Title: Untitled Jeremy Brett portrait series
Artist: NLMDA
Pairing: Gen
Rating: unrated, I would say they are all G and SFW
Warnings: none
Verse: Granada
Author's summary: (There is no summary for the whole series, but I think this individual portrait summary encapsulates the feel of the art): "Why would anybody use green, blue and some weird-ass-pink to paint a portrait, they said. Why the hell not, I said. Because insane colours are cool. Another attempt to capture the awesomeness of Jeremy Brett’s face."
Reccer's comments: Hello, everyone! Sorry for the lapse in recs this last week, but my family vacation became more colorful when we discovered our toddler's violent allergy to cats whilst staying with my mother (2 cats) and step-father (3 cats). So there was less internetting, and also less sleeping, than I had hoped. But all is now well, and I'm leaping back into the fray with these astonishing portraits.
It has come to my attention that this month marked the twentieth anniversary of Jeremy Brett's death, and I cannot think of a better tribute to him than these vibrant, glorious, messy, energetic, beautiful and unique paintings. The color choices in particular are defiantly unconventional, and the artist combines an enviable realism of feature with some daring obfuscations and exuberant slap-dasheries. I would like to point your attention in particular to my three favorite portraits, each of which showcases different elements of the artist's style.
This red and blue one is one of the earlier paintings, which keeps relatively clear lines and uses eye-popping color to create a debonair, gorgeous portrait of Jeremy's Holmes which seems to me to capture his elegance and wry inquisitiveness. In this one (labelled in my bookmarks "a flurry of color & intellect"), the artist pushes further into a sort of expressive and messy style that is more playful and seems to exude the same energy and charisma that was so much a hallmark of Brett's acting and personality. Plus, gotta love the deerstalker. And in this most recent one, the artist catches a more melancholy side of Brett's Holmes, with muted colors and gentle blurs of rising smoke.
If you are as delighted by these paintings as I am, you might enjoy exploring nlmda's whole Sherlock Holmes tag, which includes quite a bit more of Brett's Holmes, but also a great deal of BBC Sherlock art with both major and secondary characters lovingly rendered.
