Author's summary: A John and Sherlock character study, in which Sherlock combats boredom by, among other things, trying to goad John into attacking him. John is sadly resistant.
Reccer's comments: A brilliant friendship and character study story told with great humour.
It starts with there having been no cases for a month and John and Sherlock are both bored; in Sherlock's case nearly terminally. Sherlock has resorted to trying to provoke John into attacking him through sheer lack of other options while examining the contradiction that is quiet, unassuming, danger/thrill seeking and shooter-of-cabbies John Watson.
It turns out though that Sherlock has a surprise up his sleeve...
The best kind of character study; one with plot where it seems effortless. The OCs are fascinating, well drawn and engaging. Yes, one of them is Mary Morstan but this is Captain Mary Morstan of the Royal Artillery. These are John's military colleagues and Sherlock's watches what he sees as, "John Watson’s natural habitat" with fascination.
Hilarious and also meaningful. Another story I return to again and again.
Excerpt: "“Someday,” John says dreamily, still typing and deleting over and over in a slightly unbalanced manner, “I’m going to kill you. You really will drive me to homicide. Lestrade will be completely unsurprised and Sergeant Donovan won’t blame me. You know that, don’t you?”
Sherlock drums his fingertips together impatiently. The relevant point is that John is absolutely not going to try to kill him today. He is far, far too calm; Sherlock is utterly failing to inspire murderous rage. How frustrating."
