Title: The Adventure of the Delirious Detective
Author: Mithen (AO3)
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 6066 words
Rating: G /Pre-Slash
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: Sherlock is back in 221B, but John isn't yet--until he receives a frantic phone call from Mrs. Hudson begging for his help.

Reccer's comments: This fic is based on ACD’s The Adventure of the Dying Detective and was written post Season 2. I like the underlying humour of this piece, and even if Sherlock’s way of trying to earn John’s forgiveness is very… Sherlock, it still feels a bit less manipulative than what happened in canon (it’s what needs to be done to solve a case!) and it’s a less angsty reconciliation than many written before TEH.

Verse: Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (1980)
Author's summary: Holmes makes a little confession over breakfast, and Watson does a lot of internal giggling.

Reccer's comments: The Whitehead and Pickering television adaptation of 1979/1980 is one of my favorite Holmes/Watson pairs — [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles described them recently as "a charming version of Holmes and Watson—devoted to each other, with a nice line in banter," and I can't improve on that.

This little story is note-perfect in its execution of Whitehead and Pickering's teasing, affectionate push-pull. I'm of two minds as to whether Whitehead's Holmes would ever say "I love you" aloud, but if he did, this is precisely the way it would go down. Fans of the series will recognize these two as utterly themselves, but no specific knowledge of their canon is needed to appreciate this bit of humorous fluff: you only have to appreciate a Holmes and Watson who truly, sincerely, enjoy each other, and are not shy about letting it show.

Verse: Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles [AKA LEGO Hound of the Baskervilles (Tuzarfilms)] / The LEGO Movie (2014)
Author's summary: Watson is still recuperating from his last adventure – he’s not so sure he wants to be The Special.

Reccer's comments: I was introduced to Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles, AKA LEGO Hound, last autumn and I loved it. (It’s a delightful little film on YouTube—only 42 minutes long. There’s a link in the author’s notes if you want to take a look.) And when I signed up for Holmestice the following month, more in hope than expectation I added it to my list of wants.

So I was thrilled when my assigned author chose to write something in this ‘verse. The film is deliberately cracky but the makers clearly love Holmes and Watson and their relationship, and have huge respect for their source material. In her fic [livejournal.com profile] gardnerhill keeps that delicate balance so well. And her idea of doing a crossover with the official LEGO Movie was inspired. I must admit I still haven’t seen that but I found a quick look at the trailers and other info on IMDB got me caught up enough. And you really don’t need to have seen either film to enjoy this story.

The fic begins just after Holmes and Watson have returned back to London from Dartmoor. They are confronted by a strange young woman who—somewhat to Holmes’ chagrin—seems to think Watson is the special one. And so a very funny adventure begins, filled with wonderful characters and brilliant lines—and Watson remaining resolutely and amusingly unimpressed throughout by The Prophecy that says only he can bring down the villain...

Reccer's comments: Well. You may be looking at that warning and that summary and thinking, ‘This really isn’t for me.’ But this is death played firmly for laughs. The story begins with what seems to be a retelling of The Blue Carbuncle. However, things quickly take a very different path…

This is so well-structured—the joke builds and builds. There are so many wonderful lines, and the story is laugh out loud funny. Just perfect.

Verse: Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (1980)
Author's summary: Holmes stood; the infant steadied itself with a fistful of his waistcoat. “Watson, I am given to understand that this is—”

“Violet Victoria Mary Smith-Watson,” I said, hearing the death knell of my easy, bachelor life with Holmes.

Reccer's comments: In recent months I have had the pleasure of being introduced to many new Sherlock Holmes ‘verses. This is one of the more unknown ones. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson was a 1979-80 series, starring Geoffrey Whitehead as Holmes and Donald Pickering as Watson. Going by this fic, and also by the one episode I’ve seen, this is a charming version of Holmes and Watson—devoted to each other, with a nice line in banter.

The story is shown from Watson’s POV as he is abruptly given the responsibility of caring for the orphaned baby of a distant cousin. We follow him as he moves from thinking of himself merely as Violet’s guardian to accepting he’s now her parent. And also accepting that he was never, to use a contemporary term, a single father after all...

The fic is sweet, though never sentimental, and the tone is essentially humorous and lighthearted. But that is tempered with an acknowledgement of the realities of life in the Victorian era—especially how vulnerable children could be—and the realities of Holmes and Watson’s adventurous life.

The author links to a relevant Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson episode in her notes for your convenience, but you don’t need to have seen that or any of the series to thoroughly enjoy this heartwarming story.

Title: Albion and the Woodsman
Author: Glenmore
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 54,437 words
Rating: Not Rated (I would rate it Mature)
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Post Series 3. Sherlock and John are devastated after Mary Morstan makes her final moves. Sherlock relapses at the crack house, John walks around the world ...and a lot happens in between. Parentlock, in the good way.

Reccer's comments: If you are the type of reader who, like me, generally avoids first-person storytelling, then do yourself a favor and make an exception for this one. It's one of those rare fics that successfully paints Sherlock Holmes as a devoted single parent. The story is in turns funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.

It is told from Sherlock's POV, and begins post-series 3. It starts out after Sherlock has been shot for a second time by Mary Watson, an event that leads to her arrest and to John needing to disappear for awhile in order to get his head together. He leaves for a year-long walkabout around the world, leaving Sherlock devastated and returning to drugs. Of course he cleans himself up, only to be confronted several months later by a pregnant stranger claiming that Sherlock is the father.

We get to watch Sherlock fall immediately in love with his son Albion, and then take to single fatherhood like a duck takes to water. As Sherlock grows into his new role, he continues to pine for John and wait for his eventual return. The way Sherlock refers to John in his absence by different epithets such as 'eleven jumpers Watson' and 'Three pairs of brogues Watson' kept me delighted and laughing throughout.

We are introduced to several OC’s, not the least of which is Albion himself. His nanny gives soldier!John a run for his money (once he returns), and even the mother who abandoned him manages to turn her life around and gain at least a smidgen of our respect.

There are struggles and lessons to be learned, not the least of which that 'happily ever after' does not mean what all the fairy-tales claim. Reality is much more complicated, but all the more rewarding because of it.

Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Today was the first standardized patient interaction, and John was nervous, and very nearly late. He knew it was silly, but the act of finally introducing himself as “Doctor Watson”, of laying hands on another living, breathing human aside from his learning partner for physical exam maneuvers...in a medical capacity...well, it felt huge. He took one last deep breath and rapped three times on the door of exam room 221-B, listening for acknowledgement from the patient within. “Oh, do come in,” drawled the richest baritone voice John had ever heard.

Reccer's comments: Anatomy lessons have never been put to better use. Most medical realism/kink fics I have seen are angsty and/or dark, but this is a fun romantic comedy of ophthalmoscopes, dissections, physical exams, dirty mnemonics, and more Latin terms for body parts than you can shake a stick at. A med school AU that doubles as a Six Thatchers pastiche chock full of canon references, flirting, and insane wish fulfillment.

As a side note, if you are easily grossed out, I would recommend downloading the fic to read rather than viewing it on-site, as a few of the embedded end-of-chapter images are anatomically graphic (a dissected human heart, the inside of an eyeball, and cutaway diagrams of veins and nerves).

Author's summary:Sherlock takes a remarkably early retirement at 47, and convinces John that a change of pace would do them both good. They buy an old cottage on the South Downs, and exchange their nonstop life in Baker Street for quiet contemplation, bee studies, and book writing.

They might go completely insane, but sometimes it takes stepping outside of the life you're living to find the life you want.

Reccer's comments:I have such a thing for retirement stories, they melt me into such happy goo. This one is warm and so charming. This was gorgeous from start to finish, it made me all warm and fuzzy inside. This fic was like a warm fuzzy blanket wrapped around me. :)))))

I adored the lovely imagery the bathtub scene and bees(Sherlock must retire with bees) were delightful. Also the slow burn between them she captured the ache of finally requited passion.

Here is a small excerpt....Sherlock takes one last look out to the horizon, mouth downturned and brow furrowed, before seeming to shake himself and catching up to John with a few long-legged strides. John turns back toward the path cut into the cliffs, climbing steadily toward the rolling downs already green and lush in the weak April warmth.

They reach the top and Sherlock strikes toward the west, back to where their hired Land Rover sits a mile away in a public carpark. John falls into step beside him and takes a deep breath.

“I expected a case,” he starts. “A bit chilly for a walk, really, so. D’you mind telling me what we’re doing out here?”
Sherlock doesn’t even pause, simply tucks his head down against the wind and continues walking.

“I’m retiring,” he says simply.

Author's summary: Halloween, 1989: John and Sherlock both have big plans for the night, but some serial killers have the worst possible timing.

Reccer's comments: I went into this thinking, okay, a fun little Halloween story. Then BAM! i got hit hard in the feels. First off there's the case, which is a fabulous tongue-in-cheek romp through the 80s that leaves bodies galore in its wake. Then there's all the fun of dressing up for Halloween in sexy, subtext-laden costumes. But finally (most importantly), of course, there are John and Sherlock pining desperately for each other until they finally get a clue, and it’s at that point that the fic takes off from being a good-natured dashabout and becomes something of real substance and beauty. This is one of those stories that you think is just going to be a quick distraction, but ends up sneaking into your heart and settling there.

Author's summary:John starts writing gay romance while holed up in hospital. Sherlock reads the first fic on accident, and it sticks with him for days. He can't help but read more from the unknown writer. Little does he know, the writer isn't exactly unknown to him. The writer happens to be the A&E Doctor he's feuding with.

Christ, can you imagine what he'll think once he finds out?

Reccer's comments:This was an absolute delight from start to finish. They way she wrote both John and Sherlock was just brilliant. I adore John as a Doctor that uses his free time to write slash fanfic how fun. And she wrote a Sherlock that was secure about so many things, yet so insecure about anything to do with feelings or love.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fluffy, silly, angsty, happily ending wonderful AU......His screen name, DoctorJohn, always made him cringe, but it had been all he could think of at the time. He was comfortable telling himself it was the pain medication that took away all his sense of decency, and had decided to be happy that he hadn't gone with DoctorLove. That had unfortunately been an actual option he'd filtered past.

Since he didn't have the Internet, he was able to write in the notepad app without his moniker staring down at him the whole time, which helped. He already had a premise in mind; the lonely doctor. Cliché, yes, but he'd found that in this type of writing it was less about whether something was a cliché or not, and more about whether you could make it palpable. Your character could bugger the delivery boy as long as your readers wanted to know who came first, and where.

His lonely doctor ended up sitting in a coffee shop flirting with a nurse.

At the beginning of all this, when he'd started writing his own fics, he wondered if he always fashioned the main character after himself. When he realised that, yes, he did, he wondered if that mattered. He hated wondering on that alone. He wanted to have a place other than the comments section where he could talk to other writers, a place less public.

You should read or re read this wonderful story, you will be happy you did.

Author's summary:John Watson, the new Earl of Saughton, is madly in love with the beautiful Mary Morstan. But he has returned from the Peninsular War to find his family on the brink of ruin and his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. He has little choice when he is introduced to Mycroft Holmes, a civil servant of apparently unlimited wealth and no social ambitions for himself - but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his only brother, the unorthodox and irascible Omega Sherlock Holmes. Can John forget the woman he loved and find happiness with a man so very different from his lost love?
Reccer's comments:This story was amazing from start to finish. She did a lot of research into that time period and you could tell. I found her characters engaging just brilliant. She has such a way with words...This story was a delight and such a fun ride. I will want to come back and re read this gem over again. So many lines were perfect I loved this one of so many..... Sherlock had lifted his head and there was an amused look on his face as he stared at his husband. "John, I am quite aware that you are a good and moral man, and that your words and thoughts on that matter are genuine. You are my moral compass, a fixed point in a changing age."

Her Sherlock is amazing and a little bit reckless but her John's such a gentleman and caring doctor, until the need to deliver a brutal beat down arises. :))))))))) They make the best team together as always.

Reccer's comments:This story was stunning and brilliant through out until the ending. What a glorious time period this was and it flowed beautifully. She had such a way with words, the flow of the story was perfect. This story was exquisite and all the little details made it come to life.

This fic was a delicious slow burn and I do looooooove those. All the secondary characters were lovely. Mrs. Hudson was the sweetest.

One of my favorite moments well one of so many is the turning point in chapter 9: "They watch each other closely, the scared doctor and the quiet detective. John's hand hovers between them, paused in indecision like his brain. Sherlock, eyes still locked with John's, reaches up to encircle John's wrist, slow and careful. His fingers are warm against John's pulse point and the contact soothes him more than he thinks it has any right to. “John.” John makes a quiet noise in the back of his throat, almost a question. “Mm?” “Let's go home.”

*happy sighs* If you have never read this you should you will love it soooooooo much.

A Curious Incident: In which Sherlock has to see a man about a dog.

Reccer's comments: The first three parts of this series provide some of the most sheerly hilarious Sherlock-and-John interactions I've ever read. Oh, the shoutiness and the carping and the complaining and the threats and the mutual adoration! The fourth is set post-Reichenbach. I've tagged for humor on account of the first three parts; the last changes mood starkly (but bear in mind your reccer requires happy endings).

Author's summary: “It’s frankly alarming,” said the Sherlock in the fishnet top, “watching you simper and fawn and make puppy eyes over John like a … sad, gay baby.”
Sherlock’s mouth fell open. “I am not a sad gay baby!”
“Yes, you are,” said Irene.
“Well, what is he, then?” sputtered Sherlock. “Splaying his legs open so everyone can see his cock through those trousers. Sitting there leering at the rest of us like some sort of superior … Dark fuck prince.”

Currently a WIP. Last updated July 2015. There should be one more chapter according to the author. However, as chapter three to five are pretty much stand alone's you can really go ahead and read!

Reccer's comments: This fic is proof of the human mind’s remarkable talent to turn something vile into something hilarious. Written in response to the vagaries imposed upon last year’s 221B con by a this fic has the show’s characters discuss fanfic, gender politics, sexual roles, ship wars, and fandom, as they search for the perfect incarnation of Toplock.

The author masterfully plays with tropes and head!canons as exploited in the series by Moffat and Gatiss, by fanfic writers (the author included) and readers and shows that the pen, especially when wielded with a humour that manages to cast everyone in a satirical light, truly is the strongest weapon ever invented.

The fic heads off with lots of clever banter flying around the living room. Anthea presides and has a hard time keeping the various characters in their respective incarnations in check. We get to meet DarkFuckPrince!Sherlock, GayBaby!Sherlock, JustTransport!Sherlock, Angry!John (well, he doesn’t get laid, obviously), Saint!John and BAMF!John, Virgin!Sherlock and all these incarnations, traipsing around 221B’s living room together, are totally IC. As are Irene, Mycroft, Anthea, Mrs Hudson, Jim and Molly and even Sebastian Moran. Because no fic featuring Jim is complete without a truly creepy Moran in the background. Fie Moftiss.

Once Anthea has waved her magic wand and decided upon the various pairings we follow those to the rooms allotted them for yet more talk, debate, argument, conference, exchange, review, conversation, consideration, dialogue, consultation, seminar, discourse, deliberation, symposium, colloquy, confabulation not to mention examination, investigation, analysis, scrutiny and dissection that will have you screaming with laughter and chuckling over so much cleverness. Then in each chapter the whole delicious concoction gets topped off with some scorchingly-hot sex, with Sherlock topping of course. Yes, even GayBaby!Virgin!Sherlock gets to do the topping.

What really blew me away in this fic however is the encounter in chapter four, between JustTranpost!Sherlock and a beautifully brave and tender Irene. Even if you don’t read the rest of the fic, read this chapter at least for the wonderful insight into their relationship. You won’t regret it.

Reccer's comments: I know of few fics with a more adequate summary than this one. What we get in this fic is a rendition of that fateful evening Sherlock and John moved into Baker Street, told from the POV of Mrs Turner’s married ones.
Nothing ever happens in Baker Street so Matt and Ryan are almost constantly glued to the windows to goggle and speculate at the perpetual comings and goings, apart from the time they spend eavesdropping with the aid of a glass to the wall.

The author has a wonderful sense of truly dry British humour. The second sentence produced a smile on my face. Halfway through I was swiping my eyes and my sides were splitting from laughter. And yet, ridiculous as Matt and Ryan seem the reader does sympathise with them. Only imagine ending up with a pair of neighbours like Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.

Reccer's comments:
Here is a comic series which forms a coherent narrative if read in order, though each strip can also be enjoyed individually. One thing to be aware of about this series is that it is absolutely hilarious, so you might want to read it in a location where loud laughter would not be a problem! Dr. Watson's Inner Monologue is based on the premise that both Watson and Holmes are longing for each other, but neither is aware of the other's feelings. Angst and hilarity ensues! Highlights include Holmes's drugged fever-dream of Watson in a bathing suit, among other delights. Lots of sexually-frustrated Watson!rage and sighing, gooey-eyed Holmes.

The drawings have an almost art nouveau feel to them, with their swirling, stylised flourishes and harmonious limited palettes, and the writing is just as effective as in any professional comic strip.
