Welcome to the comm!

221B Recs is a community for reccing fan works based on any and all incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, from the original books by ACD to the new BBC and CBS shows.

We hope you enjoy the recs posted here! If you'd like to participate by reccing something, you need to be a member and to sign up to rec. 221B Recs works on a monthly cycle, so if you sign up you commit to posting recs for one month. More information on this, as well as our rules, can be found below.

(Please note that this is not a comm for asking for recommendations!

It has come to our attention that so far we didn't really have a policy for reccing podfics in place... So, we've decided that from now on, if you'd like to rec a podfic, there will be an extended header looking like this:

Title:
Author:
Reader:
Podfic: [link to where it can be downloaded]
Pairing:
Length:
etc.

It'll be posted on the rules page (linked on the left), so you can just c/p it should you need it. As you can see, we also added a podfic tag that you can make use of. We did our best to add the tag to all previous recs that mentioned a podfic existing.

Hey everyone!

A couple of things:

First of all, sign-ups are frozen for the moment!
Don't worry, the comm isn't going anywhere, but from now on sign-ups will only open a month prior to the reccing month in question. Meaning we'll reopen in October for reccing in November, in November for reccing in December and so on.

That said, we will take on two additional reccers for THIS month. I know it's short notice but if you're interested just comment below.

Thing no 2: We've been thinking about having a monthly "Open Rec Day", centered around specific themes. Some of you have already expressed an interest in this, but obviously it's only going to make sense if there's enough feedback.

So, a poll \o/. Click one of the boxes buttons, you know you want to!

[Poll #1768027]

Just a reminder:
If you want to make recs, you must join the community.
Posting is limited to members approved for the month or as permanent reccers.

If you'd like to sign up as a future reccer, here's the sign-up post, the current schedule, and rec guidelines.

We're adding this one:

If you rec fic, art, or a vid that's a remix, please identify the original author and work that was remixed after the remix work's title.
We've added a "genre: remix" tag to be used as well.

This would look like (work chosen at random from remixes on AO3):
Author:
Title: Sally Donovan's Legs; a remix of Elevate by [livejournal.com profile] doodle
Pairing: Sherlock/John; Sally/Sherlock
Length: 534 words
Rating: Mature
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: John inadvertently triggers memories that Sherlock thought he had deleted.

This will be added to the guidelines post

Also: When you rec a crossover, please include the crossover fandom in the header! It's important information for the reader, who may or may not be interested in reading a crossover or in reading that particular fandom. As we've noted in the rec template, this information should go under "Verse":

Title: In the Genes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] alice_day
Pairing: Gen
Length: 7,400-ish words
Rating: PG
Verse: Sherlock BBC, House MD crossover
Author's summary: A diagnostician and a detective must join forces to solve a mystery that threatens both their lives.

Thanks!

We've now expanded the section on Warnings in our reccing guidelines.

It now says:
Warnings need not be copied from the authors' original headings, nor are they needed for every rec. Warnings should be given for rape, extreme violence, underage sex, or character death. Other content may be mentioned in the reccer's comments at her or his discretion. Do not put slash, het, asexuality, or other information about relationships under "Warnings".

***

The template includes a line for Warnings if they're necessary, but again, not every rec has to include them. You don't have to say "Warning: No warning" either. Warning for kissing or smoking or swearing or the like is inappropriate. Warnings for sexual content (that's indicated by the rating and genre) and relationship genre (that's indicated by the pairing and the Gen/Slash/Het genre) are unnecessary, and warnings for sexual orientation or type of relationship can be offensive. Please do mention kinks, fetishes, etc. or any other content you think is significant or that you think the reader should be aware of in your comments about the story or vid or artwork.

Questions are welcome in comments here or on the guidelines post, or in PMs to one of the mods.

ETA: Amend that to "rape and non-con" -- for non-consensual sex. If you're in doubt about shades of meaning, mention the issue in your comments. The concept to warn for that we're aiming at is sex forced against one's will.

Hey guys!

We've updated our rules concerning WIPs a bit. If you do want to rec a 'Work In Progress' you can now do so IF the story in question has not been updated in over six months. You have to put up a clear warning about the WIP status though. (Series of connected fics do NOT count as a WIP.)
Hope everybody's ok with this.

There's now also a new general info post which hopefully combines all the rules, links, templates etc. in one place.

ETA: I tried sticking it at the top of the comm, which apparently does not work... But thanks to our mod [livejournal.com profile] unovis_lj, who, unlike me, actually understands the inner workings of LJ, we now have links at the sidebar. :)

Hey everyone!

Since this question was raised a few days ago we wanted to make an official post about our stance on RPF/RPS recs:

This comm is for reccing fan works based on the fictional characters created by ACD only, which means: no RPF or RPS as a genre!
It is ok if you have a fic where a real person has a cameo, and is interacting with other fictional characters. To that end we've added a "character: real person" tag to the list. This especially applies to stories which feature ACD as a character.

Thanks!

Just a quick mod-post to let you know that the templates for posting both "fic/art" and "vid" recs are now also up on the community profile. So if you want to you can always copy/paste them from there.

Please note the comm's policies before you make a vid rec. Recs that don't meet the guidelines will be deleted (we'll tell you what the problem was and how to fix it to repost).

Vids have unique source issues. To protect and respect our vidders, we ask that links be made appropriately as follows. )

Template for Vid Recs:

Subject line: Vid Rec: [Title, vidder]

Title: [if different from music title]
Music Title & Artist: [do not make this into a link to the vid]
Vidder:
Pairing or Character:
[if appropriate; if the vidder didn't specify, you don't have to]
Verse: [source, e.g., Sherlock BBC, Ritchie films, Granada, multi, etc.; please identify crossovers]
Link: [link to the vidder's announcement post for the vid or other approved link; see rec guidelines above]
Reccer's Comments:

Please tag as "vids"

Guidelines and template have been adapted from those used by [livejournal.com profile] crack_van.
