Tags and tagging

Hi!
Just a few words on our tags and tagging your recs.

Tags are useful search tools for grouping the recs by categories: by pairing, genre, content, and sources for the stories or other fanworks.

We ask that reccers attach tags that are relevant to the works they rec. You don't have to add everything that applies-- for example, not a character tag for everyone who might appear in the story, or every theme or content. But if Molly has a significant cameo, say, that you think people searching for her might appreciate, then by all means list her in a tag. Likewise if you think this is the addiction story people should read, then use the content: addiction tag.

The required aspects to tag are pairing (if it applies), relationship genre (i.e., gen, slash, or het*), and verse (the source: ACD books, Sherlock BBC, Granada, etc.).

The easiest place to see all of the tags available is in this list of tags.

Tagging is enabled only for the author of the post and the mods. Only the mods can add new tags. We have a beginning list up now, anticipating likely categories and characters. We'll add more as recs are made, if characters and pairings, for example, aren't covered already. You can request a new tag to be added by commenting here or by contacting one of the mods. Keep in mind, again, that we'll be adding character tags as additional characters appear in recs.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been abbreviated as SH and JW in pairings and some other places (e.g., content: sick jw). Since this recs comm is open to all versions of Sherlock Holmes, it seemed the simplest way to identify the characters. Lestrade, Gregson, and Dimmock are listed as "inspector" following ACD book canon, and Moriarty is listed only once by his (their) surname alone. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is abbreviated throughout as ACD.

*We won't add a category for "slash-if-you-squint" or similar invitations for the reader to see subtext in a story. If the author hasn't labeled her work as slash, then it's genre: gen or genre: friendship.

Should there be a genre: het as well? Because I've got several! :D

LJ really is impractical sometimes :/.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention [livejournal.com profile] seren_ccd. I hadn't realized normal comm members couldn't see all the tags until they were used...

Oh, that's awesome! Thank you! Eee! Look at all those tags. Wow. How fun is this going to be? :D

Just taking a look at the tags, and I've only noticed now: there's an arsene lupin tag and a bertie wooster one. Any reason for that? (Not that I'm not delighted to see them in here, I'm just curious.)

... that's awesome. /anticipationnnnn

Could we get some kind of Content:BAMF!John tag? There's an awful lot of that sort of fic out there. :)

I've got a Molly/Mycroft fic I'd like to rec, but there's no tag for this pairing. I'll go ahead and upload the rec now, but can I get a tag for them? Then I'll go back and add the new tag.

Hello! Please may I have a jw/mike stamford tag and also one for jw/mummy holmes?

Rarepairs are a-comin', woo!

Hello! Maybe I've missed a synonym, but could I get a tag for "content: phone sex" or perhaps "content: dirty talk"?

In preparation for some Elementary recs I'm going to make, can I get a character: marcus bell tag?

Also, do the Elementary-verse Ms. Hudson and Captain Gregson belong under the Mrs. Hudson and Inspector Gregson tags, or do they need tags of their own like Joan Watson has?

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-04-30 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so when tagging Elementary recs for characters, I should use character: john watson for Joan? That's, um, confusing. . .

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-04-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see, I thought you were saying the Joan Watson tag was for fem!John Watson. That is to say, fanworks where John Watson is always-a-girl or is genderflipped, not fanworks for verses where always-a-girl!John Watson is canon.

Hey, can I get a couple more tags for the rec I want to post tomorrow?

character: alfredo llamosa
pairing: marcus bell/ms. hudson/alfredo llamosa

Thanks!

Can I ask why this threesome is considered too rare for a tag that I will immediately use, but there's a tag for, for example, "pairing: jw/sh/irene/mary" which has never been used in a rec and has even only been used on AO3 four times?

And looking to the future, I'm also planning on reccing fics with Sherlock/Gregson, Joan/Marcus and Joan/Ms. Hudson as pairings. . . are those pairings too rare for a tag? And will the Joan/Moriarty fic I'm going to rec go under the existing "pairing: jw/moriarty" tag, or does it need a "pairing: joan watson/moriarty" tag?

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-05-06 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, cool. I'll come back to ask for the "character: irene adler-jamie moriarty" and "pairing: joan watson/irene adler-jamie moriarty" tags (or however you want to list them) when I'm ready to post that rec.

What was the verdict on rarity in regards to the other pairings? Should I ask for pairing tags when I'm ready to rec the fics I mentioned before (Sherlock/Gregson, Joan/Marcus, Joan/Ms. Hudson) or do you not want the pairing tags proliferating like that?

Thanks for all your help!

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-05-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I get that "character: irene adler|jamie moriarty" tag you mentioned for the fic rec I just posted? (Yahtzee's fic Death Before Dusk.) Thanks!

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-05-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks! I'll keep that in mind. (Though I don't *think* I'll need any more tags for this month...)

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2014-05-29 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I lied. Can I get one last tag, for "character: alistair moore" on the rec I posted this morning?

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2014-06-22 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Would it be possible to add a tag for something like content: unrequited love or content: one-sided? I don't think the content: ust tag quite covers it.

I've just posted a rec: "Fic Rec: Rainy Season".

Would it be possible to have a character tag for Inspector Hopkins, please?

I've just posted a rec: "Fic Rec: The Very Best Times".

I don't know how you feel about adding a pairing tag for "Mrs. Hudson/Margaret". It's a minor pairing for the fic but the author has tagged it on AO3, and I think it's fairly significant within the story.

Hello ^^ Sorry to bother you again.

I've just posted a rec: "Fic Rec: Safely Delivered". I was wondering if it would be possible to have a character tag for Mrs. Hudson's terrier? I do realise it's highly unlikely that the tag will be needed again, but the terrier is the narrator and main character for the fic.

[identity profile] phoenixfalls.livejournal.com 2016-07-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Just posted a fic rec for the movie "Art in the Blood." At the moment I've just tagged it "verse: other movies," but I wasn't sure if that was correct, as there are non-Holmesian movie crossover recs in that tag. So is that tag intended for movie adaptations that are too rare to get their own tag, or do you want a distinct tag for every Holmesian adaptation? If the latter, can I get a "verse: art in the blood" tag? If the former, obviously, I'll just leave it as is. :)

Also, I looked but didn't see a "content: art" tag, which I would have used if it was available. It's a major theme in the fic, and I know I've seen other art-focused Holmes fics (though obviously not as many as the music-focused ones) so if you guys are willing I'd love to get a "content: art" tag too.

My most recent fic rec, for "to cradle the world in his hands," could use "character: tennyson" and "content: disability" tags, please!
