Fic Rec: Acceptable Risk
Apr. 17th, 2015 04:31 pmTitle: Acceptable Risk
Author: astolat
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 3,400 words
Rating: E
Warnings: non-consensual drugging, possible dub-con (see note below)
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The door wasn't locked. He stopped just inside and drank in the flood of data, like the first rush of a cigarette after weeks without, or the even sweeter rush of heroin. (Post-Reichenbach)
Reccer's comments: This fic is just so, so sharp. Funny, insightful, a bit painful but ultimately victorious. I personally love the discussion John and Sherlock have critiquing the strategy of Sherlock's Reichenbach deception and talking about what kind of risks are or should be acceptable for the two of them. The author brings Sherlock to life as a full-on manipulative bastard with his heart somehow approaching his sleeve, while John is furious and trying very hard to be done with this insanity and yet, at every point, understanding Sherlock down to the ground. John sees right through him, and ultimately that is what gives them a second chance.
In my opinion, it's wonderfully well-written and it strikes a tone both madcap and sincere; I will never fully understand how the author managed it :)
This fic was written pre-S3, so it's a different version of Reichenbach and its aftermath.
** POSSIBLE WARNINGS: 1) While in my opinion the story ultimately portrays informed consent, there are issues surrounding it which could easily be read as unresolved dub-con, so please approach with caution if that is a sensitive issue for you, 2) I know there are some readers who are really put off by John being intransigent over Reichenbach and/or punching Sherlock over it, so I just wanted to flag that these elements are part of this story
If you decide to give it a try, I hope you enjoy it!
