I read this as part of
holmestice’s Winter 2017 Round while knowing absolutely nothing of the canon. I’m guessing most people reading this rec will be in the same position but you can read an explanatory comment by one of the Holmestice mods
sanguinity here, which gives a very clear and informative overview.
I have to say though it’s really not necessary. All the information you need to enjoy this fic is contained within it. It’s a beautifully written backstory for Joanna Watson (the Watson in ‘Holmes and Watson’ for this ‘verse) as she moves from childhood to mature late middle-age, bravely choosing to live an unconventional life with all its positive and negative aspects, managing to come through personal tragedy, and finally extending kindness and friendship to another unconventional young woman, Miss Charlotte Holmes…
The story is so moving and I found Mrs. Watson to be such a fascinating and appealing character.
