Pairing: John/Sherlock, OFC/OFC are the main pairings
Length: 119,503

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Ireland, 1920. There's a war on, but no one seems to be playing by the rules. John Watson, injured and unemployed after his time at the Front, joins up with the special forces sent over to keep the peace, but when he meets Sherlock Holmes, the second son of the local lord, he begins to lose track of which side he is on.

Reccer's comments: True history AUs are rare indeed in any fandom, primarily because it takes so much research and practice to richly communicate a complex foreign culture and tell a good fictional story. Most history AUs require years of research to get to the point where the author can adroitly share the cultural and social realities of the peoples living in the past. Therefore, it's no surprise that most authors find it already challenge enough to skillfully create a genre AU like a Western. It's frankly a miracle that this fandom has been blessed with more than one history AU, let alone more than one that is as beautifully wrought as this one.

That lbmisscharlie loves 20th-century Irish and British history is made abundantly clear from the first chapter. John Watson, soldier of King and Country, is not patrolling Afghanistan, but another restive part of the British Empire, Ireland, just as England's grip is slipping. Although BBC!John never has reservations about his deployment to Afghanistan or what he did there, the John of this story will grow to question what he does in Ireland. Without slipping into overt preachiness, the author makes vivid the cultural clashes and how the characters choose to navigate them. Both sides commit atrocities, leaving one wondering who really is in the right.

John and the other canonical characters like Sherlock and Molly are deftly smoothed into their AU roles. For the most part, the political, social, and cultural beliefs and values they express and act on as English and Irish of the 1920s are blended skillfully with the traits of the BBC characters. Alterations to characters are made purposefully. For example, John is a not an officer or doctor in this fic, something that allows the author to play with class differences in England and in Ireland. Him not being a doctor is, more than once, subtly presented as a lack; something John could be, but never had the opportunity given his social class (several rungs below ACD's Watson for sure and maybe below BBC!John as well).

Of the many OCs, Eva stands out. Both Eva and Molly demonstrate the challenges of women living in Ireland during the troubles of the 1920s. They might support Irish independence, but the violence is personally painful, compelling them to look or hope for alternatives to the high costs of war. These women might risk themselves for Sherlock at different moments of the plot, but it is clear they have lives and concerns outside of Sherlock's Work.

Apart from the layered portrayals of major and minor characters, there is the vibrant sense of place throughout. From the bloody fields of the Continent near the end of WWI, to London and many locations in Ireland (primarily in and around Macroom), the scenery is beautifully rendered, often amplifying the mood of a particular scene. One of many examples is a cinematic rendering of the interior of the Honan Chapel on the grounds of University College in Cork, a setting that conveys the menace and mystery of what is facing John, before suddenly inspiring a brief moment of wonder and nostalgia:

Scrubbing his hands through his hair, John looks around the small chapel once more. The weak candlelight barely penetrates the dark corners, its flickering light producing strange, monstrous shadows in the lurking depths. Bracing one hand on the pew, John hauls himself to his feet and makes his way to the wall. Thrusting the taper in front of him, he traces the walls with his hand as he surveys the perimeter, noting anything that could be used as a weapon: this heavy candelabra, that bible stand, the blunt granite edge of the font. The altar is bare but for an embroidered altar cloth; underneath is empty.

From the altar, John walks down the steps back into the nave, testing the stability of the pews as he passes down the centre aisle. Dead ahead, St Patrick in his emerald robes offers a benediction, while down each side of the nave saints less familiar pass judgement. Pausing in the middle of the aisle, his eye is captured by a brilliant column of blue, its deep tones blending to amethyst in the fading light, which leads to an imperious face with a sharp, beaked nose. But for the long mass of crimson curls, the face, with the haughty set of its eyes and the thrusting, stubborn chin, could be familiar. Some forgotten ancestor of Sherlock’s, perhaps? Amused, John steps closer, craning his neck to examine the details, when his eye focuses and he frowns.

Surrounding the figure, at feet and head, are sparkling, crimson bees, their wingspan the breadth of a man’s spread palm. In one hand, the figure holds a miniature of the chapel, formed from golden beeswax, and John is startlingly thrown back to the summer. To Sherlock’s outstretched thumb, coated in honey, to his caring hands on the hives. John’s laugh, when it breaks the silence, is hoarse, peculiar and cracked. Beekeepers, watching him.

I could go on and on about the many virtues of this lovingly crafted fic, but I urge you to see for yourself!

Author's summary: Sherlock won't give up looking for Moriarty; John is losing patience. Neither of them are coping as well as they would like. (Post episode 1.03, The Great Game)

Reccer's comments: This is another of the first stories I read in the BBC fandom, and I still find it wonderfully emotionally complex and intriguing. Like many authors in the hiatus between S1 and S2, BlackEyedGirl imagined a scenario in which the bomb at the end of The Great Game did explode -- Sherlock and John each emerge alive and to some degree traumatized, but the fact that they shared the same inciting experience does not mean that they understand one another's reactions to it. They are each aware that the other is hurting, but they don't know how to talk about it and they misread one another repeatedly while still doing their best to protect each other.

John, in particular, is very worried about Sherlock's seeming obsession with catching Moriarty, and he thinks it is a sign that Sherlock is captivated by the challenge he represents even though it is likely to get both John and Sherlock killed. The truth, of course, proves to be more complex than that.

This is an insightful character study, an ambiguous but beautiful romance, a journey through the aftermath of trauma and a story that kept surprising me the further I read. There were a few lines and turns of phrase that felt like they swept a rug out from under me.

(That being said, the story is unbetaed and there are a few SPAG errors, if that kind of thing bothers you. But it really is cleanly and cleverly written, and I encourage you to give it a try.)

I hope you'll enjoy it.

Author's summary: Sollemnis Populusque Romanus
The year is AD 68. Emperor Nero is on the throne, the Jewish Revolt is nearing its end under the firm hands of Vespasian and his son Titus, and Marcus Caelius Piso Vannus, son of a British freedman and former surgeon to the Fifteenth Apollonian Legion, has just returned from the provinces with an injured shoulder and no veteran's benefits to rent a shabby room in the shadow of the city wall. Thrust into his life, however, comes Amulius Cornelius Celatus -- a noble man from an ancient family, with good hair, a better toga, and the biggest ego this side of the Tiber. You wouldn't think they'd end up living together, let alone fighting crime; but then, neither would you think that one shadowy criminal figure orchestrated the fire of 64...
(ancient Rome!AU of Sherlock)

Reccer's comments: An enormously fun and clever AU that transports the whole Sherlock BBC cast to ancient Rome, right around the time the Empire was shaking on its very foundations. The series consists of a retelling/recreation of the series’ episodes, with lots of little winks to the original ACD stories and a very ingenious use of both the setting of Rome and the materials provided at that time which are of course no match for the scientific equipment the Sherlock in the series gets to work with. But the setting gives the author the chance to have Vannus appear as a gladiator and recreate Irene Adler as a vestal virgin, which had me bouncing with glee in my chair.
Celatus is every way as brilliant and haughty as his twenty-first century counterpart and Vannus just as loyal, trustworthy and devoted to his friend as John Watson is.

The author makes frequent use of Latin. This might put people off from reading, but I think it actually heightens the atmosphere the author creates and thus adds to the stories. She’s very thoughtfully provided a translation so this really shouldn’t be a reason not to read.
Anyone who is at least a little bit familiar with the history of Rome and the lay-out of the city around the time will be delighted with the use the author has made of these in the stories. Anyone who isn’t will still get to enjoy herself and learn a lot besides.
The motto of the series for instance had me giggling like mad once I encountered the personage it refers to, Sollemnis Populusque Romanus, such a clever variation - totally befitting of the Sherlock BBC series - on Senatus Populusque Romanus, or was it Sono Pazzi Questi Romani?

Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 11,700 words
Rating: R
Warnings: I think the "R" rating is for the difficult themes, including suicidal thoughts and mental illness; there's also some description of violence though not graphic, and dub-con soul-bondings
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John Watson has been bonded by blood to Sherlock Holmes. Until the day Sherlock dies, they will be tied together. Until the day Sherlock dies, John can't.

Reccer's comments: This is a soul-bonded Reichenbach AU. I adore well-done magical realism, and in this story I find the world-building both economical and compelling, surpassed only by the incisive characterizations. John, especially, is a beautiful trainwreck. The story delves into his intensely fluctuating mental and emotional states without ever losing touch with that part of John Watson that disdains his own drama. The story combines deep angst and conflicted romance with sharp and satisfying humor.

Essentially, this is the story of a haunting, and the way that Sherlock's shade within John's shared soul creates temptations, doubts, beliefs, and ultimately revelations during a truly agonizing hiatus.

Beautifully written and richly imagined, this story is a favorite of mine, although I should say in advance that it ends abruptly and does not really resolve the complex emotional tangle that it has built up. The author has said, though, that their goal was to tell the story of John's mental journey rather than to resolve his relationship with Sherlock, and in that the story succeeds brilliantly. Where he and Sherlock go from there is up to us.

Title: Don't Blink (You Might Be Missed)
Author: anamatics
Pairing: Gen
Length: 31000 words
Rating: T
Warnings: N/A
Verse: Elementary
Author's summary: In mid-December Jessica Delhaney, teacher, 27, wife of an NYPD beat cop, goes missing. A massive manhunt follows, Sherlock and Joan are called in to consult and soon it becomes obvious that nothing about this case is as it seems. A cryptic warning comes from Newgate telling them to be careful, and that the killer has a type. What they don't know is just how accurate that assessment truly was.

Reccer's comments: While still at Newgate, Moriarty learns that Sherlock and Watson are working on a case she knows something about, one that could put Watson in danger. Moriarty isn't finished with Watson herself, and the need to understand how Watson defeated her prompts her to warn Sherlock, even as she questions her own motivations. Joan wants nothing to do with Moriarty because of her continued cruel manipulation of Sherlock, but she can't bring herself to step away from the challenge to beat Moriarty again. She responds to Moriarty on multiple levels: feeling protective of Sherlock; morally and professionally affronted by her crimes; proud and maybe a little arrogant about having defeated her once and wanting to do it again.

I very much appreciate the way Moriarty is presented in this fic, violent and dangerous without remorse. She's confused by her own interest in Joan, especially when it starts to eclipse her wish to yank Sherlock's chain. This isn't a Joan/Moriarty story (although over the course of the 3-part series, of which this is part 1, it gets closer to that) and no one forgets that Moriarty has done terrible things and will continue to do so, despite her surprising-to-everyone actions to save Joan's life.

Written before 2x12, "The Diabolical Kind," and divergent from the show after that.

I also have a soft spot for this fic's verisimilitude in describing the brownstone in winter as a cold, drafty place to live. I've never been able to suspend my own disbelief regarding its apparently magical climate-control on screen. (I'm the first to admit I'm a little obsessed about brownstone details.)

Author's summary: Post Season 3, Mary Watson goes missing, and John has been keeping secrets from Sherlock.

Reccer's comments: This is a post-series 3 fic in which Mary's past catches up to her and everyone associated with her when John sets out on a one-man mission to eliminate everyone who poses a threat to his family. One thing I particularly liked about this was that so often in fics, John has a reactive role, but in this, he actually goes out and gets in trouble without Sherlock and that ends up being the catalyst for everything that follows.

The fic is also full of awesome things like Sherlock getting Valentine's Day right, a badass clown/bodyguard, John using his gun the way it was meant to, a mid-story twist that takes us down a completely unforeseen path, Sherlock taking heinous advantage of the situation, and lots and lots of love. The unvarnished kind you see here:

Excerpt... )

Despite all of that good stuff, it's really quite angsty and involves child endangerment. This fic also contains infidelity, but I thought it treated Mary fairly and redeems her by the end. Although, it's a bittersweet ending. Tissues might be good to have at hand. (No character death.)

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sequel to Ten Days. After ten days of unspeakable torture at the hands of Sherlock's worst enemies, John Watson has returned to Baker Street to live with a man whose death, no matter how fake, still haunts him. But his recovery is not easy, his friendship with Sherlock is strained, and a dangerous but hidden menace continues to threaten them both.

Reccer's comments: This is an intense, gripping case fic that had me at the edge of my seat throughout. Seeing how it's an epic novel length, that's truly saying something. It's the sequel to another fic that I recced almost two years ago, Ten Days. If you haven't yet read Ten Days and don't want any spoilers for that fic, then stop reading NOW.

This story isn't quite as disturbing as its prequel, since it isn't our favourite doctor being put through the ringer this time. The Slash Man contains more lighthearted, even some humorous, moments to break up the overall dark tone of the story, but it's still gut-wrenchingly powerful.

This story takes place Post-Reichenbach, after Sherlock's return, and goes AU after Series 2. It begins two weeks after the end of Ten Days. You'll most likely need to read that one first to understand what's going on. John is recovering from his traumatic ordeal, residing once again at Baker Street and reunited with the once-dead detective. What sets this fic apart from others of its ilk are two things. One is how the author portrays the consequences of Sherlock's decisions on the supporting characters. It's a perfect example of how the actions of one man can send a ripple effect through numerous lives. John is not the only one with scars. The second is the author's skillful weaving of a tale that is equally plot-driven and character-driven. There are plenty of heartwrenching, emotional scenes, but never at the cost of a well-written, exciting mystery.

Before starting this story, the reader should be aware that it ends with quite the cliffhanger. The third and final part of what is to be a trilogy is in the works, but has not been posted yet. So it all depends on how patient you are for a resolution as to whether you decide to read this now or not.

Again, I can't recommend this one enough. Please do give it a try; I think you'll be glad you did.

Reccer's comments: Psychic!John for the win! Full disclosure up front: I was one of the betas for this story. It's an alternate universe bordering on magical realism where John has dreams - nightmares, really - that keep coming true. The only saving grace about them is that John is able to change the outcome, if he recognises what's happening in time. He lives with the fear that the day will come when he will fail to stop what he keeps seeing in his dreams - the death of his best friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes.

Even as a beta I wasn't privy to the ending, so as I read each chapter the suspense just kept building and the uncertainty of the outcome kept me on the edge of my seat. Enjoy!

Here's a bit of an excerpt. Keep in mind that this part takes place in John's dream, not in reality - at least, not yet ;)

Author's summary: In which John almost drowns and the boys talk about affection. Though, in not so many words.

Reccer's comments: In this gorgeous little fic, John almost drowns and Sherlock really, really isn't okay with that. Like so many other stories set after The Great Game, Sherlock is forced to acknowledge just how important John is to him and that he does indeed have a heart. What sets this story apart from other post-pool H/C and Getting Together fics is the narration. For the most part it's a relatively free stream of consciousness which envelops events of past, present and future in a very creative swirl of imagery and which beautifully corresponds with John's barely conscious, drug and pain addled state.

I really love how this story emphasises that Sherlock and John are always there to save each other from falling, drowning, despairing, not just in the physical sense. Also, I simply adore how Sherlock and John talk about their feelings here - it's so abashed and taciturn and awkward, and yet it manages to be incredibly tender and romantic, leaving you with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

Author's summary: 'Time. For the first time John could see it, feel it, taste it like a tangible presence. The years and decades stretched out in front of them, together, were so vivid, so certain. They had all the time in the world. Everything was going to be fine and the things that weren’t, would be. There was time. Plenty of it. The rest of it.'

Reccer's comments: Guh, this fic. This was the fic I rewarded myself with when I was pushing myself to finish a piece I was writing, and it was an extremely viable incentive. It contains one of my favorite set-ups, with John and Sherlock going to Sussex for a couple of weeks, just to get away from things. This often leads to fluff, but there isn't a crumb of fluff to be found here. It's angst, pure and simple, with John and Sherlock - but especially Sherlock - suffering both from the strain of their last, horrific case and under the burden of no longer being able to deny the strong feelings they have for each other.

Although this is presented as the second part of a series, I didn't actually read the first part and I didn't feel like I was missing anything. The slightly disorientating sensation of walking into the middle of things at the beginning isn't due to carryover from the first part of the series, but because of the nonlinear structure of this fic, in which we skip back and forth between the trip to Sussex and the case that is driving them out of the city.

To add another layer of complication, they find themselves in the middle of a new murder investigation in the town they are staying in. It's a rehash of the ACD standby, The Case of the Devil's Foot, but even though I knew what was going to happen, it didn't diminish the emotions arising from the events. The focus isn't on the case, though; it's on John and Sherlock as they try to define their relationship and shift it into something that they both desperately want but are completely unable to articulate.

Here's Sherlock angsting over it:

Excerpt... )

This was written pre-series 3 and as such is set somewhere in an AU-ish area with references to a past Mary who isn't the Mary we meet in the series. But this could actually work just as well as a post-series 3 piece, once Mary is out of the picture via whatever mechanism that turns out to be. ;)

Verse: ACD books, also a crossover with Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald," which is itself playing within the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Author's summary: In a world dominated by an alien monarchy, criminals Sherlock Holmes and John Watson work to take down the royal establishment while detective James Moriarty and his associate Sebastian Moran try to track them down. Also featuring Irene Adler, and Roderick Maclean, who did in fact exist. AU based on Neil Gaiman's phenomenal short story "A Study in Emerald."

Reccer's comments: I have never read Lovecraft or Gaiman, but this nightmarish dystopia drew me in immediately and the story, though darker and more violent than my usual fic tastes, kept me constantly absorbed, intrigued, and excited, and occasionally it completely pulled the rug from under me. It was darkly operatic in the best sense, theatrical and unashamedly Victorian but grounded in truly complex characterizations with delightful touches of dry wit. Throughout this story, we slowly learn that no one is quite what they seem.

It has one of the best Watson narrative voices I have ever encountered; the story at times switches to other POV characters in clearly marked sections, but the majority of the story is Watson's. He and Holmes are more broken, more desperate, more afraid and more bloody than I am used to seeing them, but they live in a horror show of a world, and despite it all they are deeply recognizable: Holmes fights for justice, and Watson fights for Holmes.

The story is beautifully written and paced, and the main secondary characters -- Irene and Moran -- are particularly interesting. A truly engrossing read.

Author's summary: Watson inadvertently lets slip that his war injuries are far more extensive and crippling than he has formerly admitted. Holmes encourages him to confront his fears and find new hope.

Reccer's comments: I read this story back when I was discovering Holmes/Watson fanfiction and was struck by the mix of delicacy and realism on the author's part. They did a wonderful job with voices and tone, notably at the beginning: that Holmes discovers the true nature of Watson's wound not through deducing, but because of ill-applied levity and sarcasm felt very much in character. The author's choice to show Watson as entirely straight makes his trust in Holmes, along with his decision to test his own limits by letting Holmes accede that most intimate secret, all the more...touching, indeed. The reader will find no Healing Cock trope here, no miraculous conversion, merely an open ending - all judicious choices to me. The bittersweet, yet profoundly tender atmosphere of the whole piece gives it a very special charm and makes it one of my favourite h/c fics.

Author's summary: none that I know of, so I'll provide one. John Watson is upset when he finds that his dreams of war have vanished. He is summoned into the presence of Sherlock, aka the Immortal named Dream - the first of many upsetting (and thrilling) discoveries.

Reccer's comments: The first thing I should say is that while this comics was introduced as a Sherlock/Sandman crossover, you needn't have read Geiman's work to engage with it. (I still haven't.) The drawings have their own strength, born of the author's expressionistic use of black and white (I have a soft spot for this version of The Coat); the plot is original, with enough winks at the BBC canon to weave the familiar into the new and keep the reader's curiosity alert. The author steps in once or twice to explain about the Endless, and that's all we need to know. It works powerfully, as we share John's oniric experiences with twist upon jolting twist.

The alliance between art and plot becomes truly impressive as the tension rises and the characters' interaction turns more and more dramatic. The crossover works, because the casting does suit the characters, even when the fusion seemed less convincing at first (Irene is what? Oh, but...of course, in this context...etc. etc.). I won't spoil the ending, but I found it entirely satisfying. And for the Lestrade fans who loved his cameo appearances, there's even a little celebratory comics.:)

When he stops dreaming altogether, John tries to get his dreams back, running headlong into an adventure that changes his life forever.

Reccer's comments: NavyDream demonstrates that BBC's Sherlock and Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series The Sandman work beautifully together. John and Sherlock are the primary focus, but Irene, Henry, Molly, and Lestrade are engaging minor characters. I'm not sure I should say much about which characters play which roles in this fusion to avoid spoilers, but I will share that John is a human being, whereas Sherlock is Morpheus.

ND clearly has experience with layout conventions of comics and manga, for rather than sticking only with a series of square panels, which could get monotonous, they play with panel numbers, shapes, and sizes in a way that supports the energy and dynamism of the twisty plot. Perspective and framing and other artistic elements further underline the mood and action of the narrative.

One pleasure of following this work over the months it was posted was watching the artist's skill and confidence grow. Some minor errors in grammar made it into the script, but I feel ND did fine for someone whose first language is not English. I look forward to seeing the artist apply what they learned in their new Sherlock/Dr. Who crossover comic!

Author's summary: Sherlock takes on an obvious case (barely a 4) and is forced to re-examine what it means to see and observe.

Reccer's comments: Serpentynka is new to fanfiction, but I was blown away by their magnum opus, Sketchy. Blown away as in they have written what will doubtless be on my list of best Sherlock fics of 2014. I was first drawn in by the masterful Sherlock POV, then charmed by the main OC, Alex Nussbaum, an artist who reluctantly agrees to tutor Sherlock in drawing (some of Sherlock's art is scattered about the text). Initial distrust eventually grows into a warm, honest friendship:

Long non-spoilery excerpt... )

The rich depiction of places (primarily Norfolk, London, and Vienna) and an organic sense of structure brings additional depth to the world of this story. What kept me enthralled, however, what made me feel 100,000+ words were not enough, was the slowly evolving relationship of Sherlock and John, underlined by rapid POV switches and a dynamic approach to combining narrative, dialogue, and interior thoughts:

Another non-spoilery excerpt... )

The reader is treated not to just the movement from friends to lovers, but a detailed evolution of their romantic and sexual relationship in the months that follow the admissions of love and attraction. We experience the external and internal obstacles that challenge Sherlock and John, realizing before the end how much that relationship has deepened, despite their own considerable flaws and Mycroft's well-meant but heavy-handed "tests".

Add to all this erotic storytelling, initiated by John and later attempted by Sherlock. John's steamy fantasies are realistic enough to be re-imagined in the "real world" (as some are!), whereas Sherlock's are more overtly biographical and can be hot or intensely moving (sometimes both).

One of John's stories... )

If you love reading about the visual arts and the skill of craftspeople, this is a work for you. If you adore sophisticated, sensual fiction that repays multiple readings, if you enjoy memorable OCs, and treasure IC romance between two flawed characters who struggle (and sometimes fail) to communicate, this is the work for you.

Reccer's comments: A third post-"Paint It Black" recommendation for you (I told you all it inspired a lot of fic!). Canonically, we've seen only a small taste of the mother/daughter dynamic of Mary and Joan Watson, and it is something that gets a closer inspection in this story, along with tension and angst galore from Joan.

Title: Give Me the Quiet Things
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lady_t_220
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: It doesn't say, but I'd guess around 12,000-15,000 words
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: description of traumatic injury
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John had never been afraid of asking "What's the worst that can happen?" He was pretty sure he'd already seen it.

Reccer's comments: In this story, John has amnesia in the aftermath of a terrible injury he suffered during a case gone wrong. I love that the story captures the strangeness of John's experience, his sense of frustration at the expectations of those closest to him who want him to be the person he was before, the way he feels like a stranger in someone else's body. Sherlock's reactions are so different from everyone else's, so free from expectation, with a low-level constancy that John comes to rely on without realizing it. He's restrained, just muted enough to be soothing when John finds most interactions uncomfortable and overcharged. Eventually, though, John sees that he is living Sherlock's nightmare more than his own, and begins to suspect that Sherlock's silence has more than one motive.

I can't put my finger on precisely what it is about this characterization of Sherlock that I love so much, but it feels very real to me. Also, I personally enjoy that the story pulls off the amnesia trope with no dub-con, and that Sherlock and John actually talk through a load of complicated issues, without wrapping everything up in a bow either. Probably my favorite hurt/comfort in the BBC 'verse.

Title: On Afghanistan's Plains https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4029558/1/On-Afghanistan-s-Plains
Author: Pompey
Pairing: Gen
Length: 22,839
Rating: K+
Warnings: None, although there is some gore
Verse: ACD books
Author's summary: A look at what happened to Watson, from the Battle of Maiwand to his return to England. As this is a prequel to STUDY IN SCARLET, Holmes makes no appearance whatsoever.
Reccer's comments: Pompey has constructed a fabulously detailed and meticulously researched account of Watson's service in Afghanistan. What was it like to be in the disastrous battle at Maiwand? What exactly did Murray do to save Watson? What were the events that rendered Watson "thin as a lath and brown as a nut" and wrecked his health before his meeting with Sherlock Holmes? This fic could have been adapted as a movie script - it's that good. No slash, but you won't miss it.
