Date: 2018-11-02 10:14 pm (UTC)I think that specific kind of analysis and discussion that you're talking about is fun and valuable and currently lacking in fandom, as you've said, but I believe it works better in a reading group rather than on a recommendation comm. Though I'm sure if anyone wanted to start a new reading group like that, there would be people interested in joining in!
This comm, being focused on recs and positive feedback only, has historically discouraged critical discussion or even polite disagreement with other people's recs (when that kind of discussion has started up in comments, the mods have usually shut it down). I wasn't intending to challenge that ethos. I understand why this comm has prioritized making recc'ers feel safe in celebrating any work, even those whose appeal is geared toward niche tastes or containing elements that some find unpleasant. I think that approach has worked well for this comm.
Though I know that doesn't really help with the lacuna that you're pointing to...the mods at reading221b might be open to passing the reins of the comm to others who are still active in the fandom -- I don't know if anyone has asked them? But if the interest is there, or if you know anyone who might want to try modding a new round, it can't hurt to inquire!
