Hi, members, readers, reccers, passers-by --

We're still looking for reccers to sign up for June. If you're interested, please drop a comment in the sign-up thread. Please note that you'll need to be a member of the com for us to give you posting access. We welcome recs for completed fan works (fic, art, vids, podcasts) based on all versions of Sherlock Holmes, including crossovers. New works or old, they're all of interest. We try to have five reccers per month to given enough people a chance to participate, and to offer a healthy number of recs every month as well as a variety of reading and viewing tastes.

Please let us know, in a comment here or a PM, if you have any questions or requests.

Title: Beta
Author: pengke
Pairing: Gen
Length: 1046
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Sherlock has discovered fan fiction. John will never look at the internet the same.

Reccer's comments: With all the angst out there (Reichenbach and others), and even though I'm more of a sucker for such fics than most, I thought I would throw a little fluff and humor into the mix.  Because I also love a story that can make me laugh out loud and giggle like a school girl.
This is one of those.

Sherlock finds RPF porn that has been written about him and John.  Sherlock is appalled because of incorrect grammar and purple prose.  John is horrified for completely different reasons.  Short but sweet.

Title: Without Borders
Author: scuttlesworth
Pairing: John Watson/Mary Morstan
Length: 4,310 words approx.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Character death, Reccer would add death of someone who is pregnant (not graphic)
Verse: Sherlock BBC

Author's summary: Medicine Sans Frontiers always needs doctors willing to travel to difficult places. Without Sherlock, John needs a place to get away from London to and someone to need him. So he goes to the Sudan, and he minute he gets there he gets his ass chewed out by Nurse Morstan.
Author's Notes: This idea, of John joining Medicine Sans Frontiers because he can't bear London anymore - of John seeing Nurse Morstan for the first time and she's this vibrant and amazing woman, and she completely chews him out in front of everyone and they're all nervous because she's only a nurse and he's the Doctor from England - and he falls for her, completely - this has been in my head for ages.
I hope you like it. :) This might be the last time we can do a fix like this, where Mary Morstan isn't canon yet.

Reccer's comments: First of all I'm making sure I rec this now before this magnificent possibility for Mary Morstan finds herself well and truly jossed!

Second: don't judge! Just stay right there! I've read a few John Watson/Mary Morstan fics where Mary felt like a wet blanket. That is far from the case here. I can truly believe that John would love this Mary, and want to spend the rest of his life with her.

This is a story where John has gone to find himself that purpose he needs so badly. What the author gives the reader is an incredibly vivid world (you can practically feel the heat when you're reading it) complete with a brilliantly vibrant and alive Mary Morstan who John is attracted to from the off. As she yells rude things at him!
John builds himself a new purpose, a new place, a new life in the sands of the Sudan with Mary working alongside him. I can't say anymore without spoilers but this is a story that totally swept me away and on re-reads, even though I know where it's going, it never fails to move me.

I always think a mark of really great fanfic writing is that, when it comes down to it, that apart from a bit of assumed background, it could be detached from its fandom and still be an incredible story. This is one of those.

Nest Among the Stars by KeelieThompson1

Series: Part 5 of Ava Watson verse
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 109,956 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None given
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Sequel to Rocks of Salvation. With John recovering, Ava surviving numerous takaways and Mycroft taking care of Moriarty, everything in Sherlock's life seems to be falling into place. But how long will it take before Moriarty gets bored? Johnlock. Read chapter warnings as dark themes are ahead.

Reccer's comments: I LOVE this series and the latest installment in it, Nest Among the Stars. In my opinion, this story (and series) is a masterpiece of storytelling. (I know the series has already been recc’d here, but not this story as it was still a WIP. And yes, Keelie has promised more in this series!) If you don’t know the Ava Watson verse, you can look up its rec on the 221B spreadsheet in the sidebar, but in a nutshell it’s a kidfic told through different POVS with each story revealing another piece of the plot. The pleasure for the reader is discovering the answer to a missing piece of the story.

Nest has everything beginning with angst, angst, and more angst. (I know. What can I say? But it is SO worth it!) There were times I was stunned from the surprise and action. The scenes with Lestrade, Mycroft, and Moriarity had me either comforted or terrified. And John and Sherlock? *hugs them* This story made my heart beat with adoration for BAMF!John and Sherlock’s brilliance, aloofness, and gut-wrenching vulnerability. Holding it all together is John and Sherlock’s love for each other and their fierce love and protectiveness for their daughter, Ava. If you like plot, puzzles, suspense, and thrilling action, this story (and series) is not to be missed! Bring a hankie, you're going to need it.

P.S. Thanks again for the opportunity to share my recommendations. It was a pleasure.
