Title: Smitty [series]
Author: NairobiWonders
Pairing: Joan Watson/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 9440
Rating: T
Warnings: N/A
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: "What Smitty Saw" - A just for fun fic, humor (hopefully), joanlock. "A Small Plus" - a sort of continuation...I swore I would never do a pregnancy story with these characters. It always seemed so OOC to imagine them as parents but cadencelili asked about it and started me thinking that perhaps with this lighter version of Sherlock and Joan it might work. It's just for fun so uhm ... Here goes.

Reccer's comments: The trials and entirely amusing tribulations of poor Officer Smitty, who has the consistent bad luck to inadvertently interrupt Sherlock and Watson - here in a previously-established, if secret, sexual relationship — in various compromising positions. That said, the author's teen rating is appropriate; sexual content is implied, not explicit. The second story is a pregnancy AU with both comic and serious elements (one of which neatly explains why Sherlock and Mycroft look nothing alike). It ends with the baby's birth; this is not kid!fic. There's a little bit of everything else though: some fluff, some case work, some curtain fic, some bickering, some hurt/comfort, some romance. The series is listed as incomplete, but both stories are finished, and nothing's been added in almost 2 years.

Title: i'm half-doomed, and you're semi-sweet (what a match)
Author: everybodylies
Pairing: Sherlock/Irene, Sherlock/Joan
Length: 6900
Rating: Gen
Warnings: N/A
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary:
The love story of Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson.

It takes years.

Reccer's comments: Written halfway through season one, this fic is an inadvertent AU in its vision of the course of the relationship between Holmes and Watson, how Irene Adler fits in, and how Moriarty is defeated. There are a few unplanned delights for the reader familiar with all four seasons of the show (as of the time of this rec), from a client's stray comment at the start, "Jamie? Murder somebody?" to the repeated exploration of the ways Joan chooses time and again to stay and Sherlock's shaky efforts to have faith that she will continue to do just that.

mods: can we have a tag for character: holmes' father? [in this case it's not the same as character: Morland Holmes (Elementary), but that tag might be needed eventually too.]

Title: Complicated
Author: NyxEtoile
Pairing: Gen, Joan/Sherlock
Length: 50,000 words
Rating: T to M
Warnings: N/A
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: [No series summary provided. Six stories cover friends-to-lovers developments after season 1 through multiple cases. The series is listed as not complete, but nothing has been added since October 2013, and it reaches a satisfying conclusion as is.]

Reccer's comments: I love the slow build of this series, a mix of case-fic and personal moments with a subtle but consistent weaving of character development and history. There's not a lot of case-fic for Elementary, but the first two longer installments of this series include some of the best. One with faint echoes in this reader's mind of the X-Files' "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," and another more explosive case, so to speak. The third long fic, which is also the last installment, brings back a familiar villain. Joan plays a central active role in working and solving all the cases. The three shorter pieces each bridge a transition from one level of relationship to the next. Both partners experience physical and emotional hurt over the course of the series and offer corresponding comfort to each other.

“I mean it.” She put every ounce of fear and worry and panic she’d felt in the last few seconds into those three words. “That is the last time you tell me to run and leave you behind.” His fingers flexed against hers, but he didn’t respond.

“This thing between us. The complicated. It’s strange and a little scary. But I want it. I want to see what we’ll become. Even if it’s never more then this. Even if it fizzles out in a year. Whatever happens I want to know. But it needs both of us to get there. So from here on out whatever happens we do it together. If I’m running then you’re running with me. If you’re standing and fighting then I’m right there next to you. That’s the only way this is going to work.”

Title: The Years Play Out as Days
Author: mrsvc
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Joan Watson or friendship/gen
Length: 1572
Rating: Gen
Warnings: none
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: No one would say that Sherlock and Joan retired quietly to Upstate New York.
Reccer's comments: Charming and bittersweet story set near the end of the partnership, when the nemesis that can't be defeated is simple physical frailty, i.e. a realistic portrayal of old age. The two face it together as long as they can with plausible denial, seasoned by reminiscences of adventures-past, and eventual acceptance. No one dies in the fic, but it's not far off and they know it. They take the opportunity to be grateful for their decades together. The author tagged it as Holmes/Watson but it's easily read as platonic OTP if you prefer.

Title: Paler than Grass
Author: philalethia
Pairing: Joan/OMC, Sherlock/Joan
Length: 10175 words
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: n/a
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: Joan tries to date, and Sherlock gets in the way.

Reccer's comments: I admit I haven’t read that many Elementary fics – it may be due to the fact that when it comes to this fandom I prefer stories in which Sherlock and Joan are friends rather than a romantic pairing – but the characterization is absolutely spot on in this one; in fact, the interactions between Joan and Sherlock don’t feel all that different from what we saw in the first series of the show.
While Sherlock is a bit possessive and clingy at first he still tries not to overstep Joan’s boundaries when she tells him not to and it’s obvious how much he cares about her and their friendship, which I can’t help but find endearing.

A delightful read with hints of humor that might interest even readers who prefer gen.

Excerpt:

“Wow,” Marty murmurs, coming to stand beside [Joan] and then quickly averting his eyes, “a little awkward.”

“Good evening, Watson, Martin,” Sherlock greets cheerily. “Don’t worry, I assure you this isn’t
the slightest bit sexual. Your arrival is actually quite fortuitous. I’m testing how inconspicuously I
can escape a pair of handcuffs when I am experiencing mild physical discomfort. You can tell me
how obvious my escape attempts are—and perhaps take a few notes as well,” he adds to Joan,
“for when you’re ready to move on to intermediate escape attempts.”

“You can get out of handcuffs?” Marty asks her.

“On the first try,” answers Sherlock, beaming with no small amount of pride. “She’s a natural.”

Title: Death Before Dusk
Author: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 (Yahtzee)
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Joan Watson
Length: 15,816 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None apply
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: The bad news: In 111 days, an asteroid will strike the Earth in a cataclysm that promises to destroy human civilization as we know it.

The good news: There's been a murder.

Reccer's comments:
This is, without a doubt, the best longfic I have read in the Elementary fandom. It's a story about things on the cusp, the world on the verge of annihilation and Sherlock & Joan balanced precariously between simple friendship and something more. At the start of it they have been separated, each dealing with the impending apocalypse alone. As they investigate one last case Yahtzee digs in to their characters, getting to the core of Sherlock's reasons for investigating murders and what Sherlock gives to Joan. Yahtzee has captured Sherlock's and Joan's voices from the show exactly, but at the end of the world it's also crystal clear that these modern adaptations are, always and forever, no matter the trappings, Holmes and Watson.

This is a fic of high emotion rendered in a gorgeously understated way. The case is involving in itself in addition to the way it brings clarity to the characters; Bell, Gregson, Ms. Hudson, and Moriarty all appear, each dealing with the end of the world in perfectly characteristic and heartbreaking ways. There is a great deal of anguish here, imbuing virtually every scene, and yet ultimately the story is incredibly hopeful.

If you are only ever going to read one Elementary fic, I beg that you make it this one.

Title: Civilisation
Author: eyebrowofdoom
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/Joan Watson
Length: 1,221
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: He stands very still, the body language of a person who is anxious about whether he is doing something right. (Established relationship vignette.)

Reccer's comments:
This fic is just six short scenes, during which nothing of note particularly happens, and yet it’s such a rich portrait of Joan & Sherlock’s relationship somewhere vaguely far in the future. eyebrowofdoom manages to capture really well Sherlock’s discomfort in his body and contrasts it really beautifully with how grounded Joan is. And this Joan has some absolutely lovely sharp edges, in full ownership of her own desires even as she thinks they aren’t quite good. It’s filled with absolutely gem-like moments of humor and pathos that manage to avoid the trap of excessive sentimentality.

Title: A Lopsided Symmetry of Sin and Virtue
Author: language_escapes
Pairing: Sherlock/Joan
Length: 25610
Rating: Teen
Warnings: none
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: Joan thinks she should be less surprised by his sudden, “Watson, we’re getting married!” and yet, here she is, cooking her egg and trying not to be astonished.
Infants are vanishing, and Sherlock and Joan go undercover as a married couple to find their kidnappers.
Reccer's comments: I have to confess I'm a big fan of the "pretend marriage" trope and this is the best fic in that category I've read in a while. Language_escapes does a terrific job with it, because they don't use the trope as a cheap device to get them together but to explore how the characters would react if they suddenly had to play the happy couple.
I'm really impressed with how they wrote Sherlock, too. His tics and idiosyncrasies are perfect.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
