Title: Signs for the Distant and Disconsolate Heart and Winter Afternoon
Author: Fengirl88
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Length: Signs: 1,829; Winter: 1,759
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Author chose not to use archive warnings, though I saw nothing to warn about, other than mentions of all-too-realistic homophobia.
Verse: BBC Sherlock
Author's summary: He supposes he is Sherlock's best friend. If you can be the best in a class of one.
Or he'd thought he was, until the row.
Reccer's comments: "Signs for the Distant and Disconsolate Heart" is such a delicate story, an internal dialog, really, as John tries so hard to understand what happened between him and his best friend Sherlock. The story begins in media res and we quickly discover that John has fled to Aldeburgh, England, and is on the beach, in February. He is as cold inside as out as he struggles to comes to terms with his feelings about Sherlock, and what his feelings will mean to both of them. There are subtle parallels between his situation and the hostility of the town to the sculpture John studies, to the words cut into the sculpture, and to the people the sculpture honors. I like this John very much. He's thoughtful and honest with himself, and strong before societal expectations. I also love his solution.
A year later, Fengirl88 posted Winter Afternoon, the same story but told from Sherlock's POV and which takes place the day after "Signs." My heart aches for this Sherlock, who is -- as we saw in the show -- not very good at understanding the subtle nuances of the human heart, but who is trying, very hard, to get better at it. Privy to his innermost thoughts, we discover that he is simultaneously frightened and courageous, but without John, he never quite makes the leap he needs to.
Two poignant stories of two men over two stressful days.
