Title: The Last Companion
Author: standbygo
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/OMCs, Sherlock/OFCs
Length: 34,075 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Discussions of non-con because Moriarty is creepy
Verse: Sherlock BBC/Firefly

Author's summary: Thirty years after the Miranda Wars, there is peace, both on the Rim and the Core planets. There are a number of old social mores still in place, such as the Order of Companions, but there is a sense that even such respected practices are coming to an end…

Sherlock is a Companion - the best Companion on Persephone. With a bit of detective work on the side, of course. Then he meets a man named John Watson, encounters a series of bizarre cases, and finds his world is getting turned upside down.

Reccer's comments: All of this author’s Sherlock fics are well worth the read, but I chose this one because of the unique fusion with Firefly, a sci-fi television show. I myself wasn’t that familiar with the world of Firefly, and I don’t think knowledge of that world is necessary to enjoy this story to the fullest. The writing is such that any necessary background information is seamlessly woven into the narrative.

In this universe, Sherlock has been groomed from childhood to become a Companion, and in adulthood he has become one of the most sought-after ones. A Companion, to put it delicately, is a paid escort. But Companions have been trained not only in the art of pleasure and seduction, but they are some of the most educated and talented people on the planet. They are paid not only for providing sexual intimacy, but almost anything else that the client may crave as well. And Sherlock’s skills at deduction ensure that the clients always come away satisfied.

Of course being a Companion is not Sherlock’s only vocation. He also does detective work on the side. In the middle of one of his investigations, he is rescued by a stranger going by the name of John Watson. Of course, the two of them get caught up in a case, become fascinated with each other, go dancing, fall in love -- and it almost all comes crashing down due to the machinations of one James Moriarty.

Reccer's comments: This is a wonderful Halloween anthology made up of five short stories, each with very different tones and pairings. Both of the Johnlock vignettes start out scary but wind up sweet, and the wonderful descriptions have a stylistic hint of Bradbury's October Country about them. The Mystrade story of a frustrated genie and his reluctant master is out-and-out charming; the others are more haunting and tragic. A vividly imagined and strikingly written collection of treats that will sweep you away this witching hour! :)

Author's summary: Posted on Tumblr for the 25 Days of Fic-mas challenge. As many Christmassy Sherlock ficlets as I can manage between now and Christmas, based on the tags as follows: Shopping for gifts, Hot cocoa, Winter wonderland, Christmas cards, Ghost of Christmas past, Naughty and nice, The Nutcracker, Baking, Making a Christmas list, Scrooge, Mulled wine, Ugly Christmas jumpers, Warming up by the fire, Trimming the tree, Christmas party, Family traditions, Christmas without you, Mistletoe, Christmas songs, All wrapped up, Christmas movies/specials, Snowed in, All I want for Christmas is you, St. Nicholas, Christmas morning. Completed.

Reccer's comments: I feel very lucky to get the chance to rec this month, as I have been reading so much wonderful fic thanks to all the holiday fests and challenges recently. This anthology by Odamaki was one of my favorite stories to follow this December -- I was stunned by the richness, poignancy, and variety of these vignettes.

Every chapter was rewarding, and I was especially touched to read about Lestrade struggling to find a way to reconnect with his adolescent daughter; James Sholto approaching Christmas with a determination to surpass the limits placed on him by physical disability and emotional isolation; and an absolutely breath-taking magical realism AU, running across multiple chapters, which followed Sherlock and John through an intricate, absorbing and unique rendition of the Nutcracker fairytale.

I hope you enjoy this lovely collection as much as I did, and if you like, the author has devoted the final chapter to providing easy navigation links identifying the pairing and main characters of each chapter and also marking the magical realism chapters so that you can easily seek out or avoid whichever vignettes suit your taste. A beautiful wintery gift to the fandom from a very talented author.

Less universally acknowledged is that a single man in possession of very little in the way of fortune may be in want of a partner as well, but John Watson had little time or energy to devote to his own wants or needs...
Enter one Mr Holmes...

Reccer's comments: I adored this story to pieces it is brilliant. She did an amazing job with the manner of speech and such a great writing style. John and Molly are so cute as friends and the story is just charming.

I do love all the retellings of Pride and Prejudice and in this verse it's wonderful. Her fic is original and delightful. I also love how there is no period homophobia...love who you want and live how you want.

Sherlock and John were perfection together so sexy. The sex was on fire and it was fluffy as well. It is worth reading or re reading. :)

Reccer's Comments: Lestrade, Molly, Sally and Anderson are investigating a series of suicides but something very strange and frightening is going on... you are as safe as you want to be. The video combines clever editing, a fast pace and will make you wish there was a fic based along these lines. It's a lot of fun to see the Yarders, and notably Lestrade play a heroic role, and the adaptation of canon footage is very skillfully done. There are definitely some moments that will make you jump.

Just to be aware there is some mild horror imagery including spiders, just for those who have problems with such things.

Author's summary: John shook his head, then suddenly smirked. "You know what your real problem with Anderson is? It's the unresolved sexual tension." Sherlock performs an experiment to prove John wrong.

Reccer's comments: I admit I'm a great fan of cracky themes/pairings handled with seriousness. (If they involve Anderson my messed up heart just skips a beat in happiness.) This story shows Anderson/Sherlock pairing as something indeed unexpected and a bit of a joke at first, but also something that actually works in the end as a form of friends-with-benefits (co-workers-with-benefits?).

The author handles this ship with full awareness of the fact that most Sherlock fans view it as crack, but gives it all the respect and consideration one would a popular and well established in fandom OTP. The story is funny, witty, well written and also - very hot.

If you like Anderlock, you should read this fic. If you ever were curious about this pairing, but feared what you can find by randomly searching for it: this is a great fic to explore this ship. Enjoy. :)

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sequel to Ten Days. After ten days of unspeakable torture at the hands of Sherlock's worst enemies, John Watson has returned to Baker Street to live with a man whose death, no matter how fake, still haunts him. But his recovery is not easy, his friendship with Sherlock is strained, and a dangerous but hidden menace continues to threaten them both.

Reccer's comments: This is an intense, gripping case fic that had me at the edge of my seat throughout. Seeing how it's an epic novel length, that's truly saying something. It's the sequel to another fic that I recced almost two years ago, Ten Days. If you haven't yet read Ten Days and don't want any spoilers for that fic, then stop reading NOW.

This story isn't quite as disturbing as its prequel, since it isn't our favourite doctor being put through the ringer this time. The Slash Man contains more lighthearted, even some humorous, moments to break up the overall dark tone of the story, but it's still gut-wrenchingly powerful.

This story takes place Post-Reichenbach, after Sherlock's return, and goes AU after Series 2. It begins two weeks after the end of Ten Days. You'll most likely need to read that one first to understand what's going on. John is recovering from his traumatic ordeal, residing once again at Baker Street and reunited with the once-dead detective. What sets this fic apart from others of its ilk are two things. One is how the author portrays the consequences of Sherlock's decisions on the supporting characters. It's a perfect example of how the actions of one man can send a ripple effect through numerous lives. John is not the only one with scars. The second is the author's skillful weaving of a tale that is equally plot-driven and character-driven. There are plenty of heartwrenching, emotional scenes, but never at the cost of a well-written, exciting mystery.

Before starting this story, the reader should be aware that it ends with quite the cliffhanger. The third and final part of what is to be a trilogy is in the works, but has not been posted yet. So it all depends on how patient you are for a resolution as to whether you decide to read this now or not.

Again, I can't recommend this one enough. Please do give it a try; I think you'll be glad you did.

Author's summary: Lestrade invites John along to a yearly ritual of humiliation at paint-ball. Sherlock wouldn't miss this for anything.

Reccer's comments: Here in the last few minutes of April Fool's Day, I thought I would share a story that made me laugh.  Actually, to be honest, this story gave me that special, exhilarated sense of fun that comes when you see a great stunt pulled off with athleticism and artistry.

As the summary says, this is a story about John taking charge of the New Scotland Yard paint-ball team, much to Sherlock’s delight. It does a wonderful job exploring the tense but enjoyable team dynamics of the group, making particularly good use, in my opinion, of Sally Donovan. It features a low-key, incredibly BAMF John, and I love his out-of-the-box thinking and his effortless leadership.

Overall the story is intelligent, joyful, and gracefully physical.

It is set in an AU of the author’s longer ’verse, but it works perfectly well as a standalone.

Author's summary: John Watson had no intentions of taking over the family business, but when he returns from Afghanistan, battered and bruised, and discovers that his sister Harry has run their restaurant into the ground, he doesn't have much choice. There's only one thing that can save the Empire from closing for good – the celebrity star of the BBC series Restaurant Reconstructed, Chef Sherlock Holmes.

Reccer's comments: In the author's own words: the one where Sherlock Holmes is Gordon Ramsay. This epic restaurant AU is delightful in so many ways. Almost everyone from the show is here, but don't worry that they'll be unrecognizable as themselves. Everyone is perfectly in character. Sherlock may be a chef and restaurant owner in this 'verse, but he's still a detective at heart, still a master of observation and deduction.... and of course, still his abrasive self. John is still an invalided army doctor, only saddled here with a failing restaurant that has been in his family for generations. And the two of them still have an inexplicable connection almost from the moment they meet.

You have angst, humour and fluff in almost equal amounts in this story. Plus you have the added bonus of delicious recipes included with almost every chapter! What more could you ask for?

Author's summary: Two Elizabethan actors dream of leaving women's roles behind, and Master Sherlock Holmes agrees to help them find them a playwright to write them roles to rival Marlowe's Tamburlaine. But strange things are afoot in the Holmes household, and Sherlock and John must accomplish this feat while discovering who wants to kill Sherlock and why.

Reccer's comments: Fans of Elizabethan drama and Shakespeare, rejoice! For here you shall find a most delightful concoction, one to rival the plays presented in the Curtain and the Rose. [livejournal.com profile] mundungus42 creates a tour de force: mixing the history and drama of Elizabethan England and skillfully bringing into it many of the characters we love so well. The dialogue is intelligible to 21st-century readers and shines with wit throughout (keep your eye out for many references to Shakespeare's plays). Sherlock, John, Shakespeare, and Sally especially stand out for me, not least because of the terrific banter that sparks between them.

The settings and the culture of the period are treated with equal care. I clearly felt that this was a world with rather different values and beliefs than our own; yet it was not so foreign that the motivations and emotions of the main characters were obscured. If you enjoy AUs, history, or the theatre, I strongly suspect you will be satisfied by the richness of the repast spread before you.

Excerpt: John followed Master Sherlock up a creaky wooden staircase to a store-room, which held all manner of props and pieces of scenery. To John's surprise, the gatherer who had given him a free ticket had positioned himself in the store-room beside the heavy curtain that separated the store-room from the theatre.

“Master Sherlock!” he exclaimed, giving an exaggerated bow. “How delightful to see you again for the Lyly! Pray, was it Mister Burbage's Phao that enticed you to our Great O once more, or perhaps Mister Kempe as Cupid?”

“Neither,” said Master Sherlock shortly.

“Oh?” asked the gatherer, with badly feigned innocence. “Was it perhaps Mister Hoddleston as Venus or Mister Wishart as Sapho?”

John managed to turn a guffaw into a cough, but Master Sherlock stiffened.

“If you really wish to make a career of acting in order to support your wife and children and pay the debt you owe for your house in Stratford,” he said coldly, “you would do well not to practice your base humour on your betters, particularly those who patronise your troupe. And if you cannot control your idle tongue, perhaps you should return to the glove making trade your father tried to knock into your thick skull.”

If Master Sherlock's verbal assault struck anywhere near the truth, the gatherer made no sign of it as he bowed. “Base humour is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. Shall I send up an orange seller for your amusement?” he asked John.

John glanced at Sherlock's pursed lips and shook his head. “We would prefer to be left alone.”

The gatherer eyed John with new interest. “Oh, would we?”

“Hang you, you brazen-faced churl!” exclaimed Master Sherlock as he swept past the impertinent fellow.

The gatherer met John's eye challengingly. He had intelligent hazel eyes and sported a pointed beard that reminded John of Lord Holmes's, but John was in no mood for games. He seized the gatherer by the doublet and slammed him against the store-room's wall.

“You've had your fun,” said John in a low voice. “But it's over now. If I see you so much as raise an eyebrow in my master's direction, by God's bones, you're going to find it difficult to speak your lines through a broken jaw. Am I understood?”

“You're made of sterner stuff than his last minder,” he said approvingly. “Let us all hope that your fortitude will last the next three hours.”

This, gentles all, is a nailbiter of a fic written post-S1 by an author who excels in angst, and recorded by a podficcer who can (and does) deliver the goods flawlessly.

[livejournal.com profile] morganstuart has written some of the most wrenching, heartbreaking fic in the fandom... but this is not one of those stories *g* By which I mean this one doesn't actually go so far as to break your heart. It does, however, retains all the qualities I adore about her fic: a suspenseful H/C-heavy plot, vivid action, and characters with great inner courage. [personal profile] lunchee is a fantastic podficcer, and her reading expresses the intensity and urgency of the story perfectly. I love her various character voices, but what stands out for me here is her John: John is injured and cold, and you can hear it in her performance of his dialogue, even as she keeps every word clear and understandable. Not an easy task, but she pulls it off with flying colors.

All the players—John, Greg, Sally, Sherlock, and yes, even Anderson—shine in this story. That's the way Morganstuart writes them and the way Lunchee reads them. Just beautiful.

Author's summary: “You don’t write love songs,” John says. “You write about other things and people misinterpret them because in the right lighting they look like love songs. But they’re not.”

Reccer's comments: This isn’t at all the cracky fic one might expect from a Band!AU. In fact, it’s an intriguing, poignant, lyrical (no pun intended) piece. The characters in this fic are still very much them, even when placed in an alternative universe which has very little to do with canon – and that is one of the best things about AUs, seeing how characters can be still so recognizable in such unusual settings. The dynamics and relationships in the fic mirror those in the show – Sherlock is the genius songwriter, Mycroft the concerned brother, John the reliable friend, Irene Sherlock’s witty muse, Jim the stalkerish fan that made it into the band and became the frontman and singer, the member the rest of the band hates but that Sherlock, despite himself, can't help being extremely fascinated by.
A very interesting read.

Years ago, before all of this, Jim stalked Sherlock’s myspace page. Messages every five minutes. Some cryptic, some flattering, some based on the replies of teenage girls without spelling or grammar or adequate control of the shift key to their names. He was dedicated and brutal and when Sherlock finally agreed to listen to a recording of his voice it was perfect. Raw and vicious and sleek and badly-contained; Jim sang in a way that showed Sherlock he understood, understood like no one else ever would.
He knew then that someone who could comprehend what the inside of his head felt like wasn’t someone he should invite into his life. He ignored that knowledge, put it into a box and locked it, and he’ll probably pay for it forever.

“I was going to send roses,” Jim tells him carelessly, “but I thought that was impersonal. And you’d probably only get high and try to eat them.”

Sherlock takes the cigarette from his hand and tucks it between his lips, considering.

“I missed you,” Jim adds. His voice is light, a knife stroking over bare thin skin before the plunge. “Days without you are boring.”

“I understand that’s what the Times crossword was created for,” Sherlock replies. He supposes he should be grateful he hasn’t woken up to find Jim in the kitchen making coffee, barefoot and humming. Lestrade is of the opinion that Jim’s going to murder him one day and then taxidermy his corpse for cuddling, but he only brings it up in the crowded jumble of tourbus nights, nicotine withdrawal and days without sleep. Jim is a bloody good singer, after all.
“Don’t be pedestrian, sweetheart,” Jim replies. He pushes his sunglasses up, his eyes dark and jagged. He appears more focused than anyone else, which is what makes him such an arresting frontman. Sherlock isn’t interested in people; Jim isn’t interested in anything but.
Sherlock doesn’t want him in his flat, where Irene is still laughing over yesterday’s client in a jumper belonging to John, where Mrs Hudson is resignedly cleaning out the fridge and bemoaning the lack of vitamins in his diet.
“What do you want?” he asks, flat, and Jim looks at him with reproach, as though Sherlock should have figured this out.
He has figured it out. That isn’t the point.
Jim bares his teeth in his latest smile, as he says: “I want you to write a song about me.”

Author's summary: Whatever it took, he was going to make this work.

Reccer's comments: “You do realize you’re prostituting yourself for tea, don’t you?”
This sounded humorous, an excellent, funny opening line, until I read on. The sentence echoed repeatedly in my head, as each new appearance of or reference to tea added to its weight and sharpness (a double-edged blade). From comedy to near-tragedy.

Homoromantic asexual Sherlock is my personal headcanon and best of all he is treated as a complex human being here, rather than a fetish object. John is not a one-dimensional savior, which does him justice as well. Their sex is sometimes sad, sometimes beautiful, but always represented with a refreshing air of reality.

[livejournal.com profile] bendingsignpost has nailed Sherlock, a brilliantly-voiced (unreliable) narrator, whose romantic and sexual past has twisted his notions of the proper way to conduct a relationship. Add to this a fantastic characterization of Molly, outstanding dialogue, a glorious passage of violin playing, and an ending that feels so well earned.

Note: If you love this, I enthusiastically recommend Ben's recent posting of the "AU of [his] AUs", AKA No Fixed Point. "Behavioural Modification" is one of the fics given the AU treatment. I'll say no more and leave it to the lucky recc'er who gets to do a formal rec of NFP...

Reccer's comments: Right off the bat (pun not intended) I want to point out that you don't need to know anything about baseball, or even have an interest in it, for you to be swept away by this fic. The story, at its heart and soul, is all about the progression of the relationship between Sherlock and John, which is done at a very satisfying and realistic pace. Having said that, if you are a baseball fan like me, you will find that aspect of the story satisfying as well.

The first chapter (prologue, really) is an introduction to the rules and terms of the sport, but you can easily skip past that to the story proper without missing anything of importance. This is one of my favourite authors, and I was waiting patiently (?) for it to be completed before I started it. When I did, I devoured it within a very short span of time. I would easily put it within my top 10 Sherlock fics.

Family dynamics play a major role in this story as well, for both Sherlock and John. The author even gives Harry and Clara a family of their own, and she does a beautiful job of portraying their relationship in a way that doesn't place all the blame for their problems on just one person. Even the unsympathetic portrayal of Sherlock's family isn't done just for the sake of adding unnecessary conflict, but serves the purpose of explaining why Sherlock acts the way he does in his interactions with other people.

Almost everyone from canon appears in this, and the author does a fantastic job of putting them exactly where they would fit the best in this universe. Greg Lestrade is the team's manager, Mrs Hudson is the team's owner (and also, incidently, the owner of the house that contains Sherlock's apartment), Molly is the team doctor... even Donovan and Anderson make appearances. Moriarty is also here, of course... who is ultimately revealed to be a much more sinister figure than just a rival pitcher who is the bane of Sherlock's existence.

Set aside a few hours for this epic romance.... I guarantee it will be well worth your time.

Verse: Sherlock BBC and and the Master and Commander series

Author's summary: 1) "Many Weary Months": In the summer of the year 1812, a Lieutenant S. Holmes of His Majesty's Royal Navy, banished to Upper Canada for insubordination, wrote a personal letter to his friend and companion Doctor St-J. H. Watson. He enclosed this letter in a package with several other objects intended to be sent to the Doctor via the next packet ship.
This parcel was never received by Doctor Watson, nor was its existence ever known of to scholars or historians. Until now.

2) "A Letter from Dr Saint-John Watson to Lt Sherlock Holmes": In the year of 1812, England still carried out its bloody war with France upon the seas. Gravely injured in action, Dr Saint-John Watson, physician and ship's surgeon aboard HMS Fortitude wrote a letter to Lt Sherlock Holmes of His Majesty's Navy, who at the time was banished to the Provincial Marines in Upper Canada.

3) "Captain S. Holmes, of HMS Peregrine": 19th century style portrait sketch of Captain Sherlock Holmes. Commissioned by his brother, on the occasion of his first ship command, the 'Peregrine.'

4) "Doctor Watson, Physician": 19th century style sketch and ficlet of Doctor St-John Watson, ship's surgeon and physician in His Majesty's Royal Navy.

Reccer's comments: What do a long-lost letter, a pickled!sloth, an elegant portrait of a captain in the Royal Navy, and a brass seal of a bee have in common? They all make an appearance in a clever art, object, and fic collaboration. This series is a testament to the friendship of the characters and of two talented friends who shared their fandom loves with each other (and us!). Designed specifically for British and Canadian history/Royal Navy/Regency Period geeks as well as Sherlock and M&C fans. Through an archaeological report, an auction book catalog entry, and a variety of objects and fanart, alltoseek and Jessamy Griffith bring alive flashes of a relationship which outlasted Sherlock and John's naval careers.

A note about the Captain and his Physician: the authors clearly depict Sherlock and John in a same-sex romantic friendship, something which both men and women of the period practiced. The gift giving and affectionate modes of address of the early nineteenth century show how the words and behaviors of middle- and upper-class British men differ from the 21st-century "mainstream" (for want of a better term) model of Anglo-American masculinity, details which I find delightful. Whatever else occurred between them was likely not going to appear in an uncoded letter, so like historians, we are left with an incomplete picture. And while I have heard rumors that a couple individuals are privy to sources yet unseen about this illustrious couple, I can only work with the material at hand. ;-)

Author's summary:1860. Change is in the air. John is a clergyman and former army chaplain, attempting to settle down in a country parish and lead a quiet life. But with Sherlock Holmes, reputed to be England's most dangerous religious controversialist, as the local aristocrat, what are his prospects of success?

Reccer's comments: Below is my history!fan squee, but I should let fans of English literature know that this AU was inspired by and plays with the conventions of the Victorian religious novel. Yep, it does that and earns its rating! :)

History AUs, particularly those that aspire to at least some historical authenticity, are an especial challenge for the writer. Cultural differences can have an enormous impact on a character, making it difficult to balance the core aspects of the personality with the inevitable changes that arise when a person is raised in a different time. For example, how do you make Sherlock and John come alive in the 1860s, rather than having Holmes and Watson grow up a few decades earlier? To do so well requires a strong grasp of the BBC versions of Doyle's characters as well as the period in question. Achray achieves this particularly well with her John Watson, who from the first is clearly not content with his new position as a rural parson in a quiet English parish:

Birds called in the trees outside, and there was the distant lowing of some cows, but otherwise all was silent. To John, used to the noise of London and before that, the cheerful and frantic bustle of a garrison full of soldiers, the quiet was oppressive. He laid his hands on his books and thought about how far they’d come, by land and sea and rail. He’d spent most of his life running away from precisely this scenario, and now here he was.

Achray's representation of contemporary bigotry is particularly skillful, for she allows even her main protagonists to say and do things that today many of us find unpleasantly reactionary, yet avoids making these characters unsympathetic. Assigning such prejudices to villains would be too easy and shortchange the complexity of the past, where you can find legions of thoughtful, engaging people writing of their love for their family or relatives in one sentence and expressing racist/sexist/classist sentiments in the next. John in this story is kind to women (he clearly enjoys working with Molly and asks her opinion on matters where she is the expert), but he is no supporter of equal rights or suffrage for the fairer sex (though by the end of the story one can envision him eventually thawing under the influence of the right company). Moreover, his letters to Mary show contempt towards what he considers "less interesting" work, the very work she would be handling if she became his wife:

I had expected to spend much of my time engaged in sermon-writing and in reading – as you told me, I am sadly behind after my years away – but my parishioners are determined to entertain me and tell me of their troubles. An astonishing number of them wish to be married, or have their children christened, or take communion classes. I see more than ever how invaluable your assistance could be, as I am unaccustomed to dealing with ladies’ charitable committees and the other smaller concerns of the parish.

For his part, clever, sharp-tongued, iconoclastic Sherlock forgets the realities of everyday life for the middle class and poor, not foreseeing that altering an individual's worldview may cause them not just spiritual anguish, but also destroy their economic stability. And Mary Morstan is an earnest, patient, talented, and faithful woman, but she shares the deep religious prejudices towards unbelievers expressed by many European Christians. It's these imperfections that make the characters more human, as well as situating them realistically in England of the mid-nineteenth century.

In short: come for the Victorian worldbuilding and dialogue, stay for the characters and a certain passionate, heady romance.

Title: O Still Small Voice of Calm
Author: Persiflager
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 5,829 words
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: Written for this prompt on the kinkmeme that asked for a choir AU.

Reccer's comments: I find myself returning to this story every few months. I love how cleverly the author has used all the BBC Sherlock characters, and how in character they remain even though this is such an AU -- they're in university, much younger, and of course, in a choir. I thought Greg Lestrade in particular was a skillful re-imagining of the BBC's Lestrade.

Most of the story is told from John's POV, so we meet the others and come to understand what's going on, and their relationships with Sherlock, as John does. We occasionally see through Sherlock's eyes, and his delight with John is a delight to read. The sequence of events in this story follows that in A Study in Pink to a remarkable extent, and makes me giggle every time. For such a brief piece, it makes me as happy as the music makes John happy.

A note about the music: )

This is short, sweet, and charming as hell.

Author's summary: Written for the sherlockbbc_fic kink meme prompt of Either John and Sherlock or Sherlock and Lestrade have a gigantic row and vow never to speak a word to each other again. Meanwhile, there's a crime scene to investigate. How do they proceed? Sign language? Using a third party as a go-between? Monologuing aloud bitterly? Idek, people. I'm just looking for some crime scene humour. Bonus points if it ends up in a spectacular reconciliation. (Still on the crime scene.)

Reccer's comments: Another appearance of the Skull. This fic manages to be both silly-funny and show why John & Sherlock's relationship works so well. It also shows they're relationship from the outside, and makes it charming, if weird. Very well done.
