Reccer's comments: Euclase is one of my favorite fanartists, remarkable for the photographic realism of their drawings. They specialize in portraits of characters from genre films and television. They have portraits from the BBC verse in their deviantArt archive, but Joan is the only Holmesian image in their tumblr collection. And what a spectacular contribution! The complex, soft textures and wrinkles of Joan's clothes, the pose - both casual and slightly weary - are simply marvelous. The artist seems to have caught her mid-thought.

I am especially glad to recommend euclase's work here this month, because they have recently been dealing with some anon hate on their tumblr and I would really love to send new people their way to offer appreciation for their beautiful work. I hope you enjoy it!

Not my fandom at all, but still it's a pleasure to look at such skilled work.

I hardly dare ask, but what sort of anon hate? (And what -- the great unanswerable question -- is wrong with people?)

Yes, I haven't watched Elementary either, but I do run into some great art from that side of fandom :)

Oh, it's the usual "fanart isn't real art, you aren't creative, you're just a copier" spiel. Maybe euclase gets this all the time, but I just started following them and there was a batch of those nasty messages around the New Year that made me angry on euclase's behalf. Someone actually wrote in to say "your art is useless" and that euclase should stop giving advice to other aspiring artists because they didn't know anything about "creativity." And some other anon was acting outraged at the fact that euclase bases their drawings on screencaps, because in this anon's head art wasn't "legitimate" unless it was drawn...from a live model? from pure imagination? who knows, but for some reason they were arguing that using photographs as references made the art a fraud.

What, indeed, is wrong with people?! Thank goodness euclase is not letting this get in the way of their continuing work.

The older I get, the less comprehensible I find this sort of thing, in all its variations (fanfiction isn't real writing, adults who read YA novels are insufficiently mature, art made on a computer isn't real art -- I'm sure you know the drill as well as I). All fingerwagging, all in the service of making someone feel superior.

To euclase's "critics" I would have to say, "Okay! Let's see you do it!"
