Title: He Was a Friend of Mine
Author: SinceWhenDoYouCallMe_John
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, John Watson/Alma Watson
Length: 38,387 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Suicidal ideation, infidelity
Verse: BBC Sherlock/Brokeback Mountain crossover
Author's summary: Sherlock presses his nose into my hair and inhales. “Told myself the whole way here we wasn’t gonna get into this again,” he says low. His breath moves soft against my scalp, and his words rumble deep into my bones. It sounds like the open sky throwing wind against the boulders up on Baker, rattling the thin walls of the tent with the rushing force of the mountain. I hum. I don’t believe him for a second – steppin’ out of his gleaming white Ford back in Signal with his best shirt on and his curls all combed lookin’ up at me like he just took a breath after five years of holding it. I know because I did the same.

Reccer's comments: Stunned silence. What. This author. What. This author writes better than Annie Proulx. I just. ??

Okay. Trying to put together words coherently here. This is a fusion with Brokeback Mountain, and the author says at the beginning that they “borrowed heavily” from Proulx’s short story and the screenplay. So when I started reading the first paragraph I thought, yeah, okay, they’ve copied all this description stuff from Proulx to set the mood. I mean because look at this:

There’s a place up round near Bighorn where the little streams all crisscross each other like a handful of grass tossed down onto hot summer pavement. You can walk alongside the water in places where boots and hooves and moccasins and bare feet and whatever other goddamn footwear there is have been trampling for hundreds of years, and nobody pays you no congratulations for finding those paths.

Poetry, right? This author has obviously won numerous writing awards, right? But. Then there’s a link to Proulx’s story at the end and I checked and this is all this fic author. 100%. I went so far as to google those phrases because good goddamn. This fic is the only hit in the entire internet. The only hit for the handful of grass on hot summer pavement and no congratulations for finding the paths. And it just goes on like that for 38K words. Yes, there are a few lines of dialogue that are cribbed but that’s really about it as far as I can tell. So. Maybe they have won writing awards. Worth reading just for that. But then there is the story.

The plot largely follows that of the movie but there are a lot of deviations, some minor and some major, as Sherlock and John’s characters and back stories meld with those of Ennis and Jack. It was a tricky line to walk, I think, to bring Sherlock and John as we know them to the rural American west of the 1970s and 80s, including the speech patterns. But they are definitely there, with John’s anger and struggle between wanting outward normalcy while craving adventure, and Sherlock’s paramount loneliness and underappreciated brilliance seeking an appropriate outlet but getting sidetracked in violence and illicit substances.

For those who are afraid of how the movie ended, check out the “eventual happy ending” tag. ;) Eventual being the key word here because believe me, you will go through that box of tissues on the way. We are taken on a lifelong journey that hurts with every step as the two men drift between moments of happiness with each other. The characters may be fictional, but their emotions are made real through the telling, and that to me is the mark of a truly great story.

Pairing: Mary Morstan/John Watson, John Watson/OFC, Sherlock Holmes
Length: 4613 words
Rating: Teen and up

Verse: ACD Canon
Author's summary: A Watsonian little story about gender, friendship, and textual uncertainty.

Character death (and/or undeath) as you'd expect from a book-canon context. No explicit sex or violence. Demonstrative of my archives fetish.

Reccer's comments: Some time ago, I read an essay suggesting the possibility of Watson being a woman but it being covered up because of societal norms of that time. (I don't remember the name of said essay, or I would rec that as well.) A little earlier tonight, I saw a recommendation for the aforelinked fic on my Tumblr dash.

I love what Circadienne did here. The issue of Watson's gender identity is there, but then it isn't. Watson just is. I also love that this was presented in an archival format.

Title: Thirteen Dances (Or, The Doctor Dances)
Author: Knackorcraft
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 17,544 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Written in response to this kink meme prompt: "John is a great dancer: we're talking all types. Not only is he able to pop and lock it, he's got some great ballet technique. He was best at lifting / holding girls." Thirteen chapters, thirteen dances, interwoven in two parallel tracks: John's past and his present. And maybe his future, too. (I do love a happy ending with a bit of smut.)

Reccer's comments: This is the quintessential fic for those who wanted to see that scene of Sherlock teaching John to waltz for the wedding. Only in this fic (written prior to series 3), it's John who teaches Sherlock. To tango. And yes, it's everything you hoped for and more.

John is the ultimate BAMF here, wowing all the lads and ladies with his moves both on and off on the dance floor. It's all done with complete aplomb and understatement, though, never turning John into some kind of flamboyant dancing wunderkind but keeping him grounded and quietly confident, making his dancing talents as natural a part of him as his gun-wielding or jumper-wearing. We get a broad survey of John's life through dance, from ballet lessons as a child to high school disco parties and a brief stint as the star of a viral YouTube video from his time in the army.

And woven through it all is the stomach-fluttering, throat-tightening, heart-stuttering metaphorical dance that Sherlock and John engage in as they feel their way toward each other's arms. And that tango scene. ;)

Title: Dust and Ashes
Author: Atiki
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 10,000 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Suicidal ideation, minor character deaths, pet death
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: John becomes used to it. If he’s perfectly honest with himself, he’s become used to it a long time ago. At night, things are different. The darkness tickles his skin and the cemetery is the loudest place in the world and he tastes dust and iron on his tongue when he hears them talk. In the dark, the bones whisper.

And sometimes John whispers back.

Reccer's comments: This is something a little different. In this AU (not series 3 compliant), John can hear the bones of dead people, and he can talk back to them as well. It makes for an intriguing, if a bit macabre, premise. What makes it truly unique, is that the most interesting character in the story is Sherlock's skull. Per the author's tag, the skull is a bit of an asshole, and yet ends up being the impetus John needs to face his fears and acknowledge his feelings.

The story follows John from childhood all the way through Sherlock's Fall and eventual Return. The language evokes within the reader all of the emotions that John is feeling as he deals with his mixed blessing/curse. A highlight for me is a scene during which John puts his unique skill to use in solving a crime before Sherlock does.

A warning: there is some suicidal ideation here, and at the very start of the story there is a pet death that may be upsetting.

A lovely story. Here is a sneak peek:

Title: The Queen of Gondal Series
Author: AJHall
Pairings: SH/JW, SH/OFC, JW/OFC, Mycroft/OFC, Lestrade/Donovan, Lestrade/OFC
Length: approx. 204,000 words
Rating: from teenage to explicit
Warnings: see below
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The dying King of Gondal lays a solemn trust on John Watson, court physician; at all costs to keep the fourteen year-old Crown Princess Charis out of the clutches of the corrupt Heir of Gondal. Which means arranging her marriage to Sherlock, heir to the neighbouring throne of Gaaldine, Gondal's traditional enemy. John escorts the Crown Princess to her wedding, acutely aware of the pressure of history and unspoken - unspeakable - secrets which he had thought buried forever.

AJHall’s introduction to the series: This is a quasi-historical AU of the BBC Sherlock series set (more or less) in three fantasy kingdoms devised by the Bronte children.
The time period is roughly the late seventeenth century and readers should bear in mind that this saga contains the doings of a set of supremely dysfunctional more-or-less European Royal families steeped in the "divine right of kings" ideology of monarchy, filtered through an early nineteenth century Romantic/Gothick sensibility and then depicted using the freedom of expression afforded by the early twenty-first century internet.
Furthermore, if the Greek myths contemplated it, some member of the Royal houses of Gondal, Angria or Gaaldine has probably put it into practice somewhere.

Reccer's comments: One of the perpetual mysteries of the Sherlock fandom, and one I fear even the world’s only consulting detective will never be able to solve, is this series lack of recognition and applause. For this series contains everything to lift a girl’s heart and have her enthralled for days on end.

Imagine a swashbuckling, dashingly attractive Crown Prince who’s too clever for his own good and eternally testing the patience of his brother, the brooding crafty King who has to slalom between his Council and the eternal threat for war. Add an ever patient, loving battle-hardened doctor who has sworn to obey his liege lord even though doing so nearly breaks his heart.

Is that enough romance for you? Then take treason, double-dealing, life at court, grandiosity, magnificent balls, conspiring abbesses, golden-hearted whores, gossipy and cunning landladies, murder and mayhem, loyalty to the death and every trick the human heart is capable of and you’ll have an inkling of the contents of the fic for starters.

And the language! Oh my god, the wildly imaginative language that soars like the wild peaks of the mountains that separate the rival Kingdoms, speaks the flattering language of court officials, and is so wholly IC when dealing with the series' main protagonists. There’s humour as well, lots of it, both in the situations depicted and in the telling.

To round it all off all the OCs are just perfect, from the Crown Princess Charis herself to her mother Felicia (my favourite OC by far) and the lovely woman on whose breast King Mycroft can lay his weary head at night. The story is told from various POVs throughout, both Sherlock’s and John’s, as well as from that whole host of OCs who serve to shed new light on the characters we know so well.

What more can I say to make you sit down and start reading this? Perhaps you should just do so. You won’t regret it, I’m sure. Not one little bit.

Title: A Substitute for a Hatstand
Author: faviconTheRimmerConnection
Pairing: Watson/OFC, Holmes/Watson
Length: 23,829 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Character death (but not H or W)
Verse: Granada
Author's summary: Sequel to 'An Improvement on a Hatstand'. Watson and Holmes seem to have settled down into a managable relationship, albeit one that is not always satisfactory from Watson's point of view. However, Sherlock is rumbling on about things that cannot be true, and Watson has never been able to resist Holmes, even when he knows full well that he's being deliberately aggravating.

Reccer's comments: This is the second in a three-part trilogy, but you don't absolutely need to read the first part to understand what's going on. There are a few references to things, but the main plot of this part is self-contained, which also means there is no need to be anxious about waiting for the third part to be completed (it is a WIP as of this posting).

The thing that made this fic stand out to me is the fact that Watson gets married … to his second wife, who is not Mary. There's some debate amongst scholars of the ACD stories as to how many wives Watson actually had, with suggestions ranging from one to six. Interestingly, this is rarely treated in fan fiction except perhaps in passing. And when one of Watson's wives is given a larger role, it is nearly always Mary. This is the fic that breaks that pattern, fleshing out Watson's proposed second wife, a widow named Caroline Deynforth.

One of the things that I love about the dynamic between the main characters is the level of sheer pigheadedness of both Holmes and Watson. They are both so messed up and do their worst to each other when they are trying to do their best. Holmes and Watson have been involved in a romantic relationship with each other since Mary's death at some point before this story begins. However, Holmes - believing he is acting for Watson's own good - all but bullies him into re-marrying.

Excerpt... )
And that is where the fun really begins. Well, I say fun...

The story is heart-wrenching as everyone tries their very best to play their part and do what is right, but every move is burdened by the choices that led them to that point. Greatness of heart is displayed by all, but it doesn't seem possible to resolve in a way that will leave everyone happy. Perhaps it is even impossible to resolve in a way that will leave anyone at all happy.

Title: The Blog of Eugenia Watson [podfic]
Author: faviconMad_Lori
Podficcer: faviconlunchee
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: approx. 10 hours in three files
Rating: G (as posted, but due to language and themes this may not be appropriate for all ages)
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 'The blog of Eugenia Watson' by madlori read aloud. I like to think of this not so much as a blog but as the first draft of my inevitably best-selling memoirs. My Life In an Unconventional Family. How unconventional? Well, I live with my divorced parents and my dad's husband. How's that for starters? Trust me, it gets weirder. My name is Eugenia Watson, but you can call me Genie. I'm sixteen. This is my life.

Reccer's comments: The fic this is based on, The Blog of Eugenia Watson by Mad_Lori, was already recced here, but this podfic deserves a rec all on its own, as I feel it's one of the classic podfics of the fandom.

What I love so much about this podfic is that lunchee's voice matches the character of Eugenia so well. It takes no effort whatsoever to hear the 16-year-old narrator in the accent and intonation. It's not like listening to someone read a story. It's like hearing Eugenia speaking of her first-hand experiences as the youngest member of this unorthodox family.

Even if you've already read the fic, hearing it brought to life like this makes all of the stories and emotions so much more vivid. You can hear her anguish over Sherlock being injured; her matter-of-fact acceptance of her mother bringing 'corpse stench' into the flat, tempered by the obligatory teenage whinging; her starry-eyed indulgence of her father and step-father cuddling; and her occasional mild disgust when glimpsing them doing anything more.

Definitely download this for your next trip, and enjoy the story without eye fatigue or motion sickness. ;)

(P.S. The underage sexuality tag is for a mention only, nothing explicit, which is why I haven't included it as a warning.)

Length: 1,944
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: John meets Mummy. They have quite a few mutual interests, as it turns out.

Reccer's comments: This fic is both hot and hilarious. John puts up with so much from Sherlock and Mycroft that it's a real treat to see them be discomfited for a change; Sherlock's indignation and Mycroft's quiet horror here are things of beauty.

“John, please try not to flirt with my mother. It’s disturbing.”

“I’m being nice, Sherlock. Just because you don’t know the meaning of the word.”

“Ugh,” said Sherlock. “Well don’t do it in front of me. It makes me nauseous.”

“She is pretty hot, though,” John said contemplatively.

“Not! Listening!”

Mycroft, ahead of them, faltered only slightly on the top step.

Title: The Steadfast Tin Watson
Author: faviconwhat_alchemy
Pairing: Sherlock/John, past John/OFC
Length: 3,964 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: When the fairies left, they took their stories with them. But they left the characters behind.

Reccer's comments: Sherlock is a fairy tale. Literally. No, really literally. In this AU, the entire world is populated with incarnations of characters of myth, legend, and fairy tale. The Velveteen Rabbit, Loki, Baba Yaga, the figures in the tales of the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Andersen... all jerked abruptly out of their stories by some Deus Ex Machina and fumbling along in their new roles as therapists and doctors, policemen and detectives.

Ella is silent for a torturous moment during which John barely contains a scream. She has always refused to tell him where she is from, even who wrote her. She always says, “this isn’t about me, John,” and makes him tell her about how tin feels, transmogrified into bone. Or rather, how he feels about the whole odious process.

“Some of us are luckier,” she says finally. “Some of us were porcelain dolls growing dusty on shelves until the right little girl came along, and some of us were threadbare velveteen, so well-loved our biggest problem was how our stuffing always came out. But you’re a soldier. In this life and the last. That’s hard, John. And I’m trying to make it easier, not harder. Please meet me halfway.”

John shifts his gaze out the window. He wonders how everything can be so cheery and green now that the fairies have left the world.

I found this a particularly apt AU, given the fairy tale motifs already present in the series. And the figures which the author has chosen for John and Sherlock are so perfect, both for their back story and for how they see and define themselves. The best part of the story for me, though, was how they were able to re-define themselves without losing their essential selves, in effect taking over and writing their own stories with the framework they have been left.

This is really a fantastic piece of writing, and even though it's short, it reminds me of a piece of advice everyone's probably heard in a creative writing class: a story should be as long as it needs to be. A perfect gem of a fic.

Pairing: John/Sherlock
Rating: Teen
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Warnings: None
Author's Summary: John finds someone to help him with a personal experiment. Surely, if he's careful, Sherlock won't find out.
Also: kiwi fruit, a stolen antique agate-inlay dagger, peach-scented candles, the reinvention of the hug, an experiment involving blue balls, and Sherlock pondering whether the eyes really are the windows of the soul.

Reccer's Comments: Humorous and a little fluffy, this is a great 'should we/shouldn't we' fic.  FYI, don't let the excerpt fool you: not really a case fic.

Excerpt:
"I almost hate to ask what kind of case this is," he said lightly.

"The most sordid. The wife had lovers, the husband had lovers, the lovers had lovers, even the dog has a lover..."

"The dog?"

"Oh, I saw the puppies and the bitch in the neighbor's garden. He may think he's kept it a secret from everyone, but not from me."

Pairing: John Watson/"Anthea"
Length: 4360 words approx.
Rating: Teen and up/PG-13
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: After the Pool Incident, as she's been mentally calling it in her head, Mycroft assigns her to monitoring his brother's website, which is how she finds herself reading through his boyfriend's blog.

Reccer's comments: Entirely from "Anthea"'s point of view this is a good humoured, totally believable story of how John and "Anthea" get together. Starting at the end of the events of "The Great Game" they keep encountering each other through kidnappings and emails! This "Anthea" is so much fun and this story has what is probably the best and most interesting explanation I've seen for her reactions to John during "A Study in Pink" and the fake name. Her relationship with the Holmes brothers is also fun to read!

Excerpt from "Anthea"'s blog:

like rumpelstiltskin but better (saymyname) wrote,
oh god i'm going to get fired
I just put sleeping pills in my boss's tea. He's snoring on his desk now (I moved the papers out of the way so he won't drool on them).
I am so fired....
crisis averted
M slept for 14 hours and when he woke up he had an ~epiphany~, and after he finished making phone calls and dictating notes and everything he said to me, "Thank you, Victoria. That was quite refreshing."

Pairing: John Watson/OFC
Length: 27,714 words
Rating: general audiences
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Taken out of context, John Watson leads a terrifying life. You have to wonder what those poor women he dates think of it, especially if John decides to try keeping one away from Sherlock, and Sherlock decides that it'd be best if he could get rid of her. After all, Mycroft's taught him a thing or two about removing potential 'problems.'

Reccer's comments: Sam's friends say she needs to find "some perfectly ordinary bloke" to date.

John Watson seems so nice and normal. So why do strange, and sometimes dangerous, things keep happening when she's with him? Why do people keep warning her off him with mysterious innuendos? Samantha's friends think he must be a spy. Or maybe a mobster. And who is that creepy, dark-haired man stalking him? Still, he does seem awfully nice. And it's interesting. And sort of exciting.

First of all, this Samantha Carter is not that Samantha Carter. A half point off for lack of originality. Which leaves 99.5 points for thrills, chills, right-on characterizations, a real plot, laugh-out-loud funny, and all round adorableness. Plus snarky commentary from Sam's gal pals.

Author's summary: Nobody Raise Their Voices: In which John has a nice date, disturbs his flatmate, and makes it up to him. When the Sky is Full of Zeroes and Ones: In which Sherlock does his times tables and returns a favor. Having Infinity: In which John goes on holiday, dances with a pretty girl, and resolves a certain situation with his flatmate. Between Thought and Expression Lies a Lifetime: In which Sherlock solves a case, feeds some swans, and has a go at domesticity.

Reccer's comments: I’ve added the title for each story in front of the author’s summary. The first three stories from this series were some of the first Sherlock fics I read so they are quite special to me. The last story was added in August. Together they offer a sexy, thoughtful look into the development of John and Sherlock’s relationship. (Do you see a theme for my recs? *smile* I can’t help myself.) Sophiahelix’s John is both brazen and unsure, and very hot. His scene with Sherlock in the first story…*fans self* The twist is that instead of John working his Sherlock feelings out with a woman away from the flat, here he brings her home while Sherlock listens (among other things). The pleasure for the reader is watching Sherlock’s brain waffle between denying, needing, and accepting his desire for John. The writer balances sexual tension and heat, an edge of angst, and quiet moments believably, and John and Sherlock’s characterizations are spot-on. This is a great series for fans that enjoy reading the first steps in John and Sherlock’s physical and emotional relationship.

Author's summary: John Watson thinks Sherlock Holmes should admit that he, Watson, is more of an expert on sex than Sherlock is. But Sherlock refuses to concede the point. He comes up with an experiment plan that will resolve the issue. The results will determine who wins the prize. But sometimes even the best thought-out scientific study has unexpected consequences.

Reccer's comments: Why should you read this fic? *smile* Because it’s just flat out fun! If this is crack, it’s of the highest grade. The plot is outrageous and hilarious, yet you’ll completely recognize John and Sherlock. Their strong friendship is the core underneath it all. When the quiz forms for ranking their performances started appearing, I was laughing so hard, I couldn’t breathe. The author has thought of everything in this wild romp. She also manages to take us on an unexpected emotional journey, because for all the craziness that ensues, there is a depth of feeling between John and Sherlock. (And when VulnerableSherlock shows his face, he slays me.) Do not let the tags for other partners with John and Sherlock dissuade you. The heart of this story explores John and Sherlock’s desires and realizations for one another. (The only downside I can see about reading this fic is that if you are like me, you may wish you had been a candidate participating in their experiment!)

Reccer's comments: I’m amazed no one has recommended roane here yet! This is the first work I read by roane and is still a favorite of mine. It’s a series of three stories Displacement, Sublimation, and Denial. Although initially there is a pairing with John and someone else, it’s really not, and this is why I enjoyed it. *grin* The series is a steamy, first-time look at the John/Sherlock dynamic told from both their POVs. The reader watches John as he struggles with his feelings and desires for Sherlock and the confusion this brings. There is a scene with a blue scarf...guh. Go read. Then read the rest of her stories! (If the show’s writers decided to give John a significant other [please don’t] as a way to cope with his grief, I’d vote for roane’s Maggie. I know no one could replace Sherlock, but I do enjoy watching John wrestle with his emotions, especially over Sherlock.)

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
