his conversation with John and John's case write-up. The story is brimming with emotion that is tightly repressed until the very end. Mycroft is the main focus here and light is shed not only on his relationship with Sherlock, but also with John. It's beautifully written character study that's cleverly written and it shows us a softer side of all three men.

Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 42825
Rating: Explicit
Warning: Graphic depictions of violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's Summary:
Sherlock and John hunt a serial killer who uses The Nine Circles of Hell as his modus operandi.
This is a alternate universe fusion casefic based on the movie Se7en and Dante Alighieri's Inferno. Any mistakes or misrepresentations regarding these two works are on purpose (probably) and entirely mine.
Reccer's Comments:
Not for the faint of heart.  Even if you'd watched Se7en yesterday, this one will still get to you.  The author builds the tension slowly and painfully.  I just kept thinking 'The tag said neither one dies.'   On the tail of that thought though, I started worrying about the truth of author tags.  Great characterizations and a great AU that tailors the Se7en universe to its needs.  If you've never seen it, most of the movie takes place in an endless downpour and that serves as an excellent backdrop for this story: the brown and grey buildings of a murky, wet London.  Best read with all the lights on.  And a taser.  Just to be safe.

Excerpt:
Sherlock raised his torch, sweeping the light across the room, highlighting the cooktop. Or at least, what they could see of it. Pots and pans covered each burner, crusted food spills covered everything else and continued on to the adjoining countertop and sink. Dirty utensils were strewn haphazardly in between empty food containers. As the beam hit each surface, cockroaches scattered in multiple directions, their soundless escape making the scene all the more surreal.
The beam illuminated similar detritus all over the tiny kitchen, up to and including the small kitchen table in the center and the grotesquely obese man slumped over it.
“John…” Sherlock’s voice trailed off. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest. John stepped up next to him and they brushed shoulders.
“Jesus Christ, Sherlock. Why exactly are we here?”
“Murder, John,” Sherlock breathed.
Almost in sync, they walked up to the dead man, each taking a side and leaning in to study him without touching. The man’s face was not visible, face buried in the batter bowl full of syrupy treacle.
“Sherlock, this guy…he must weigh twenty-five stone…”
“Twenty-seven.”
John continued as if Sherlock hadn’t spoken. “Don’t you suppose there is the possibility that he went into cardiac arrest and he simply…he just keeled over in his pudding?”

Reccer's comments: I’m not doing this wonderful fic any justice at all by giving it a hasty last-minute rec, but I just can’t leave without mentioning it. It’s one of those creative, intense, exceptionally well-written fics that leave me moved and satisfied and generally very happy to be part of this fandom. The author takes, as stated in the summary, two of those notorious “unpublished cases” every author loves to write about, and uses them as anchors to develop a bittersweet love story between Holmes and Watson; it is the same kind of bittersweet that we know so well from their relationship in canon. The style and characterizations are spot-on, Mary Watson is treated with all the respect she deserves, and… well, it’s rated R for a reason. *g*

One of these lists is not John Watson’s. If John Watson were to put what he really wanted in list form, to live in a land somewhere beyond ‘almosts' now that Sherlock Holmes has indeed returned to him, he would never be able to look his flatmate in the eye ever again.

Reccer's comments: Another Post-Reichenbach!first-time fic, complete with Sherlock throttling a mall Santa, and John being long-suffering/BAMFy/deepinlovesomethingwithSherlock. Withoutawish has a really lovely grasp character and a strong sense of voice. She does a beautiful job of Sherlock and John after his return, with their selective silences, and new boundaries - a good mix of angst, humor and a particular brand of crazy that leaves you deeply satisfied. Settle in for a long read.

Reccer's comments: This is a fic where Sherlock regularly sees a male prostitute to release pent up sexual urges and John gets increasingly more jealous. And if the jealousy trope wasn't enough to make me click, the latter 2/3rds of the fic involves a case that neatly ties into the entire situation.

I thought that the characterization in this fic was really well done and I wasn't expecting to like the original characters as much as I did by the end. Between the well-thought out case and the moments of extreme competence (seriously, I fall so hard for authors who actually make their characters earn their badass description rather than assume it), this was a fantastic and easy read with great pacing and action to keep me intrigued all the way through.

Author's summary: Post TGG. Sherlock and John's relationship is new, still in its beginning stages. Sherlock struggles with intimacy because of which is difficult to get close to. Any hope John has of learning from Sherlock's past partners's mistakes is a lost cause due to Sherlock 'deleting' all the information. But just because Sherlock can't remember doesn't mean it's not around somewhere...

Reccer's comments: This is a very hard-hitting series, dealing with some very serious issues in both John and Sherlock's past. The writer incorporates canon references from both the books and the television series but makes it their own by creating a detailed past that effects John and Sherlock's relationship "today" as well as their interactions with other canon and OC characters (Sherlock's drug use and past sexual encounters play a big role). The author also uses actual images of mentioned notebooks, case notes, misc. notes, and pages from mentioned books/articles in the story which is a nice touch.
Each part of the series can be read alone but together they build a very complex and dark but still fun to read story. I read through from the first word till the last last night and I only put it down when my eyes started closing against my will, haha. If you like a darker, angst-ridden casefic, this is definitely one you don't want to pass over.

Reccer's comments:  There is so much to love about this fic.  First and foremost, it is a good solid case fic, with a plot worthy of canon.  Although not particularly graphic, it includes scenes from the victims' POV, which brings an immediacy to the crimes that really draws the reader in. The OCs are wonderfully three dimensional, and Sherlock is at his best and more annoying.  The chapters seem to just fly by.

It is also a great example of a friendship fic between John and Sherlock.  As much as I love sh/jw slash, it is nice to read a fic that shows two people can have an emotional connection without sex.  And that emotional connection is so well written that sex would seem almost superfluous.  Even the most ardent shipper should feel content.

I also love what this fic does for Sally Donovan, who is often one dimensional in fanfic and (IMHO) got the short end of the stick in canon.  This story builds naturally on what we know of her but makes her much more real.  (It was written before Season 2 so somewhat AU because of that).

All in all, a satisfying read.

What I like about this is that I can pretty much see this happening in the series' future, when Sherlock and John are more comfortable and used to each other. Reccer's comments: This is technically a sequel to Pompey's brilliant look at Watson's life in the aftermath of Maiwand but you don't need to read the first story to like this one. (Although it wouldn't hurt.) All you really need to know is that Dr. Ives was the one who saw Watson through the enteric fever and his recovery and still takes an interest in his former patient. The mystery is set after the Great Hiatus, and begins with Holmes acting oddly, setting the Irregulars to watch over Watson, and absorbed in some mystery that he isn't sharing. When Dr. Ives turns up at the door expecting Watson to know more than he does it isn't just the mystery that will need solving -- it's how Watson will take this new evidence of Holmes's lack of trust in him. Pompey writes excellent pastiches -- Watson's voice is right throughout, and the mystery and danger are exciting. A good read.

On the eve of a planned voyage to Brittany, Marjorie Jameson starts her day with no problems more pressing than forcing a boatyard to do an emergency repair to the family yacht. A chance encounter at the Cowes hi-speed ferry terminal begins to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder, with her charming, untrustworthy husband Julian right at the centre and Marjorie as the next intended victim.
But no-one's going to trust the word of an aging housewife whose complaints of abuse the police have previously dismissed as delusions.
Reccer's comments: AJ Hall writes some of the best casefic I've seen in the BBC 'verse, and this story reads like something you'd pay money for. We see the mystery (and Sherlock) mostly from the point of view of Marjorie Jameson, although there is one delicious interchange at Baker Street between John and Sherlock as well. It isn't so much of a "whodunnit?" as it is a "how do you prove it?" but the tension is perfect and even the minor characters are deftly drawn.
