Title: Mrs. Hudson's Guide to Care and Control of Household Pests (When to Call a Professional)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed
Pairing: Mrs Hudson/Sherlock/Irene
Length: about 7,800 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The ageing housing stock of central London is picturesque but delicate, and often harbours destructive pests who wreak havoc on the fragile structures. If such damage is spotted, building owners and managers are advised to contact a skilled professional who is well-versed in the control of vandalous creatures.

Reccer's comments: How about some lovely, genial porn that’s also quite unexpectedly and insanely steamy to round off this August month?

Mrs Hudson knows exactly who to engage to deal with the pest who’s been shooting her wall. Putting it on the rent is one way of teaching him a lesson but there are other, ultimately more pleasurable and effective methods to teach your wayward tenant a lesson.

This fic is both wonderfully funny and wonderfully hot. One minute you’re howling with laughter and the next…

Well, you know.

Just go and enjoy it!

The love story of Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson.

It takes years.

Reccer's comments: Written halfway through season one, this fic is an inadvertent AU in its vision of the course of the relationship between Holmes and Watson, how Irene Adler fits in, and how Moriarty is defeated. There are a few unplanned delights for the reader familiar with all four seasons of the show (as of the time of this rec), from a client's stray comment at the start, "Jamie? Murder somebody?" to the repeated exploration of the ways Joan chooses time and again to stay and Sherlock's shaky efforts to have faith that she will continue to do just that.

Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/Irene, Sherlock/Jim/Molly
Length: approx. 25,000 words

Warnings: top!Sherlock (the reason the fic exists)
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: “It’s frankly alarming,” said the Sherlock in the fishnet top, “watching you simper and fawn and make puppy eyes over John like a … sad, gay baby.”
Sherlock’s mouth fell open. “I am not a sad gay baby!”
“Yes, you are,” said Irene.
“Well, what is he, then?” sputtered Sherlock. “Splaying his legs open so everyone can see his cock through those trousers. Sitting there leering at the rest of us like some sort of superior … Dark fuck prince.”

Currently a WIP. Last updated July 2015. There should be one more chapter according to the author. However, as chapter three to five are pretty much stand alone's you can really go ahead and read!

Reccer's comments: This fic is proof of the human mind’s remarkable talent to turn something vile into something hilarious. Written in response to the vagaries imposed upon last year’s 221B con by a this fic has the show’s characters discuss fanfic, gender politics, sexual roles, ship wars, and fandom, as they search for the perfect incarnation of Toplock.

The author masterfully plays with tropes and head!canons as exploited in the series by Moffat and Gatiss, by fanfic writers (the author included) and readers and shows that the pen, especially when wielded with a humour that manages to cast everyone in a satirical light, truly is the strongest weapon ever invented.

The fic heads off with lots of clever banter flying around the living room. Anthea presides and has a hard time keeping the various characters in their respective incarnations in check. We get to meet DarkFuckPrince!Sherlock, GayBaby!Sherlock, JustTransport!Sherlock, Angry!John (well, he doesn’t get laid, obviously), Saint!John and BAMF!John, Virgin!Sherlock and all these incarnations, traipsing around 221B’s living room together, are totally IC. As are Irene, Mycroft, Anthea, Mrs Hudson, Jim and Molly and even Sebastian Moran. Because no fic featuring Jim is complete without a truly creepy Moran in the background. Fie Moftiss.

Once Anthea has waved her magic wand and decided upon the various pairings we follow those to the rooms allotted them for yet more talk, debate, argument, conference, exchange, review, conversation, consideration, dialogue, consultation, seminar, discourse, deliberation, symposium, colloquy, confabulation not to mention examination, investigation, analysis, scrutiny and dissection that will have you screaming with laughter and chuckling over so much cleverness. Then in each chapter the whole delicious concoction gets topped off with some scorchingly-hot sex, with Sherlock topping of course. Yes, even GayBaby!Virgin!Sherlock gets to do the topping.

What really blew me away in this fic however is the encounter in chapter four, between JustTranpost!Sherlock and a beautifully brave and tender Irene. Even if you don’t read the rest of the fic, read this chapter at least for the wonderful insight into their relationship. You won’t regret it.

Vidder's Summary: “I close my eyes and I try to picture him. And I see someone an awful lot like you.”

Reccer's Comments:

A beautiful example of the vidder's art, masterfully deploying Elementary's visual language to illuminate the first season's central spoiler. (Note: the vid itself is pure spoiler; this rec post is spoiler-free.) The first time I watched it, the layers of allusions and parallels that it revealed took my breath away.

But the vid's brilliance goes far beyond a mere accounting of visual metaphor. Through a host of vidderly techniques, [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 draws the viewer into Sherlock's disorientation, thereby giving real heft to his desperation. I am frankly astonished at how much control the vidder demonstrated in communicating Sherlock's emotional chaos; this vid could easily have devolved into a smush of effects-laden noise, and yet it is always coherent, always interpretable. (You know how art students hang out at museums and sketch the paintings, in order to learn composition? I need to devote a week to recreating this vid, clip-for-clip, in order to understand what-all [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 did here.)

Author's summary: It's the end of an era as Sherlock's life at Baker Street, and his days as a detective draw to a close. Summoned to Paris by Irene Adler, he can't resist one final stroll down the road not taken.

Reccer's comments: A retirement fic with a twist and a lovingly crafted outlook on a relationship between Sherlock and Irene that is actually conceivable. Both are sadder and wiser and yet they’ve remained themselves. Irene is as playful and sly as when we first met her and Sherlock just as weary of her, but also, as much in love with her wit.

The tone is mellow, the language beautiful.

This story is a perfect little gem told by a talented author at the top of her form. A gift to enjoy… and cherish many times.

Author's summary: Missing series of scenes from A Scandal in Belgravia. How does Sherlock actually escape from the Karachi insurgents himself, and what happens when an adrenaline-filled Sherlock finds Irene waiting for him in his hotel room right after his audacious rescue?

Reccer's comments: How does Sherlock actually feel about Irene? We never really find out, do we? Though lots of people far cleverer than I have argued very convincingly in the end he’s not interested in her at all.

This author, however, takes whatever it was between them very seriously and boy, does she add to it to build a most convincing case for some thrilling adlock. Thrilling indeed, for this fic is a glorious ride, as well as a beautifully detailed character study, and an all-consuming romance with some lovely loving porn to top it all off.

Irene is every bit as enigmatic, apparently fickle and unreadable as she is in that wonderful episode and Sherlock, though fighting for his mental equilibrium and trying to give her as good as he gets, is hopelessly lost when she pulls open her full bag of tricks. But perhaps he should just trust her and accept that she’s fallen as hard for him as he has for her?

A beautiful study of two people falling in love, and both too proud to admit it, even to themselves.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] solojones

Length: about 65,300 words

Warnings:author has put up warnings in the summary. Reccer has included those.
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Six months post-Reichenbach, Sherlock approaches Irene with an unusual job offer: he wants to shoot up, and he needs someone to mind him. But can she remain detached whilst Sherlock spirals deeper and deeper into his addiction? This series spans 5 different escalating encounters Sherlock and Irene have over the course of eleven months. This is a dark and frank character and relationship study, and a look at the terrible pull of addiction. M for pervasive drug use, some language, and sexual content.

Reccer's comments: This series is everything the author promises it to be and so much more. It is indeed very dark, and a frankly terrible read at times. However, thanks to both the beautiful and precise language and the thorough examination of the motivations and actions of both Sherlock and Irene the reader becomes committed to the fic, and decides to push on regardless, thus mirroring the main characters’ approach to life and the trials and tribulations they have to confront.

Here be dragons. Sherlock’s addiction pulls Irene irresistibly towards territory she’d rather not explore, but, just like he can’t resist the drugs, she can’t resist him and together they spiral ever deeper downwards to confront his demons, and maybe, ultimately, hers as well. Layer after layer is peeled away, until, in the end, two naked, vulnerable people remain, who have just discovered that in choosing the other, they might actually make it through the rest of their lives.

After having dwelt amidst so much dank and dark despair that tentatively hopeful ending feels almost like a catharsis.

Not the easiest of reads, but definitely worthwhile.

Author's summary: London is possessive; Sherlock's just frustrated. (Alternatively, five times London cockblocked Sherlock Holmes and one time it didn’t.)

Reccer's comments: This is the perfect Sherlock/London fic. It consists of five sharply polished vignettes, each of which tells the story of a near-miss encounter between Sherlock and a different character, and one gorgeous epilogue where he finally gets lucky. It's funny, hot, weird and achingly tense.

Raz stares at his fever-bright eyes before Sherlock’s mouth crashes into his; there’s the taste of smoke and teeth catching at his lips, and when Raz pulls away to breathe Sherlock makes a low, disappointed noise in his throat.

“All right,” Raz says thoughtfully, unlocking the door. “But no fucking.”

“What, then?” Sherlock demands, even as he’s crowding inside.

“Something better,” Raz says.

Reccer's comments: I do realise a fic of [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made was recced only last month in this community. Still, [livejournal.com profile] stardust_made is such a fantastic writer – one of the best, if not The Best of all the writers in this fandom – so she can’t be recced enough, imho.
Both her psychological insight into what drives the characters and the way she manages to render their voices are simply astounding. She excels in every genre she tries her hand at, whether it is a plot-driven story full of horror, a case fic or a character study.
Her language is wonderfully rich. This is one of the best examples. 2,000 words of exquisite prose – or is it poetry? – filled with mesmerising sights, and whispers, and softly seducing brushes over all the pleasure centres in the reader’s brain. An incredibly generous Irene helps Sherlock to refocus on the task that lies ahead of him. Which is to beat Moriarty so he can return to John. For in the end it is all about John.
Gorgeous and superb from the first word to the last. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of reading such a glorious work of art!

Pairing: John/Sherlock, Sherlock/male!Adler, John/male!Adler, past Sherlock/female!Trevor, Moriarty/Moran
Length: 83,084 words

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: All John Watson wants is a peaceful fortnight's holiday in Cornwall. Fate has other plans.

Reccer's comments: Old enemies, new mysteries, old loves, and new revelations, all come together in one spellbinding story that pours on the angst against the gorgeous backdrop of the Italian Alps. The premise is that an old friend of Sherlock's asks him to investigate some mysterious deaths and the disappearance of a valuable codex from a remote monastery. If it sounds a bit like Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, that's because the author did borrow some elements from it, with full acknowledgment. There are also aspects of ASiB and references to TBB, but it all felt absolutely fresh and I was never sure where the next lead was going to take them. The case was intriguing and completely original, with tie-ins to other canon cases and plenty of opportunity for some good old-fashioned UST and angsting on the part of the lads.

I don't as a rule enjoy genderswap, but maybe because it wasn't Sherlock or John, the genderswapped versions of Adler and Trevor scratched an itch I never knew I had. Ian Adler in particular was a fantastic re-imagining of Irene, with all of the character's morally dubious wiles and charms intact. The author makes a point that Tom Hiddleston was the inspiration for Ian's character, as portrayed in this gif. And now you can't unsee that, can you? You're welcome.

And here's Adler in action:

Ian crossed one leg over the other and folded his arms, peering at Sherlock. "How are you feeling?"

"I can still feel traces of the chemical you drugged me with in my bloodstream, and my arm is sore. Thanks for asking."

"I'm amazed that you threw away such a tantalizing opportunity, Sherlock."

"Must sting to be turned down."

"Well, my door is always open." Ian leant back in the chair. "Do consider it, at least. I'd make you beg for more."

"I don't beg. Never have."

"You would, with me," Ian said softly. "Think about it."

I also have to make special mention of Moriarty, because he steals every scene he's in. He is obsessively controlling, head over heels in love with himself, and six steps ahead of everyone else at any given time. Even the Moriarty/Moran was disturbingly compelling. If you already ship them, this will deliver your fix in spades, but he's not such a major character that if they don't butter your toast, you can skim their scenes and not miss much plot. But don't skim, because their dynamic is completely off the rocker.

There are a few scenes that I would call dub-con, so if questionable power dynamics and motivations in sexual situations make you uncomfortable, best proceed carefully. Other than that, the BDSM is pretty mild and brief, and the criminal violence never gets too gory, although guns and knives do what they were made for and a bit of blood does flow.

Pairing: Irene Adler/Kate, Irene Adler/Sherlock Holmes
Length: 605 words
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: What Irene wants, and what she has.
Reccer's comments: In my opinion there is a crippling lack of good Irene fic in the Sherlock BBC fandom, especially stories that also incorporate Kate the maid. This story is so incredibly short you'll spend mere minutes reading it, but the mastery of it lies exactly there: it manages to paint an Irene the reader can feel, can hear in their heads, and can try to understand. Kate makes an appearance that is nearly as brief as her screen time during the show, and yet she comes out of this story as a more developed character whose relationship with Irene has a distinct flavour. I am always in awe of people who manage to give the reader a glimpse of three-dimensional characters in few words, which means I am incredibly an awe of what cobalt does here. This is also an instance of very successful use of the second person singular - I'm generally not much of a fan of stories that seem to be addressing me, but here it is delivered elegantly and deftly. A real gem.

Author's summary: After two days without sleep, he could smell her perfume, see shadows in the corners of the room that moved like her. ...
Reccer's comments: Contains references to suicide attempts, self-harm, and drug use. Set before Holmes meets Watson.

It's hard to find readable Elementary fic. This, I think, is convincing for this version of Holmes, who is more self-destructive, drained, emotional, and bleak than most incarnations.
This is a sketch of Holmes torturing himself through want, supposedly for a woman, a chimerical figure whom he admits, even in the depths of his craving, is a side effect rather than a cause. She's more convincing as metaphor than fact.

It's well written. It's the first I've read where I can picture the character saying and doing what's described. It's a cutting representation of addiction and pain and irrational gut-level need. It's a good bit of backstory for Holmes and another sliver of reinterpretation for The Woman.

Author's summary: Sherlock Holmes finds his way back to the land of the living, if he was ever there to begin with.

Reccer's comments: This is a hiatus/post-Reichenbach/Empty House story that covers the personal side of what Sherlock got up to while he was away, which was basically had a lot of sex with Irene, and what happens when he returns, which is basically have a lot of sex with John, and deal with Moran on the side. It's not straightforward smut, though. Everything Sherlock does is for a reason, and he both finds and reveals depths of himself that no one suspected he had, not even himself.

What I really like about this fic is that the author dares to allow Sherlock to have space in his heart for both Irene and John, and still ends up with a plausible, happy ending which does not involve the three of them shacking up together (the threesome is only one scene). Rather than coming between the two men, Irene is the catalyst that allows John and Sherlock's relationship to move forward. No one is the bad guy (well, except for Moran), and the characterisation of Irene is so cutting and clever and wise that I relished every scene with her.

Reccer's comments: Spoilers for 2.01. Thing is, I came out of ASiB feeling more interested in Irene and John's dynamics than in Irene and Sherlock's. This picks up on a single line in the episode — Irene's casual remark that John has warned her Sherlock sometimes talks to him when he isn't there — and spins it into a thoughtful little study of their relationships, of the ways they all see one another. It's told from Irene's POV, and the perspective it gives us of John is really interesting: there's a focus on his being a man of emotion, while jealous of her mind, but it's the little details, the pauses when he talks, the small movements he makes, the unsaid words, that Irene remarks upon in her careful assessment of him. They keep misunderstanding and misleading one another, and the result is a very delicate, very intelligently written scene.

Pairing: Watson/Mary Morstan, Holmes/unnamed OC, Holmes/Irene Adler
Length: 17,900

Warnings:Author chose not to warn, and I agree with her on this one
Verse: Ritchie

Author's summary: "Intemperance," a story from the secret journals of Doctor John H. Watson, intimate friend and long-time companion of the infamous Sherlock Holmes: A most curious and instructive report of the great man's improbable fecundation, gestation, and parturition.

Reccer's comments: This fic broke my brain, but in the best possible way. I'm not the Ritchie film's biggest fan. I tend to run screaming at Mpreg. The idea of Holmes/Irene Adler usually makes me want to break something. BUT, I will trust Basingstoke to the ends of the Earth, because she's never led me astray before. So, out of a healthy mix of boredom and mild insanity, I gave this one a try. And good lord, it may actually be my favourite piece of hers, and I think Mycroft's line illustrates quite beautifully why this fic simply must be read:

Mycroft Holmes snorted throatily. "Solving petty crimes. What a waste. Still, as a girl he was far worse. An embarrassment. As a man, he is a credit to the family name, even if he is wasting his full potential."

"Intemperance" handles an element of FtM transsexuality that can be positively traumatising for many transmen. An Basingstoke doesn't shy away from it, but rather tackles the issue head-on, with the added drama of Victorian sensibilities and makes it damn near impossible to look away until you've finished the story. You don't even have to be particularly familiar with the Ritchie-verse to enjoy this one, beyond the knowledge that when compared to his other counterparts, RDJ's Holmes is a bit of a shortarse.
