Title: The Men Who Talked Between the Words
Author: Odamaki
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade, brief John Watson/Mary Morstan, Harry Watson/OFC, James Sholto/OMC, Billy Wiggins/OFC
Length: @460,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: past abuse (including implied/referenced child abuse), implied/referenced suicide (not of any character from the TV show), implied/referenced drug use
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John expected to be a father some day; he expected to have the house, and the wife and the nice suburban job. Sherlock never expected to have children, in part because he never expected to make it past 30. As it turns out, you don't get a choice. Crammed into Baker Street with a baby, John struggles with single-parenthood and his own fears, while Sherlock treads the fine line between doing too little and saying too much.

Reccer's comments: It's hard to think of what I can say about this fic that hasn't already been said. Four years in the making, of a length comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this story took extraordinary commitment to create and the end result is simply astonishing. I've been reading Holmesian fiction for quite a long time, and I've never run across another story that felt quite like this one. There's something so authentic and keenly observed about the details. There's a realism here that reaches out and never lets me go. The characters - both the main and the secondary ones - have such distinct voices, and their lives and relationships are deeply grounded and believable.

This is a realistic parentlock fic, and it's the deliciously slowest of slow-burn romances, and that heart of the story is beautiful. But that's really not all there is to it. Odamaki doesn't allow Sherlock, John, and the baby to live in a bubble. The story is full to bursting with the many other people who know them, who affect and are affected by them. Both Sherlock and John have important inward work to do before either is ready to think about romance. It's a story about growth, about healing, about hard-fought and hard-won maturity. About friendships and familiar places that won't stay neatly unchanged, and about painful habits and histories that won't fade away without long and deliberate effort.

When I think of this fic, the love story and the family Sherlock and John make together stands at the center. But I also think of Sherlock and Molly's quiet happiness working on her research together at Barts; James Sholto walking John through his fledgling orchard; Billy playing chess in hospital; Harry lounging with her girlfriend on the couch; Greg's tiepin; the moms in John's playgroup; the voice at the other end of a helpline.

This is a compelling fic about love and family, but it's also about all those other nooks and crannies of life that too often get left out of love stories. There's a village of vivid people wrapped up in this story, and I love them all.

(Also, I should add: 1) the story is complete. It ends at chapter 27. There are still new chapters going up, but they are 'bonus material' like deleted scenes and FAQ responses from the author. 2) The story goes AU after series 3, and incorporates no elements of series 4. The baby is a girl, but she is not the canonical 'Rosie' of the TV show).

Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 23,000 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Watch Sherlock, John and Rosie over the years as they celebrate the season as only they can.

Reccer's comments: This charming series of ficlets was written for a 31-day December challenge, using specific prompts for each chapter. The ficlets do make up an entire story, but it is not a linear telling. It jumps back and forth through time, but there is a common thread throughout: how Sherlock, John and Rosie spend and celebrate Christmas together as they work towards forming a family unit. Some chapters take place before John and Sherlock are a couple, and some take place during their established relationship. No matter; it works in a delightful way.

Mary does appear in a couple of chapters, but only as a ghost and a memory.

Yes, I know it's almost May, but that doesn't mean we all don't need some festive cheer to get us through our days, now more than ever!

Title: Restoration
Author: Chryse
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/OMCs
Length: 50,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: “It won’t ever be the same as it was.”
“Of course it won’t be the same. But it might be even better.”

Reccer's comments: This is a fantastic Series 4 fix-it. Anyone who is familiar with Chryse knows to expect quality storytelling and emotional resonance. This is no exception.

The story picks up right after the events of Sherrinford, but before the ending montage. Sherlock, of course, has just lost his home and has learned that his childhood memories are false. On top of struggling to deal with all of his recent (and decades-long) losses, Sherlock also finds himself adrift and unmoored from his sense of self. He no longer knows what is true or false, or what he can trust to be real. So he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. After going through painful therapy to recover lost memories, he then begins the process of letting go of the past and finding a way forward. And he does this by going on a global walkabout.

He doesn't stay away for long, but he makes good use of his time. Discovering who he is, what he likes, and what he wants, including an awareness and exploration of his nascent sexuality. A delightful OC is introduced who helps him on this quest, and who asks for help of a different nature in return.

And never fear. John is a stalwart and supportive presence throughout. He isn't always physically present (he doesn't accompany Sherlock on his walkabout), but he's always on the edge of Sherlock's awareness, and ours. This is the John that comes through for Sherlock in the end, because he never really left. So be aware that, even though the pairing tag includes Sherlock with several OC's, it's only in the service of letting Sherlock find his way - and that way is back to John.

Title: A Gift for Rosie
Author: redbuttonhole
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Eurus Holmes, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mummy Holmes/Uncle Rudy
Length: 3,652

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author Summary: Mycroft, by the way, advised me not to tell you anything of this affair beyond the bare minimum. He seems to think you'll react badly, and I can't help but grant that he is probably correct... But you're family now, John. It's time you learned exactly what that means.

Content Warning: Infidelity, Incest (off-stage, between consenting adult siblings. Not involving Rosie!)

Reccer's comments: Eurus Holmes is a divisive character for sure - but she presents a lot of great opportunities for fic writers. And as soon as we saw Musgrave Hall in all its Gothic glory, stories that play on Gothic literature tropes started to seem natural - even in the supernatural or unnatural.

(This story also fills in some major gaps in various characters' motivations from the series, IMO.)

This is an epistolary fic, Sherlock writing a letter to his partner John, letting him in on all the family secrets - as so often in Gothic lit, that family secret happens to be a history of incest: consensual incest between adult siblings, often with the intention of producing a super-super genius instead of just a regular run-of-the-mill genius. Eurus is the product of such a union.

The letter proceeds with such straightforward, elegantly written logic and subtle appeals to emotion that the slowly dawning horrific conclusion the reader is coming to about Sherlock’s special project almost seems perfectly fine. Sherlock’s matter-of-fact emotional honesty is touching and kept me so riveted I welcomed the slow derailment of reason.

And the denouement reminded me of a certain pivotal, shattering line of dialogue from the climax of Watchmen.

Title: Albion and the Woodsman
Author: Glenmore
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 54,437 words
Rating: Not Rated (I would rate it Mature)
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Post Series 3. Sherlock and John are devastated after Mary Morstan makes her final moves. Sherlock relapses at the crack house, John walks around the world ...and a lot happens in between. Parentlock, in the good way.

Reccer's comments: If you are the type of reader who, like me, generally avoids first-person storytelling, then do yourself a favor and make an exception for this one. It's one of those rare fics that successfully paints Sherlock Holmes as a devoted single parent. The story is in turns funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.

It is told from Sherlock's POV, and begins post-series 3. It starts out after Sherlock has been shot for a second time by Mary Watson, an event that leads to her arrest and to John needing to disappear for awhile in order to get his head together. He leaves for a year-long walkabout around the world, leaving Sherlock devastated and returning to drugs. Of course he cleans himself up, only to be confronted several months later by a pregnant stranger claiming that Sherlock is the father.

We get to watch Sherlock fall immediately in love with his son Albion, and then take to single fatherhood like a duck takes to water. As Sherlock grows into his new role, he continues to pine for John and wait for his eventual return. The way Sherlock refers to John in his absence by different epithets such as 'eleven jumpers Watson' and 'Three pairs of brogues Watson' kept me delighted and laughing throughout.

We are introduced to several OC’s, not the least of which is Albion himself. His nanny gives soldier!John a run for his money (once he returns), and even the mother who abandoned him manages to turn her life around and gain at least a smidgen of our respect.

There are struggles and lessons to be learned, not the least of which that 'happily ever after' does not mean what all the fairy-tales claim. Reality is much more complicated, but all the more rewarding because of it.

Title: Hallowe'en Homecoming

Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 12,594
Rating: Teen
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock and John are solving a case when Mycroft turns up and persuades Sherlock to return home for his mother's Hallowe'en celebration. John thinks that seeing where Sherlock grew up will help him understand the detective better; instead, he finds himself more confused than ever. But it's John Watson's job to look after Sherlock Holmes, come hell, high water, or Hallowe'en, so that's just what he's going to do.

Reccer's comments: Sherlock looks at him bleakly. After a moment, it sinks in.

“Oh my god,” John breathes. Because of course, of course the most devastating memory for Sherlock Holmes would be one in which he felt happy. Happy, and normal, and loved.

“Was that…the last time it was like that?” he asks, heart in his mouth.

Sherlock’s eyes widen. He nods.

John lets out a long breath. That’s it. That’s the secret. The truth about the detective, the riddle he thought he’d never crack.

Sherlock Holmes had a happy childhood.

I was debating what to post for my final rec this month; after seeing [livejournal.com profile] snarryfool's excellent, unsettling rec of earlier today (which is really REALLY good, so please read it!), I decided on this cozy, comforting story. It's a quite different peek at the Holmes family and their relationships with each other, one that John comes to discover quite by accident. Or is it?

This was written pre-S3 and so is not remotely canon. Sherlock and John and Mycroft are all still themselves, but maybe just a bit more revealing than we're used to seeing. While there is a brief reference to Irene Adler and the events of ASiB, there is no mention of the Fall at all, so this story either happens well before that or this is a world in which the Fall never takes place. There is a little bit of everything here- an intriguing case, angst, humor, bickering Holmes brothers, a warm and inviting Mummy Holmes, a steady John Watson, hot apple cider, Halloween decorations, and trick-or-treating. Most of all, there is lots of love, in the obvious places and (not so really) surprising ones.

Author's summary: Mycroft Holmes, age fourteen, finds his way.

Reccer's comments: I'm a sucker for stories about the Holmes brothers. I love fics that dive deeper into their relationship and poke around in the corners to see what bites. And oh, this story does bite. Teenage Mycroft, away at boarding school, is the primary focus. He is lonely, he is in pain, but he is determined not to let that break him. We get a hint here of some of the forces that drove and shaped him into the Mycroft we see in the show. Mycroft is the star of this story, but the other Holmes brothers feature as well. Sherlock makes a heartrending appearance, while the Other One's presence is more ominous. Written post-S3, this is one of the many interpretations of the Holmes' family dynamics, but it's one of the best ones out there. We don't leave the story knowing all the answers, but like Sherlock, we can find comfort in Mycroft's inner strength.

Completed.

Reccer's comments: I feel very lucky to get the chance to rec this month, as I have been reading so much wonderful fic thanks to all the holiday fests and challenges recently. This anthology by Odamaki was one of my favorite stories to follow this December -- I was stunned by the richness, poignancy, and variety of these vignettes.

Every chapter was rewarding, and I was especially touched to read about Lestrade struggling to find a way to reconnect with his adolescent daughter; James Sholto approaching Christmas with a determination to surpass the limits placed on him by physical disability and emotional isolation; and an absolutely breath-taking magical realism AU, running across multiple chapters, which followed Sherlock and John through an intricate, absorbing and unique rendition of the Nutcracker fairytale.

I hope you enjoy this lovely collection as much as I did, and if you like, the author has devoted the final chapter to providing easy navigation links identifying the pairing and main characters of each chapter and also marking the magical realism chapters so that you can easily seek out or avoid whichever vignettes suit your taste. A beautiful wintery gift to the fandom from a very talented author.

It follows Sherlock through five phases of scientific experimentation during five different phases of his life, and concludes with Sherlock and John being happily retired in Sussex where they continue to experiment together. Title: RFU (series)
Author: okbutjusthisonce (AO3) / consulting-homos (tumblr)
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ~500-7000
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: “Are you pregnant again?” Sherlock says, eyeing John suspiciously.

Reccer's comments:

RFU is, to the best of my understanding, a series of responses to tumblr fic prompts going back to 2013. I don't remember who turned me on to them, but I remember thinking the stories were kind of awful; fifteen fics later I realized that they're awful like cheetos. They're quick junk food perfectly tailored to a specific craving (extreme/multiple pregnancy kink, with some animalistic/jealous Sherlock, which John cheerfully encourages).

As omegaverse goes, this series doesn't take itself or its kinks - or punctuation - too seriously. It's the kind of pleasantly bonkers porny romp you might hope to find in a members-only forum, but focused more on relationship dynamics than on the actual sex. Just enough of that to get the job done, and each story has its own humorous twist.

I particularly liked "Wayward," a recent entry, where a very, very pregnant John is out and about, coyly riling up the populace for his own purposes.

"Look at that." Kate said. She tilted her chin in the general direction of the next table, although it was completely unnecessary. Sarah nodded, almost imperceptibly at the omega sitting not far away.

Veronica reached for the sugar.

"Poor thing.” she tsked. She stifled a scandalised smile. “That can’t be comfortable.”

Sarah picked up the pot.

"Some people," she said in a low voice, "have little control over their bodies." She poured her friends a bit more tea, then replenished her own cup.

“It isn't as though it’s the 1950's, though, you know? We had sex education at school.” Kate stirred her tea thoughtfully.

“Well, some feel the need for attention.” Sarah said dismissively.

“You think that’s intentional, then?” Veronica stopped spoon poised halfway from her cup in a gesture of fascinated horror, "He can barely sit up."

“I bet…” Kate’s expression had taken on a mischievous edge, “fertility drugs were involved.”

Sometimes people get invoved in the shenanigans for hormonal reasons rather than because they have soberly considered their desires and the ramifiations thereof, and also John involves outside parties at least once in a sex game, unawares, so: dubious consent.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Ireland, 1920. There's a war on, but no one seems to be playing by the rules. John Watson, injured and unemployed after his time at the Front, joins up with the special forces sent over to keep the peace, but when he meets Sherlock Holmes, the second son of the local lord, he begins to lose track of which side he is on.

Reccer's comments: True history AUs are rare indeed in any fandom, primarily because it takes so much research and practice to richly communicate a complex foreign culture and tell a good fictional story. Most history AUs require years of research to get to the point where the author can adroitly share the cultural and social realities of the peoples living in the past. Therefore, it's no surprise that most authors find it already challenge enough to skillfully create a genre AU like a Western. It's frankly a miracle that this fandom has been blessed with more than one history AU, let alone more than one that is as beautifully wrought as this one.

That lbmisscharlie loves 20th-century Irish and British history is made abundantly clear from the first chapter. John Watson, soldier of King and Country, is not patrolling Afghanistan, but another restive part of the British Empire, Ireland, just as England's grip is slipping. Although BBC!John never has reservations about his deployment to Afghanistan or what he did there, the John of this story will grow to question what he does in Ireland. Without slipping into overt preachiness, the author makes vivid the cultural clashes and how the characters choose to navigate them. Both sides commit atrocities, leaving one wondering who really is in the right.

John and the other canonical characters like Sherlock and Molly are deftly smoothed into their AU roles. For the most part, the political, social, and cultural beliefs and values they express and act on as English and Irish of the 1920s are blended skillfully with the traits of the BBC characters. Alterations to characters are made purposefully. For example, John is a not an officer or doctor in this fic, something that allows the author to play with class differences in England and in Ireland. Him not being a doctor is, more than once, subtly presented as a lack; something John could be, but never had the opportunity given his social class (several rungs below ACD's Watson for sure and maybe below BBC!John as well).

Of the many OCs, Eva stands out. Both Eva and Molly demonstrate the challenges of women living in Ireland during the troubles of the 1920s. They might support Irish independence, but the violence is personally painful, compelling them to look or hope for alternatives to the high costs of war. These women might risk themselves for Sherlock at different moments of the plot, but it is clear they have lives and concerns outside of Sherlock's Work.

Apart from the layered portrayals of major and minor characters, there is the vibrant sense of place throughout. From the bloody fields of the Continent near the end of WWI, to London and many locations in Ireland (primarily in and around Macroom), the scenery is beautifully rendered, often amplifying the mood of a particular scene. One of many examples is a cinematic rendering of the interior of the Honan Chapel on the grounds of University College in Cork, a setting that conveys the menace and mystery of what is facing John, before suddenly inspiring a brief moment of wonder and nostalgia:

Scrubbing his hands through his hair, John looks around the small chapel once more. The weak candlelight barely penetrates the dark corners, its flickering light producing strange, monstrous shadows in the lurking depths. Bracing one hand on the pew, John hauls himself to his feet and makes his way to the wall. Thrusting the taper in front of him, he traces the walls with his hand as he surveys the perimeter, noting anything that could be used as a weapon: this heavy candelabra, that bible stand, the blunt granite edge of the font. The altar is bare but for an embroidered altar cloth; underneath is empty.

From the altar, John walks down the steps back into the nave, testing the stability of the pews as he passes down the centre aisle. Dead ahead, St Patrick in his emerald robes offers a benediction, while down each side of the nave saints less familiar pass judgement. Pausing in the middle of the aisle, his eye is captured by a brilliant column of blue, its deep tones blending to amethyst in the fading light, which leads to an imperious face with a sharp, beaked nose. But for the long mass of crimson curls, the face, with the haughty set of its eyes and the thrusting, stubborn chin, could be familiar. Some forgotten ancestor of Sherlock’s, perhaps? Amused, John steps closer, craning his neck to examine the details, when his eye focuses and he frowns.

Surrounding the figure, at feet and head, are sparkling, crimson bees, their wingspan the breadth of a man’s spread palm. In one hand, the figure holds a miniature of the chapel, formed from golden beeswax, and John is startlingly thrown back to the summer. To Sherlock’s outstretched thumb, coated in honey, to his caring hands on the hives. John’s laugh, when it breaks the silence, is hoarse, peculiar and cracked. Beekeepers, watching him.

I could go on and on about the many virtues of this lovingly crafted fic, but I urge you to see for yourself!

Greg, who knew about John's previous life as an alley cat, petted round John's left ear exactly once, and John showed his appreciation for the affection by not clawing Greg's fingers off.

Reccer's comments: First off - Sherlock is a greyhound and John is a cat. Now, that that’s out of the way, this fic is brilliant. Even if this kind of AU is not your cup of tea, do give this one a try. There’s a wonderful camaraderie between canine!Sherlock and feline!John that is remarkably close to the one on the screen. Lestrade is the perfect pet owner and this fic manages to incorporate all the wonderful moments that having a pet involves as well as the hard and difficult moments.

Molly appears and is wonderfully practical and just delightful. Moriarty even turns up and he still manages to be extremely menacing. I do want to mention that there is some violence towards animals, but it isn’t terribly graphic. Feel free to pm me if you’d like spoilers.

In short, this story is extremely well-written and despite the AU manages to stay incredibly in-character. I found myself remembering sections throughout the week.

Author's summary: In His Last Vow that final scene appearance from You Know Who could have been a coincidence. But the world is rarely so lazy.

Reccer's comments: AJHall is a prolific writer and I love all of her stories, not last because they're so clever and carefully put together that it usually takes me several re-reads to become aware of and comprehend all that's going on in them. In this delightful little His Last Vow fic, she explains in an incredibly witty, entertaining and imaginative way how Sherlock got off that fatal airplane. And because AJHall is the forefront writer of "Women being awesome", of course it's the women of Sherlock who save him.

In five marvellous miniatures, we get to meet Lady Smallwood, Mummy, Irene Adler and Janine, all of whom play their parts in Sherlock's rescue. And play them brilliantly. It's wonderful how they're all introduced in just a couple of seemingly random sentences, which manage to truly grasp the essence of their character. To top it all off, there are all kinds of ingenious little references, both to popculture and to the canon of the first two Sherlock seasons.

This truly is a showcase for the women in Sherlock. But it's also more than that - it's a showcase for absolutely excellent writing. If Season 4 went with this fabulous explanation for Moriarty's appearance at the end of His Last Vow and told it in a similarly stellar fashion, I would be beyond happy.

Reccer's comments: Sherlock and John love their work; sharing the adventure and joy of work is always a central part of their relationship, and I'm always especially interested to see that dynamic translated and made new by giving them a different profession. This story completely immerses us in the world of professional musical performance, and it's almost like watching Sherlock and John speaking a different language. I love the thoroughness of this AU setting, and the way that John and Sherlock's instantly recognizable personalities shine through in their new setting. They are just so competent. I love it. And they work so well together, and they 'get' each other, and Sherlock is a diva and John is very, very good at handling divas.

I love learning something new and seeing a career and lifestyle I would otherwise never have known anything about. The author holds a degree in piano performance, and their knowledge and experience shines through without ever bogging down the narrative. For realism, dedication to detail, and spot-on characterization, this story is hard to beat. Plus, it's just fun :)

Each chapter is dedicated to a 'first' in a certain character's life. The first two chapters deal with John and Sherlock in childhood, and their respective ways of dealing with the loss of a father. The story continues on chronologically up through Reichenbach and beyond, through John's marriage to Mary, until Sherlock and John are finally connected in the most complete way possible. The firsts that the author chooses are major milestones in our beloved characters' lives, and shape their way going forward. John watched the muscles in Sherlock’s jaw jump. He nodded in one sharp jerk.

“Then we’re going to her party and making her happy.” John let out a resigned sigh. “As a ruddy couple, you bastard.”

Reccer's comments: No S3 Spoilers
What_Alchemy does many things I love in this fic. There's dialogue so IC (its rhythm, the vocabulary choices for the different characters, and syntax) that I can easily hear the entire thing spoken by the actors. Character interaction that is true to the dynamics we've seen in S1 and S2. The setting (Outer Hebrides Islands) is vividly described and provides new situations that in turn spark a range of reactions, including character insights and growth. Don't think that the scenery is window-dressing; by the final chapter the islands' interaction with the characters give the evolving relationships their proper weight.

Mummy is a wonder: by turns warm and melancholic, she is brilliant, flirtatious, and iconoclastic. One can clearly see how different traits of hers were passed on to Sherlock and Mycroft. I adore that she has a family on her own terms, not needing the conventional script that so often is positioned as the ideal choice in Western society. The family dynamics are both amazing and realistic; it's clear Mummy and her sons all love each other deeply, but over time sibling love and admiration deformed into carping and jealousy. John shakes things up, but he too is capable of hurting loved ones. Finally, I admire the joy that runs underneath the sharpest moments of sorrow and anger; never do you doubt the characters' love for each other, or that goodness can be found in each.

Excerpt: The Bridge to Nowhere was not far at all from Caisteal a’ Mhorair. And sure enough, it was just a concrete bridge nestled in some flora. It was on a headland that overlooked the coastal sands down below. There was a plaque declaring it the only relic of Lord Leverhulme’s failed route from Tolsta Village to Ness. Down on the beach were some other people, caravanning. John could see them cracking cans of beer, reclining in beach chairs. Their voices and merriment carried all the way up to the Bridge to Nowhere. Mycroft sneered at the display, and John could tell Sherlock wished to do so as well but also wished never to be seen agreeing with his brother. John wondered if his face would break with the strain of it.

Mummy chided them. “Don’t be so elitist,” she said. “It takes all kinds, you know that. Where do you think I got you lot?”

Mycroft and Sherlock had never looked so much alike as when they were gaping at their mother in abject horror. John took a picture and wondered how much it would cost to get it blown up and framed for over the mantle. Perhaps he’d have a copy made for New Scotland Yard.

“Mummy…” Mycroft lowered his voice. “You told me my father was an MP.”

“And he worked very hard to earn his position.” Mummy’s eyes went soft and dreamy and just a touch filthy. “And in the garden. And on the grounds. And in my—”

“Yes, Mummy, thank you,” Sherlock said, mouth pinched into a moue of distaste.

“Please tell me Sherlock’s father was a travelling circus performer,” Mycroft said.

“Of course he was, dear,” Mummy said.

“Don’t patronise me, Mother,” Mycroft grumbled.

“I’m going to follow this path,” John said in a raised voice. He had crossed the bridge, and beyond it there was a worn footpath that led around the summit. He was not three strides in before Sherlock matched his pace. He could hear Mycroft and Mummy following along behind them, speaking in low murmurs. Sherlock and John trudged along in companionable silence, their hands occasionally brushing. The path was narrow, and before them unspooled nothing but vast waters. The endless blue of the ocean made John feel free, almost as if it would take nothing to rise into the sky and head towards the horizon. His hand brushed Sherlock’s again, and he wondered if he were really Peter in this scenario or if he were Wendy dragged along for the ride. There was something perpetually childlike in Sherlock, after all — and sometimes that wasn’t even an insult. On good days, he approached the world with a wonder John envied. And if anyone could defy the laws of physics and take to the sky, it would be Sherlock Holmes. He’d done it once before, after all.

“Don’t go brooding on me, John,” Sherlock said. The interruption broke John’s reverie and he glanced over. Sherlock was staring resolutely ahead, brows furrowed, mouth drawn downwards.

“What are you—”

“And don’t lie. It is not among your considerable skills.”

John’s mouth snapped shut, but Sherlock kept going.

“When you think about my… absence, your shoulders hunch by three degrees, your breathing becomes shallower, and you clench your left hand as well as your jaw. You might as well be broadcasting on BBC 1.”

John reflexively clenched his jaw. “Well, I can’t help it, and you don’t actually get to dictate my emotions or my expressions of them. I’m not having this row with you right now. We’ve had a lovely day, can you leave it there?”

John took Sherlock’s silence as acquiescence. They walked further, the white of the sand below stark against vivid blues and greens. The world looked like a painting. The world looked as if John could reach out and smear the oils, make it his own. He felt Sherlock’s hand nudge hesitantly against his, the spindly fingers unpracticed and fumbling.

John tangled their hands together and held on.

Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes is a pitcher and John Watson is a catcher. No, no, no, it's a baseball AU.

Reccer's comments: Right off the bat (pun not intended) I want to point out that you don't need to know anything about baseball, or even have an interest in it, for you to be swept away by this fic. The story, at its heart and soul, is all about the progression of the relationship between Sherlock and John, which is done at a very satisfying and realistic pace. Having said that, if you are a baseball fan like me, you will find that aspect of the story satisfying as well.

The first chapter (prologue, really) is an introduction to the rules and terms of the sport, but you can easily skip past that to the story proper without missing anything of importance. This is one of my favourite authors, and I was waiting patiently (?) for it to be completed before I started it. When I did, I devoured it within a very short span of time. I would easily put it within my top 10 Sherlock fics.

Family dynamics play a major role in this story as well, for both Sherlock and John. The author even gives Harry and Clara a family of their own, and she does a beautiful job of portraying their relationship in a way that doesn't place all the blame for their problems on just one person. Even the unsympathetic portrayal of Sherlock's family isn't done just for the sake of adding unnecessary conflict, but serves the purpose of explaining why Sherlock acts the way he does in his interactions with other people.

Almost everyone from canon appears in this, and the author does a fantastic job of putting them exactly where they would fit the best in this universe. Greg Lestrade is the team's manager, Mrs Hudson is the team's owner (and also, incidently, the owner of the house that contains Sherlock's apartment), Molly is the team doctor... even Donovan and Anderson make appearances. Moriarty is also here, of course... who is ultimately revealed to be a much more sinister figure than just a rival pitcher who is the bane of Sherlock's existence.

Set aside a few hours for this epic romance.... I guarantee it will be well worth your time.
