Title: Crazy For Love
Author: prettyvk
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 98739
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author Summary: It starts with five words.  "Is my father really dead?"  Or maybe, that's how it ends.

Reccer's Comments:  When Sherlock meets Moriarty's son at the conclusion of his mission and brings him home to Baker Street, his life is already upended from his death and 'resurrection'.  I was just as taken with the troubled son of our favorite arch-nemesis as Sherlock and didn't mind at all that the story reads as about 100,000 words of setup for further adventures (it is listed as the first in a series).  As I see it, after years fanfic, anything that keeps me reading into the small hours of the night is a resounding win.

Verse: Sherlock BBC crossover with Nativity! (the movie)

Author's summary: Fusion between Sherlock (BBC) and Nativity! (2009 movie starring Martin Freeman). Sherlock is a primary school teacher and John is assigned to be his classroom assistant. Together, they are charged with putting on the school's Nativity play. What could possibly go wrong?

Reccer's comments: This is a fun story. It stays true to Sherlock while still managing to keep the flavor of Nativity!, not an easy feat as they are very different works. Her Sherlock POV voice is convincing, and her John working with the kids is a joy. Heartwarming Christmas fun. With sex, boundary issues, and Moriarty. Highly recommended.

Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: approx. 10 hours in three files
Rating: G (as posted, but due to language and themes this may not be appropriate for all ages)
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: 'The blog of Eugenia Watson' by madlori read aloud. I like to think of this not so much as a blog but as the first draft of my inevitably best-selling memoirs. My Life In an Unconventional Family. How unconventional? Well, I live with my divorced parents and my dad's husband. How's that for starters? Trust me, it gets weirder. My name is Eugenia Watson, but you can call me Genie. I'm sixteen. This is my life.

Reccer's comments: The fic this is based on, The Blog of Eugenia Watson by Mad_Lori, was already recced here, but this podfic deserves a rec all on its own, as I feel it's one of the classic podfics of the fandom.

What I love so much about this podfic is that lunchee's voice matches the character of Eugenia so well. It takes no effort whatsoever to hear the 16-year-old narrator in the accent and intonation. It's not like listening to someone read a story. It's like hearing Eugenia speaking of her first-hand experiences as the youngest member of this unorthodox family.

Even if you've already read the fic, hearing it brought to life like this makes all of the stories and emotions so much more vivid. You can hear her anguish over Sherlock being injured; her matter-of-fact acceptance of her mother bringing 'corpse stench' into the flat, tempered by the obligatory teenage whinging; her starry-eyed indulgence of her father and step-father cuddling; and her occasional mild disgust when glimpsing them doing anything more.

Definitely download this for your next trip, and enjoy the story without eye fatigue or motion sickness. ;)

(P.S. The underage sexuality tag is for a mention only, nothing explicit, which is why I haven't included it as a warning.)

Title: Ours Series
Author: faviconKeelieThompson1
Pairing: John/Sherlock, Mycroft/OMC
Length: 76,922 words
Rating: Teen to Mature
Warnings: Major character death, dub-con
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: None provided for the series. Summary for part 1: John is an omega who has been on heat suppressants his entire life. When Sherlock realises this and shows an interest in John, they have to work their way through the problems caused by John having never had a real heat in his life.

Reccer's comments: Another series that sucked me in from this incredibly versatile and prolific author. What starts out as a fairly standard omegaverse first-time fic develops into an emotionally much deeper series chronicling John and Sherlock's life together as a couple and parents of not just one, but eventually four children. It covers the start of their relationship, Reichenbach and the repercussions, life as parents of a disparate brood, and extends into their children's teen and young adult years, and beyond (see: character death warning).

What really made this series special for me is that it doesn't limit itself to the titillation of Alpha/Omega dynamics, but tackles real relationship and family issues. This isn't an idealization of Sherlock and John as offbeat but ultimately model parents, with large-eyed, curly-haired genius children. It feels very real, and Sherlock and John feel like real people. Yes, they are to a certain extent defined by their AU biology, but the author never loses sight of the core characters, and the basic traits that make the very special John-Sherlock connection resonate with such strength in any incarnation only seem to be strengthened.

Author's summary: When Sherlock invited John to live with him in 221B, he forgot to mention he was a single father to a four-year-old girl. (Written for this prompt on the kink meme.)
Reccer's comments: Oh, how I stalked this story when it originally posted on the kink meme. I’m normally ambivalent towards kid!fic, but this one grabbed me and would not let go. Imogen is wonderfully precocious, and the relationship between her and Sherlock is magnetic from the start. As the summary suggests, the story begins where Season One of Sherlock begins. But while it weaves the first season of Sherlock into the story, it does so in a refreshingly different retelling that enfolds both the reader and John Watson in the mystery of Sherlock, Imogen, and finally, of course, Moriarty.

Length: 28,500 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC and 'Let the Right One In' (Låt den rätte komma in) fusion (No knowledge of the book or film needed to enjoy the story)
Author's summary: John Watson is an isolated thirteen year old boy: he’s got a distant mother, a resentful older sister, and a sadistic bully at school called Moriarty who’s got it in for him. When Sherlock Holmes moves in next door, he and John form a rapid, intense friendship based on their mutual loneliness. Unfortunately for John, Sherlock has issues that go much deeper than loneliness.
Reccer's comments: This is an intense and atmospheric teen AU. The author does a fantastic job of painting young John's bleak existence in his cold and snowy London council flat. She makes us yearn for those glimpses of Sherlock right along with John. The story certainly qualifies as magical realism and has moments of horror, but it was seeing John struggling with his own emotions and sexuality that made me fall in love with it.

Title: Ava Watson Verse
Author: [info]KeelieThompson1
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 178,318 words (4 parts complete)
Rating: Teen to Mature
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: No series summary available.
Part 1 (When his hour will come): John Watson has been trapped since the moment he left Sherlock's funeral. It just took him a while to realise it. Prequel to "Paved with Love".
Part 2 (Paved with Love): Five year old Ava Watson's life is changed forever when her Daddy's old friend comes calling.
Part 3 (Rocks of Salvation): Moriarty's games and Sherlock's own arrogance have cost him the battle, but the war for Sherlock's soul plays on. Who would have thought that the shattered army doctor and the tiny girl could put up such a fight?
Part 4 (Tea and Coffee): Mycroft and Sherlock have never managed to agree on anything, let alone how to drink tea and coffee. But there are a few rare times when they can put that aside. Side along fic to "Paved with Love" from Mycoft's pov.

Reccer's comments: Full disclosure: I am the beta reader for part 5, which is currently being posted as a WIP. I didn't have anything to do with the four complete parts which are the subject of this rec, though.

All right, it's kid!fic, which I know is not everyone's cup of tea. If you have any sort of affinity for it, though, this is a great one.

First of all, I have to say something about how this series is organized. Part 2 is the main story, told from the point of view of Ava, John's five-year-old daughter. Parts 3 and 5 are the same story, told from Sherlock's point of view. It is not like reading the same story twice, though. In Part 2, you only see part of what is going on, which was actually a great point of attraction for me, because I like stories that don't explain everything, but have lots of stuff going on in the background that you have to figure out for yourself. I also enjoyed seeing Sherlock and John's relationship through the eyes of an outsider, and if you are not into explicit slash, then you will appreciate the Teen rating.

Parts 3 and 5 then explain much of what was happening 'behind the scenes' in Part 2, things that Ava didn't see or didn't understand. You also get some lovely Johnlock smut, if you were dying of curiosity about that in Part 2. ;) I was especially impressed by the way the plot opens up and thickens in Parts 3 and 5, so that you can see how much back story the author created for Part 2, and how much planning and detail has gone into this story.

This series is post-Reichenbach, post-hiatus, and canon-compliant (through the end of series 2). The main focus in Part 2 is the relationships between the three main characters (Sherlock, John, and Ava). They are all wary of each other at first, and the way they figure out how to relate to each other is wonderful to see unfold. There is some homophobia and child abuse (sensitive readers take caution), but the machinations, threats, and violence are for the most part kept to the background.

Parts 3 and 5 also focus heavily on the relationships, but the plot machine is Sherlock's efforts to rid their lives of Moriarty's influence once and for all (yes, he also survived the Fall). The tension and angst keep getting ratcheted up, and the climax is a blockbuster in which no one can win. The development of Sherlock's character in particular is fantastic.

I would actually recommend reading the parts in this order: Part 2 – Part 3 – Part 5 (currently WIP) - Part 1 – Part 4. I realize that this means you may have to wait to read Parts 1 and 4 until Part 5 is completed, but the author is updating frequently so hopefully it won't be that long a wait. The reason is that there are spoilers in parts 1 and 4 for the other parts. It won't ruin the reading experience, but I read them in that order and I preferred not having all of the plot laid out for me before I even began reading it.

Series Title: The Weight of Words
Author: dorothydonne
Pairing: John/Mycroft
Length: 18,333 words
Rating: T through G
Warnings: None
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: (for the first story in the series, Two Words, Ten Letters) Written for this prompt on the kink meme: In a universe where men can get pregnant, one of our fine gentlemen goes out for a drink and sees a sign warning against drinking while pregnant. He takes a second to think about it--almost shrugs it off--and then realizes that he is actually pregnant. Bonus for angst and fluff.

Reccer's comments: MPreg, rare(ish) pairing, kidfic, angsty fluff...this series hits so many "whoa, slow down there tiger" speed bumps it's almost unbelievable. And yet. And yet it is one of my all-time favorite pieces of writing in this fandom. Why you ask? Well, first of all there's dorothydonne's hiliarious sense of humor. Here's a little taste:

John pushed open the door to the loo, but before it even had time to close behind him, he had backed out and stood in front of it, practically turned to stone as the sign posted just below the little male icon caught his attention for the first time.

GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, men and women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.

Below the posting, it reminded the pub patrons to drink responsibly.

John swallowed and read it again.

Pregnant? No. I can’t be pregnant. He pushed the door open and leaned against it when it closed. I’m just reacting terribly to a sign on a door. So what if I’ve never paid it mind before? There are no symptoms. None. Well, the nausea. But that’s the flu. People get the flu. Everyone gets the flu. I don’t get pregnant.

Yes, the prompt asks for angst, and you get it, but the flipside of angst is comedy. John deals with the shook of an unexpected pregnancy in a surprisingly realistic manner: hysteria mixed with snarky banter, and a heaping side of FML gallows humor. It's one of the best depictions of John I've read, and takes what might have been a difficult to swallow concept (ie. male pregnancy) and turns it into a test of character that reveals John's true strengths and weaknesses.

This brings me to my next point: world building. The world building in this story is great in that dorothydonne doesn't waste time worrying about the physics of it all. In this world, both men and women can get pregnant. End of story. No long, invasive explanations of forming a temporary uterus or what have you (*cough* Omegaverse I'm looking at you). Now, I'm not saying more detailed explanations don't have their place, but in this case the simplicity of the world building works perfectly, because it allows the story to move right along into emotional territory.

And so, my final point: John/Mycroft. Personally, I have always found this pairing interesting, because it creates an instant triangle dynamic (not necessarily in a sexual way--there's such a thing as friend jealousy too!). But even if you're not a Johncroft shipper, you'll appreciate the skillful way in which dorothydonne explores how Sherlock would fit into both John and Mycroft's lives as they begin a relationship together. The final story in this series in particular will give you Sherlock lovers the warm fuzzies. But Sherlock isn't the only thing getting in between John and Mycroft; this story actually  deals with the demanding nature of Mycroft's job. The realism of the argument--who hasn't experienced/witnessed a relationship in which one or both partners are too overworked to spend time together?--brings this story into a whole new realm. And the final solution is lovely in that it does not pretend to be magic: compromise is the only way forward. But it's worth it in the end. :)

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: . Tristram Holmes dreads attending his new primary school, fearing he'll be teased and bullied as usual. Only, nothing goes exactly as he thinks it will when he finds himself with a seemingly unlikely friend in Emily Watson.

Reccer's comments:  Kidfic is one of those interesting fic subgenres that readers often love or hate, but even if you tend to avoid it, this story is worth a try.  Unlikely most kidfic stories, where a child is inserted into the canon timeline, this story is AU from the start.   Sherlock and John never met, and both men, under entirely different circumstances, became single fathers.  Getting Better is only peripherally their story; the main focus is on Tristram and his friendship with Emily.  And Tristram is the main reason I enjoy this fic.   Nox_candida has sketched a wonderful portrait of what a normal little boy would be like, if he were raised by Sherlock.  Tristram, although intelligent for his age, is not a mini-Sherlock, but he loves his father and, Sherlock, in his own way, loves him.   Seeing Sherlock through  Tristram’s eyes is a treat, as Tristram tries to find his place in the world.  Emily, who has her father’s courage and bright spirit, is his perfect compliment.  There is also a nicely paced casefic plot, as well as cameos from Uncle Mycroft.  Highly recommended.

Author's summary: Prompt: "Mycroft has a sulky little brat named Sherlock, Lestrade has a BAMF little soldier named John. Their kids are fast friends, so Mycroft and Lestrade end up becoming friends too...and then things start getting serious." Slight deviation from prompt in that this details the kids becoming friends, and doesn’t get much into “serious.”

Reccer's comments: I love AU fics, and I love kid fics, so this is right up my alley. Despite the primary pairing, Mycroft and Lestrade don't get quite as much time in the spotlight as Sherlock and John, whose friendship is as much a focus of these stories as the delicious simmer that barely qualifies as pre-slash.

Pairing: Watson/Mary Morstan, Holmes/unnamed OC, Holmes/Irene Adler
Length: 17,900

Warnings:Author chose not to warn, and I agree with her on this one

Author's summary: "Intemperance," a story from the secret journals of Doctor John H. Watson, intimate friend and long-time companion of the infamous Sherlock Holmes: A most curious and instructive report of the great man's improbable fecundation, gestation, and parturition.

Reccer's comments: This fic broke my brain, but in the best possible way. I'm not the Ritchie film's biggest fan. I tend to run screaming at Mpreg. The idea of Holmes/Irene Adler usually makes me want to break something. BUT, I will trust Basingstoke to the ends of the Earth, because she's never led me astray before. So, out of a healthy mix of boredom and mild insanity, I gave this one a try. And good lord, it may actually be my favourite piece of hers, and I think Mycroft's line illustrates quite beautifully why this fic simply must be read:

Mycroft Holmes snorted throatily. "Solving petty crimes. What a waste. Still, as a girl he was far worse. An embarrassment. As a man, he is a credit to the family name, even if he is wasting his full potential."

"Intemperance" handles an element of FtM transsexuality that can be positively traumatising for many transmen. An Basingstoke doesn't shy away from it, but rather tackles the issue head-on, with the added drama of Victorian sensibilities and makes it damn near impossible to look away until you've finished the story. You don't even have to be particularly familiar with the Ritchie-verse to enjoy this one, beyond the knowledge that when compared to his other counterparts, RDJ's Holmes is a bit of a shortarse.

It's a canon AU in which Dr Watson finds himself suddenly caring for two orphaned boys whose circumstances are nothing short of extraordinary. Even though their ages have been greatly reduced, the Holmes brothers are still very recognisable in their character without having the effect of being a couple of grown men in children's bodies. And if there's a bit of adventure and peril along the way, well... all's the better, really.

Excerpt:The helix of his ear curls almost precisely thirty degrees over the scapha. The antihetical fold is nearly flat, a hereditary and defining feature. A particularly large antitragus completes the observational deduction as to the paternity.

"Sir?" The boy’s voice was hesitant, but the timber was unmistakable. Add to that the coloring of the eyes ...

Holmes rubbed his nose. "Yes, Doctor Watson is home. I’ll tell him you’re here."

"But I haven't told you my name ... sir!"

Holmes closed the door in the middle of the boy's sentence and ambled back up the stairs. Watson, typically, was reading and looking smug about not having to answer the door. Holmes wondered how many seconds it would take for that smugness to disappear.

Reccer's comments: Another one from a meme. Unlike other fics around this trope, here Holmes is the one who copes way better with the situation and actually steps in when Watson is completely overwhelmed. I really love Watson's awkwardness and Holmes' "match-making"!

Author's summary: A hostage situation at 221B Baker Street proves that not all dangers come from Moriarty.
Reccer's comments: I adore fics about chosen families, and this fic uses both an actual familial relationship (Lestrade and his daughter) and a network of extended "family" (ranging from John and Sherlock to Mrs. Hudson to Anthea to Donovan) to great effect. It's lovely to see them all come together around a common cause. Also, [livejournal.com profile] morganstuart does a capital job of showing John and Sherlock in a domestic situation with Lestrade's family while keeping them marvelously in character. Also, lots of people get to be heroic, which is always fun.

"I have a look," Sherlock informed John. After a beat, he thought to ask Sofie, "What is my look, exactly? Be precise."

"Hmmm… like music is playing in the background, even when it's quiet, and wind is blowing in your hair, even when you're indoors." Blinking at him over her phone, she added, "Like you should be wearing a cape. All the time."

Sherlock seemed inordinately pleased.

Reccer's comments: This is an AU where John is a nanny for young Mycroft and Sherlock. No wait, don't walk away! I generally don't enjoy stories that involve children, but Mycroft and Sherlock are still wonderfully themselves in this universe that this AU really rings true. John gets to be a BAMF all over the place, and it's fascinating to see him relate to the enigmatic Mrs. Holmes. Seeing John become part of the family is heartwarming.

Also, Lestrade comes into the picture with some choice scenes of sexual tension. This universe has expanded to include not only the five stories in the series, but also Nanny!John's blog (Nothing Happens to Me) and Lestrade's blog (Interesting Murders Not Boring Stuff). Length: 93 000 words

My name is Eugenia Watson, but you can call me Genie. I'm sixteen. This is my life.

Reccer's comments: Now I know a lot of people will look at the length, rating and kidfic tag and skip right over this. Don't! It takes a great deal of skill and subtlety to write a compelling story from the first-person perspective of an original character, but [livejournal.com profile] madlori delivers in spades.

What really stands out is how well-drawn and engaging the original characters are. Genie is an absolute delight; smart, badass and very much her own person. Her mother Grace is intriguing, and I couldn't help feeling that, were it not for Sherlock, she and John would be a perfect match. They aren't half-hearted additions to the story, they are real, fully-fledged characters and before long I was just as invested in their lives and happiness as I was in Sherlock's and John's.

The incidental Sherlock/John stuff (and there's a fair amount of it) is absolutely delicious; there are hints of a tantalizing backstory and glimpses of them at their BAMF-iest, crime-solving best. [livejournal.com profile] madlori 's depiction of Sherlock in the father role is absolutely spot on, and her characterisation of Genie is more or less exactly what I would expect for a child of John's. Her Sherlock and John are quite, quite ridiculously in love with each other without ever being out of character.

A note on the length: don't be freaked out by it. It's split into 28 chapters, one blog entry per chapter. Read in one go, or a few chapters at a time, either works well.

ETA: Not currently a WiP. The author's note on the final chapter reads: "Work is marked complete for now and is on hiatus, having reached a convenient stopping point. Additional chapters may be added in the future."

Reccer's comments:

So. Kidfic. I'm usually not a particular fan of this genre myself, but I followed a rec to this one and I am SO glad I did! It boggles my mind how a one shot based on a rather cracky prompt developed into something this epic. And I mean epic. I was still thinking about it long after I finished, and with the amount of fic I read, that's saying something.

Not only does the author write pitch-perfect character voices, he/she actually got me to care about this kid (which imo is often the inherent problem with kidfic) AND gave the whole 'verse an overall storyline that had me biting my nails. Moriarty is absolutely chilling!

The only downside is that the last fic has, as of yet, not been posted. The existing stories are all complete, but the last (missing) one was hinted at a lot, so it definitely feels unfinished.
I hope the author will maybe get back to it at some point...

For those of you who are still making a "Kidfic? :/" face, have some quotes from different stories of the verse:

John had done the safe sex talk (in excruciating medical detail). John had done the no drugs talk (Sherlock had wanted to do it, but John didn’t think ‘no cocaine unless you’re really, really bored, and Marijuana doesn’t really count anyway’ constituted a decent anti-drugs talk).

Pairing: Sally/Sherlock (past), John/Sherlock (implied)
Length: 12,006 words
Rating: PG-13

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: She remembers out of focus impressions of paleness, the kind of skin that burns in English sunshine, and freckles, dulled by winter, on his spine, and somewhere in the hours between opening her front door and hearing it close in the morning the biggest mistake of Sally's life is cemented into reality in the strongest possible way.

The real reason Sally Donovan hates Sherlock so much? They have a child he never sees.

Reccer's comments:This is an amazing story that takes the way that Sally Donovan treated (and was allowed to treat) Sherlock and weaves a story around them that you will absolutely believe. I watched the show again after reading this and I could credit all of Sally's actions to this very memorable story. It runs from pre-show through The Great Game and while it's complete in itself you will find yourself thinking about what could happen after TGG. [livejournal.com profile] flecalicious assured me that she's planning more to the story. I know that I'll look forward to seeing it when the time comes.
