Title: Bel Canto Opera (The Opera of Sherlock Holmes) -- see links below
Author: belcantoopera on tumblr (this is an umbrella tumblr name covering the contributions of a number of individual artists)
Pairing: no pairing in the current music, though the fic which inspired it is Sherlock/John
Rating: not rated, but I would say G
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC, based on bendingsignpost's fic Bel Canto, which was a fusion with Phantom of the Opera
Author's summary: A blog dedicated to writing the opera from bendingsignpost's fanfic Bel Canto.

Reccer's comments: So, a number of musicians read and enjoyed bendingsignpost's wonderful Phantom of the Opera AU Bel Canto (which was recc'd on this comm here). In the story, Sherlock composes the libretto and score of an opera set in ancient Rome which presents the story of Antony and Cleopatra, but instead of focusing on the famous lovers, his opera focused on the ordinary Roman soldiers who found themselves betrayed and ruined when their loyalty to Antony led them to support him even against Rome itself. In the fic, Sherlock drew upon John's military experiences to write a brutally honest, tragically beautiful opera focused on the common man's disillusionment with war, and in the process he accidentally fell in love with his subject. A number of musicians found the fic so inspiring that they set out to...Write. The. Opera.

That's right. They wrote the libretto for key scenes described in the fic (in some cases incorporating lyrics that bendingsignpost had originated), translated it into Italian, composed the music, orchestrated it, and sung it. This is still very much a work in progress, and it has been on hiatus now for more than a year (it's very time-consuming and the artists are focusing on real life at the moment), but they have already created a number of really impressive musical pieces, and the whole project strikes me as something really special that deserves more applause. What an amazing thing to do! I love this fandom.

Here are two of my personal favorite musical pieces from this project:

The Mutiny Theme, originally composed on piano by logicaldisaster, then orchestrated by praeclaruswands with piccolo, flute, oboe, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, timpani, and strings.

Siamo Una Stessa Schiata, an aria/duet (sung in the fic between Sherlock's baritone and Irene's mezzo-soprano), portraying the fatal moment in which the captain persuades the young soldier to give up his dreams of returning home to Rome and accept the call to sacrifice himself for the sake of loyalty to Antony. At this stage the recording is a capella and there are empty spaces which will ultimately be filled by orchestration, but the two singers do a lovely job on their own of conveying the passion and beauty of the music. The baritone part is sung by ijvevhm, the mezzo-soprano by Seteskh. And here is a translation of the Italian lyrics: "“We are of a kind, and so I know you. We are of a kind, our hearts are one. I have dreamt your dreams and lived your life, and I know they both lead to Antony. I know you, we are the same. The loving touch of Lady Rome is a touch you never shall know. Take Duty as your wife, (My heart does not belong to Ceasar) for you are Loyalty (I serve Antonio). And Glory shall be your (my) daughter, Honour your (my) son, and Antony grandfather of both Glory and Honour.”

Anyway, I am really impressed by this project, and if you'd like to explore more of what they've done, you can scroll through their blog at belcantoopera on tumblr.

Title: Flaversham (The Great Mouse Detective Remix)
Music Title & Artist: the background hip-hop beat is unattributed; otherwise the sounds are created using clips from the music and dialog of the film
Vidder: Jesse Dill
Pairing or Character: Basil of Baker Street, Rattigan, Dr. Dawson, the Flavershams
Verse: The Great Mouse Detective (Disney)
Link: I have not found this vidder on LJ, DW, or tumblr, so please note the available link is to YouTube: Flaversham (The Great Mouse Detective Remix) vid

Reccer's Comments: In the world of vids, a "remix" is a special form which takes up the challenge of hearing and creating music within what are traditionally thought of as non-musical sounds (combining snippets - even mismatched syllables - of spoken words or vocal exclamations, and environmental sounds, e.g. a ticking clock). The vidder usually lays in a strong, simple background beat and often also incorporates quick selections of the film's original soundtrack. It's a sort of multimedia hip-hop, and when done well it can be both hilariously fun and irresistibly rhythmic.

This vid is done very well, and it has a lovely array of sounds to work with, especially given the marvelously flexible vocal performances of the film's actors (I love you, Vincent Price & Barrie Ingham!) This is a great tribute to the colorful, charming, heartfelt Disney movie that managed to capture so much of what I love about Sherlock Holmes.

A note: if this is your first remix, I feel I should warn you that it can be a bit repetitive, as the same sequence of images/sounds stands in for repeated verses or choruses in the music. But I think you will find this a very inventive piece which never pauses in the same track for too long. Plus, it's only 2 minutes. I'm hoping that at the end of it, your day will be a little brighter! :)

Title: An Impossible Shape: the Triangular Geometry of Flawed Hearts (Remix of the series Not Your Average Threesome 'Verse: John/Lestrade + Sherlock by thirdbird)
Author: alltoseek
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Greg Lestrade/John Watson
Length: 2,145
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: A triangle with shifting angles, its lines changing length as the energies between its three points waxed and waned… the three lines that made up the triangle, the vectors of energy all flowing down toward one point. One of the lines was weakened; it collapsed; the whole thing fell apart.

Lines, points, vectors and graphs… pages of notes with rough geometrical designs sketched out, notated in neat, minute handwriting… sketches and equations… numbers and angles and degrees, isosceles and scalene, sine and cosine and tangent… J=90, S=190, G=150. “It’s soothing to put it in those terms… it was at first. Until all the angles started going wrong. Now it’s nothing but a nightmare and a headache. It doesn’t work,” Sherlock said. “It’s an impossible shape.”

Reccer's comments: This is something a little unusual—a piece of found poetry. It’s literally a remix: phrases from the original stories have been taken out and then slotted together again to make something new and rather splendid. The poem is a sestina (I must admit this went right over my head initially) and I suppose it's also a kind of concrete poem. The piece is presented as a graphic image (the text is also posted separately after it), and there’s more to the poem than just the verses. Extra little lines are tucked in between. There are equations that act as comments on the verses; names are circled and lines come out from them to connect verses together. It all suggests Sherlock’s thought processes. I find the structure of the poem very satisfying—it’s like standing in the middle of a poem.

The poet says the piece will much more sense if you’re familiar with the series that’s been remixed, and that’s probably true. But when I first read the poem, I wasn’t terribly familiar with the stories—I’d read a couple of them but certainly couldn’t remember them in detail. I think the poem works as a moving piece of art even if you haven’t read the stories yet. This is an intelligent piece that also contains a lot of heart.

Title: Military Intelligence (Remix of For Queen and Country by Persiflager)
Author: innie_darling
Pairing: John Watson/Mycroft Holmes, John Watson/Sebastian Moran
Length: 3,152
Rating: Mature
Warnings: NA
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The only fly in his ointment was that John remained John, though a more closed-off, careful version; Watson lived nowhere but in his imagination.

Reccer's comments: I'm going to admit up front that I'm a sucker for John being a badass and capable. The original fic by Persiflager was right up my alley in that respect, and the remix is just as wonderful but in a different way. The most fascinating (and rewarding) spin on the original is an insight into the fantasy life of Mycroft Holmes. This is one of the main draws of this fic. Mycroft was present for, but not the focus of, the original; here, he takes front stage and what's truly outstanding is how he manages to simultaneously be a stand-in for the audience when it comes to the BAMF!John trope and yet completely write off and underestimate John Watson as a whole. He builds up this imaginary Watson character throughout--something more Jason Bourne than James Bond, but obviously influenced by Mycroft's rampant military kink, possible overexposure to spy novels, and the boredom of his everyday life--which is so obviously a caricature that Mycroft feels comfortable overlooking the real man the fantasy is based on.

The denouement--where John overwhelmingly upends the Holmes brothers expectations of him--is beautifully done, especially when Mycroft is so stunned that he isn't even sure what to call the man--John - no, Watson; no, some unholy hybrid of the two. The fact that the whole episode substantially affects Mycroft's perception of John--and yet Sherlock does not undergo a similar revelation--is yet another wonderful element, feeling entirely in character as both brothers are presented in the fics and in the series.

There are some other, rather wonderful, features of this story: John's awful puns, used to great effect in Persiflager's story, are continued here and are giggle- and groan-inducing in equal measure; the last scene between Moran and Mycroft is just dripping with promise and drops a few nuggets that make me wish there was more fic to explore them, and lastly (but not least) is the constant juxtaposition between John and Watson and how Mycroft has no one to blame but himself for being wrong. Despite his observations of John, and his admission that he finds the man fascinating, he completely misses the mark and it's beautiful to behold. This is an absolutely wonderful, fun, funny fic that fits really well with Persiflager's story and yet explores brand new territory--everything a remix ought to do.

Title: ...Could Fill a Book
Author: faviconPlaidAdder
Pairing: Holmes/Watson, past Watson/Morstan
Length: 16,532 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: ACD Books
Author's summary: When Holmes discovers that his solution to the "Speckled Band" case was...uh...totally wrong, he drags Watson back to Stoke Moran to try to find out what really happened. The true story of the horrible death of Julia Stoner turns out to be closely connected to Mary Morstan's death. As Watson finds himself reliving some of the most painful memories from his marriage to Mary, he starts to take more and more of a leading role in finding the solution to the mystery.

Reccer's comments: PlaidAdder is an author who's been around for a while in ACD fandom, but only recently moved their H/W slash fics to AO3, making them more accessible. I would encourage everyone to check out their author page, but this is my favourite of the lot. Here, PlaidAdder takes on the famous problem of the fact that there is no such thing as a swamp adder, and re-visits SPEC (The Speckled Band) for a much more satisfying and ingenious solution.

There are two things I particularly liked about this story. The first is that Watson really comes into his own, not only using and applying his medical knowledge and military experience, but bringing Holmes to some of Watson's own contacts from his past who can shed light on the case. In effect, he takes over the lead in the investigation. And far from being put out over it, Holmes is enthralled:

We sat silent, looking at each other in the uncertain light of the lantern.

"Holmes," I said, "you have hit upon the answer, I am sure of it."

"No, Watson," he answered. "You have hit upon the answer. You are the one who solved this mystery."

I did not know how to answer that. I did not even know for sure what I felt.

"Watson," he said, "I have known you for a long time, in many strange situations. You are handsome when you are courageous; you are charming when you are loyal; and you are endearing even when you are dense. But when you are brilliant, Watson, you are absolutely breathtaking."

At the same time, he and Holmes both must deal with the fate of Watson's late wife, not only the fact of her and Watson's married life together, but also the fact and cause of her death.

The second thing that made this story stand out for me is the way that the author brings in connections to other ACD stories and characters. (Does something strike you about the name of the estate Stoke Moran?) In hindsight, events that seemed commonplace in their tragedy take on much more sinister overtones in the light of what is revealed in the course of this follow-up investigation.

Title: Room Eight
Author: roane
Pairing: Greg Lestrade/John Watson
Length: 2,830
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Back in London after years of war, John Watson runs into someone from his past he never expected to see again. After fifteen years, neither of them is who they once were, but more surprising to John is what hasn’t changed.

Reccer's comments: This is not a pairing I would’ve thought would work, but roane does a great job of making it believable. Plus this story is a nice character study of John and Greg – both present day and when they were younger men. In less than 3,000 words, this story packs a lot of feelings plus some extremely hot imagery. Enjoy!

Plus a bonus! As the author pointed out in the comments, this is a remix of musamihi's excellent Full Circle So two recs for the price of one!

Title: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blow-Job (Remix of Object of Focus by [archiveofourown.org profile] Jain)
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] unovis
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Greg Lestrade
Length: 2687 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: It's a remix. Thirteen different ways, as it says, structure and title borrowed from "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," by Wallace Stevens. One part in particular borrows directly from that poem.
Interesting vignettes on their own, but the different approaches make more sense if you read the story it's based on.

Reccer's comments: I'm fairly sure it's not bad form to rec a mod's work? This gorgeous piece of writing covers so much ground in so few words. It's witty, wise, elegaic, colloquial, funny, and so perfectly structured the thought behind the words is breathtaking. I loved this when it was written and I still love it now.

Title: Triplicate (The Emily Dickinson Lives Forever Remix)
Author: jibrailis
Pairing: Gen.
Length: 1036 words
Rating: T+
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Three times John Watson stops death.

Reccer's comments: A short piece, but told very well through snapshots of John's life. A bit of magical realism, and a bit of John's history, and a bit of John dealing with life post-Reichenbach; and you have a lovely, understated little one-shot.

Excerpt: His uncle with the gaunt face and the yellowed fingernails, beckoning him under the rowan tree.

Years later, when John asked, his mother would look at him blankly and say, "I don't have a brother. Are you sure you're feeling all right, dear?" He would then have to dodge her hand as it came out to feel his forehead for fever, for signs of delirium.

But he remembers: his uncle's slanted smile underneath that tree, and leaning in close, his whisper like the crackling of burning paper: "Happy birthday, John my boy. Three gifts. Three times. Three moments you'll be able to stop death."

"I'd rather have a new bike," John said honestly.

Title: Never Look Back
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 5600 words
Rating: R
Warnings: extreme violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC crossover with H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu universe
Author's summary: "Thus always to tyrants, then?" John says, inspecting the polished metal. Just yesterday, it had been smeared with blood and entrails, dripping a putrid, ugly green onto the floor. "I like it."
Reccer's comments: This is a companion story to A Study in Emerald set in the Sherlock BBC verse and told from a slightly different P.O.V. than Neil Gaiman's story. It's dark and violent and beautiful and worth checking out if you like your Sherlock and John with lots of sharp, shiny edges. Also worth checking out: thedeadparrot's amazing Full Metal Alchemist crossover.

Title: a wise man’s hell
Author: Sarah T
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 1200
Rating: R
Warnings: Drug use
Verse: Ritchie films
Author's summary: This is not where they need to go.
Reccer's comments: a wise man's hell is a lovingly crafted and styled remix of The Milk of Paradise by [livejournal.com profile] mific, both of which detail Holmes's visit to an opium den. The remixer does a splendid job infusing the kind of unresolved relationship tension that I love in my Holmes/Watson, in an entirely in-character and canon-appropriate way. I also love the way Holmes's opium-fogged thought process is rendered.

The story from which this one is remixed has more explicit Holmes/Watson, while this remix is a sparser take that is no less capable of burrowing into your heart.

Title: The Effects of Proximity: The Sleight of Hand Remix
Author: autoschediastic on AO3, or blue-soaring on Dreamwidth.
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 1400
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: none
Verse: Ritchie Films
Author's summary: His permission to take such liberties has been granted a hundred thousand times over, what Watson believes his body is saying should not contradict it. A remix of The Effects of Proximity by LadyLoveLace (at [livejournal.com profile] lace_fic)
Reccer's comments: This little gem is the most satisfying and practical exploration of an asexual Holmes that I’ve ever read. The writing style is so vivid that you can almost smell the boarding room in which they’re passing the evening. The encounter itself is deliciously hot, but even better is the character development, as Holmes and Watson dance around their wants and feelings in grand Victorian fashion.

Also, if you enjoy this style (and smoking hot sex scenes), I recommend you check out Autoscheidiastic's other Holmes/Watson fic, all available on AO3.

Read it on AO3 or on Dreamwidth.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
