Title: The Silent Girl
Artist/Author: Devilry
Pairing: Watson/Lestrade
Length: 60 pages
Rating: R (mature subject matter, sex)
Warnings: Contains spoilers, highlight to view Implied non-con/incest/underage
Verse: Canon
Author's summary:
During Holmes' absence Watson and Lestrade travel to a village on a case.

Reccer's comments:
This is one of my favourite fanworks in Sherlock Holmes fandom, and it is a standout piece among all the fandoms I've participated in, as well as being one of the most sophisticated and successful graphic novels I've had the pleasure to get my hands on. This is a complete graphic novel pastiche that pairs Watson and Lestrade during the Great Hiatus to investigate the disappearance of a young girl from a prominent family. As well as providing us with an intriguing (and tragic) case to follow, the author also weaves in several other story elements, including Mycroft's correspondence with Sherlock, a plotline featuring Sebastian Moran, Watson's continuing grief over the loss of Holmes, and some very satisfying character and relationship development involving Lestrade.

The supporting characters are lively and believable as individuals, each with their own inner lives and motivations. While there aren't many significant female characters in canon to work with, the artist does an admirable job adding in the women in this story, and even creates an original character who I would love to know more about. Exterior and interior shots are meticulously detailed and create a living, atmospheric world for the characters to inhabit, with weather, architecture, period clothing, animal and plant life all given the time and attention needed to paint a portrait of the era and location in the reader's mind. Gentle touches of humour are incorporated into the artwork, and I particularly enjoyed a certain canine character who appears briefly.

I find myself thinking back over this story often, particularly when I'm considering how to improve my own writing skills, and the book stands up very well to re-readings. The artist has generously shared the whole tale online, and it can be enjoyed here: The Silent Girl

Title: Due Diligence
Author: PrettyArbitrary ([livejournal.com profile] arbitrary_fic)
Pairing: Lestrade/John
Length: ~4000 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No standard warnings
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: A bloke built up frustrations, dealing with the sort of nuttery that Sherlock Holmes brought to the job. Which was why Greg liked to ask John over to his place at the close of a Holmes-populated case. The stacks of closing paperwork cleared out a lot easier with memories of John moaning in knots of rope to keep him company.
Reccer's comments:

PrettyArbitrary's work is a treasure trove of nuclear-level smut, and this piece is a fine example. There's not much Lestrade/John fic out there, but this little treat does both characters a good turn as it explores how they both unwind after a case. It touches on how events during a case (in this instance, John withholding information from Lestrade) might affect their romantic life. And of course, gloriously kinky sex follows.

What sets this apart from your run-of-the-mill guilty pleasure kink fic is:
a) the quality of the writing. On a sentence-to-sentence level, this work is both beautiful and fun to read
b) realistic, well-thought-out sex. Partners communicate, people have issues that are acknowledged, regular precautions are taken, and the author demonstrates an understanding of the limits and foibles of the human body.
b) characterization that carries through the smut. These aren't just random body parts smooching together. John and Lestrade both react to each other's actions in ways that are delightfully in character for the story.

Title: Cups of Tea, and History
Author: [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist
Pairing: Lestrade/Watson
Length: 9,338
Rating: Teen and up
Warnings: Major character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary:
Lestrade wakes in hospital with no memory of the past eleven months, and begins the slow process of reconstructing his missing year. But as the inconsistencies build, he starts to feel that he shouldn’t be asking what he’s forgotten, but who.

Reccer's comments:
This story will not be everyone's cup of tea *ahem* but for those of you who enjoy the unremitting anguish of a well-written deathfic, look no further than this heartbreaker.

I am loathe to reveal too much of the plot, because [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist's writing is brilliant and masterfully done, and for maximum effect you will want to have the story unfold as the author tells it. Still, I can say that as clues are discovered one by one, you the reader will see the shape of what's coming; it positively looms and there's this incredible tension as you wait for the truth to be revealed. When it does happen, the realization is painful and devastating, just as you knew it would be. And yet you cannot stop reading.

Did I say how brilliant Imp is?

This does NOT have one of those "smile through your tears" kind of ending, just so you know. It is intense and haunting and stays with you. It's certainly stayed with me.

TL;DR: [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist's "Cups of Tea, and History" = MY HEART IN A MILLION TINY SHARDS LET ME SHOW YOU IT

Title: The Fall of Gods
Author: ImpishTubist
Pairing: Greg Lestrade/John Watson, Sherlock Holmes/Victor Trevor
Length: 101584 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Violence, character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock remembers a time before Moriarty. It seemed to go on forever. It was over all too quickly.

Sherlock finds an ally in death and begins the slow process of dismantling Moriarty's network, not knowing if he'll ever be able to return home. Meanwhile, back in London, John and Lestrade mourn, remember, and move on.

Reccer's comments: I am very much a Johnlock shipper, but once in awhile an author comes along that makes me a partial convert to other pairings. Sherlock/Victor is very much the central pairing of this story, and I bought every word of it. Yes, it is a post-Reichenbach fic, but at its heart it is a story about love, loss, second chances - and finally, the hard lesson that healing can begin only after one learns to truly let go.

The writing here is gut-wrenching and powerful, painful and yet cleansing at the same time. I was also touched in ways that have nothing to do with the actual story, but in the powerful messages the author conveys along with the main plot. It's not a feel-good story, by any means, but it affected me in such a way that I was compelled to rec it here.

This story is part of a series, but this one stands alone just fine on its own. I would recommend reading the other stories as well, one of which is currently a WIP, "An Age of Silver"

Title: Room Eight
Author: roane
Pairing: Greg Lestrade/John Watson
Length: 2,830
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Back in London after years of war, John Watson runs into someone from his past he never expected to see again. After fifteen years, neither of them is who they once were, but more surprising to John is what hasn’t changed.

Reccer's comments: This is not a pairing I would’ve thought would work, but roane does a great job of making it believable. Plus this story is a nice character study of John and Greg – both present day and when they were younger men. In less than 3,000 words, this story packs a lot of feelings plus some extremely hot imagery. Enjoy!

Plus a bonus! As the author pointed out in the comments, this is a remix of musamihi's excellent Full Circle So two recs for the price of one!

Title: John's Fairy Godfather
Author: Flawedamythyst
Pairing: John Watson/Greg Lestrade
Length: 11,289 words
Rating: Tween
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: John was scrubbing the floor when Sherlock appeared before him with a shimmer of magic and announced he was his fairy godfather, and that they were going to find him a True Love and a Happily Ever After.

Cinderella AU. God, I'm so sorry, guys.

Reccer's comments: Yes, it's crack, but it's hysterically funny and everyone is in character. It takes genius to pull that off.

Title: Ain't Seen the Sunshine
Author: [livejournal.com profile] emungere
Pairing: John/Lestrade pre-slash
Length: 27,000 this story, part of a 5-part universe
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: brief instance of off-screen domestic violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: "I have two sons," she said. "Ages five and twelve. They're very bright, and I don't say that as a doting mother. I say that as someone who's seen their IQ scores and discovered that the elder was writing essays for a number of university students at fifty pounds a paper."
Reccer's comments: This is an AU where John is a nanny for young Mycroft and Sherlock. No wait, don't walk away! I generally don't enjoy stories that involve children, but Mycroft and Sherlock are still wonderfully themselves in this universe that this AU really rings true. John gets to be a BAMF all over the place, and it's fascinating to see him relate to the enigmatic Mrs. Holmes. Seeing John become part of the family is heartwarming.

Also, Lestrade comes into the picture with some choice scenes of sexual tension. This universe has expanded to include not only the five stories in the series, but also Nanny!John's blog (Nothing Happens to Me) and Lestrade's blog (Interesting Murders Not Boring Stuff). Enjoy the lovely domestic life of these four.

Title: The Top Secret Live Journal of Sherlock Holmes

Author: [livejournal.com profile] woe_in_a_hoodie

Pairing: John/Sherlock, John/Lestrade, Sherlock/Lestrade, John/Sherlock/Lestrade

Length: not sure... very long, though, thank goodness :)

Rating: R-NC-17 depending on the chapter

Warnings: Cursing everywhere, sexual content, 4chan makes an appearance, a tiny flash of incest due to Rule 34, drug use (nicotine patches), and 'Real People Slash' in that in this universe, Sherlock has an RPS fandom that follows his site and John's blog.
Notes: THIS FIC IS PURPOSEFULLY ABSURD. (Thought you ought to know.) Much love to Louise Rennison, author of the Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series of novels, which are the main inspiration for this work.

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock has a Livejournal, which he updates constantly via his mobile phone and netbook. Everyone offline thinks that he's this stoic super-genius, when in reality he's a bonkers super-genius.

Reccer's comments: Warning. Don't read this fic in the presence of children or anybody who you don't want reading over your shoulder and asking, "WHAT on EARTH is so incredibly FUNNY?" Seriously. You don't want to have to explain cock spats to an 11 year old. Really, you don't. (For the record, I didn't mention cock spats to my 11 year old, in case you were worried. I did however have to stop reading the story b/c I couldn't stop laughing and he wasn't going to let that go without explanation.)

This is one of the funniest, zaniest, laugh-out-loud, cleverest stories I've read in fandom. It's cleverly done and Sherlock's voice is spot on and, at the same time, skewed just that tiny bit off so that he's absolutely, undoubtedly insane. In a good way.

When you need a pick me up, read this story. You'll laugh so hard, you'll cry.

Title: They Shall, From Time To Time part one & part two
Author: [livejournal.com profile] impishtubist
Pairing: John/asexual!Lestrade
Length: 6,500 words (both parts)
Rating: PG-13
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John, Lestrade, and the state of their union. A series of vignettes.

Reccer's comments: Like I said before, I am a hopeless case when it comes to John/Lestrade. I love them together and I want ALL THE SHIPPING. This is a really lovely story, or series of stories, that puts an interesting spin on their relationship. I don't think I've ever seen Lestrade done as asexual before, but it works so well here. Her portrayal of their relationship is wonderful and makes my heart go all pitterpattermelt<3 If you're at all interested in J/L and are looking for something a bit different than the usual J/L+S dynamic that seems to have become standard fanon for this ship (probably because it is awesome, and great fun to read about; I am not against J/L+S in the slightest), definitely, definitely give this a go.

Part one does not link to part two, so I've put them both up at the top. Part one can stand on its own, but it's kind of like Christmas, or the favored holiday of your choosing, to come to the end and realise "oh wait, there's more!"

Title: Hold on Hope
Author: [livejournal.com profile] notkerouac
Pairing: John/Lestrade
Length: 10,900 words
Rating: Unrated, but I'd guess PG-13
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Dating John comes with a Sherlock-shaped caveat.

Reccer's comments: Aaaaand, finally the truth comes out: John/Lestrade is my otp. Not joking, they totally are. This pairing has such potential for awkwardness, adorable fluff, and the two of them being scary, sexy BAMFs. Here, [livejournal.com profile] notkerouac deftly handles both the John/Lestrade relationship (which was exactly as I'd half-pictured it when I first started noticing this pairing) and the John/Sherlock bromance. Her Sherlock is both hilarious and kind of a dick, which seems pretty true to his character. He spends a lot of the first half of this fic cockblocking John, but eventually he gets over himself and the three of them start figuring out how they fit into each other's lives.

If you're a fan of the J/L/S dynamic in [livejournal.com profile] thirdbird_fic's Triangulations 'verse, definitely give this one a shot because it is lovely and sweet and all things that are good.

I am glued to the kitchen table. SH. )

Title: Ain’t Seen the Sunshine (Since I Don’t Know When)
Author: Eleanor K
Pairing: John/Lestrade
Length: 27,700 words
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Can't think of any
Verse: Sherlock
Author's summary: Written for a prompt on the Sherlock fic meme where John is Sherlock and Mycroft’s nanny. It’s also somehow warped into a massive retelling of Hound of the Baskervilles.
Reccer's comments: I love this verse so much. I know the premise sounds cracky but the storytelling is amazing.  I am not really a John/Lestrade shipper but John and Lestrade are really very cute here.   The real heart of this story is the relationship that develops between John and 5 year old Sherlock and 12 year old Mycroft.  Even if you don't like kidfic give this story a chance.  The kids in question are Sherlock and Mycroft after all and they are both perfectly themselves, just as kids.

Title: Snowflakes (Like Dust in the Sun)
Author: Eleanor K
Pairing: John/Lestrade
Length: 6,741 words
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Can't think of any
Verse: Sherlock
Author's summary: Christmas sequel to "Ain't Seen The Sunshine"
Reccer's comments:  This is a very sweet story and really it's a day in the life of this odd, adorable little family just before Christmas. There are also two blogs in this verse.  John's blog Nothing Happens to Me and Lestrade's Interesting murders not boring stuff .  These blogs are fabulous and much better written than the blogs put out by the BBC.  They are interactive fan fic chronicling the lives of John, Lestrade, and the boys. They are so much fun to read.  The conversations in the comments are usually a blast.   I really can not recommend this verse highly enough.

Title: Triangulations
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thirdbird_fic
Pairing:John/Lestrade, with hints of John/Sherlock/Lestrade
Length: This part 9474, the other fics in the series are 8410 and 5696 respectively
Rating: R the first two parts PG the third
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: In which John and Lestrade pinch the bridges of their noses and sigh a lot, John is kidnapped for the fifty-seven-zillionth time, and Sherlock finally breaks. Sequel to On Lestrade's Flawed Heart, and Other Slightly Damaged Things The fic has also a sequel : The Adventure of the Dying Detective Inspector

Reccer's comments: The writer calls it “The not your average threesome series”. It’s the sweet, realistic development of the relationship between John and Lestrade, told from Lestrade’s point of view, focusing in the first part on John/Lestrade, in the second on the ways Sherlock establish himself as the unmovable object in their relationship and the third is a funny vignette on Lestrade and Sherlock getting into trouble when left unsupervised. I loved the face offs between Sherlock and Lestrade and calm, maternal John. It’s very sweet and terribly funny in parts.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
