Hey good old LJ people!
I've finally fallen into the black hole that is tumblr. Because I really had too much time on my hands... not. *head desk*
I used to not get how it worked, but now I might be about 80 % there. Got xkit installed and everything.
So! Starting with the recs from 2014 we'll post links to the recs here on our new Tumblr account. I'm still a tumblr noob though, so if I'm doing it wrong feel free to point things out to me!!
(E.g. if there's a way to not distort the icon in the banner of the link. Or leave it out completely.) I seem to have omitted that problem by changing the theme. But maybe only on the blog itself, not on other people's dashboards.
221B Recs on Tumblr
I'm planning on just tagging things with the comm name, pairings (or characters) and verses, since people can still search for stuff more in-depth here. Does that make sense? Tags over there are still a bit of a mystery tbh.

Date: 2014-01-10 08:21 pm (UTC)I'm starting to think that I'm doing something wrong because everyone seems to love it.
You said you didn't get it, how that changed? Any pointers maybe?
(sorry if this is off here, but the whole fandom seems to move and I'd like to be able to follow...)

Date: 2014-01-10 08:44 pm (UTC)It seems to me like people have gotten better about quoting sources. Or maybe I just didn't notice it when I was on there half a year ago.
I was so confused about whether stuff people posted was their own or by the person they reblogged it from or by someone else entirely. There have been quite a few (justified!) rants by artists on there, so maybe that's why.
I just searched for stuff I liked and then followed a bunch of random people. :) I started spending time on my dashboard and slowly I kind of started to see how reblogging and quoting stuff worked. I didn't really do anything specific except for hanging around and observing.
And liking things ^^.
Anon questions are also very convenient. You can ask tumblr savvy people lots of stuipd questions on how they do stuff. ahem.
Also: Definitely install xkit! Just google it. It lets you filter stuff on your dash - e.g. the word "spoiler". And a bunch of other usefull things tumblr doesn't offer on its own.

Date: 2014-01-12 08:36 am (UTC)It's not just the lack of communication possibilities tat bother me.
I don't follow that many accounts but I still find it impossible not to miss things I'm interested in like art, fics etc.

Date: 2014-01-10 10:20 pm (UTC)I didn't realize you had to sign in to see the posts at all. That might be in the settings... Will try to figure it out tomorrow.
But the tumblr account is more for the benefit of the people who spend time on there anyway and don't want to have to check LJ, too.

Date: 2014-01-10 10:14 pm (UTC)I was active in fandom in the 90's and then left for about 8 years. Since returning I've missed the days of email lists where real discussions about shows and characters took place with a large group of fans. I've been looking for a forum to discuss Sherlock, but haven't really found anything comparable. If anyone can steer me to one, I'd appreciate it.

Date: 2014-01-10 10:32 pm (UTC)I hear you about the communication. Though I was never exactly a very active member of fandom I love following discussions. tumblr is not made for that imo... I still find it hard to make sense of posts where several people reblogged each other.

Date: 2014-01-14 10:26 am (UTC)Although XKit is great, as a spoilerphobe (which I am) your worst enemies are the many people who don't tag, or tag poorly, or don't have the same sense of what a spoiler is. I've had to sadly "mute" people who do that.
Even more sadly, the poor communication methods of Tumblr and the general tone of the BBC fandom there makes it quite frustrating. In 2013 I found that as the year progressed and even with XKit working, you could tell the cycle of endless conflict was intensifying and getting uglier. I still post a few things to my queue by searching non-SH tags and post recs of SH works I like, but I've dropped off the dashboard. It had become 90% pain to 10% pleasure. A shame because there are some very lovely people on it.
I've also heard several fans say they plan to either temporarily take a break, or leave altogether the Tumblr side of the fandom as it promotes more angry, simplistic accusations and insinuations than thoughtful content. But: those that do write the latter do some terrific work. And there's some gorgeous art! :)
Despite Tumblr's many problems, I will definitely be reblogging some of your site's posts from my blog!
