Reccer's comments:
katieforsythe should be another familiar name to some or most of you, but I think The Violet Elephant is probably one of her lesser-known pieces. It's also one of my favorites for the way she deals with Lestrade in it. It's really wonderful to get to watch him put together the pieces of a mystery he didn't even know existed, and his horror at discovering he knows something Sherlock Holmes doesn't know he knows is both comical and kind of heartbreaking at the same time. Plus, their sort of "no one else is around, we may as well" friendship is kind of adorable. Finally, Watson never actually appears in this story, but his presence is felt very keenly, which is great if you're a fan of Watson (as I am) :D
