I love a good bit of magical realism, and this author--while new to me--hooked me from the first word of this story. It's a neat twist on shapeshifting, with backstory and current events woven together in a way that was not only easy to follow but fascinating, each new scene informing the next. As the cherry on top, John's the one to surprise the heck out of Sherlock post-Reichenbach. (And for a cherry on the cherry, the last few lines are a delight.)
