Shift
Author: [livejournal.com profile] messageredacted
Pairing: Gen, with perhaps mild John/Sherlock undertones. Strong John & Sherlock friendship.
Length: 10,351
Rating: R for Violence.
Warnings: Violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:“Of course there’s going to be another victim,” Sherlock says. “The sniper isn’t done here.”
“How many will there be?” Lestrade asks.
Sherlock goes for the door and John hurries after him. “It depends what the sniper is trying to say.”

Reccer's comments: A awesome fic, with fayjay version as podfic! yeah! i'm pretty much a Fangirl of the awesome reader Fayjay! she perform every character different, and just like they are!
Also, this could be read it as a Sherlock onesided love, in my point of view. Its very well ploted, very well written and so much intense. Hope you all like it! =*

Title: Sonata Form
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cj_ludd18, whose fic can be found at [livejournal.com profile] paisley_pie
Pairing: None, other than a brief mention of past Sherlock/OMC.
Length: 7,294 words
Author's summary: Mycroft Holmes has always revolved his life around that of his little brother, whether he wishes to do so or not.

Rating: Teen, maybe an R for things listed in the warnings below.
Warnings: Drug use, brief depiction of drug rehab (withdrawal effects), hint of underage drinking, mention of suicidal thoughts, a few swear words.
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Reccer's comments: I'm having a hard time finding words that will do justice to this fic. There are certain types of hurt that can really only occur between siblings - a dual love/resentment that comes from growing up together knowing one sibling is the favorite, or one is the dependable one, or one can get away with everything that another one can't, yet bonding because you're both there - in that life, in that home - and no one else will ever understand you in quite the same way.

That dynamic plays out in a series of moments in Sonata Form. It's a Mycroft POV, and an evolution of Sherlock from ten-year-old spoiled child through his university years and drugs, and leading up to just shortly before John would enter the picture. It's painful and poignant and lovely.

Title: the LOVE series, in six instalments.

Pairing: Holmes/Watson
'Verse: Books.

1.
Title: Four Minor Interludes For The Solo Violin {podfic}
Length: 27,000 words.
Author's Summary: Wounded and traumatized by the Afghan War, John Watson falls in love with a detective who is also a remarkable violinist.
Rating: NC-17.
Warnings: Sexual situations; takes places during The Red-Headed League.

this way for more, please )

Reccer's Comments: I feel like I'm stepping on [livejournal.com profile] lady_carfax 's toes a little bit, here, reccing this right after she recced Full Of Grace, but [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe is good for your health. Yes. (Sorry!)

Her LOVE series is her longest to date, and spans over Holmes&Watson's lives from within a few months of their meeting (in Four Minor Interludes) to four years after His Last Bow (in The Presbury Letters) — that's nearly forty years of being madly in love — each instalment taking place or referring to one or several cases of the ACD books. Her style is stellar, the characterization is excellent (oh, Watson ♥), the plots are always poignant and often heartbreaking, but, more than anything, this is a fantastic story about being in love — about two men who go from near strangers to knowing one another more intimately than anyone, who are madly, desperately, head over heels in love, and who sometimes hurt each other very deeply, but are utterly lost without one another. It's gorgeous. It remains, to this day, one of my Favourite Stories Of All Time.

Title: Other Things to Do After Buying a Cat (AO3); podfic by via_ostiense
Author: BlackEyedGirl
Pairing: Molly/Sally Donovan
Rating: Teen and up
Length: 2575 words
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: It starts because of Sherlock (most things seem to). It's up to them to make it come to more than that.
Reccer's comments:
There aren't many women in Sherlock with which to work, and I don't believe any of them talk to each other. When it's plausible, I'm partial to stories that rectify that error. This is a pleasing, believable fic that brings together two very different women through--in spite of--their shared irritant. As the author says:

This isn't a story. They don't need to rush. It doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to be something they make happen themselves.

Title: Lab Book (also, a fabulous podfic.)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: ~5440 words
Author's summary: "The likelihood of finding a cab on Christmas Eve is fast approaching nil." "So was the likelihood of you kissing me in the middle of the pavement, and yet."
Rating: R
Warnings: sexytiems (as the R rating above likely told you)
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments: I have read this several times now...and I've listened to the podfic maybe 100 or so times? It's a wonderful first-time fic, complete with some John deducing action. How can you go wrong with John getting in some deduction? (And major kudos to [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller for coming up with a logical chain of deduction.) I'm sure that many of you have already read this gem of a story, (read it again!) but if you haven't...well...what are you waiting for?

Title: Two of a Kind (first in the "Being Sherlock" series) (You can find a podfic of the first story here.)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] argyle4eva
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 1,902 words
Author's summary: All the Werewolf!John and Vampire!Sherlock prompts over on [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc_fic seem to have affected my subconscious. The crackbunnies popped out of the mental woodwork last night and gifted me with the prompt, "Sherlock's a vampire; John's a werewolf. Together, they fight crime!" How the hell could I resist writing that, I ask you?
Rating: PG
Warnings: Um...Werewolves and Vampires?
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments: Despite the name, this isn't so much a crossover with "Being Human" as supernatural AU. The stated "crack" level also ebbs and flows during the series, for the record. (I don't think it's really all that cracky, but then...I've really been enjoying all of the supernatural Sherlock AUs that have been popping up, so ymmv.) What can I say? I really love this version of our boys, and the Universe they inhabit. As the series progresses, the worldbuilding just becomes more detailed. I can't wait for more. (Also? I'd really like to podfic the whole series.)

Title: Almost Always and its follow up: Carte Blanche
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ivyblossom
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: ~3400 + ~6800
Author's summary: John, fearing for his life, writes a longhand blog post he can never put online./ John has written an earnest confession when he thought he was near death. But he doesn't die. The confession is in a notebook burning a hole in his pocket. What to do?
Rating: M
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's Comments: The first part is a really lovely character study of John. Kidnapped once more and certain he's going to die this time, he writes down one last blog entry centered on Sherlock and their relationship. His voice is pitch perfect, gritty rather than maudlin. Part 2 describes the fall-out resulting from said entry, after he is rescued by Sherlock after all. I love how Sherlock reacts to what he finds out, and John's valiant attempts to keep the notebook from Sherlock (yeah, right) made me grin!

Podfic by [livejournal.com profile] crinklysolution to be found here! (Both parts in one file.)

Title: The Whore of Babylon Was a Perfectly Nice Girl
Author: out_there
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 32,900
Author's summary: Sherlock walks into a room and takes all the space right out of it. He does the same inside John's head.
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: None.
Verse: BBC
Reccer's comments: This is a beautifully written one-shot teeming with relationship and character development. It's a first time fic, and a John-dealing-with-Sherlock's-past fic, and a protective-older-brother-Mycroft fic, all rolled up with lovely domestic scenes and the quiet sort of in between moments that make up life. This fic gives Sherlock and John a mature relationship in a lot of ways - they both come into it with experience and baggage and grow from there, as opposed to the sense of utter newness that a lot of writers in this fandom go for. It's also just delightfully in character and a joy to read from start to finish.

Title: The Thermodynamics Series:
The Second Law of Thermodynamics, The Art of Negotiation, The Definition of Insanity, The Rules (LJ)
podfic/audiobook read by pandarus/fayjay
Author: corona/[livejournal.com profile] entangled_now
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: over 16,000 words
Author's summary: In which there's no heating and there's a dead owl in Sherlock's bed.
Rating: PG-13 to NC-17
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments:
Sherlock fanon: Sherlock, when he sleeps, tends to collapse on the couch or table or desk in the sitting room. Sherlock's bedroom is a biohazard (may contain owls). Sherlock has no concept of personal space. When convenient or desired, Sherlock invades John's bed. Sherlock and John sleep more soundly together.

I love this work. it's more a single story than a series and should be read through. It's funny and fond and convincingly characterizes John as exasperated and competent and Sherlock as obsessive, determined, and a desirable evil.
It's the first bed-sharing story I read and still my favorite. As a bonus, it begins as a story of a great snow.

Hi!
I expect to make a few runs at recs during the year. I'm starting off with some of the first works I read in Sherlock, most of which also defined trends in fic for that fandom. I'll add in some more recent and maybe less known things as well, for readers who are familiar with other recs lists.

Title: Let You Kiss Me (So Sweet and So Soft) (AO3) on LJ on DW; podfic/audiobook read by pandarus/fayjay
Author: out_there [livejournal.com profile] out_there
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 8666 or 8702
Rating: PG
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's Summary: The first time Sherlock kisses him, John keeps his eyes open, and so does Sherlock, and mostly, he wonders what Sherlock could possibly be up to. There'll be some logic to this. Some ridiculous experiment about body warmth or respiratory rates or testing a new way of picking pockets. Sherlock does the unimaginable for bizarre reasons, but behind it, there's always logic and curiosity. Sometimes, it just takes him a while to explain it to John.
Reccer's comments:
Sherlock fandom has the most gorgeous, sensual, funny, and touching kissing fic I've read anywhere. This is the first one I read and still one of my favorites. Sherlock is charmingly logical and clueless. John is steadfastly reasonable and puzzled. Reader is delighted with them both.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.

The Paradox Series (in order)

Title: An Act of Charity
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 4,032 words
Author's summary: In which what's in his head is never going to get any better, and John is nearly thrown out of his flat. Sherlock POV
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Language, Dark themes, Mental Strangeness
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments: (Podfic of same by [livejournal.com profile] pandarus) This is the beginning of a dark and enthralling series. (Fair warning. These stories contain: insanity (no...really), controlling behaviour, dark stuff, drug use, alternative ways of perceiving, relationships that would be unhealthy outside of this context, and all manner of disturbing things. They are also very, very good. This first story is quite tame compared to the rest.)

Title: The Paradox Suite
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 5,369 words
Author's summary: Being with Sherlock is a series of shocks, but John is game for it anyhow. John POV
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Language, Dark themes, Violence, Sex
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments: (Podfic of same by [livejournal.com profile] pandarus.) This installment looks at John's perception of his world, paradoxes, and and Sherlock. This series switches back and forth between POVs in each installment, so you often get both sides of an event.

Title: The Death and Resurrection of the English Language
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 15,663 words
Author's summary: Wherein the English language dies, Sherlock mourns it, and John revives a dead tongue. Sherlock POV
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Language, Dark themes, Violence, Sex, Mental Illness
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments: (Podfic of same by [livejournal.com profile] pandarus) Wow. Sherlock goes through the mill a bit in this one, but he also gets something he never thought to. You really get a look inside Sherlock's mind in this one.

Title: Entirely Covered in Your Invisible Name
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 15,722 words
Author's summary: Sherlock solves crimes, loses himself, comes back again, and all the while John prays that he never comes to his senses. John POV (A/N - WARNING: this fic paints a picture of a relationship many reasonable people would find crosses the line into disturbingly possessive and/or flirting with actual abuse by way of verbal threats. If verbal threats and brief physical restraint bother you, skip this fic. I'd never fault you for it in the slightest.)
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Language, Dark themes, Violence, Sex, Mental Illness, Drug Use
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments: (Podfic of same by [livejournal.com profile] pandarus) This installment kicks the series up another notch...of tension, worry, and awe. Heed the author's warning.

Title: Moon River Wider than a Mile
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 1290 words
Author's summary: None
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Kissing
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments: A ficlet written for a meme, that nevertheless falls here. A melancholy moment.

Title: New Days to Throw Your Chains Away
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wordstrings
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 14,803 words
Author's summary: When Sherlock decides that he needs to be higher functioning, he simultaneously finds the perfect tutor. Sherlock POV (A/N - WARNING: this fic paints a picture of a relationship many reasonable people would find crosses the line into disturbingly possessive and/or flirting with actual abuse by way of verbal threats. If verbal threats and brief physical restraint bother you, skip this fic. I'd never fault you for it in the slightest. It also has one torture scene, so skip that if you are disturbed by what Sherlock does at the end of Study in Pink.)
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Language, Dark themes, Violence, Sex, Mental Illness, Torture
Verse: Sherlock (TV)
Reccer's comments:...And this is the last of it (so far). I love this series.

(...and I hope that I did all of this correctly.)
