Title: Puh for Picasso
Author: nauticus
Pairing: Gen
Length: 5045
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: Their parents oftentimes think that Sherlock can't understand them, but Mycroft knows differently. Sometimes words aren't necessary.

Reccer's comments: This may very well be one of the most heart-wrenching and bittersweet fics I've read in Sherlock fandom, only to be topped by it's WIP sequel. Mycroft as the center of Sherlock's world when they were boys is my head-canon like burning and nauticus's interpretation of that relationship is beautiful and painful at the same time. The author does a fantastic job with Mycroft's voice--he sounds every inch a brilliant child, and the seeds of his duty to and concern for Sherlock are planted deep, as well as the hint of desire for the control he'll one day be able to command. As someone with a physically disabled close relative, I've seen how ugly a thing ableism is, and nauticus wields the blade of it deftly and with compassion and I could just go on about this for days. I highly suggest reading the unfinished sequel, 2+2=5, but be warned, it takes the pieces of your heart that this fic tapes back together and stomps all over them again.

Title:The One Fixed Point
Author: [livejournal.com profile] autumnatmidnite
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 9067
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Verse: ACD Canon. Very much so.
Author's summary: Post retirement fic. Watson is summoned to Sussex to join Holmes in one last investigation, but as things progress, the dear doctor begins to suspect something is amiss with his companion ...

Reccer's comments: This is one of my personal “golden oldies” (not that old, really, but it was pre-Sherlock and that makes it seem like ages) to which I love to return from time to time. Especially when I’m once again working myself into frustration over the ending ACD presented us with in canon. But the good thing about it is that he gave us ample room to play, and this fic proves that the very facts that can be so angsty and frustrating may be transformed into a (still somewhat angsty, but very hopeful) story that not only satisfies the reader, but very likely also two lonely fictional characters who should not be separated by their heartless brilliant creator.
In short, it’s a heart-warming fix-it in which not all is sugar and candies, but it really doesn’t have to be.

Title: Most Ghosts Are Idiots
Author: GoldenUsagi
Pairing: Gen
Length: 18234
Rating: Teen
Warnings: past character death (obvs)
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary: The one where Sherlock is already dead but hits it off with John anyway. John returns from Afghanistan later than he did in canon and rents a long vacant flat in Baker Street. But it has a few problems, he discovers, such as the ghost of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock throws books about, plays the violin at all hours, and leaves ominous messages on the bathroom mirror. John settles in regardless, determined not to let a haunted flat get the best of him. Though he does wish Sherlock would stop hiding his cane. Sherlock’s not an ordinary ghost, but then, most ghosts are idiots.

Reccer's comments: Oh man, I can't believe this hasn't been recced on here yet! What I think I love most about this fic, is that GoldenUsagi manages to pull off an alternate meeting (and a supernatural one!) that feels every bit as authentic to the characters and material of A Study in Pink, without it being a carbon copy of the episode. Sherlock communicating in morse code and John replying to poltergeist activity with an eyeroll and opening of his newspaper--classic. Mycroft is perfectly on point as well, and trust the Holmes brothers to take sibling rivalry beyond the grave. And finally, the end will leaving you clutching your chest with the understated perfection of it all.
