Title: Curse of the Were-Tuna
Author: WhoGroovesOn
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 46,916
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John couldn’t help but feel as though the large tuna beyond the glass was staring at him, which was weird because it’s not like fish had eyelids, they always seemed to be staring at things.

Reccer's comments: The author says this isn't crack, but I think it's a shining gem of the crackfic genre - a premise that seems ridiculous on the surface treated with absolute commitment, until it becomes vivid and real. Take the plunge into this splashy tale of piscine lycanthropy and you'll never see a fishtank quite the same way again.

When wounded army vet John Watson applies for a job as an aquarium security guard, he has no idea what’s about to happen after dark.

This underrated author has a spectacular sense of worldbuilding, and this fic is suspenseful, sexy, vivid, hilarious and surprisingly touching. The plot twists come fast and furious, and I especially love this very inventive version of Moriarty and Moran (who are both female in this story). Fishnappings! Sushi-related threats! Weird and eldritch magic!

Also, it’s set in the London Aquarium and was written long before any pivotal scenes occurred there on the show.

Excerpt: Mycroft was the one who became the killjoy for the tuna pair. A few days after the discovery of their morse code capabilities Mycroft appeared at the window of their tank. Dressed formally as usual, umbrella and all, he sat down facing the glass and proceeded to unfold the paper under his arm.

After floating by a few times trying to read the news, Sherlock darted to John, fin flicking a short message, S - T - O - P / C - O - D - E.

The urgent message made John want to see what Sherlock had read on the paper and managed to catch Mycroft before he folded it away. There on the offered page was a small article questioning “Are Sea Life’s Fish Intelligent?” Below was a little black and white picture of their tank and, sure enough, the black shapes of John and Sherlock within. The paper itself was one of those silly “Are aliens cavorting amongst my sheep?!” types, but still, the fact that someone had written in to say they’d seen the fish at the aquarium doing code and talking to each other in an intelligent manner was unsettling. And who knew who else would see it and start watching a little closer.

Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length:299313

Warnings: AU-Historical,Alpha/Omega
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:John Watson, the new Earl of Saughton, is madly in love with the beautiful Mary Morstan. But he has returned from the Peninsular War to find his family on the brink of ruin and his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. He has little choice when he is introduced to Mycroft Holmes, a civil servant of apparently unlimited wealth and no social ambitions for himself - but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his only brother, the unorthodox and irascible Omega Sherlock Holmes. Can John forget the woman he loved and find happiness with a man so very different from his lost love?
Reccer's comments:This story was amazing from start to finish. She did a lot of research into that time period and you could tell. I found her characters engaging just brilliant. She has such a way with words...This story was a delight and such a fun ride. I will want to come back and re read this gem over again. So many lines were perfect I loved this one of so many..... Sherlock had lifted his head and there was an amused look on his face as he stared at his husband. "John, I am quite aware that you are a good and moral man, and that your words and thoughts on that matter are genuine. You are my moral compass, a fixed point in a changing age."

Her Sherlock is amazing and a little bit reckless but her John's such a gentleman and caring doctor, until the need to deliver a brutal beat down arises. :))))))))) They make the best team together as always.

Title: The Case of the Green Gown

Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, torture
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: ...Watson had at that time deserted me for a wife, the only selfish action which I can recall in our association. I was alone.
---Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier

Reccer's comments: Wow, [livejournal.com profile] splix has done it again! Enriched the Sherlock fandom with a marvellously clever story, literally hefty in almost every sense of the word.

Make sure you’ll have nothing important on for the next few days when you start reading this for you’ll be hooked and oblivious to the demands of reality. You’ll find yourself laughing and cheering, and grappling with the most horrendous angst, swearing and recovering from punches that go straight for the solar plexus and sobbing. Oh, there’s so much delicious bittersweet sobbing in this fic.

Then there’s the great characterisation throughout. All the well-known players completely IC there’s a whole array of fascinating OC’s. As usual everything is written in that exquisite language that’s this author’s special trademark.

Apart from an incredibly tightly plotted casefic that contains more than enough intrigue to fill at least two seasons of Sherlock this is a wonderfully crafted psychological study of the human condition and all those feelings that shape us into what we are: love, friendship, grief, greed, jealousy. Greatness and despicable flaws, both are shown in every character. And throughout it all both Holmes brothers suffer so nobly. After all, no one is better aware than they are that caring isn’t an advantage.

After the havoc Moftiss wreaked with S3 this fic helped me to recover my love for Sherlock the series, even long before Moftiss made it all better again with TAB. Everyone who has got huge problems with Mary should read this fic just to admire the nuanced approach to her personage. In this fic I often loathed her, despised her and really, really didn’t like her but throughout [livejournal.com profile] splix managed to make me sympathise with her plight. After all, Sherlock returning from the dead wasn’t exactly what she had bargained for.

But what’s the fic about? That I’m not going to tell for I don’t want to spoil your fun. Just start reading like I did and be mesmerised and enchanted like I was. You won’t be disappointed.

Highly, highly recommended!

Title: The Silent Girl
Artist/Author: Devilry
Pairing: Watson/Lestrade
Length: 60 pages
Rating: R (mature subject matter, sex)
Warnings: Contains spoilers, highlight to view Implied non-con/incest/underage
Verse: Canon
Author's summary:
During Holmes' absence Watson and Lestrade travel to a village on a case.

Reccer's comments:
This is one of my favourite fanworks in Sherlock Holmes fandom, and it is a standout piece among all the fandoms I've participated in, as well as being one of the most sophisticated and successful graphic novels I've had the pleasure to get my hands on. This is a complete graphic novel pastiche that pairs Watson and Lestrade during the Great Hiatus to investigate the disappearance of a young girl from a prominent family. As well as providing us with an intriguing (and tragic) case to follow, the author also weaves in several other story elements, including Mycroft's correspondence with Sherlock, a plotline featuring Sebastian Moran, Watson's continuing grief over the loss of Holmes, and some very satisfying character and relationship development involving Lestrade.

The supporting characters are lively and believable as individuals, each with their own inner lives and motivations. While there aren't many significant female characters in canon to work with, the artist does an admirable job adding in the women in this story, and even creates an original character who I would love to know more about. Exterior and interior shots are meticulously detailed and create a living, atmospheric world for the characters to inhabit, with weather, architecture, period clothing, animal and plant life all given the time and attention needed to paint a portrait of the era and location in the reader's mind. Gentle touches of humour are incorporated into the artwork, and I particularly enjoyed a certain canine character who appears briefly.

I find myself thinking back over this story often, particularly when I'm considering how to improve my own writing skills, and the book stands up very well to re-readings. The artist has generously shared the whole tale online, and it can be enjoyed here: The Silent Girl

Title: An Innocent Man
Author: Fangs_Fawn
Length: 183,531 words
Pairing: Gen
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Violence, attempted suicide
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: "And what about John Watson?" Sherlock had asked. He had expected a rather dull answer...after all, he had been away. He had not expected to hear that John had spent the past two years in prison. Series 3 AU. Not slash.

Reccer's comments: If you like John whump, this is certainly the fic for you. Sherlock comes back after two years of being away, only to find out that John has spent that entire time behind bars, convicted of being an accessory to Sherlock's supposed 'crimes.' He's exonerated and released just before Sherlock's return - but not before going through some pretty traumatic experiences at the hands of certain guards and prisoners.

This is a Series 3 AU, but you will still meet some of the characters from that series, only under different circumstances. And some of the same dialogue takes place as well - only, again, in different scenarios than in canon. I particularly liked Bill Wiggins here, as he happens to meet John while they are both serving time, and ends up in a happier place than his counterpart does as a result.

I really liked Lestrade's character her as well, as he ends up being the loyal friend and champion that John needs to secure his eventual release.

A big part of the story is John coming to terms with the fact that the people who knew about Sherlock's fake death - Mycroft and Molly - never came forward with the truth so as to exonerate John before he ever went to trial. Sherlock is off the hook in this regard, at least, since he had no idea what was happening with John while he was away.

Throughout all of this, there is also an actual "Empty House" scenario unfolding through it all. We get an actual Sebastian Moran and an actual, very tense confrontation, something I really missed in the BBC's version.

And one final warning: There is mention of John having attempted suicide while in prison, although the event itself occurs offscreen. Just be aware.

Enjoy!

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: An 18 year old Sherlock is about to start a new life. Mycroft, as always, is worried.

Reccer's comments: This is a really lovely, multi-layered glimpse at pre-series Sherlock and Mycroft. Sherlock is an insecure teenager about to start studying at Cambridge, and Mycroft, already quite renowned as a government official in the city, behaves in the over-protective and parental  way we'd expect him to. I really like the idea of Mycroft trying to help Sherlock settle into his new surroundings and of Sherlock resenting him for it, while still being ultimately grateful that Mycroft's there for him and understands him when no one else does. Like all stories dealing with the Holmes brothers' complex relationship, the interactions and the dialogue between the brothers depicted here are very fascinating, fraught with meaning, references to a difficult past and a sense of "the two of us against the rest of the world".

Watching Sherlock move into his new room and meet Sebastian Wilkes for the first time is as intriguing as it is painful: He's trying to prove to his brother that he can manage on his own, but being the person he is, he struggles terribly with interacting with other people to the point that he simply can't cope. I think this is a really convincing and sympathetic portrayal of what young Sherlock would have been like. It makes you understand why Mycroft worries so much and really makes you want to give the poor boy a tight hug. Although obviously the Sherlock shown here would simply shy away from it...

It's all quite sad, admittedly, but there's a certain blue scarf involved, and that brightens things up a little, beautifully so.

Author's summary:Holmes doesn't understand Jim at all. Not like I do. Not yet.

Reccer's comments: This is one of [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren’s least popular stories. Such a shame for I think it is one of her best. It is a remix of a very dark story, written in [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren’s unique, bare, powerful language that slashes down at you like strokes from a sword wielded by some ghastly monster.

This is not just a horror story, no, it is a horrid story. And yet, once you start reading you’ll read on breathlessly. There’s no escaping from this dark hellish pit of sadism and mindfuckery that would have the Marquis himself in raptures in his Bastille prison.

The story is told from the POV of Moran who’s torn between his jealousy of and his own fascination for and attraction to Jim’s newest object of desire. To have been abducted by and be the prisoner of Jim is no holiday, to have to contend with Moran’s attempts to seduce Jim into loving him again is a straight descent into hell.

Utterly disturbing, but a marvellous read if you want to explore what Jim’s mind dungeon probably looks like.

Author's summary: Urban fantasy AU. In which John Watson is a war sorcerer recently invalided home from Afghanistan. In London he meets Sherlock Holmes, the world’s most irritating urban sorcerer and only consulting detective. There, John finds himself and Sherlock suddenly under attack by a mysterious and malevolent power—and drawn into a mystery that may tear London apart. A fusion with the Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin, but no prior knowledge is needed.

Reccer's comments: No S3 Spoilers

This impressive work is one of my favorite BBC series fics.

The bare facts: it is a fusion (with crossover elements consisting of cameos from two urban magic series) that requires no knowledge of the originals to steal your breath, squeeze your heart, and cause you to pound the nearest surface in amazed delight. The vivid, sharply realized settings and the stunning way in which John, Sherlock, Mycroft, and Irene just fit as their IC selves into the dangerous and fantastic landscapes of the City of London is truly remarkable. Let me not leave out the brilliant dialogue, the skillfully re-imagined S1 and S2 cases, and the plot twists so gorgeously done that my sole desire (aside from thanking the author) was to find the other enraptured commenters and hold a joyously raucous re-reading party.

I'll be honest: This fic reminds me exactly why I fell deeply, madly in love with the BBC series in 2011.

Excerpt: “What are you exactly, John?”

“Washed-up RAMC,” John says lightly.

“Oh, no, I think there’s rather more to you than that,” Sherlock breathes.

He grabs John by the elbow and yanks him to a stop; John nearly stumbles. He gets his footing back and has his mouth open to swear at Sherlock when the iron-like grip loosens, shifts, and then Sherlock takes John’s hand in his own with surprising gentleness. Their eyes meet, dark blue to an ice blue so intense that John has to remind himself to breathe. Then John feels a softly glowing warmth in his hand, and in the next instant all of London thrills through John’s body and his heart suddenly jumps, resets its rhythm, palpitates, and then pounds in the rhythm of cars stopping and starting at thousands of traffic lights. His head fills with the laughter and sorrow of eight million souls; his lungs fill with the air they inhale and exhale. John closes his eyes and allows himself to exist within every footstep on every cobblestone, every raindrop falling on every roof, every spark of electricity burning through every streetlamp in London.

Sherlock pulls away and his gaze is challenging, his lips mocking.

Silently John reaches into his pocket and takes out the shell casing belonging to the bullet that is currently lodged in a dead serial killer’s heart. Sherlock’s face opens in a grin and John is absurdly pleased by Sherlock’s smile.

He reaches out for Sherlock’s hand.

The shell casing firmly fixed in his mind, John clears the London fog from their eyes and shows them both the clear starry night skies above a starkly beautiful desert. He fills both their lungs with the rush and roar of air during a parachute jump. He makes their hearts step in time with the inexorable march of conquering soldiers down through thousands of years of history. Then he presses the shell casing between his and Sherlock’s hand. He feels the sharp, desperate struggle between life and death imbued into the metal; he can feel the tiny thing pulsating as if it were the heart that it had stopped so recently.

And he sends a thrill of power into Sherlock’s body, filling him with the hot roar and spray of blood that the bullet remembers and will always remember.

“You’re a war sorcerer,” Sherlock says the words like a spell that is new to him: feeling the words for their hidden powers, tasting and feeling them for secrets and nuances. His eyes are scanning over John, studying every molecule of him, sniffing out every tendril of magic that is awakening deep inside John’s blood. “How can you be this powerful in London?”

“Because you are a battlefield,” John whispers, and with that realization his world blurs, reels, and then snaps into razor-sharp focus again.

Title: Five Times Sherlock and Lestrade Never Met...

Author's summary: “The symbol perfects itself by the accumulation of approximations. As such, it is comparable to a spiral, or rather, a solenoid, which each repetition brings closer to its target.” Gilbert Durand, L'Imagination symbolique.
Reccer's comments: Don't let either the title (if you're a sentimentalist, like me) or quote (if you're wary of French structuralists) put you off. This is one of the most subtle, poignant yet hopeful S/L sagas recently posted. If you're interested in the two characters but have never held much faith in a romantic relationship for them and want to give belief a go, go for this.

One somewhat consensual headcanon in the Sherlock fandom, struck early on, was that Sherlock must have met DI Lestrade when he barged into a crime scene high as a grasshopper on grass and began to rattle off briliant deductions. Well...you won't find it here. What you'll find instead is a series of might-have-been episodes in which their paths cross again and again, ever since teen!Greg found a solitary child looking for fossils in his native Somerset, only for life to spin them apart.

Yet each transient meeting leaves its trace, each contributes to shape their respective identities. In the meantime, there's laughter, tears, suspense, casefic, Sherlock-made craziness and a crowning chapter that brings together all the loose ties and takes the spiral of eternal return to a wonderful, glowing conclusion. As in her other works, Grassle's mature writing, her grasp of pacing, humour, imagery and detail make this series a joy to read, as I've found time and again since it was first posted.

Artist's summary: Day 12: Making Out, of the 30 Day OTP Challenge: "You’re wearing too many clothes."

Reccer's comments: Khorazir's body of work is so rich and lovely that it's difficult for me to choose a single artwork of hers. In fact I considered several different candidates, but was having a problem just selecting one. Then I saw this!

I've never seen a piece of fanart in this fandom that has given me a more of a powerful jolt of physicality, of an undeniable, immediate bodily presence than this one. I think it is the gorgeous rendering of the texture of the skin on Sherlock's neck that gave me that initial shock of reality. His shoulder and collar bone, the chest hair, all exquisite. Then my eye was drawn to John, and I saw that his neck, hair, eyes, and t-shirt were beautiful as well. I'm glad that Khorazir left in Sherlock and John's wrinkles and freckles, little signs of aging and the "imperfections" that make us human, the beauty of which is shortchanged if we believe that attractiveness is limited to unblemished youth.

Verse: Sherlock BBC and and the Master and Commander series

Author's summary: 1) "Many Weary Months": In the summer of the year 1812, a Lieutenant S. Holmes of His Majesty's Royal Navy, banished to Upper Canada for insubordination, wrote a personal letter to his friend and companion Doctor St-J. H. Watson. He enclosed this letter in a package with several other objects intended to be sent to the Doctor via the next packet ship.
This parcel was never received by Doctor Watson, nor was its existence ever known of to scholars or historians. Until now.

2) "A Letter from Dr Saint-John Watson to Lt Sherlock Holmes": In the year of 1812, England still carried out its bloody war with France upon the seas. Gravely injured in action, Dr Saint-John Watson, physician and ship's surgeon aboard HMS Fortitude wrote a letter to Lt Sherlock Holmes of His Majesty's Navy, who at the time was banished to the Provincial Marines in Upper Canada.

3) "Captain S. Holmes, of HMS Peregrine": 19th century style portrait sketch of Captain Sherlock Holmes. Commissioned by his brother, on the occasion of his first ship command, the 'Peregrine.'

4) "Doctor Watson, Physician": 19th century style sketch and ficlet of Doctor St-John Watson, ship's surgeon and physician in His Majesty's Royal Navy.

Reccer's comments: What do a long-lost letter, a pickled!sloth, an elegant portrait of a captain in the Royal Navy, and a brass seal of a bee have in common? They all make an appearance in a clever art, object, and fic collaboration. This series is a testament to the friendship of the characters and of two talented friends who shared their fandom loves with each other (and us!). Designed specifically for British and Canadian history/Royal Navy/Regency Period geeks as well as Sherlock and M&C fans. Through an archaeological report, an auction book catalog entry, and a variety of objects and fanart, alltoseek and Jessamy Griffith bring alive flashes of a relationship which outlasted Sherlock and John's naval careers.

A note about the Captain and his Physician: the authors clearly depict Sherlock and John in a same-sex romantic friendship, something which both men and women of the period practiced. The gift giving and affectionate modes of address of the early nineteenth century show how the words and behaviors of middle- and upper-class British men differ from the 21st-century "mainstream" (for want of a better term) model of Anglo-American masculinity, details which I find delightful. Whatever else occurred between them was likely not going to appear in an uncoded letter, so like historians, we are left with an incomplete picture. And while I have heard rumors that a couple individuals are privy to sources yet unseen about this illustrious couple, I can only work with the material at hand. ;-)

Length: 17,893 words
Rating: general

Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: Mycroft has always protected his younger brother, but there are some things he just can't control. Sherlock's relationship with John Watson is one of them. That doesn't mean that he's not going to try, but in the end, sometimes Sherlock makes his own choices. And John Watson might just be a match for Mycroft when it comes to protecting Sherlock.

Author’s notes: All actions happen off-stage and out of sight, but fit within the episodes of season one and two of Sherlock, and are my attempt to explain how Mycroft can be simultaneously so powerful and so inept. I suppose, in the end, he's just as human as the rest of them. Obviously this means spoilers for various episodes, including for the end of The Great Game and the transition into the Scandal in Bohemia at the end of chapter one. If you have not seen season two, please do not read either chapter yet. Spoilers suck. Thank you!

Reccer's comments: If you love understanding a character’s motivations, this fic is for you, and Scifigrl47’s Mycroft is everything I want. He really does have Sherlock’s best interest at heart. He’s the big brother I almost dream about: protective, powerful, thoughtful, and droll. (Or is that chilling, scary, and manipulative?) The author shows us all those sides in detail and fills in many missing moments. She/he sets up a realistic, yet sentimental, back story that highlights both Mycroft and Sherlock’s motivations throughout. And I loved watching the characters progress through the events of season two and understanding Mycroft’s point of view, particularly in how it relates to Sherlock and his growing relationship with John. There are many standout scenes, but three of my favorites are: Mycroft “interrogating” the CIA agent that Sherlock dropped out the window (how many times?!) during the Irene Adler storyline – chilling and somehow rational; John visiting Mycroft after Irene Adler’s departure that pacts an emotional and steely wallop. This is a John I love – protective, fierce, considerate, and understated. Another scene has Mycroft advising an upset “I don’t have friends” Sherlock during the Baskerville case. How Mycroft chooses to handle his control over this moment is unexpected and ultimately healing. Overall an exceptionally satisfying and well-written read!

P.S. On a side note, I asked permission from the web moderators to plug the Sherlock Seattle Convention coming November 3 & 4th in Seattle, Washington. The panels being offered range from meeting fanfic writers and artists to learning how to create a video, write a fic, or discussing the many iterations of Sherlock Holmes. I think it’s going to be a blast and can’t wait to attend. Give yourself a fandom gift and join us. *grin* Could be fun. To register go to http://www.Sherlock-Seattle.org

Length: 5,000 words
Rating: R/Mature
Warnings: Drug addiction, slight dub-con (neither of the listed pairings)
Verse: Sherlock BBC, though Trevor and the case of the Gloria Scott are bookverse.
Author's summary: Sherlock's smile is crooked and shaky and uncertain what it's doing on his face, but Victor just smiles back. And then there's Sebastian, and a mirror, and a razor, and a straw. He smiles at Sherlock like he has a secret.

Reccer's comments: I'm insta-reccing this because I actually just read it, and it is beautiful and gut-punchy and every sort of amazing. The writing is a bit sparse, and the story seems to be told in a series of connected vignettes, and it really, really works. Also, certain phrases and themes are repeated in a really effective way. as for characters, Victor is a really nice guy here, and I love the two of them together, but I can't fault him for the decision he ultimately makes. Seb is pitch-perfect and a creepy asshole without really being a villain, which I find very believable. And Sherlock's obsessive focus on uncovering the truth of everything means he knows exactly how to lie convincingly to himself. Watching the trainwreck that is his life in his 20s is kind of heartbreaking, but not overdone. Basically, everything about this fic is A++.

Now in the third time around, it's almost like he's getting used to this. )

Author's summary: Originally written for a request on the kink meme, which asked for Sherlock having been in an abusive relationship with Sebastian, and John helping him heal from it.

Reccer's comments: Warnings for: drug use, rape, physical abuse. I often run into authors who get me excited about writing and inspire me to work on my own pieces. Very rarely do I run into someone who makes me want to throw up my hands and call it quits. Justwolf is definitely edging into that territory with the way that she effortlessly captures human wants and emotions and perfectly observed details. This fic has an almost dreamlike tone with a very real dread rising as an undercurrent and imagery that made me feel like I was looking through frosted glass. Ugh, just lovely and beautifully heartbreaking. <3

Author's summary: Sebastian is busy getting his lip split open when he first meets Jim Moriarty.

Reccer's comments: I first fell into this pairing after reading this rec, and the reccers comments pretty much sums up for me why this pairing works. The Sebastian Moran in "A String of Empty Houses" is now basically my head-canon for the BBC series, and I'm just waiting (hoping/dreaming/praying) for this Sebastian to show up in season 3. An exquisitely written fic with many insightful details (a bunch of it canon, coming from the books) has Sebastian and Jim fleshed out so well, that you basically end up rooting for the bad guys. Sebastian is a beautiful beast, and Jim is beautifully cracked; you will have no difficulty imagining these vignettes of their life running alongside the television episodes up until the Reichenbach Fall. It is also accompanied by a lovely piece of art by dramatis-echo.

Excerpt:

The post-it notes are the worst.

The so-called foremost consulting criminal in the world walks like a cat, and to a mind used to juggling entire illicit empires locks are at best a minor irritation. Often, Sebastian wakes to his SoHo loft littered with tiny, gaudy rectangles. Sometimes they're filled with unrelated quotes drawn from an esoteric range of literature, or arranged in cartoonish smileys. Usually, for some reason that his uncomplicated hunter's mind cannot immediately fathom, they're blank.

Author's summary: John Watson has three siblings, not one...and together they are the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Reccer's comments: So basically John, Harry, Anthea, and Sebastian Moran are the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse AND THEN THEY HAVE CHRISTMAS DINNER WITH SHERLOCK, MYCROFT, CLARA & MORIARTY. It's crack at its finest and its family fic!
