Reccer's comments: This is one of the earliest fics I read in fandom, and it's one I come back to - its a elegantly structured love story, using a similar conceit to the Time Traveller's Wife: John appears at Sherlock's side throughout his life whenever Sherlock is in severe distress but neither of them know why. The writer beautifully evokes the strength of feeling between John and Sherlock, John's distress at being unable to help young!Sherlock tackle bullies and family tragedy and Sherlock's frustration at never being able to hold on to John. The conclusion and resulting explanation for John's time travel is very neatly done in my opinion.

There are some dark themes touched on in this fic, so please read the warnings but it's overall a heartwarming and very touching read.

Thanks very much for this rec, I had read this a long time ago but had not remembered it well, so it was a pleasure to rediscover. And as you say, for all the dark things it touches on, it's surprisingly optimistic and sweet :)
