Title: mutatis mutandis
Author: SarahT
Pairing: Sherlock/Mycroft
Length: approx. 4,100 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: No one ever gets to him.

Reccer's comments: With Mycroft playing for the other side it would be rather hard to imagine anyone ever getting to him. Except for his little brother, of course.

For even in a universe where the name of Holmes inspires terror for all the wrong reasons Mycroft still worries over him, constantly. Hence, he’s made sure Sherlock can only turn to him to find some relief for the perpetual boredom and Mycroft is willing to supply him with everything Sherlock needs… on his brotherly terms.

Exquisitely written, this fic will have you shivering with delight and make you feel glad in the series both brothers are on the side of the angels for this dark scenario might be all too likely.

Author's summary: Mycroft becomes a vampire, and Sherlock finds it intriguing, until it becomes all too real. Hunger, addiction, desperation... and giving in.

Reccer's comments: If I'm going to cop to reading an iddy distilled-essence-of-fanfiction incestuous vampire AU, I could cop to a lot worse than this little gem. Indybaggins gets right down to the deliciously physical nitty gritty of Mycroft being turned (for Queen and Country!) and explores the tension between addiction and denial, need and refusal, and the inextricable link between monstrous hunger and animal eroticism.

I'll just be over here dabbing my face with a cool washcloth.

Length:136749 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Something very strange keeps happening at 7:35 PM.

Reccer's comments: After an accident, Sherlock Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch wake up in each other's body - Benedict faced with having to pretend to be a genius and face down supervillains and Sherlock having to adapt to the life of a well loved actor. The author does a great job of expanding on the humour of the premise, showing both men struggling with their fish out of water existence as they try to find a way back to their true homes and the people they love. There is also a smart and intriguing mystery plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I loved how funny and observant this story was, and how well it riffs off of our knowledge of the characters and real people involved in the story. Despite not usually being one for RPF, it's one of my favourites.

Author's summary: Sherlock tries on Irene for size.

The scent of her perfume makes his mouth dry as he dabs it lightly on his wrists, his collarbone, careful to avoid the delicate pearls. He brings his arm up to his nose, inhaling deeply, his lips leaving traces of red where they touch the delicate skin of his wrist.

Reccer's comments: This fic has just everything one could want from a Holmescest fic. It's warm, it's tender, it's got Mycroft adoring, worshipping Sherlock's body, it's got Sherlock desperate for his brother's touch.
Add to that the delicious image of a string of pearls rolling against Sherlock's lovely, lovely throat.

God, I could just die from the perfection of his fic.

BTW. My last rec this month for tomorrow I'll be off on a holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed myself this month. So many great fics and art to rec and such lovely interactions with other people in the fandom. Thank you, mods, for running this comm and providing us with a positive place for some serious squee.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author’s summary: Mycroft remembers the last time he and Sherlock were together. Set a few months after Sherlock's start at Oxford university.

Reccer’s comments: This series turned me into a dedicated Holmescest lover. The essence of the genre is all there; Mycroft’s sense of guilt with regard to their innocent parents, the sense of awareness of and disregard of the social taboo, the need for secrecy. Then there’s the careful manipulation of the brother who thinks he’s the one doing the manipulating. The thrill of the chase, over and over again. The mutual trust and understanding. Their realisation that they’re unique and this is who they are. Sherlock has already understood this a long time ago, and steadily works at undermining Mycroft’s heroic attempts at resistance. Poor Mycroft, there’s so much at stake for him – a career, a life – but much like any great hero his fate is chiselled in stone with capitals and all the gods are working against him. This, after all, is what Holmescest is about. Really, it’s so much more than the Holmes brothers having sex. If that was all there was to it, it would be boring. There is sex in these stories as well, gushingly hot sex in fact, but at the same time it’s so heartfelt and tender it makes something catch in your breast while reading.

All that, and in [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made’s achingly beautiful language to boot. What more could one possibly want from a story.

Note: the LJ-link connects you to the first story of the series.

Author's summary: AU. Sherlock and John meet as competing bakers on The Great British Bake Off. There’s intense baking, lush recipes and enticing food. Mycroft, guilt, past sins in chocolate and gingerbread. And love. That too.

Reccer's comments: I've read the summary and I've read the warnings and neither had prepared me for this fic. There is crack in this fic, yes. But there's also plenty of angst. It's way more intense, disturbing and serious than you'd think upon seeing it's a Great British Bake Off AU.

I freely admit that while I appreciate this threesome and how John somehow balances things out, and I also quite enjoy Johnlock in here, this fic for me is won by holmescest and quite probably the most fascinating description of this relationship in fandom. Almost all fics that describe Holmes' brothers relationship somehow touch the subject of food, diets and fat jokes, but this is the one ties it all up into one perfectly twisted mix.

I feel I have to say that even if these pairings are your cup of tea, this fic might not be, might be too much in the wrong direction. However it just might hit all of the right buttons and you will realize what a gem it is and how quite possibly it's the most perfect, most twisted love story ever written. Plus, there will be cakes.

Author's summary: Some explicit artwork of mine featuring Mycroft and Sherlock in compromising situations. NSFW people!

Reccer's comments: Young Sherlock and Mycroft have an intimate encounter with some slick 3D modeling software, in an ongoing series of explicit scenes. I'm not 100% sold on the likenesses and there's something unsettling about all of these images - perhaps the Xanaxed expressions on their faces or the odd places that Sherlock rests his weight (oh god not the kneecap!). But they're also weirdly hot. The artist took pains to get Mycroft's nose right, which I appreciate, and I like the perky human-scale genitalia. Subscribed!

Author: [livejournal.com profile] kahvi
Pairing: Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 3,700 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Underage, Dubious Consent
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: There is a part of Sherlock which, despite all else that he is, remains virginal and innocent, and therein lies the appeal. Mycroft cannot have it, so neither will anyone else.

Reccer's comments: This story is so gloriously disturbing that I really don't know what to make of it, even after reading it several times. There is an abundance of subtly intriguing details strewn into the narrative which can be interpreted in a number of ways and make for a very rewarding read. More importantly, the constant battles of wits and wills between Mycroft and Sherlock that are described in this fic in non-chronological order are as entertaining as they are scary. Sherlock is alternatingly attempting to break free of Mycroft's influence and to maintain the status quo, neither of which he does particularly successfully, since Mycroft is unfortunately always one step ahead of him.

Both Holmes brothers are depicted as dangerous, deranged, very clever and completely removed from the rest of the world, existing in a slightly fantastical setting of their own. As a pre-series perspective, it makes a frightening amount of sense on what we later get to witness on the actual show.

Please note that the story doesn't actually contain any incest, just two brothers obsessively playing mindgames with each other and sharing a bed - voluntarily or not so voluntarily. It's certainly a darkfic, but more of a psychological than a physiological nature.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] misplaced_ad (MisplacedLonelyHeartsAd on AO3)
Pairing: Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 2,500 words
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: John and Sherlock are just passing the time. It may or may not be a game.
*****
“I mean, it’s not like Mycroft sends you flowers.”
Sherlock snorts. “If he did, I guarantee that they would be fraught with meaning.”
“What, in the ‘language of flowers’ like a Victorian suitor?” John laughs at the absurdity of the idea. “Okay, so what flower represents ‘I worry about you constantly’?”
“ ‘Eat more green vegetables.’ ” They start snickering.
“ ‘I’ve been monitoring you by CCTV.’ ”
“ ‘Give me back my purloined ID cards.’ ” At this point they succumb to a hearty fit of giggling.
When Mycroft brings flowers the next morning, it is no exaggeration to say that they are both rendered speechless.

Reccer's comments: This is an immensely fascinating "outsider" perspective on the Holmes brothers' dubiously antagonistic and intense relationship, namely John's, who - prompted by something said by Sherlock in passing - can't shake off the idea that there's more to Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship than meets the eye. On the one hand this turns John into an intriguing unreliable narrator because his confusion and previous impressions cloud his judgement and affect his interpretation of everything he observes afterwards. On the other hand, though, John is still John. He makes some genuinely astute observations, acknowledges that his perception's prejudiced, is always ready to question himself and, above all, he takes everything that the Holmes brothers throw at him in his stride, just like the wonderful and immensely interesting human being that he is.

The characterisations are all excellent, especially Sherlock's, who we know loves to play games and never has any scruples to experiment on John. Despite the fact that Sherlock displays a tendency to treat John like an entertaining lab rat, the friendship between them still rings true in every single sentence. The relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft is rendered beautifully, like an intricate puzzle, and with great subtlety. If you ever hoped to stumble across a Sherlock story wherein Sherlock and Mycroft quote poems and exchange flowers and are still very much their own enigmatic selves, this is your fic.

The nature of the relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft remains gloriously ambiguous right until the end. We never know if Sherlock's simply messing with John because he finds the latter's reactions a fascinating study or if he's actually being sincere, and that's what makes this story so perfect through and through.

Title: All The Towers Of Ivory Are Crumbling (also on AO3)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Pairing: Sherlock/Mycroft
Length: 3,700 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: It really was just like old times, except, perhaps, that Mycroft was now all too aware of what he had already forsaken. The Sign of Three post-ep.

Reccer's comments: This story features a totally lovely, holmescesty conclusion to The Sign of Three and has immediately become one of my favourite new Sherlock fics. There's music, there's dancing, there's the two Holmes brothers talking in the slighty mysterious, enigmatic way that always seems like a language of their own, there's tragic misunderstandings, unrequited feelings, wistful remembrances and a long overdue talk - in short everything that makes for an emotionally satisfying read.

Moreover, though, the story manages to do justice to both brothers. When they argue, they really both have a point because they manage to put their finger on exactly the character traits of the other person which prevent them from realising the other's true feelings. Naturally, this makes it a lot more believable that these two immeasurably clever people can err so terribly and not understand what's right before them.

Furthermore, I'm in awe of the fact that this is one of the few Holmescest stories which actually brings up John, too, and doesn't play down his influence in Sherlock's life. Instead, John's marriage presents a perfect opportunity to deal with all the issues that the Holmes brothers have been carrying around with themselves for years, allowing them to finally come to terms with the past and make a new start for the future.

Obviously, for soppy readers like myself, it's absolutely marvellous that even though this fantastic story manages to lay out with great clarity why Sherlock and Mycroft can never be happy ever after together, it still gives us a happy ending of sorts.

Pairing: Sherlock/Mycroft

Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Interactions between brothers.

Reccer's comments: A deliciously saucy Holmescest fic which presents more or less the same set of events, first from John's POV, then from Mycroft's, then from Sherlock's, giving us a kaleidoscopic view of the complicated relationship between the two brothers.
John is suitably observant and confused by what he observes, whereas Sherlock presents himself as a terribly manipulative, spoilt child and outdoes himself to add to John's confusion by exposing him to the Holmes brothers' far from conventional moral standards, and Mycroft, finally, comes across as the enigmatic, manipulative politician we know him to be, but with the added playfulness of a Bond girl - an image I can no longer get out of my head whenever I think of him.
The characterisations of all three men are aweworthy, and in particular the intricacies of the Holmes brothers' relations have rarely been captured so well and certainly never so funnily as in this brilliant paragraph:

After a further few hours spent looking over portrayals of Captain Hook, Sherlock comes to the conclusion that it wasn’t that he wanted to be a pirate in his youth, but instead that he’d rather fancied the idea of being carried off by a dashing gentleman who’d turned to a life of crime. None of which helps the situation any. Presumably other boys had wanted to have adventures with Peter Pan, or at least boys other than Mycroft. Sherlock can’t imagine Mycroft having wanted to do anything other than set up a decent economic structure and quite possibly Neverland’s first bank if given the chance.

A very rewarding read, because the author doesn't actually tell us everything and expects us to draw our own conclusions.

Warnings: Non-con, sibling incest, Alpha/Omega-verse
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sherlock is not an odious pedant, or a casual vandal, or a smug, ungrateful twerp. He is meat.
Reccer's comments: If you already love Alpha/Omega-verse, I probably don’t have to persuade you to read a story about Sherlock’s first heat. If A/O is not usually your thing, you may still want to give this a chance. The desperation of Mycroft and Sherlock’s biological drives as alpha and omega, respectively, are used as a basis for exploring their fraught relationship, and the power dynamic is not nearly so straightforward as “alpha is in charge.” They’re both unsure here, and watching them in turn fight and take consolation from each other is heartbreaking.

Author's summary: Fragment of a vampire AU.
Reccer's comments: This fic is a scintillating little peek into that most marvellous of guilty pleasures, the Vampire AU. What makes it stand out is the quality of Sarah T's writing, which is consistently wonderful whatever her subject matter and this is no exception. It has a sort of clean lyricism to it which I really love. Here, the dynamic between Sherlock and Mycroft as seen through the eyes of John is what I find most compelling - the lovely, quiet intimacy of their actions have such a delicious eroticism to them, and the way a slightly reluctant John is at first shocked and then intrigued and finally utterly seduced by the two of them (because really, who wouldn't be?) is wonderfully done.

Author's summary: He is rendered in just a few deft, unwavering marks – the prominent line of his nose in profile, the odd arch of his turned foot, the dark smudge of a nipple. There’s no hesitation, as if Sherlock knows his body as well as he does his own.
Reccer's comments: Basically, peevee can write anything and no matter what it is, I'll be turned into a whimpering, quivering mess. Personally I tend to fall for language over content in short pieces, and peevee delivers on that count - her prose is evocative, lyrical, it washes over you like the sunshine on a summer's day this story describes. This is one of her tamer Sherlock/Mycroft pieces, which might be a good place to get started in her Holmescest work. (I know I immediately went over to some of her other, far filthier Holmescest pieces after this even though I'm not usually a Holmescest enthusiast.) It's a snippet of a moment that had me reeling in its beauty, its simplicity, and its spot on voices. I can feel an intimacy between the brothers here that is tinged with mutual competitiveness and a sort of acceptance, in the peace of the moment, that they can read each other perfectly, because they both see, and they both observe, and no one else does it quite like them.

Author's summary: It happens instantaneously, but it takes years. It’s like looking up at the stars and spinning around with your arms out and letting gravity take you.
Reccer's comments: Mycroft/Sherlock (Holmescest, if you will) is definitely a pairing that is not for everyone. paxlux illustrates how isolating it can be, being a Holmes. Physics starts off when they are children, and follows the brothers all the way to ASiP. I love how they contrast and simultaneously reflect each other, as well as the repetitive theme of stating their ages. There's a world that only the two of them exist in; and this story pulls you inside. I will dare to say that if you only allow yourself one chance to read a Mycroft/Sherlock fanfiction, this one should be it. By the end of the story, it only seems right that they are together. Which, I suppose, is the point.

Excerpt

Sherlock finds the furcula on his pillow again the next time Mycroft leaves. He wants to snap the bone, demand the wish, and calculate their momentum over their timeline, because this is fast pulling at his center of gravity and he can’t see where they’re going.

But it’s brilliant, it’s exciting.

Sherlock is intoxicated with possibilities and tangents and variables, but he returns to a single theorem: how he and Mycroft are equals, halves making a whole, no integrals required.
No one else is like them.
There is only them, together.
And he wants it.

Author's summary: Four times Mycroft and Sherlock almost did it; and one time they did.
Reccer's comments: I’m a sucker for stories that delve into the long and complex relationship of the Holmes brothers. [livejournal.com profile] ettuinarcadia presents five formative moments in the Mycroft/Sherlock relationship that build a lovely tension and highlight the aching impossibility of the situation for both of them. Subtext can be fascinating, and this story does a great job of showing the characters working out (or failing to work out) their problems without their ever having a lengthy discussion about their issues. There's something here for everyone: a little corporal punishment, a little D/s, a little spying, and more than a little romance. Also, there are delicious levels of hotness contained herein.

In the study in the west wing, far from the earshot of Mummy, Mycroft summoned Sherlock. Sherlock was too thin, of course, and had the look, both wild and dreamy, of having lived on little but his drugs these past few weeks. He had a riding crop in his hand. His hair was too long again.

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: It's a difficult relationship.
Reccer's comments: This is one of the quintessential takes on how Sherlock and Mycroft might have grown up together, so very alike and yet so very adversarial. Mycroft’s care for Sherlock is evident in every scene. I especially enjoyed seeing the little incidents that threaten to wedge them apart. Sherlock is pitch-perfectly petulant, and [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20 does a great job of having Mycroft puzzle out how to relate differently to his brother as they both become adults.

When he goes home for the summer, Mycroft finds a new creature in Sherlock's place - sharper, harder, more independent than his little brother. He immediately stops using all of his past experiences as a reference and finds he's going in blind.
