Author:
cherrytide (CherryBlossomTide on AO3)
Pairing: None
Length: 2,800 words
Rating: G

Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: An 18 year old Sherlock is about to start a new life. Mycroft, as always, is worried.
Reccer's comments: This is a really lovely, multi-layered glimpse at pre-series Sherlock and Mycroft. Sherlock is an insecure teenager about to start studying at Cambridge, and Mycroft, already quite renowned as a government official in the city, behaves in the over-protective and parental way we'd expect him to. I really like the idea of Mycroft trying to help Sherlock settle into his new surroundings and of Sherlock resenting him for it, while still being ultimately grateful that Mycroft's there for him and understands him when no one else does. Like all stories dealing with the Holmes brothers' complex relationship, the interactions and the dialogue between the brothers depicted here are very fascinating, fraught with meaning, references to a difficult past and a sense of "the two of us against the rest of the world".
Watching Sherlock move into his new room and meet Sebastian Wilkes for the first time is as intriguing as it is painful: He's trying to prove to his brother that he can manage on his own, but being the person he is, he struggles terribly with interacting with other people to the point that he simply can't cope. I think this is a really convincing and sympathetic portrayal of what young Sherlock would have been like. It makes you understand why Mycroft worries so much and really makes you want to give the poor boy a tight hug. Although obviously the Sherlock shown here would simply shy away from it...
It's all quite sad, admittedly, but there's a certain blue scarf involved, and that brightens things up a little, beautifully so.
