Title: Toplock Talent Search
Author: [livejournal.com profile] anarfea
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/Irene, Sherlock/Jim/Molly
Length: approx. 25,000 words
Rating: explicit
Warnings: top!Sherlock (the reason the fic exists)
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: “It’s frankly alarming,” said the Sherlock in the fishnet top, “watching you simper and fawn and make puppy eyes over John like a … sad, gay baby.”
Sherlock’s mouth fell open. “I am not a sad gay baby!”
“Yes, you are,” said Irene.
“Well, what is he, then?” sputtered Sherlock. “Splaying his legs open so everyone can see his cock through those trousers. Sitting there leering at the rest of us like some sort of superior … Dark fuck prince.”

Currently a WIP. Last updated July 2015. There should be one more chapter according to the author. However, as chapter three to five are pretty much stand alone's you can really go ahead and read!

Reccer's comments: This fic is proof of the human mind’s remarkable talent to turn something vile into something hilarious. Written in response to the vagaries imposed upon last year’s 221B con by a this fic has the show’s characters discuss fanfic, gender politics, sexual roles, ship wars, and fandom, as they search for the perfect incarnation of Toplock.

The author masterfully plays with tropes and head!canons as exploited in the series by Moffat and Gatiss, by fanfic writers (the author included) and readers and shows that the pen, especially when wielded with a humour that manages to cast everyone in a satirical light, truly is the strongest weapon ever invented.

The fic heads off with lots of clever banter flying around the living room. Anthea presides and has a hard time keeping the various characters in their respective incarnations in check. We get to meet DarkFuckPrince!Sherlock, GayBaby!Sherlock, JustTransport!Sherlock, Angry!John (well, he doesn’t get laid, obviously), Saint!John and BAMF!John, Virgin!Sherlock and all these incarnations, traipsing around 221B’s living room together, are totally IC. As are Irene, Mycroft, Anthea, Mrs Hudson, Jim and Molly and even Sebastian Moran. Because no fic featuring Jim is complete without a truly creepy Moran in the background. Fie Moftiss.

Once Anthea has waved her magic wand and decided upon the various pairings we follow those to the rooms allotted them for yet more talk, debate, argument, conference, exchange, review, conversation, consideration, dialogue, consultation, seminar, discourse, deliberation, symposium, colloquy, confabulation not to mention examination, investigation, analysis, scrutiny and dissection that will have you screaming with laughter and chuckling over so much cleverness. Then in each chapter the whole delicious concoction gets topped off with some scorchingly-hot sex, with Sherlock topping of course. Yes, even GayBaby!Virgin!Sherlock gets to do the topping.

What really blew me away in this fic however is the encounter in chapter four, between JustTranpost!Sherlock and a beautifully brave and tender Irene. Even if you don’t read the rest of the fic, read this chapter at least for the wonderful insight into their relationship. You won’t regret it.

Title: Stumbleine
Author: wiggleofjudas
Pairing: Molly/Richard Fox [James Moriarty]
Length: 1,552
Rating: M for violence
Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Canonical Character Death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: A re-telling of Mr. Fox/The Robber Bridegroom in the key of BBC Sherlock.

Reccer's comments: No S3 Spoilers
Death-Tender Molly Hooper shines in these seven 221Bs set in the fairytale-inspired 'verse The Snow Queen. This part of the series can be understood without having read the previous installments, but I do urge you to enjoy them to obtain a fuller view of this gorgeous, terrifying, yet intensely human world.

It can be difficult to do Molly justice, to either make her ineffective and uninteresting, or to swing wildly to an opposite extreme in an effort to "fix" her perceived faults, thereby obliterating the traits that make Molly an engaging character. But in masterful hands, that balance between awkwardness and a core of understated strength is maintained, as Molly reacts to what she finds in her fiancé's ancestral home:

Molly’s skin prickles panic-hot and goes numb, numb. She can’t take her eyes from the hand (her age; more elegant).

If I have to, she thinks, her mind a bloody, beating thing recalling those last, hardest lessons at the death-tender’s cabin: I will. If.

Richard buries the blade in the table and storms up the stairs, lips all disgust. Doesn’t see her.

Never, Molly thinks, saw her.

Before she leaves: her work. She hasn’t time for the science of it (though how she would like to, how good it would feel to find the whats and hows and how-manys, to make a record), but the ritual: that, yes, she can do.

She starts at the table. Lays the hand with the body, rummages in the pouch at her waist, clinks through vials ’til she finds what she wants: distillations of ivy, aloe, yew. Three drops on the forehead, smudged once with her thumb; rites she mouths quiet as she can; relief when she feels the soul rest, release.

On to the next. Again. Until, when she whispers the words that let her hear what’s held back, there is peace.

Throughout the story she will do what must be done (and more), quietly, competently, shunning the easy path.

The prose is spare and poetic in its approach to rhythm and pacing. This adds to the otherworldly character of the 'verse, which has the folk ballad's economy and darkness. Best read in a well-lit room with a valiant tomcat or steadfast terrier by your side.

Title: The Beast of Baskerville
Author: faviconMildredandbobbin / [livejournal.com profile] mildred_bobbin
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Harry/Clara, others
Length: 74,550 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 15th Century/fairy tale AU. An invalided John Watson comes to the isolated village of Baskerville seeking shelter with his sister, only to find himself embroiled in a grisly murder. As the villagers point to a local werewolf legend, the odd but brilliant friar, Brother Sherlock, disagrees, and soon he and John are on the the trail of a very human murderer. As the killer takes another victim, fear and suspicion grips the village, culminating in the arrival of Inquisitor, Friar James Moriarty, who proves more terrible than any supernatural beast could ever be.

Reccer's comments: [livejournal.com profile] mildred_bobbin has written several great fics in this fandom, but this is definitely my favorite so far. It's a medieval AU which is a melange of the first two series of Sherlock, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, Janet Lewis's The Wife of Martin Guerre and the 2011 Red Riding Hood movie. It's a tightly plotted, well-paced ensemble piece, veering away from the usual main supporting characters of Lestrade and Mycroft to give larger parts to rarer characters such as Harry, Clara, Henry Knight, Robert Frankland, and Louise Mortimer. Irene as the Mother Abbess is a pointed provocation, and Molly and Moriarty shine in their respective roles as midwife and Inquisitor too, but the real stars are, of course, Brother Sherlock as a keen-eyed Franciscan friar and Master Watson as a peasant foot soldier recently returned from Granada (not only a nod to Granadaverse, but also a real war waged in the late 1400's).

The driving force of the story is the series of horrific deaths plaguing the small village of Baskerville. A werewolf is the supposed culprit, but Sherlock sees a mortal hand and sets out to gather his evidence, with John's help.

Excerpt contains mild gore... )

One thing I thought the author did really well was to make use of the beliefs and superstitions of the era, especially the quotes from the Malleus Maleficarum at the start of every chapter. There are also nice period details for flavour, but it's not so overflowing with references and research that it feels like reading an academic treatise.

The secondary plot is the relationship between Sherlock and John. Due in part to Sherlock's vows and in part to the societal attitude toward homosexuality, it's obviously not an easy road, but I thought the author handled it with respect and not at all in a sensationalist manner. I thought it was a brave move to cast Sherlock as a truth-seeker and rational thinker who nonetheless takes his vows seriously and does try to adhere to the good core of the Church's teachings. He is in fact a heretic for the time period, but not because he is actually an atheist or humanist (or at least his character didn't come across that way to me).

Finally, the story has been illustrated throughout by some very talented artists: [livejournal.com profile] kikislasha, BlueStoneArcher, and khorazir. The art alone would be worth a rec.

In addition to the character death warning (neither of the two leads, but multiple canon characters), there is torture, gore, and mention of non-con. I also really want to add a special warning for
the murder of unborn children
because I think it could be quite upsetting for some readers.

Title: Restless Things
Author: [info]redhandsredribbons
Pairing: John/Sherlock, Jim/Molly
Length: 35,879 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Extreme violence, non-canon character death, dub-con
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: John Watson and Molly Hooper are each paid a visit after Sherlock's fall. John, a visit from a very alive Sherlock, who's investigating the bizarre murder that's drawn him back to London. Molly, a visit from a very alive Moriarty, who only plans on a quick little interrogation—until he wonders if Molly's not quite as boring as she seems. (Johnlock first time fic/case fic.)

Reccer's comments: I almost didn't read it because of the Jim/Molly pairing, but I can't turn down anything with Johnlock in it, so I gave it a try, and I am so glad I did. This has something for just about everyone. You want Johnlock feels? This has Johnlock feels. You also like het? This has het. Do you want casefic with your smut? This has case. And smut. Can you not get enough creepy!unbalanced!Jim? This has creepy!unbalanced!Jim. Are you a fan of Molly? This not only has Molly, but BAMF!Molly, which. Obviously. There is even oblique Mycroft/Lestrade, although I don't want to get your hopes up on that count because it's really just a brief mention. Still.

Right, let's back up. First, a brief synopsis. As the summary says, both Sherlock and Jim survived the Fall, and both have come back to pick up their sidekicks to continue their 'game'. In Sherlock's case, it's not surprising that he's come for John, but no one was expecting Jim to choose Molly. Not even Jim. But things – and people – are not always as they seem...

Excerpt contains unrealized threat of violence )

I loved Jim in this. Well, not that I was rooting for him or anything. He is completely bonkers. And creepy and evil and utterly manipulative and I gobbled up every scene with him.

The John/Sherlock part was a slow build-up to an eminently satisfying resolution. I appreciated that John was just as much of a dick as Sherlock, and not just the wrongfully slighted, long-suffering, secretly pansexual, all-round do-gooder. The banter between the two of them was the perfect blend of aggression and affection. And the pillow talk at the end, OMG! I was giggling so hard.

If you read this at the AO3 link, there are several wonderful illustrations embedded (this was written for the 2012 [livejournal.com profile] johnlockbigbang). However, they are spoilerish, so you may want to refrain from scrolling through the entire work before you read. Also, while we're on warnings, see how I put 'extreme violence' up there under the official warnings for this rec? Yeah, there's a reason for that. There was one scene that I couldn't even read all the way through. I got about halfway and said, 'Okay, I get it, the guy's toast,' and skipped to the next page. There's also torture (less graphic, but still present) and gore and basically a huge list of trigger warnings at the top of the fic, so just be aware.

The ending was another one of those stroke-of-genius things, both the main climax and then the little extra epilogue-type scene tacked on at the very end, where I just sat there for several minutes afterwards nodding and going, 'Yeah. Yeah. I can totally see that. Sequel please?'

Title: In Haunted Attics series
Author: faviconcocaineboy
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 52,803
Rating: hard R - NC-17
Warnings: past rape/non-con, mentions of underage rape [see author's warnings for each chapter/part in notes]
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Post TGG. Sherlock and John's relationship is new, still in its beginning stages. Sherlock struggles with intimacy because of which is difficult to get close to. Any hope John has of learning from Sherlock's past partners's mistakes is a lost cause due to Sherlock 'deleting' all the information. But just because Sherlock can't remember doesn't mean it's not around somewhere...

Reccer's comments: This is a very hard-hitting series, dealing with some very serious issues in both John and Sherlock's past. The writer incorporates canon references from both the books and the television series but makes it their own by creating a detailed past that effects John and Sherlock's relationship "today" as well as their interactions with other canon and OC characters (Sherlock's drug use and past sexual encounters play a big role). The author also uses actual images of mentioned notebooks, case notes, misc. notes, and pages from mentioned books/articles in the story which is a nice touch.
Each part of the series can be read alone but together they build a very complex and dark but still fun to read story. I read through from the first word till the last last night and I only put it down when my eyes started closing against my will, haha. If you like a darker, angst-ridden casefic, this is definitely one you don't want to pass over.

Reccer's comments: Anything written by gyzym is guaranteed to be absolutely astounding, and this is no exception.  It's the story of Molly Hooper's adult life and the biggest secret she ever kept.  She's a fully-fleshed character, real and brave and human, and every note is pitch-perfect.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] gyzym.
Pairing: Molly/Lestrade (main), Molly/Moriarty, unrequited Molly/Sherlock
Length: 56,000 words.
Rating: NC-17.
Warnings: No major warnings. See the author's notes.
Verse: BBC!Sherlock.
Author's summary: In which Molly Hooper gets a job, gets a degree, breaks a heart, has her heart broken, falls in love, keeps a secret, saves a life, runs a morgue, falls apart, pulls it together, and finds exactly what she didn't know she was looking for—not necessarily in that order.

Reccer's comments: Spoilers for S2. This follows Molly from her childhood to the post-Reichenbach era; it fleshes her character out marvellously, expands on the few canon glimpses we have been given of her life in canon, and develops her relationship with Lestrade in a fantastic, thoroughly believable way. Their friendship, the UST between them, Molly's issues with Jim and with Sherlock, Lestrade's marriage, what happens after the end of The Reichenbach Fall, everything is played out in full detail, and the outside look it provides us over the show's events and on John and Sherlock's storylines, when crossed with Molly's, is very interesting. It's a long, marvelous story, and a must-read for anyone who likes Molly.

mods: I've clicked on the lestrade/mycroft tag by mistake, and now it won't edit itself out, no matter which way I try. is there any way it could be taken out?

Title: The Anatomist (also available on AO3 here)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Pairing: Molly Hooper/Jim Moriarty, Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 24,253 words
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Graphic violence, language, disturbing themes (specifically mild, non-graphic incest if you choose to read it that way), character death (Jim Moriarty). Spoilers for all of S1.
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with hints of canon.
Author's summary: "You’re not the only one to enjoy a good murder. There’s others out there just like you – except you’re just a man. And they’re so much more than that." Jefferson Hope, A Study in Pink // When they are children, Moriarty is a game. A story they tell only to each other, in whispers. Jim and Molly Moriarty, from the beginning.

Reccer's comments: While a good many of you will probably already be familiar with The Anatomist, I hope it's new and exciting for the rest of you. Frankly, I'm flabbergasted that this has not shown up here yet but I have checked, and re-checked, and then checked again, and no one has recced this story. For a while, it appeared to be a WIP, but [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis now lists it as complete. Even when the last part was called 4/5, the shifting, non-linear structure made it so much less frustrating to read than your average WIP. Basically, it seemed like it could be complete at any part, and was always wonderfully satisfying despite being "unfinished".

This is, without a doubt, my favorite Mollyarty story. Molly is fascinating and, to me at any rate, entirely plausible in this.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
