Author's summary: Outside, the frigid rain continued undeterred, but in our home we were far beyond its reach.
Reccer's comments: This is the author's first fic for Granada, or any Holmes incarnation, and I'm on a mission to convince them to stay, that their fics may be fruitful and multiply. In this slightly damp domestic idyll, Watson fusses over the perennial self-negligent detective... and, remarkably, Holmes lets him. There is tea and violin-playing. It's all very gentle, and the characterization is lovely.

Title: Christmas With You
Author: MissDavis
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 23,000 words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Watch Sherlock, John and Rosie over the years as they celebrate the season as only they can.

Reccer's comments: This charming series of ficlets was written for a 31-day December challenge, using specific prompts for each chapter. The ficlets do make up an entire story, but it is not a linear telling. It jumps back and forth through time, but there is a common thread throughout: how Sherlock, John and Rosie spend and celebrate Christmas together as they work towards forming a family unit. Some chapters take place before John and Sherlock are a couple, and some take place during their established relationship. No matter; it works in a delightful way.

Mary does appear in a couple of chapters, but only as a ghost and a memory.

Yes, I know it's almost May, but that doesn't mean we all don't need some festive cheer to get us through our days, now more than ever!

Title: No Ordinary Cats

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Mrs Hudson adopts a cat called Sherlock, who soon becomes bored being an only cat. So she tries to find a friend for him. Silly little AU in which Sherlock and John (and Mycroft) are cats.

Reccer's comments: The author's summary makes this sound like an adorable piece of fluff (literally!), and to a large extent it is. Light and charming, it always brings a smile to my face. But ironically, given the fic's title, what I most enjoy about it is the loving detail with which it portrays Sherlock and John as thoroughly ordinary cats. This fic was clearly written by someone who loves the animals and has a fond, familiar eye for their behaviours, postures, temperaments and mannerisms. Translating Sherlock and John's personalities into the animal world has often been done, but I've rarely seen a version in which they remain simultaneously so recognizable and so genuinely feline. Mrs Hudson's irritated adoration with her beloved but occasionally awful tenants translates perfectly into cat ownership :)

Every time I read this story, I am surprised at how easily it engages me and how utterly sold I am on the details and descriptions.

Candle Shop AU. Fluff. Crack. Post-Reichenbach Johnlock reunion.

Reccer's comments: This is, guaranteed, the least angsty Post-Reichenbach fic you'll ever read. Lighthearted, cracky, and Halloween themed, this short ficlet is a delight from beginning to end.

John is a witch doctor who runs a candle shop. Anyone who has worked retail will relate to his harried interactions with his customers, some more polite than others. Then a tall, handsome stranger saunters into the shop, and John forgets about everything else. Because there's something about this stranger -- or is he really a "stranger" at all?

Verse: Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century
Author's summary: In which measurements are taken, a question is asked, plans are made and it is no great tragedy that that which is forgotten stays lost.

Reccer's comments: In the 22nd century, Holmes was resurrected and rejuvenated in order to fight crime again. Meanwhile, a Yard-issue crime-fighting robot read the journals of John H. Watson and... became John H. Watson. What that latter thing means is never fully explored in the show; Holmes has not-my-Watson feelings for the space of an episode then handily gets over it, accepting this Watson as that Watson and happily fighting crime with him thereafter.

AnnieAwkward's "The (Second) Prime of Life" is a poignant, domestic little story that explores the paradox of this Watson both being and not-being that Watson. After all, there are things that robo!Watson doesn't know, and can't know: John Watson never committed them to paper and Holmes won't -- or can't -- discuss them. Further, as a non-human brain in a non-human chassis -- and operating from a decidedly non-human memory of John Watson's life! -- robo!Watson is a fundamentally different creature than John Watson was. These things matter, of course; how could they not? And yet both men choose over and again to accommodate them, to embrace this and avoid that, and painstakingly build a new relationship on the sometimes-treacherous remains of an old one.

Because there are decided rewards to that effort, and going to Mars is the least of them. :-)

Title: You Have 487 New Messages (Or, In Which Sherlock Holmes Starts a Grouptext)
Author: JenTheSweetie
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 13,000 words
Rating: Teen
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: MH: Please remove me from this thread.

Reccer's comments: This is such a delightful, funny little fic. I adore texting fics in general, and this one had me laughing out loud on several occasions. Most of the chapters are fairly short, and the whole thing is a quick read. If you want a break from angst and drama, either in fic or in real life, then curl up with a nice cup of tea (or glass of wine) and settle in to be entertained.

It takes place post-Series 4. The whole thing starts when Sherlock Holmes starts a grouptext, asking who took his skull. Mycroft repeatedly asks to be removed from the thread, to no avail (hence, the summary). Different topics come up, participants keep changing the name of the grouptext, borderline crack ensues - and eventual johnlock is revealed. Have fun!

Author's summary: Sometimes you need to reopen old wounds before they can heal. Sometimes you need to get away before you can come home.

Reccer's comments: I raced through this breathlessly, both eager to see what would happen next and wanting it to be much longer. The most recent addition to the “couples therapy” trope, this is one of the very few that doesn’t involve a fake relationship. Instead, John and Sherlock attend the sessions with the specific intent of recovering from the events in series 3 and 4 (disregarding TFP and Eurus) and strengthening their relationship. I especially liked that there are no easy answers, but that both Sherlock and John are committed to each other from the get-go, regardless of whether they remain platonic best friends or allow the love they both feel to find its expression through romance and physical intimacy. (Check the tags to see which route they go…) This is also a Parentlock fic, with Rosie an integral part of the story and the family unit. With lots of delicious UST, quiet domesticity, heart-wrenching confessions, a day at the beach, a wise old woman, and all the time in the world to get things right.

Reccer's comments: Based on the Adventure of the Dying Detective, this is the comic equivalent of a one-shot missing scene that packs the punch of a full-blown story, and as such is an absolute delight. The facial expressions in this little comic are everything. I just love the tenderness and sweet emotion, paired with a modicum of angst and a hint of eroticism.

Reccer's comments: I'm not sure if there's a name for this kind of thing, but this is a story told through gifs of the series (plus a couple from other sources), with the author inserting their own subtitles. It's kind of a cross between a vid and a fic. It's short and sweet, but manages to pack in the full range of emotion, from the stomach swoops of flirty texting, loin-tingling teases of a consummation many years in the making, to a heart-in-throat confrontation and the heartfelt sighs of a happy ending. And all rendered in slick, high quality gifs with in-character dialogue. It's cute, sassy, sweet, and just great fun.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Part 1 "Oh, What A Night": John and Sherlock go on a date. Hilarity, kissing, and egregious amounts of fluff ensue.
Part 2 "The Losing Side": Sherlock wants to marry John, but he's not sure of the best way to propose. Who better to run ideas by than, well...John?
Part 3: "Points of Interest": Sherlock and John's wedding night.
Reccer's comments: This is a set of 3 complete comics with over 100 panels telling the story of Sherlock and John’s courtship. Sweet, funny, awkward, cute, and a little bit sexy, and of course it wouldn’t be Johnlock without at least a smidgen of angst, a case, an interfering brother and well-meaning friends to spice things up. The judicious use of small amounts of animation add to the charm in part 1, and in part 3 things get very hot yet very tasteful with an intimate glimpse John and Sherlock’s lovey times as husbands. Seriously heart-melting adult fare.

Title: A Simple Deduction
Author: riventhorn

Length: 3769 words
Rating: G
Verse: Sherlock Hound (Meitantei Holmes)
Author's summary: Hound, Watson, and Mrs. Hudson might never say it, but actions speak louder than words.

Reccer's comments: Affectionate, domestic, OT3 fluff for the 1984 anime series, Sherlock Hound. The first chapter is mostly pre-canon (although we do get to see Hound going a bit dreamy after meeting Dr. Watson), and the last two are set indeterminately post-canon. The character voices are spot-on, from Hound's gentlemanly reserve to Moriarty's scenery-chewing, and the shenanigans are appropriately over-the-top, and yet the story proper is a series of largely quiet, sometimes humorous moments that document the development of the OT3.

"A Simple Deduction" makes a few references to canon events, but they're not plot-critical, and shouldn't set you back if you don't know them. However, for those who prefer to know all the things, the references are drawn almost exclusively from two episodes: #1 "The Four Signatures" (wherein Hound first meets Dr. Watson), and #6 "The White Cliffs of Dover" (wherein there is far more to Mrs. Hudson than either of her lodgers suppose).

Length: currently 15K words in three stories
Rating: Teen
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD canon
Author's summary: Holmes's inability to attend to basic domestic chores causes friction between him and Watson. Featuring musings, squabbling, and eventual makeup sex.

Reccer's comments: Holmes and Watson have retired to Sussex together, and while living out his life with John Watson should be the stuff of Holmes' dreams -- nay, is the stuff of his dreams -- there yet remain all the pesky domestic details that must be solved again, and again, and once again after that. Such as the dishes. The everlasting dishes, which were washed yesterday, and must be washed again today, and will certainly need washing again tomorrow. For, as Holmes tells us in the opening of the second story, "The Sisyphean Art":

These recent years have brought to light many interesting truths regarding the complexities of human relations, and foremost is this: It is one thing to live with a man and quite another to set up a household with him.

This series is exquisite in its detailing of the frustrations and grace of a marriage: not only how a petty fight about making the bed can spiral beyond all reason or a sink of dirty dishes can drive one to despair, but also how well-earned exasperation from one's partner in one moment can transform to forgiveness and compassion in the next. The author has tagged these "domestic fluff," which is accurate enough, but also fails to capture the rindokulousness of being human, and the wrench of being loved far better than you (or really anyone) could possibly deserve.

And the writing is gorgeous, too.

Title: Albion and the Woodsman
Author: Glenmore
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 54,437 words
Rating: Not Rated (I would rate it Mature)
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Post Series 3. Sherlock and John are devastated after Mary Morstan makes her final moves. Sherlock relapses at the crack house, John walks around the world ...and a lot happens in between. Parentlock, in the good way.

Reccer's comments: If you are the type of reader who, like me, generally avoids first-person storytelling, then do yourself a favor and make an exception for this one. It's one of those rare fics that successfully paints Sherlock Holmes as a devoted single parent. The story is in turns funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.

It is told from Sherlock's POV, and begins post-series 3. It starts out after Sherlock has been shot for a second time by Mary Watson, an event that leads to her arrest and to John needing to disappear for awhile in order to get his head together. He leaves for a year-long walkabout around the world, leaving Sherlock devastated and returning to drugs. Of course he cleans himself up, only to be confronted several months later by a pregnant stranger claiming that Sherlock is the father.

We get to watch Sherlock fall immediately in love with his son Albion, and then take to single fatherhood like a duck takes to water. As Sherlock grows into his new role, he continues to pine for John and wait for his eventual return. The way Sherlock refers to John in his absence by different epithets such as 'eleven jumpers Watson' and 'Three pairs of brogues Watson' kept me delighted and laughing throughout.

We are introduced to several OC’s, not the least of which is Albion himself. His nanny gives soldier!John a run for his money (once he returns), and even the mother who abandoned him manages to turn her life around and gain at least a smidgen of our respect.

There are struggles and lessons to be learned, not the least of which that 'happily ever after' does not mean what all the fairy-tales claim. Reality is much more complicated, but all the more rewarding because of it.

Author's summary: When it was all over, when the east wind had blown through and they picked themselves off the pavement, Sherlock said enough.

Eighteen years later, the real journey begins.

Reccer's comments: So we'll start things off with a Series 4 fic already! If you don't want any spoilers for series 4, best to stop now.

Even though this one was written before The Final Problem aired, it still fits in very well with the canon we ended up with. It's a quietly lyrical piece, more of a character study than anything else, that takes a quote from The Lying Detective and shows how Sherlock puts it into practice. Your life is not your own.

In only 2200 words, the author shows how Sherlock and John remake themselves into the men they need to be so that after eighteen years, they can finally come together as they were always meant to. Told from Sherlock's point of view, we get a sense of how he has made fruitful use of this long period of waiting, and how it all pays off in the end.

Length: 15,517 words
Rating: Explicit

Verse: BBC
Author's summary: Today was the first standardized patient interaction, and John was nervous, and very nearly late. He knew it was silly, but the act of finally introducing himself as “Doctor Watson”, of laying hands on another living, breathing human aside from his learning partner for physical exam maneuvers...in a medical capacity...well, it felt huge. He took one last deep breath and rapped three times on the door of exam room 221-B, listening for acknowledgement from the patient within. “Oh, do come in,” drawled the richest baritone voice John had ever heard.

Reccer's comments: Anatomy lessons have never been put to better use. Most medical realism/kink fics I have seen are angsty and/or dark, but this is a fun romantic comedy of ophthalmoscopes, dissections, physical exams, dirty mnemonics, and more Latin terms for body parts than you can shake a stick at. A med school AU that doubles as a Six Thatchers pastiche chock full of canon references, flirting, and insane wish fulfillment.

As a side note, if you are easily grossed out, I would recommend downloading the fic to read rather than viewing it on-site, as a few of the embedded end-of-chapter images are anatomically graphic (a dissected human heart, the inside of an eyeball, and cutaway diagrams of veins and nerves).

Title:Through The Clouds
Author: mazarin221b
Pairing: Johnlock
Length:20,004
Rating:Explicit
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:Sherlock takes a remarkably early retirement at 47, and convinces John that a change of pace would do them both good. They buy an old cottage on the South Downs, and exchange their nonstop life in Baker Street for quiet contemplation, bee studies, and book writing.

They might go completely insane, but sometimes it takes stepping outside of the life you're living to find the life you want.

Reccer's comments:I have such a thing for retirement stories, they melt me into such happy goo. This one is warm and so charming. This was gorgeous from start to finish, it made me all warm and fuzzy inside. This fic was like a warm fuzzy blanket wrapped around me. :)))))

I adored the lovely imagery the bathtub scene and bees(Sherlock must retire with bees) were delightful. Also the slow burn between them she captured the ache of finally requited passion.

Here is a small excerpt....Sherlock takes one last look out to the horizon, mouth downturned and brow furrowed, before seeming to shake himself and catching up to John with a few long-legged strides. John turns back toward the path cut into the cliffs, climbing steadily toward the rolling downs already green and lush in the weak April warmth.

They reach the top and Sherlock strikes toward the west, back to where their hired Land Rover sits a mile away in a public carpark. John falls into step beside him and takes a deep breath.

“I expected a case,” he starts. “A bit chilly for a walk, really, so. D’you mind telling me what we’re doing out here?”
Sherlock doesn’t even pause, simply tucks his head down against the wind and continues walking.

“I’m retiring,” he says simply.
