Title: Curse of the Were-Tuna
Author: WhoGroovesOn
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 46,916
Rating: Explicit
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John couldn’t help but feel as though the large tuna beyond the glass was staring at him, which was weird because it’s not like fish had eyelids, they always seemed to be staring at things.

Reccer's comments: The author says this isn't crack, but I think it's a shining gem of the crackfic genre - a premise that seems ridiculous on the surface treated with absolute commitment, until it becomes vivid and real. Take the plunge into this splashy tale of piscine lycanthropy and you'll never see a fishtank quite the same way again.

When wounded army vet John Watson applies for a job as an aquarium security guard, he has no idea what’s about to happen after dark.

This underrated author has a spectacular sense of worldbuilding, and this fic is suspenseful, sexy, vivid, hilarious and surprisingly touching. The plot twists come fast and furious, and I especially love this very inventive version of Moriarty and Moran (who are both female in this story). Fishnappings! Sushi-related threats! Weird and eldritch magic!

Also, it’s set in the London Aquarium and was written long before any pivotal scenes occurred there on the show.

Excerpt: Mycroft was the one who became the killjoy for the tuna pair. A few days after the discovery of their morse code capabilities Mycroft appeared at the window of their tank. Dressed formally as usual, umbrella and all, he sat down facing the glass and proceeded to unfold the paper under his arm.

After floating by a few times trying to read the news, Sherlock darted to John, fin flicking a short message, S - T - O - P / C - O - D - E.

The urgent message made John want to see what Sherlock had read on the paper and managed to catch Mycroft before he folded it away. There on the offered page was a small article questioning “Are Sea Life’s Fish Intelligent?” Below was a little black and white picture of their tank and, sure enough, the black shapes of John and Sherlock within. The paper itself was one of those silly “Are aliens cavorting amongst my sheep?!” types, but still, the fact that someone had written in to say they’d seen the fish at the aquarium doing code and talking to each other in an intelligent manner was unsettling. And who knew who else would see it and start watching a little closer.

Title: We Ain't Born Typical
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pasiphile
Pairing: Moriarty/fem!Moran
Length: 9459 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Violence, racism, sexism, classism
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: They're both outcasts - even if it's for very different reasons - who trust no one but each other, want no one but each other, and it's not so much love as symbiosis.

Jim and Sev, growing up together.
Reccer's comments: This is a really stunning take on Moriarty's childhood, that works really, really well with the slippery, psychopathic BBC version of this character. Little Jim Moriarty is just a little - off from the getgo, and this fic gives him a backstory that explains every little thing about him as an adult. As well-executed as that is, Moriarty isn't the star of this story - it's Sevita Mukherjee, a young Indian girl coming into her own in the threatening and violent world of Aylesbury in the eighties. This reimagining of Sebastian Moran is so brilliantly envisioned that she will take your breath away with her fighting spirit and stark rebellion against the fate projected on her as a brown socially disadvantaged woman. I am someone who rarely reads Moriarty-centric or Moran/Moriarty stories, but pasiphile is one of those writers who will give you a version of these characters that will touch you deeply, whether or not you were interested in them from the start or not. In this version, with one half of the couple genderswapped, pasiphile also shows us just how subversive het stories can be, when executed well.

Title: Daddy loves me the best, also here at at AO3
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren
Pairing: Moran/Moriarty, Moran/Holmes
Length:3,800 words
Rating:NC-17
Warnings: Graphic violence, non-con. Contains unpleasant violence during a sexual act (as does the original).
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:Holmes doesn't understand Jim at all. Not like I do. Not yet.

Reccer's comments: This is one of [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren’s least popular stories. Such a shame for I think it is one of her best. It is a remix of a very dark story, written in [livejournal.com profile] thisprettywren’s unique, bare, powerful language that slashes down at you like strokes from a sword wielded by some ghastly monster.

This is not just a horror story, no, it is a horrid story. And yet, once you start reading you’ll read on breathlessly. There’s no escaping from this dark hellish pit of sadism and mindfuckery that would have the Marquis himself in raptures in his Bastille prison.

The story is told from the POV of Moran who’s torn between his jealousy of and his own fascination for and attraction to Jim’s newest object of desire. To have been abducted by and be the prisoner of Jim is no holiday, to have to contend with Moran’s attempts to seduce Jim into loving him again is a straight descent into hell.

Utterly disturbing, but a marvellous read if you want to explore what Jim’s mind dungeon probably looks like.

Title: If You Can't Move Heaven, Raise Hell
Author: [livejournal.com profile] splix
Pairing: John/Sherlock, Sherlock/male!Adler, John/male!Adler, past Sherlock/female!Trevor, Moriarty/Moran
Length: 83,084 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Dub-con
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: All John Watson wants is a peaceful fortnight's holiday in Cornwall. Fate has other plans.

Reccer's comments: Old enemies, new mysteries, old loves, and new revelations, all come together in one spellbinding story that pours on the angst against the gorgeous backdrop of the Italian Alps. The premise is that an old friend of Sherlock's asks him to investigate some mysterious deaths and the disappearance of a valuable codex from a remote monastery. If it sounds a bit like Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, that's because the author did borrow some elements from it, with full acknowledgment. There are also aspects of ASiB and references to TBB, but it all felt absolutely fresh and I was never sure where the next lead was going to take them. The case was intriguing and completely original, with tie-ins to other canon cases and plenty of opportunity for some good old-fashioned UST and angsting on the part of the lads.

I don't as a rule enjoy genderswap, but maybe because it wasn't Sherlock or John, the genderswapped versions of Adler and Trevor scratched an itch I never knew I had. Ian Adler in particular was a fantastic re-imagining of Irene, with all of the character's morally dubious wiles and charms intact. The author makes a point that Tom Hiddleston was the inspiration for Ian's character, as portrayed in this gif. And now you can't unsee that, can you? You're welcome.

And here's Adler in action:

Ian crossed one leg over the other and folded his arms, peering at Sherlock. "How are you feeling?"

"I can still feel traces of the chemical you drugged me with in my bloodstream, and my arm is sore. Thanks for asking."

"I'm amazed that you threw away such a tantalizing opportunity, Sherlock."

"Must sting to be turned down."

"Well, my door is always open." Ian leant back in the chair. "Do consider it, at least. I'd make you beg for more."

"I don't beg. Never have."

"You would, with me," Ian said softly. "Think about it."

I also have to make special mention of Moriarty, because he steals every scene he's in. He is obsessively controlling, head over heels in love with himself, and six steps ahead of everyone else at any given time. Even the Moriarty/Moran was disturbingly compelling. If you already ship them, this will deliver your fix in spades, but he's not such a major character that if they don't butter your toast, you can skim their scenes and not miss much plot. But don't skim, because their dynamic is completely off the rocker.

There are a few scenes that I would call dub-con, so if questionable power dynamics and motivations in sexual situations make you uncomfortable, best proceed carefully. Other than that, the BDSM is pretty mild and brief, and the criminal violence never gets too gory, although guns and knives do what they were made for and a bit of blood does flow.

Title: parallels and perpendiculars
Author: raven_aorla
Pairing: Jim Moriarty/Q, James Bond/Sebastian Moran, James Bond/Q, Sebastian Moran/Jim Moriarty; James Bond/Eve Moneypenny
Length: 7,878
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC, Skyfall (James Bond)

Author's summary: MI6 has become concerned at the growing influence of a faceless criminal mastermind known to some as Moriarty. Meanwhile, surveillance has indicated that a junior member of his organization, a young mathematical and computer genius named Jim, has been picking up a series of intelligent, small, delicately-featured, and dark-haired young men at bars and clubs over the past few months. Q volunteers to take one for the team.

Reccer's comments: There are a lot of interesting Sherlock/Skyfall crossovers out there, but this one is a bit different. Instead of fitting the two universes together, this one is an AU as far as Sherlock is concerned. Set before A Study in Pink, this is the story of what happens when Moriarty’s attention is caught by a different dark-haired genius. The characterization of both Moriarty and Q are wonderful, and the parallels between Bond and Moran are perfect. Sherlock and Mycroft have some nice cameos, but it’s Moriarty and Q who are the heart of this story.

Title: Twist the Sinews
Author: [livejournal.com profile] canarypaper
Pairing: Holmes/Watson, Moran/Moriarty
Length: 3,274
Rating: R
Warnings: violence
Verse: Ritchie films

Author's summary: John Watson would recognize Sebastian Moran anywhere. (aka Watson and Moriarty's right-hand-man beat the bejesus out of each other.)

Reccer's comments: A chance encounter quickly derails into a BAMF!Watson-fest of epic proportions. What makes this fic so memorable, however, is that it is equal parts a battle of wits, with a strong undercurrent of emotional pain from both Watson and Moran. Gritty action is beautifully interwoven with flashbacks, making both even more poignant. And the last line will make you go like this.

Title: Doomslock AU - Find Some Common Ground
Author: Nympheline
Pairing: John Watson/Sherlock (implied UST), Sebastian Moran/Jim Moriarty
Length: N/A
Rating: R
Warnings: Violence, NSFW images heading parts 1 and 2.
Verse:Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: “You look like you just lost your best friend.”
Reccer's comments: I fell in love with this at the third paragraph. The writing is sparse, brutal and beautiful. Nypheline gives you exactly what you need and nothing else. Her John Watson is a little harder than I'm used to seeing in fandom and that alone is worth reading. I absolutely believe in this post- Reichenbach John, where Sherlock's fall has burned away some of the softer bits to reveal some steel underneath.

I've seen many interpretations of Sebastian Moran, all of them interesting in their own way, but Nypheline's in particular is capitvating. He's not a triggar happy lunatic, empty vessal or John's total opposite. Instead, he and John are alike in the same way that Moriarty and Sherlock are alike. They're operating at just slighly different frequencies and when they overlap there's this great hot electric buzz.

Be sure to read part two and three

Except: John’s wearing a shirt that smells like formaldehyde, smelling pickled even before they step in the bar, and a look of sullen guilt. The stranger doesn’t ask. He watches John hunch into the pub and order ten rounds of the worst gin either of them have ever tasted, and they drink it neat. The stranger pulls out a spent bullet casing from his pocket and twirls it on the bar with his fingers. John’s shoulder aches, his leg aches, his heart aches.

Title: A String of Empty Houses
Author: [livejournal.com profile] manic_intent
Pairing: Sebastian Moran/Jim Moriarty
Length: 10 088 words
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC / ACD book 'verse
Author's summary: Sebastian is busy getting his lip split open when he first meets Jim Moriarty.

Reccer's comments: I first fell into this pairing after reading this rec, and the reccers comments pretty much sums up for me why this pairing works. The Sebastian Moran in "A String of Empty Houses" is now basically my head-canon for the BBC series, and I'm just waiting (hoping/dreaming/praying) for this Sebastian to show up in season 3. An exquisitely written fic with many insightful details (a bunch of it canon, coming from the books) has Sebastian and Jim fleshed out so well, that you basically end up rooting for the bad guys. Sebastian is a beautiful beast, and Jim is beautifully cracked; you will have no difficulty imagining these vignettes of their life running alongside the television episodes up until the Reichenbach Fall. It is also accompanied by a lovely piece of art by dramatis-echo.

Excerpt:

The post-it notes are the worst.

The so-called foremost consulting criminal in the world walks like a cat, and to a mind used to juggling entire illicit empires locks are at best a minor irritation. Often, Sebastian wakes to his SoHo loft littered with tiny, gaudy rectangles. Sometimes they're filled with unrelated quotes drawn from an esoteric range of literature, or arranged in cartoonish smileys. Usually, for some reason that his uncomplicated hunter's mind cannot immediately fathom, they're blank.

Title: Photographs of Dementia
Author: [livejournal.com profile] senket
Pairing: Moriarty x Moran
Length: 11250
Rating: R
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Post-TGG, Sebastian takes care of Jim while he recovers from the explosion. And then things get complicated. Based on this prompt at the meme.

Reccer's comments:

Right, this fic. Actually wait, let me get my woes out of the way first: Noooo, I didn't want to like this pairing and think about how utterly dysfunctional but kinda cute they are, what am I going to do when Reichenbach comes around?!?! Okay, done with that.

Like another commenter said, this fic makes the relationship between Moriarty and Sir Hasn't-Appeared-In-This-Series-Yet Moran look like it could really work. They're like the fucked up antithesis of Sherlock and John, but still distinctly their own people. Even if you don't like/are ambivalent to the pairing, the fic's seriously an amazing read. It shows another side of Jim, one where he's still distinctly wrong in the head but still so human in some ways, and the Sebastian that [livejournal.com profile] senket created is the perfect compliment to our favorite consulting criminal.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
