Title: Bedtime Stories
Author: Liketheriver
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 34,000
Rating: Mature
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John's POV during Season 2 and beyond when Sherlock takes up semi-permanent residence in his bed. A collection of codas and missing scenes wrapped up into one long fic and topped with a bow that takes the story beyond Reichenbach and into happy territory once more.
Reccer's comments: You know that feeling when you are reading a story and you find yourself slowing down and taking breaks because the awesome is so perfect you want to draw out the story just a bit more? If you don't know that feeling, then read this story and you will. Love this story. I love how it perfectly slides into cannon and fills in the gaps that I didn't even think to wonder about. The characterization is perfect, and it contains one of my favorite tropes of this fandom- John and Sherlock 'not quite platonically' sharing a bed.

Excerpt:
I ponder for a few seconds then ask the only thing I can, "Why are you acting this way?"

He goes back to staring at the ceiling, speaking between the tent of fingers over his lips. "There is only one explanation I can come up with."

Well, at least he does have an explanation, which means, hopefully this conversation will be over soon and I can get back to sleep. I’m already yawning, preparing to agree with him whatever he says, so I can shoo him out of my room to go scan forty websites simultaneously on my laptop, his laptop, and both our mobiles for his next case.

"I must be in love with you," he says quietly.

I speak dismissively around my yawn. "I knew you’d figure it… What? Sherlock, you are not in love with me." If my laugh is a little frayed, well, it’s been one of those nights.

He sighs in disappointment. "I suppose you’re right," he admits with absolutely no argument. "But it would have been a fairly simple problem to fix considering how easily women don’t seem to fall in love with you, or if they do, they quickly fall out of love with you. I just assumed it would be the same with me."

My eyes narrow and I open my mouth to argue, but I quickly decide it’s not worth it, especially since my track record has proven him correct. Instead, I roll over on my side with my back to him. "Time to go, Sherlock. Unlike some people, I rate sleep very highly, and I would like to get at least a little before the sun comes up. We can examine your feelings in the morning over a nice cup of tea if you still feel the need, but right now we’re going to suppress them down like the good little Queen’s subjects we are and get some sleep."

I tug the blankets up over my shoulder, at least as far as I can with Sherlock still lying on top of them beside me. I pull harder with a frustrated, "Sherlock…"

"Obviously, you’re right, John, I’m not in love with you."

"Cheers. Well done, you. Now off to bed." I yank once more, but he doesn’t budge.

"But if I ever could fall in love with someone, I believe it would be you."

I lie very still, considering what he just said. So many damn variables in that statement, and way too many to consider given my mental state. I hated seeing Sherlock at that pool. I hated Moriarty for using me on Sherlock like that, more even than threatening my life with a vest full of explosives. But, if I’m honest with myself, really honest, honest in a way I haven’t allowed myself to be since before I was shot, I’d admit I had never been more relieved to see anyone as I was when Sherlock walked into the pool. Because I knew if anyone could get me out of there alive, it would be him. It is bloody well terrifying how much I trust the man when it is obvious to anyone he cannot be trusted to do anything to remotely qualify as safe or rational. Sherlock Holmes is the antithesis of everything my therapist told me I should have in my life, but he is the very essence of everything I need to feel alive.

So, who am I to deprive him of the same thing?

I clear my throat and speak over my shoulder. "If you’re going to stay, at least get under the duvet so I don’t feel like I’m in a straightjacket." I mutter under my breath, "Although I bloody well may deserve one for agreeing to this."

Title: Out of Service
Author: toestastegood
Pairing: James Moriarty/John Watson (pre-slash)
Length: 3378 words
Rating: M
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John starts to receive obscene phone calls in the middle of the night.

Reccer's comments: This is one of those fics that, for all intents and purposes should be complete !crack, but instead turns out to be fantastically hilarious and... sweet. It probably has something to do with how the author is incredibly good at keeping the characters "in character", and the great verbal dialogue. This is an unlikely pairing, but by the end of this fic you are actually starting to see how this could plausibly work (if you ignore Season 2, of course). John is the usual combination of unflappable and sarcastic, Jim is insane but strangely endearing, and Sherlock is just gleeful.

Excerpt:

It must all be part of a plot to blow up the queen or take over the world; both are far more acceptable options.

Sherlock only stares at him blankly when he tries to suggest as much. "How would harassing you help with that?" he asks.

It's a fair point. John glares at him anyway. "We need to catch him," he says. "He needs to be in prison."

"I highly doubt that will ever happen. Moriarty is far too well connected to linger in a cell for long."

Sherlock doesn't sound quite as horrified by that as he ought to; he sounds impressed, actually. 'Not good', John thinks at him, but he hasn't yet acquired the ability to transmit his thoughts.

Title: In Haunted Attics series
Author: faviconcocaineboy
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 52,803
Rating: hard R - NC-17
Warnings: past rape/non-con, mentions of underage rape [see author's warnings for each chapter/part in notes]
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Post TGG. Sherlock and John's relationship is new, still in its beginning stages. Sherlock struggles with intimacy because of which is difficult to get close to. Any hope John has of learning from Sherlock's past partners's mistakes is a lost cause due to Sherlock 'deleting' all the information. But just because Sherlock can't remember doesn't mean it's not around somewhere...

Reccer's comments: This is a very hard-hitting series, dealing with some very serious issues in both John and Sherlock's past. The writer incorporates canon references from both the books and the television series but makes it their own by creating a detailed past that effects John and Sherlock's relationship "today" as well as their interactions with other canon and OC characters (Sherlock's drug use and past sexual encounters play a big role). The author also uses actual images of mentioned notebooks, case notes, misc. notes, and pages from mentioned books/articles in the story which is a nice touch.
Each part of the series can be read alone but together they build a very complex and dark but still fun to read story. I read through from the first word till the last last night and I only put it down when my eyes started closing against my will, haha. If you like a darker, angst-ridden casefic, this is definitely one you don't want to pass over.

Title: The Ceremony of Innocence (part 4 of The Cold Song series)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhorrors
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: ~10,300 this part (~50,000+ total)
Rating: hard R for graphic descriptions of violence (NC-17 other parts)
Verse: BBC
Warnings: See author's warnings for each chapter.
Author's summary: Sherlock is tested to the shattering point, but some things must be broken before they can be fixed, and some things can never remain hidden...especially from ourselves.
And then Sherlock made this noise.

It was a terrible thing. As terrible as the assemblage in front of them. John had last heard that kind of agonized whimper from a five year old boy just outside Kandahar. He’d lost his entire family in a roadside bombing, the only survivor. They’d found him wrapped around his mother, half her head gone, lap a soup of viscera and blood. He’d made that sound, a keening low in the back of his throat, when John had separated him from the corpse.

He’d never have expected it from Sherlock.

Reccer's comments: Tags of this entry are for all parts of the series, not just this one.
The first three parts were rec'd previously here but the writer just posted an additional chapter that is so powerful, it definitely calls for a re-visit to the series. With this series alone, [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhorrors has become a favourite writer. The way in which they incorporate music and language and story into their fic is a tremendous achievement and makes for a very emotionally hard-hitting, dynamic series. Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Anthea's attempt to stand in for Mycroft Holmes when he leaves to be at Sherlock's bedside after the pool incident is driving her to the brink of exhaustion.

Reccer's comments: This short ficlet does a fantastic job of showing us how important Anthea and her work actually is. After reading about all the crises and conflicts she has to deal with, you will never again think of her as "that secretary with the Blackberry". And I'm sure everyone can imagine how unbelievably stressful it would be to do Mycroft's job for a day...
This fic is set after the pool incident, so it doesn't contain any spoilers (but does contain speculations) for series 2.

Rating: R
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Post-TGG, Sebastian takes care of Jim while he recovers from the explosion. And then things get complicated. Based on this prompt at the meme.

Reccer's comments:

Right, this fic. Actually wait, let me get my woes out of the way first: Noooo, I didn't want to like this pairing and think about how utterly dysfunctional but kinda cute they are, what am I going to do when Reichenbach comes around?!?! Okay, done with that.

Like another commenter said, this fic makes the relationship between Moriarty and Sir Hasn't-Appeared-In-This-Series-Yet Moran look like it could really work. They're like the fucked up antithesis of Sherlock and John, but still distinctly their own people. Even if you don't like/are ambivalent to the pairing, the fic's seriously an amazing read. It shows another side of Jim, one where he's still distinctly wrong in the head but still so human in some ways, and the Sebastian that [livejournal.com profile] senket created is the perfect compliment to our favorite consulting criminal.

Title: Your Words Are Gelignite

Rating: PG-13

Author's summary: "I'll tell you what, babe - I'll let you go. Both of you even. If you shoot your pet."/ Set precisely after TGG. Moriarty gives an ultimatum. Sherlock makes a confession and does what he must. John loses himself somewhere between truth and lie.
Reccer's comments: This fic features an intense Sherlock, a confused John and an a jealous Moriarty. It is gorgeous and emotional and explores how a relationship between two complicated and broken people can develop. Everyone feels in character and it is a wonderfully angsty read.

Title: Surfacing

Author: [livejournal.com profile] machshefa

Pairing: Sherlock/John

Length: 3,567

Rating: Mature

Warnings: none

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: He’s here. Of course he is. He can no more stay away than can I.

But my vision blurs, and I know this must be a dream because I’ve come for Moriarty, but it’s John who steps out to greet me.

Reccer's comments: This story is exceptional in relaying, not only Sherlock's unique POV, but what happens when Sherlock's perceptions are tampered with, what happens when things muddle together in his mind. It is gorgeous in its imagery and the details that Machshefa weaves in so very subtly are just stunning.

Title: The Science of Circumvention
Author: lusus_scientiae
Pairing: Sherlock and John
Length: about 3100 words
Rating: R I guess
Warnings: spoiler: character death
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Spins a different ending for 'The Great Game'
Reccer's comments:

This story contains disturbing images and descriptions of drug and alcohol abuse.
It's an uncomfortable and gripping view of Sherlock after the pool, viewing himself, viewing John, in a deteriorating state.

Sherlock's an endlessly fascinating character to explore and read, most intensely, for me, when we're looking through his eyes. This is horribly good at doing so. I'm glad it's not canon.

Title: The Heart In The Whole
Author: [livejournal.com profile] verityburns
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 102,000 in 21 completed chapters
Rating: PG - R most chapters. NC-17 later. Each chapter has its own rating.
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Events after The Great Game leave Sherlock dependent on his best friend and colleague. But John has a secret of his own...
Reccer's comments: John becomes indispensable during Sherlock's recovery from a brain injury received in the pool incident.  I loved this as a WIP, and enjoyed it all over again as podfic. Take Hurt/Comfort and stir in generous quantities of UST and stir: it's a wonderful combination. It's terribly romantic, assuming a Sherlock who is inexperienced but not unwilling.

Title: The Anatomist (also available on AO3 here)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Pairing: Molly Hooper/Jim Moriarty, Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: 24,253 words
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Graphic violence, language, disturbing themes (specifically mild, non-graphic incest if you choose to read it that way), character death (Jim Moriarty). Spoilers for all of S1.
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with hints of canon.
Author's summary: "You’re not the only one to enjoy a good murder. There’s others out there just like you – except you’re just a man. And they’re so much more than that." Jefferson Hope, A Study in Pink // When they are children, Moriarty is a game. A story they tell only to each other, in whispers. Jim and Molly Moriarty, from the beginning.

Reccer's comments: While a good many of you will probably already be familiar with The Anatomist, I hope it's new and exciting for the rest of you. Frankly, I'm flabbergasted that this has not shown up here yet but I have checked, and re-checked, and then checked again, and no one has recced this story. For a while, it appeared to be a WIP, but [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis now lists it as complete. Even when the last part was called 4/5, the shifting, non-linear structure made it so much less frustrating to read than your average WIP. Basically, it seemed like it could be complete at any part, and was always wonderfully satisfying despite being "unfinished".

This is, without a doubt, my favorite Mollyarty story. Molly is fascinating and, to me at any rate, entirely plausible in this.

Title: In the Genes

Pairing: Gen (as far as I can tell)
Length: 7,400-ish words
Rating: PG
Warnings: This is a work in progress; it has not been updated since 30 November 2010. (Three chapters out of five have been posted.) Swearing. One racist comment in chapter three.
Verse: Sherlock BBC, House MD crossover
Author's summary: A diagnostician and a detective must join forces to solve a mystery that threatens both their lives.

Reccer's comments: I found this one a few months back and have been lurking ever since, hoping for an update. I got into House MD several years ago and was tickled pink when, after getting into the Sherlock fandom, I learned that Laurie and Cumberbatch had played father and son in Fortysomething. The scene where Wilson and Watson escape from House and Holmes and compare notes is brilliant.

Rating: PG
Warnings: Violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments: This fic may be short, but it is full of BAMF!John. You can never go wrong with BAMF!John. I almost feel bad for Moran...nah...not really. And yes, I enjoyed this fic so much that I podficced it.

Title: The Refining Fire (Followed by: Hide and Seek, Heaven and Hell, and The Killer in Me)

Length: ~5,300
Author's summary: Fire can burn things to ashes, but it can also burn things together. Yet another post – ep for "The Great Game."
Rating: PG
Warnings: Discussion of violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Reccer's comments: Okay...in truth, I wanted to rec "Hide and Seek" as it features the BAMF-iest of BAMF!Johns. Seriously. But I couldn't really skip straight to part 2, now could I? This series features John & Sherlock going underground to deal with "The Moriarty Issue." Part one is directly after the pool-based explosion (and in the hospital.) Just be warned that the rating goes up in the following stories. (Hint: John and Sherlock have guns.) So...start at the beginning, and see where you end up.

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.
