Title: Love Letters
Author: helicidae
Pairing: Jim Moriarty/John Watson, John Watson & Sherlock Holmes
Length: 39,260 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Everything. All of it. There is not a thing that should not be warned for.
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Dearest John... Moriarty sends love letters. When it's over you'll have your own blood and my come in your mouth and on your lips, John, and that'll be the most beautiful sight in the world.

Reccer's comments: Horror. Horrific horrible horror.

Here is the full list of author tags: Mind Games, Bloodplay, Cannibalism, Child Death, Child Torture, Forced Self-harm, Minor Character Death, Necrophilia, Non-con, Body Modification, Rape, Torture, Sadism, Sexual Violence, Starvation, Extreme Underage, Horror, One-Sided Relationship

Moriarty is John's stalker. Almost every horrible thing is an exercise in imagination. Somehow, that makes it worse - there are places people can go in their heads that it might be hard to sell them going in a fic that stayed in character.

There are not enough capital "D"s and colons in the world to express my reaction to this as I read it. Well-regarded published horror does go this dark, but somehow it was just not something I was prepared for in fan writing.

The development of John and Sherlock's relationship throughout is a marvel of authorial ... something. Deftness? Delicacy? John is trying to keep a secret, and Sherlock is trying to uncover it, and it's never entirely certain how their friendship will survive the onslaught of Moriarty's obsession. (This is an S2 canon divergence, and takes Reichenbach a different direction.)

This story was written for the kink meme; the AO3 version is somewhat amended. The effect in the end is a little different, but probably not enough to worry about. Read it twice! But really, not if any of the tags tweak you too hard, because the author does not pull punches.

Title: Bohemian Rhapsody
Author: lizzieraindrops on AO3
Pairing: Elementary!Moriarty|Elementary!Irene Adler/Joan Watson, Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson
Word Count: 5,084
Rating: Gen
Warnings: none
Verse: Elementary, Sherlock BBC, Ritchieverse, ACD Canon

Author's summary: None of us are dead. Let's all go out to dinner!

Jamie Moriarty receives an invitation to dinner, and drags Joan Watson to girls' night out with three more Irene Adlers.

Reccer's comments: What happens when three Irene Adlers (one of whom is also Moriarty) get together for a girls' night out? Hilarity. I also love how lizzieraindrops distinguishes each Irene Adler from the others in terms of wardrobe style and how they address each other.

Title:On the Orbits of Asteroids

Author: Sheila_Snow
Pairing: James Moriarty/John Watson, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 22279 words
Rating: Explicit
Verse: ACD
Warnings: None
Author's summary: Watson has a secret from his past that he's kept from Holmes, but the past has a tendency to come back and haunt you.

Watson is definitely the star of this story. It's a story with an unexpected twist. It's sad and a little humorous and a completely different look at all the characters we thought we knew so well, with more than one surprise relationship lurking within. It takes all the tropes and turns them on their heads, yet manages to keep everyone perfectly in character. Oh, and it's hot. And Watson is a BAMF.

I think this is the author's only story in this fandom; I wish she would write more.

Title: Dear Jim
Author: NewWonder
Pairing: John Watson/Jim Moriarty
Length: 6666 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The memories come in letters and notes.

Reccer's comments: This fic could be considered AU, as it's a bit of a "what-if Jim and John somehow met before the events of A Study in Pink". It's told in a non-chronological and jumbly manner from Jim's POV, which I like, as I feel it (and the language itself) probably fits what it's like in his brain. This isn't a common pairing, but I enjoy it as I feel like the characteristics of John Watson that makes him such a good foil/complement/whatever to Sherlock could be applied to Moriarty as well. Even if you don't really like this pairing (and I hesitate to use the word "pairing" for this fic anyways) give it a try, as the writing is great and Jim's voice is amazing!

Excerpt: Dear Jim, the letter says in John's atrocious handwriting.

Jim crumples the battered sheet in his fingers, throws it away. The ball of paper rolls under his bed, rests there in the dark.

Jim never lets anyone clean his room – too wary, too suspicious, didn't get all the way to the top by trusting right and left. He never digs the letters out from under his bed – they lie there, gathering dust and undisclosed desires. Their presence feels like a warm touch to his soft underbelly, to the soul he doesn’t have, nagging constantly, soothing at night, when Jim can't fall asleep, – a bit like John's gaze.

The letters gradually recede and finally stop coming. Six months after the last letter is when Jim finally cannot stand it any longer; when Jim sends one short e-mail that says, "Tiger is go".

Title: The Rules of Fair Play Do Not Apply
Author: wallhaditcoming
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Jim Moriarty/John Watson
Length: 10 449 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Fill for this prompt (spoilers for fic). Basically, only the first hostage in TGG happened, because Sherlock called Jim and then they decided it would be more fun to keep each other entertained. Jim starts hanging out at the flat, and begins to think John is pretty interesting. Sherlock and Jim begin competing over John and trying to ruin one another's attempts to woo him.

Reccer's comments: Oh, what to say about this fic! It's a bit cracky, and a bit OOC, and doesn't really take itself that seriously, but it'll make you smile. And really, who doesn't want to read a fic with Jim and Sherlock as constantly bickering best-frenemies? Featuring a guest appearance by Irene Adler, Lestrade in the corner all "GAIZ!.. WAT.", and best of all a happy ending for everyone!

Excerpt: He needed to come up with a complicated crime that he could use to completely humiliate the detective and impress John. No murders then. Pity, Jim had a flair for those. Elaborate embezzlement scheme? Counterfeiting, maybe?

John glanced back and forth between the two consultants. "Have you two had a row?"

Sherlock shot him an icy glare. "I do not," he said seriously, "have 'rows'." He sniffed, insulted by the very idea.

"Fine, started a feud or whatever you want to call it."

Title: Off on the Wrong Foot
Author: [livejournal.com profile] unloyal_olio
Pairing: John/Sherlock, John/Moriarty (a little)
Length: ~31,000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: some fairly violent scenes
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:
John and Sherlock aren't flatmates. Instead, John gets a job in Bart's morgue, and Sherlock attempts to abscond with body parts. Which is just not on.
BAMF!John. Lots of male fighting. Hate sex. Cuddly love probably, too.

The sound of hysterical laughter bursts from doorway.
Both John and Sherlock turn to see Molly and a silver-haired man looking almost purple from the efforts of trying to hold their breaths.
Sherlock rolls his eyes before dramatically declaring, “Unhand me.”
John wants to. Especially now that they have an audience, but still. “Only if you promise to leave.”
“I require my foot.”
“You have two feet. That’s sufficient for most human beings."

Reccer's comments:
The last bit of this fic was posted just this week and my first reaction was: Oh, it's Christmas. Unloyal_Olio, has written a number of excellent multi-chapter stories, and this is one of the best so far. It's the kind of AU where just one aspect of canon is changed: in this case, John takes a job at the morgue with Molly. I love that John is depicted as hardworking and dedicated to his job--he doesn't just go all starry-eyed the minute Sherlock turns up. The characterization is brilliant here, especially John and Sherlock (well, they are the main focus!), but also the minor characters: Mycroft, in particular, kicks some serious butt.

This story is also a casefic, so I can't say much about the plot without giving it away...but Unloyal_Olio really knows their stuff. The fight scenes are exciting and action-packed, the deductions are fun and actually make sense, and the whole thing is handled with such a great sense of humor that the plot manages to be both thrilling and hilarious at the same time. Look forward to dazzling descriptions, snappy banter and a story that will have you glued to your computer screen until the very end. Warning: do not start reading before bed. You will not be able to stop. ^_^

Title: Out of Service
Author: toestastegood
Pairing: James Moriarty/John Watson (pre-slash)
Length: 3378 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John starts to receive obscene phone calls in the middle of the night.

Reccer's comments: This is one of those fics that, for all intents and purposes should be complete !crack, but instead turns out to be fantastically hilarious and... sweet. It probably has something to do with how the author is incredibly good at keeping the characters "in character", and the great verbal dialogue. This is an unlikely pairing, but by the end of this fic you are actually starting to see how this could plausibly work (if you ignore Season 2, of course). John is the usual combination of unflappable and sarcastic, Jim is insane but strangely endearing, and Sherlock is just gleeful.

Excerpt:

It must all be part of a plot to blow up the queen or take over the world; both are far more acceptable options.

Sherlock only stares at him blankly when he tries to suggest as much. "How would harassing you help with that?" he asks.

It's a fair point. John glares at him anyway. "We need to catch him," he says. "He needs to be in prison."

"I highly doubt that will ever happen. Moriarty is far too well connected to linger in a cell for long."

Sherlock doesn't sound quite as horrified by that as he ought to; he sounds impressed, actually. 'Not good', John thinks at him, but he hasn't yet acquired the ability to transmit his thoughts.

Title: Reaction
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blind_author
Pairing: Moriarty/John (non-con), eventual John/Sherlock
Word count: maybe 30, 000-50,000 across all the chapters? Twelve chapters, anyway, but it flies by in the reading...
Warnings: non-con, graphic description of the aftermath of torture and aftermath of rape
Summary: Written for a prompt on the kinkmeme: Before shoving him in the explosive vest, Moriarty fucked John, viciously. John makes it through the whole encounter with Moriarty and Homles via his own badass soldier nerves of steel, but afterwards, when he and Sherlock are admitted to the hospital for minor burns and abrasions and shock, the hospital staff find other injuries on John.

Fic is here: http://blind-author.livejournal.com/636.html

Reccer's comments:
Heed the non-con warning on this one, particularly if you are coming from [livejournal.com profile] blind_author 's fantastically beautiful and less traumatic HDM crossover.  However, this fic is something which seems all-too rare in non-con fanfic- a fic which focuses on the aftermath and does it respectfully, allowing the victim great dignity.  It is aptly called Reaction as it depicts all the main characters' reactions to what happened.  Instead of bloody revenge, the catharsis is slow, painful recovery but there are some lighter notes along the way, even if the horror of what has happened colours what follows.  The love story between John and Sherlock which blossoms under the surface is a thing of true beauty and  I applaud the author's decision not to depict any resulting sexual relationship - the touching, tender finish to this piece is very, very satisfying.  I should say that it's another one which I came to beta and holds a special place in my fic pantheon for the insight which it has brought me into blind_author's work.  But the perfect, perfect characterisation (her Mycroft and Sherlock voices are exceptional) would be enought to cause me to rec it, even without this personal connection.  Fantastic writing throughout.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
