Title: The Theory Of Narrative Causality
Author:
falling_voices
Pairing: Sherlock x John
Length: ??? VERY LONG
Rating: NC-17 / M
Warnings: None applicable
Verse: Sherlock BBC, with cameos from different Sherlock Holmes canons
Author's summary: Sherlock and John are BNFs in Sherlock Holmes fandom. Together, they fight crime. (Always.) And write porn, incidentally.
Reccer's comments: Newcomers may not know of this (amazingly meta) AU fic that was written in the kink meme back before season 2 had aired. The fic spawned a huge fangroup, a roleplay community, and fanworks for the fanfic (we must go deeper). Note: Don't go into it expecting a straight adaptation. The people in this fic are a little different from who we're used to watching on the telly, but they still have the intrinsic values that make them the characters we know and love. John and Sherlock are, as usual, the stars of this fic, but that doesn't mean the other characters aren't delightful as heck. I've personally got a soft spot for Bill.
One of the most intriguing things about this fic is how it's written out as a series of Livejournal (personal, community, and rec) posts and comments, instant messages, and even a freakin' trope page. You're not so much reading the story as you are living it through these glimpses from the internet, if that makes any sense. Also, you get like 5 (steamy) snippets of fanfics (from different canons) in the process of reading one fic, how cool is that?
TL;DR This fic is so meta that it'll make your head spin even as you fall in love with its interpretation of the characters we love faffing around the net like we do.

Check out all the clickable/scrollable bits, it's one of my (many) favorite parts of this fic.
PS Due to the nature/formatting of the fic, it is near impossible for me to give an accurate word count other than "really long but worth it." Also, don't be fooled by the line that signals the end of a post in the fic, because it'll frequently be a lie.

Hello. So, uh, we've been paired together in the shbigbang, and I was wondering — I know you got sent the first draft and all, but is there anything you want to know about the story? I mean, I can give you a general outline or maybe send you everything I've written so far, and then you can draw whichever passage you like. Also, what type of art do you think you'll do? a big one? small ones? Just, well. Just let me know if you want to talk about it. Cheers, John Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

You have too detailed a writing style. A general outline would not help any. If there are specific scenes you want to see illustrated, write them and send them to me. Your first draft was structured in five parts. That would mean one ink drawing for each, as well as a final piece for the epilogue. Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

Seriously? I — wow. That's a lot. But I guess since I'm writing a 50K+ story, you have to keep up? anyway, I'm sending you three separate passages, which I think are among the most important bits, I'd love to see them in your art — that's the meeting at Bart's, and there's the Chinese circus bit, and the discussion in the living-room at 221B in the last part but one. They're unbeta'ed, but I don't think they're too rough for you not to get a clear idea. Cheers, John Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

I do not have to 'keep up' with your work. I merely want this to be the best we can do under the circumstances. Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

I, yes. That's, I guess. That's understandable. John Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

Glad we agree. This is the first draft of the St Bart's meeting, in pencil. I will have to ink it in later, but you may imagine the final result. Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

Wow. That's — well, that looks rather amazing. You know that's actually what people expect from this sort of challenge exchange, right? By the way, I've been talking to ![]() John Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

I am not most people. And fine. The draft of the pool would be most appreciated. Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

I'd noticed. The draft is attached. Speaking of the pool, I'm still a bit blurry on Moriarty and what his appearance should be in this 'verse; d'you think you could sketch me a quick outline of what you think he should look like? it's like, your art makes it clearer to determine my writing. Or something. All my canon fics are based off your art, anyway. Reply | Add as friend | Mark as Spam

Date: 2013-04-01 11:40 pm (UTC)Okay, let me try again. Perfection. There. It's the only word that comes to mind when I try to describe this fic. Pure perfection. The author deserves a medal and a title for this.
Thank you so much for reccing it!
