Author's summary: You can never quite shake off who you were before you were you.
Reccer's comments: I'm a bit of a sucker for character-centric stories, particularly ones that give new insight or paint certain characters in unusual ways. And that goes double if the character has morally troubling aspects and the story makes them approachable, even pitiable, without explaining away those things. This fic knocks it out of the park in both areas. As I said when I first recommended this piece on my personal Tumblr, "It doesn’t flinch from portraying his particular brand of psychopathy and villainy, but does it in a way that was, well, approachable if not attractive."
This author's Moriarty isn't from the nice part of town, and I think getting that just right in a way that doesn't present the reader with a tale worthy of Charles Dickens is so necessary to a story about this man's childhood. Moriarty is the product of neglect and society's failings, but he is not preoccupied with it - he sort of rises above it (though not entirely) in a way that felt both fresh and original to me and, at the same time, so natural it was inconceivable I hadn't been thinking of his childhood along precisely these lines.
