Carol of the Bees

Reccer's comments: Being an approaching oldie myself, I have a particular soft spot for retirement era fics, and Carol of the Bees is so eloquent in its depiction of abiding passion, long-kept secrets, hurt and forgiveness and a Holmes who really *isn't* a hidden romantic, but is nonetheless capable of deep committment, that I re-read it often. The Case of the Missing Flatmate fills in the essential background and is a nice first-time tale all by itself too. Sadly this talented writer (more of whose work I will be reccing this month) does not seem to be writing for Holmes fandom any more... unless you know otherwise ;-)?

Title: When the War Fires Fade
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snowdarkred
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~ 7 K
Rating: PG13
Warnings: violence
Verse: Sherlock BBC (fusion with the book "Sunshine")
Author's summary:The Wars turned the world on its head, and in that unrivaled chaos, John Watson was born with a rare gift. Sherlock, naturally, was born with an even rarer one. Years after the Wars end and the Others return to their dark lairs, two men are introduced by a well-meaning mutual acquaintance. And their world is upturned yet again.
Reccer's comments:
The author lists "magic" and "vampires that don't sparkle and are actually supposed to be somewhat scary" in her warnings. So if that has you running away screaming there's probably nothing I can do, but if you like fantasy AUs (or are willing to give them a try) this fic is definitely an example of how it should be done.
While the world isn't the same as the one on screen John and Sherlock still are - enhanced abilities or not. The world building is fantastic, I dare you not to get sucked into it. The fic is actually a fusion with the book "Sunshine", but I haven't read it and I didn't feel like I was missing things. Not knowing the book might actually have been a good thing suspense wise, since I did not see Sherlock's abilities coming.
John is a total bamf on top of everything else, which is always a big plus in my book :).
