Title: walk through ghosts
Author:
augustbird
Pairing: Sherlock/John, John/Mary
Length: 6.1k
Rating: mature
Warnings: none
Verse: Sherlock BBC
Author's summary:The thing is: Sherlock thought that the two of them would have forever to figure it out.
Reccer's comments: I love angst. Sometimes I want to read something that reaches inside my gut and twists, something where situations are complex and ambiguous. Man, does this fic deliver. I consider it the saddest Sherlock fic I've ever read and it is my go-to fic when I want to read something that hurts. It's not the saddest because rocks fall and everyone dies but because it's a very human tragedy.
John has moved in with Mary and Sherlock considers what might-have-been between himself and John. Sherlock is deeply affected, shown in small ways that have all the more impact for how subtle they are. Stunning prose, emotional without being overwrought.
As the fic progresses things only get more complicated and difficult for everybody. I will refrain from giving specifics, but it's worth mentioning Molly really shines in the fic as she sees what's happening.
There is no villain, no easy solution. Mary is not a cardboard cutout--even though she's in the background she comes through as a fully realized character. As much as I want Sherlock and John to be together, I believe that John and Mary work and to break them up is wrong. Somebody will be hurt no matter how things play out. I think the ending handles it well.
An instant favorite and one I enjoy re-reading.
