Title: Nostoi
Author: sanguinity
Length: 20,973 words
Rating: T and up
Author's summary: Holmes wants to see the last European pterodactyl safely home. Watson wants to see Holmes happy again.
Universe: New Russian Holmes (2013) / The Lost World (Doyle)
Reccer's comments: Yes, you saw that right: Sherlock Holmes crossed over with The Lost World. And it works! Not that I can imagine this crossover working with any other "straight" interpretation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, because one of the New Russian Holmes' strengths (to me, anyway) is the highly idiosyncratic approach it takes to the canon.
Anyway, in this fic, Holmes and Watson attend a lecture by a prominent scientist, who brings to London a pterodactyl from his recent adventures in South America. The creature escapes and fascinated by it, Holmes (dragging a protesting Watson in his wake) hares off after it. Before long, Holmes has become obsessed with saving this creature and returning it to its native land before other people kill it.
Sanguinity does a superb job of showing us Watson trying to rebuild his relationship with a post-hiatus Holmes, Holmes' obvious identification with a unique and destructive creature, and how this adventure allows Holmes and Watson to begin repairing the strains in their friendship after the hiatus and Holmes' emotional and intellectual "crash" after the death of Moriarty, all embedded in an adventure tale.
If you haven't seen the Russian Holmes, this story will make you go "what?" a few times, but once you get into the chase the adventures and the friendship between Holmes and Watson are entirely canonical (and really wonderful). Definitely a story that rewards adventuring outside the BBC Sherlock bubble. And if this tale makes you curious about the Russian Holmes series, it's all available on youtube.
