I think it's a good idea. It seems to have worked well so far. The open recs post gives people a chance to rec WIPs which otherwise might not get recced (or at least not for a very long time, until they're finished).

And the open recs weekend has been used nicely, without flooding the community with posts but still giving people who would like to rec one or two things in a month the ability to post without committing to make as many recs as an official monthly reccer, or if the monthly reccer positions were all filled then other people can still use the open weekends to rec their favorites.

Definitely like the the chance to make open recs of WIP in the comments!

For example I have a public service announcement to all fans of bendingsignpost, the author of the wonderful Stranger At the Gate vampire AU and the Watches ‘Verse. In addition to the carefully crafted fics on his master list, ben sometimes writes mini-fics as prompt responses, and they can be found in the comments section of the post on the reasoning that prompts are fun http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/15315.html

(note the link to page two of the comments at the top of the comments, which can be hard to spot).

The latest post is an AU of his two major AU’s, where the Watches!John “over-writes” Stranger!John. It’s a WIP that may or may not be completed, but even if ben doesn’t add to it, what he’s written so far is enough to melt my brain. If you’re a fan of both Watches and Stranger, it’s a must-read. I hope I'm posting this in the right place...anyway, here are a couple WIPs and ficlets I'm loving right now:

Nine-Tenths of the Law (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/27821.html)(R) by bendingsignpost. John knows what's his - of course he'll kill for it. (Modern vampire AU). Unbelievable world-building, and it's great to see John as the vampire for once. 2 out of 3 chapters posted currently, but it's sure to be updated again soon.

Peeps (http://earlgreytea68.livejournal.com/366412.html)(G) by earlgreytea68. “Peeps?” Sherlock said. “What are Peeps?” “You know,” John said, gesturing vaguely in the air in a way that made Sherlock assume Peeps were hot air balloons made of octopus skin, because there was no other possible interpretation for that gesture. “They’re marshmallow chicks.” The most adorable ficlet. Also, PEEPS.

History Lessons (http://trista-zevkia.livejournal.com/59142.html)(PG-13) by trista_zevkia. The historic first meeting of Arch-enemies Not-so-anonymous? BAMF! Mycroft and Anthea go up against Lex Luther and his minion. Guess who wins?

The Reichenbach Tapes (http://ghislainem70.livejournal.com/46004.html#cutid1)(NC-17) by ghislainem70. Post-Reichenbach, John finds he's still got one thing left to live for. There need to be more amazing post-RTF stories like this. Chapter 11 was just posted and I'm already hungering for more.

Misdialed (http://dlanadhz.livejournal.com/34277.html)(PG-13) by dlanadhz. AU John needs a new phone, one that doesn’t bend time and have an amazing man on the other end who claims to be the world’s greatest detective, except that he can’t figure out how he called Dr. Watson instead of his brother. However, with a criminal mastermind on the loose, John's phone connection may be the only thing that can save him. A really clever AU, with 12 chapters posted so far.
