Author's summary: Coming back from the dead can be a complicated business. With a new case on the horizon, rebuilding a life is one thing... rebuilding a friendship quite another. For Sherlock and John, things may never be just the same...
Reccer's comments: Seems almost superfluous to recommend a Verity Burns fic, since any fan of S/J epics who’s read anything that she’s written knows to immediately drop everything when she has a new story. However, I’m posting this just in case you’re new to the fandom, or somehow missed that she completed a new story last month.
And what a story it is! First, it’s a wonderful post-Reichenbach fic. Her characterization of John’s emotional state is spot-on, and in one of the latter chapters she tackles an issue that few fics do – the fact that John not only thinks Sherlock is dead, but also that he killed himself. I hope that the BBC version of the Empty House deals with the repercussions of that fact as effectively.
But if you’re not in the mood for post-Reichenbach angst, don’t worry, because it’s only a small part of the story. There are also not one but two very clever case-fics here, including an ingenious adaptation of a canon story. I really enjoyed following the clues and making my own guesses.
However, the real draw is Sherlock/John scenes, including a kiss that melted my computer screen. I have no idea how the author makes a kiss seem more pornographic than a full-on sex scene, but she does. John is very toppy in this story, which is incredibly hot. And the author’s word-picture of Sherlock’s mental processing of the new data is very evocative of the source material.
In short, this story has something for everyone. Fair warning, though. Make sure you have the time to spare, because once you start reading, it’s very hard to stop.
