Reccer's comments:  There is so much to love about this fic.  First and foremost, it is a good solid case fic, with a plot worthy of canon.  Although not particularly graphic, it includes scenes from the victims' POV, which brings an immediacy to the crimes that really draws the reader in. The OCs are wonderfully three dimensional, and Sherlock is at his best and more annoying.  The chapters seem to just fly by.

It is also a great example of a friendship fic between John and Sherlock.  As much as I love sh/jw slash, it is nice to read a fic that shows two people can have an emotional connection without sex.  And that emotional connection is so well written that sex would seem almost superfluous.  Even the most ardent shipper should feel content.

I also love what this fic does for Sally Donovan, who is often one dimensional in fanfic and (IMHO) got the short end of the stick in canon.  This story builds naturally on what we know of her but makes her much more real.  (It was written before Season 2 so somewhat AU because of that).

All in all, a satisfying read.

Wow -- I was JUST rereading portions of this story before seeing this rec. It is simply my favorite. It is post-series one and so might be considered out-dated, but it was actually quite fascinating to read again after series two -- and see all the ways in which verity anticipated elements that would be included in the new episodes. Some of the dialogue is eerily similar, and the themes...
